She was shaking. The torture that shone in her eyes tore my heart into shreds. Why was I feeling like this?
Evelyn had changed. She wasn’t the scared shaking girl I had met two years ago, even now. Even as sweat built up on her forehead, I could see it.
She was strong.
“Evelyn…” I trailed off, moving closer to her. Her breathing was erratic and shallow. Her feet were set apart, and her body was tense. But her eyes….
Red, blue, green.
They changed color over and over again.
Her lips moved as she mumbled things I could barely make out. “No, no, no. Leave…. no….” Her hands moved through her hair. “No… please… I didn’t….”
“It’s okay.” I was a few inches away from her now, “Calm down, Eve.”
She gripped her hair in her fists and pulled hard. “Please…”
“Eve!” I yelled, and gripped her face. I forced her to look at me. “Look at me Evelyn.”
Her body shook under mine, trembling with fear. Her eyes connected with mine, and for a split second, I saw the vulnerability.
The hurt.
Then they rolled to the back of her head and she went limp.
I scooped her up in my arms before her body could hit the ground. She was too light.
Up the stairs I went, and figured that the room that was slightly ajar was her room. Thankfully I was right, and I softly placed her on the king-sized bed. Her eyes were tightened. Her face, scrunched up like she was in pain.
I drag a chair nearby and sit, staring at her, scrutinizing her. From her plump pink lips, to her long eyelashes… Eve was undeniably sexy. Her eyes held a teasing stare that excited me, lured me into her mind. But from the looks of it, her life was a lot darker than I ever imagined it to be.
I heard a phone ring from downstairs and quickly ran to get it, not wanting to get her up. The Caller ID showed ‘Jake’. A rush of possessiveness ran through me, and I picked it up.
“Evelyn, you’re okay.” A male voice said, sounding relieved. “My gosh, I’m so sorry for what happened, Eve, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I swear!”
“Jake, right?” I asked him. If he knew Eve, he would be able to give me some answers.
The line was quiet for a while, till he finally spoke again. “Yeah, who’s this? And why do you have Eve’s phone?”
“I’m Alpha Xavier, of the Photia pack. Eve’s a… friend of mine.” I told him. “She isn’t feeling too well, so she’s resting.”
“Oh crap.” I heard him breathe out. “Ah fudge. This is my fault.”
He was the reason my mate was shaking to her knees?! “What did you do?” I almost growled out.
“Look, chill. She helped us out with an attack by some wolves against our kids.” Eve helped them out? “And the thing is, when she uses her powers, she looks real scary. Her hair is electrified and her eyes glow a wicked red. But today… today she was pissed. She burned them to the ground. To ashes.”
“Shit.” She could do that? I gulped quietly as it dawned on me how powerful Eve was. And she hated my pack. She would hate us more if she found out all the secrets, though. The dirty secrets that were rooted so deep, they ruined and destroyed the pack from within. Secrets that would wreck the walls of every single pack that existed.
“Yeah… wait. Did you say Photia pack?”
“Uh… yeah.” I reluctantly replied. I oped he wouldn’t realize everything and stop talking to me. “Why?”
“Oh, nothing,” He answered a bit too quickly. “Just sounded familiar. Anyways, please tell Eve I called. And that…” He paused for a while, then breathed out. “That I love her.”
My jaw clenched.
He loved her?
He loved HER?!
Adrian, my wolf, tried to take over, but I reeled him in. “Yeah.” My voice was tight. “Sure, I’ll pass the message.”
“Thanks”
Then the line went dead.
I gripped the phone hard. He loved her. Did she love him too? I never even thought about it from her point of view. What if he was her boyfriend? If he could say he loved her, then they obviously had something between them.
I sighed deeply.
That day, I walked into my room to see the window gaping open. I couldn’t smell her. She was gone. Just like that.
It still hurt.
How she left without a goodbye, without a proper reason. Thoughts constantly ran through my head, and they formed the anger. I was always angry. Angry that she didn’t give me a chance. Angry because she left without giving me any closure. But then Thalia came along.
She helped me get over Evelyn, and me see what a real mate should be like. But I wasn’t exactly sure her definition was accurate anymore.
Since Eve was sleeping, I decided to make her something. Finding the kitchen was a bit difficult though, her house was huge. I came across many pictures of her and a guy together, and figured it was Jake.
Ugh, Jake.
When I finally found the food factory, I was shocked to say the least. It was the most elaborate kitchen I’d ever seen. Expensive knives shone brightly when I turned on the lights. The counters were a beautiful marble without a single blemish. It was so neat, I mentally applauded her. If I lived alone, my kitchen would look like a war zone.
I pulled out a few ingredients for spaghetti from her huge gray fridge and got to cooking. Once the smoke extractor came on, I started the sauce.
In about thirty minutes, dinner was ready. I made enough for both of us, since I hadn’t eaten dinner either.
At least I hoped she hadn’t eaten dinner.
I put the food on a tray and walked up the stairs slowly. I didn’t know what was wrong with me. Here I was, the Alpha of a powerful pack, serving a girl dinner?!
‘A girl that is your mate.’ Adrian corrected me.
‘Whatever dude.’ I replied, then blocked him out.
I took in deep breath and let it out, then walked into her room. I set the tray on the small table beside her bed.
“Eve.” I softly called out to her. No reply. I moved to touch her shoulder. “Eve-”
She jerked up, her eyes wide open and alarmed. For a few seconds she simply stared at me. Then she wiped the sleep from her eyes and yawned, arching her back.
Then she frowned.
“Wait…” She started. “What the hell are you doing in my house?”
“I… uh…” I stammered, then cleared my throat. “I came by to tell you that Elder Markus says you need to come with me as soon as possible.”
“Why?” She asked, letting her feet touch the ground. I swallowed hard as my eyes trailed up her legs.
“There’s a full moon next week, and your powers are going to be heightened. So you and your wolf need to get used to our territory so we can manage your powers.”
“Mhm.” She tilted her head to the food, frowning. “What’s that for?”
“Oh, I assumed you hadn’t eaten, so I made dinner for you.”
“Thanks” She said. “But I’m not hungry.”
I frowned. For some reason I didn’t believe her. Especially since she kept sneakily glancing at it. “Are you sure-”
“So we aren’t going to talk about what happened downstairs?” She interrupted me.
“Well you passed out-”
“I mean before that.”
“Well you screamed at me.”
She smiled a bit. “I mean before that.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah. The fact that we practically mauled each other out there?”
There was silence for a while. “Well we are mates so I guess it’s understandable if we-”
Her head moved sharply in my direction. “No, no it’s not understandable.”
And that was that.
She got up and walked over to a door. All I could see from where I was standing is clothes, clothes and more clothes. She rolled out a few suitcases, then went back into the room. “Did you bring your car?”
Her voice was a bit muffled.
“Yeah, I did. Are we going in my car?”
“Hell no.” She came out again, her hands filled with neatly folded clothes. “I’ll go in my car.”
She put the clothes on the bed and opened one of the suitcases. Before she put them inside, she sniffed them and sighed in pleasure.
Adrian growled at the back of my mind when I realized they were male clothes. Were they Jake’s clothes?
Back and forth, she went. Shoes, clothes and toiletries. I didn’t know whether to be happy or disturbed that she wasn’t bothered by my presence in the room. My stomach grumbled, so I picked up a plate and moved to the other side of the bed to sit down. Before I could land on it though, Eve yelled.
“Don’t sit there!” I nearly dropped the plate. I turned to look at her for a second then apologized. She sighed and went back into her closet.
“Sorry.” I went back the the chair and enjoyed my meal. At least I was. My phone started buzzing and I pulled it out of my pocket.
Thalia.

I was quite surprised to see Xavier, to say the least.Worst part about it, the idiot actually helped me.He didn’t notice me leave the room to get my phone, since he was on a call.I noticed my phone wasn’t on the couch where I left it, but it was on the table. The most recent call I had was from Jake. Had he called again?“Xavier!” I yelled. He came out holding the tray and moved down the stairs.“Yeah?”“When did Jake call?” I placed my hands on my hips, waiting for an explanation. Just because I was cursed to have him as my mate and we were getting married did not give him the right to involve himself in my life, and I needed him to know that.“Oh, yeah.” He said, walking into the kitchen. I followed
I’m angry.Furious, even.Tyler is staring back at me with a wild expression and a gaping mouth. “Evelyn? -““It’s Eve.” I snapped and pushed past him into the house. Just like I remembered, I made my way to Xavier’s room and set my suitcases aside. The room was clean, thankfully, and it smelled like coffee and peppermint. It smelled like Xavier.I felt like taking a soak, so I stripped, grabbed my towel and pj’s, then entered the bathroom with my scented soap.Halfway through my bath, I heard the door open and close, I knew it was Xavier from the smell, so I wasn’t bothered. I lay in there, thinking about how messed up my life had become. I had to come back to the same people that tortured me. I already knew that Elena and Ajax would come back and try to paw off more information from me; about my powers, and my ‘parents’
BOOM!A loud noise woke me from my sleep. Xavier was already up and slipping on a shirt.“Eve, stay in here. I mean it. Don’t come out.” Mindlessly, I nodded. I watched him rush out sof the room, and the thumping of boots.Yells and shouts erupted, and they only got louder each second. I could hear guns going off, and the Photia pack cry made the walls vibrate. We were at war.Not the first time I was disobeying Xavier, and it definitely wouldn’t be the last. I jumped out of bed and slipped on a pair of slippers, grabbing the door. I twisted, turned, pushed and pulled, but the door didn’t budge. The idiot locked the door! The windows were locked too, there was no way out. How am I going to get out? My breathing became heavy as anxiety made it’s way up my throat.Red.All I could see was red.My eyes closed for a short second, but when I opened them again, I was st
…Xavier…Damn it, this crazy girl. I warned her. I told her exactly, don’t come outside. But does Eve listen? No, she doesn’t she never does. And now I’m just going to have to make her listen. No matter how hard it’ll be.I took her to the pack doctor, and he mumbled something about her body needing to revive itself. Well, it’s been two days, and she’s still not awake. I’d been at the hospital throughout the time, and I noticed she’d been mumbling stuff I couldn’t quite make out.“…dark, dark dark…” She’d say, then go quiet again. Little did I know, it was the start of something dangerous.***A few days after, Eve woke up. Something was off though; her eyes weren’t their usual color. They were a lot darker. The doctor examined her and noted it, but felt it was because they were closed for quite a while. I di
XavierBlake’s body was taken out of the house quickly after, and burial arrangements were made. Later that night, I trudged up the stairs and entered my room to see Eve with tears in her eyes, and a few leaking onto her cheeks. She lifted her head up to look at me. “He’s dead, isn’t he?” She whispered. She was sitting on the bed and hugging her knees. “I saw the… the stretcher and they-” Her breathing caught in her throat, and she wheezed, crying. For a few moments, I simply stood at the door of the darkroom, watching her. Then my feet moved on their own accord, and I put my arms around her and wrapped her in a hug. She wrapped her hands around my neck and cried into my shirt.“He wasn’t supposed to die.” She mumbled. “He wasn’t supposed to-“Thinking about it, I remembered that she didn’t know him for that long. But then she spoke again. “I r
Xavier After Elder Markus left, I waited for Eve in the living room, and Sebastian, my best friend, walked in. “Hey.” He nodded to me, and we shook hands. We hadn’t really been able to talk much since Eve arrived because I told him I needed to have some time with her first. That, he understood. His mate, Selena died a couple of months before, and he was trying to get used to the single life again. “How are you holding up?” I asked him, looking at the dark circles that colored his eyes. “Meh.” He shrugged, sitting down on the opposite couch. “How’s Evelyn?” “Don’t call her that.” I quickly said. He looked at me with confusion. “Her name’s Eve.” “Well okay.” He chuckled. “Her name’s only used in some kinky stuff?” He wiggled his eyebrows. “No-“ “Well, not unless you’re using it on me.” Eve’s voice came. She materialized in a black crop top, a mini skirt and thigh high boot
CHAPTER THIRTEEN At the movies, Eve had a smile on her face throughout. She looked like a kid in a candy store. After I paid for the popcorn, drinks and tickets, we walked into the almost empty theatre. During the movie, she was as quiet as a mouse. At the littlest movement, she would snap her eyes to me and hush me, with her nose scrunched up. It was adorable. At the part where the main character cut off a guy’s head, my arms were wide open for her to jump in, but I found out that I was the one screeching like a girl. She laughed at me for a full two minutes, and tears leaked from her eyes. Annoying thing was, whenever the laughter died down, she’d look at me then burst into laughter again. When the screen credits rolled out, we left the theatre and headed home. Eve had a small frown on her face. “Why the frown?” I asked, looking at her through the mirror. She shook her head. “Nothing much, my fingers hurt for
