Avalyn POV
Pounding. Heavily, my heart pounding .
But why did I smell chemicals?
I was trying to understand where I was, but my eyelids were too heavy to lift.
My hand rested upon my head. The throbbing was ever so present. It hurt to even think. The fatigue had finally set into my body, and even moving the slightest made me wince in pain.Where was I?
I heard whispers in the dark. It sounded like two women were talking. I could barely make out what they were saying, and I didn’t recognize their voices.
“She isn’t good… No, I don’t think she can..”
“… she has to get better first… conceive…”
“… maybe there is a chance… Pregnancy…. I have a supplement that will help… It can carry…”
Who were they talking about? It sounded like a poor girl with tons of issues. May the moon goddess bless her, I thought. I hoped she got better soon.
I didn’t mean to eavesdrop on their conversation. Deciding to give them their privacy, I thought back on everything that had happened.
However, for a moment, my mind went completely blank. My head hurt again. I still could not open my eyes.
But then the memory slowly flowed back to me…That’s right, I was… the daughter of the Alpha. After my mother passed away, I did everything I could to help take care of my pack and my father. I knew my life was difficult and not the life I should have had. But it was still mine.
A few small tears escaped my eyes thinking back to the promise I made so many years ago.
Mother made my father and me promise to look after each other. I had done everything I could to care for him over the years, but… it seemed that I was never able to do enough to please him, and he just hated who I was.And then… and then he sold me.
I took a sharp breath and clenched my hands. My heart ached so much with that thought that I could not breathe for a few seconds.
How could he? I was his only blood-related child. His daughter. And he sold me to an Alpha with a ruthless reputation, one who could kill me at any moment.
My eyes snapped open, and fear flooded back into me.I had arrived at the Draco pack!
I remembered how I got into Logan’s car, my nervousness and fear coursing through me.
Staring out the window, I had watched the shadows beyond the treeline dance about in my vision with the droplets of rain cascading down the window…
Then my vision became blurry, and I must have fallen asleep. Why did I end up in the hospital, though?
“…she should be awake now,” one of the female voices said quietly.
I suddenly realized that “the poor girl” was very likely not someone else but me!I held my breath. If they had been talking about me… what did they mean? Pregnancy… conceive… what did they want from me?!
My body started to tremble again, and as soon as it did, it hurt. Every move I made was throbbing. I knew that it was the pain from my beatings finally setting in.
“Logan, here you are! I was about to bringher some food. She has to be hungry.” I didn’t know who she was, but she sounded kind.
"Then do it quickly, Rebecca. The Alpha will be here soon."
The white curtain close to my bed flew back, and a woman with bright red hair stood there with a bright smile upon her face.
All eyes turned towards me, and I scrambled back in the bed.I couldn’t move much. I realized I was stillin my long white dress."Avalyn, It's okay," a brown-haired woman
said as she stepped towards me. The smileon her face made me relaxed a little.."I'm Doctor Natalie, but you can call me
Nat.".I looked towards Nat and recognized her voice; she was the one who mentioned “pregnancy” earlier. I tried to give her a smile, but I wasn’t sure whether I was successful.
Before I could say anything, the red-haired young woman jumped in, “Are you hungry?”
She was the owner of the other voice. Rebecca.
I shook my head slowly. I was hungry at first, but now I was too concerned over what I overheard.I felt like I had a knot in my stomach. The Alpha of Draco bought me as his maid, or at least that was what they had said. What kind of maid… ?
“Poor girl. You look pale.” Rebecca sat down next to me. “But don’t worry. You’re going to be alright. Nat is the best doctor in our pack,” she tried to reassure me.
“Oh, I forgot to introduce myself,” she added. “I’m Rebecca, Logan’s sister.”
I knew her name from their earlier conversation already, but I was surprised to find out Rebecca and Logan were siblings because of their
different personalities. Rebecca was a very cute girl and quite chatty, while Logan was quiet most of the time.“I am glad you’re awake, Avalyn.” Nat helped me sit up. “I just want to check your vitals quickly, if that’s okay.”
As she moved towards me, I flinched, and she held her hands up, trying to show me she meant no harm. I gave her a nod. Seeing no further objections from me, she started to take my temperature.
Rebecca looked at me with asoft expression as she touched the end of the bed.
“You really need to try, and eat something, Ava. You’ll feel so much better…”I did not have any appetite, still wondering what they were going to do with me, but I wasn’t sure what would happen if I disobeyed her.
“…But If you can’t right now… just let me know when you’re ready and I will bring you food!” she finished her sentence.
I looked at Rebecca with appreciation.Thank goodness she didn’t seem to be upset with my lack of cooperation.
I glanced over and saw Logan. He stood against the wall with his arms crossed, but his eyes never left what Nat was doing.
The tense feeling within my body began to subside, and I was somewhat relieved.
They were merciless Draco wolves, yes. But, so far, they hadn’t been horrible to me. The awful reputation of this pack was probably all due to the rumors about their evil Alpha…“This dress is beautiful on you. I can tell it’s handmade. Who made it for you?”
Rebecca had changed the topic, and for some reason, I felt like she was trying to cheer me up. When was the last time someone tried to cheer me up?“It was a gift from…”
I couldn’t finish my words as I felt tears start to well up again.“Becca… She doesn’t want to talk right now. Let’s not overwhelm her all at once.”
Logan finally spoke, looking towards Rebecca. She hesitated for a second and let out a sigh before smiling back at me.
“He is right. I’m sorry, Ava. You need your rest….”
They were supposed to be killers, so why were they being so nice to me?However, I knew I couldn’t rest.“May I ask what kind of work am I supposed to do?”
I tried to lift the blanket off my body, holding back the pain in my body as I moved. My father had taken their alpha’s money, and I needed to work to pay off the debt. I didn’t want to be the maid of a dangerous and brutal Alpha forever.
No one answered me, andI looked up.
All of a sudden, everyone stopped talking. Nat quickly finished up my vital check and put away the equipment, while Rebecca moved closer to Logan.
Rebecca seemed so uncomfortable all of the sudden. Her bubbly and happy nature drained away as she moved closer to Logan.
Logan himself was standing up straight like he always does. Even Nat, who had just been relaxed and carefree, had taken on a more professional demeanor. She stood firm as if she was waiting for her next directive. What was going on…?
I heard footsteps approaching. Two…maybe three people?
A tall, dark figure entered my dimly lit room.
He was a giant of a man with tan skin and jet-black hair. His jawline was strong and accented the masculinity he held. I had never seen a man move the way he did, graceful yet with a merciless glint that laid behind his gorgeous eyes.
He was all the way across the room, but even the aura that seemed to surround him showed the power he held, and it terrified me.I had met dangerous men. My stepbrother Andrew and even my father had shown me pain throughout my life… but neither of them held the same intimidation this man carried.
He glanced over me. I couldn’t help but notice how his blue eyes seemed to pierce into my very soul.Thud, thud, thud.I could hear my heart beating fast. How could someone be so dangerous yet alluring? Why did I feel drawn to him?The moment he set foot into the room, it became eerily quiet. So quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
I was so captivated with his appearance that it took me a moment to realize the change in the mood from the others around me.
Rebecca, Logan, and Nat all had their eyes cast to the floor, and their necks were turned slightly towards him—a common show of submission within wolves. There was only one occasion when I had known wolves to act in this kind of manner, and that was for…Realization sunk in, and I felt myself begin to panic. It was clear as day, and I was so blinded by the sight of him that I didn’t notice.
This was him—the Alpha of Draco, Alpha Grey!
“Alpha!” Logan greeted the man with respect. The giant, gorgeous man acknowledged him with a simple nod, an aura radiating off of him that reeked of authority. He looked towards Natalie, who immediately pulled out her report. “Alpha, Miss Avalyn is still quite weak, but with proper care, she should be much better in two weeks.”His expression didn’t change, but he moved as she spoke. He was coming towards me!I had never seen such movement—graceful and swift, faster than any wolf I had ever encountered. So fast that, in the blink of an eye, he was at my bedside. The faint scent of musk surrounded me. The earthly aroma reminded me of the forest on a rainy day, and it replaced the smell of sterile chemicals in the ward. It was cold but almost psychedelic, just like him.I couldn’t help but lower my head. Through the gap in my hair, I saw his black leather shoes stop right next to my bed, with the toe of the shoe aimed in my direction. He had to be staring at me! I didn’t need to see to
My father lied to me. I wasn’t sold as a maid. How naive I was to believe what he said?A BREEDER!What does being a breeder even mean? Carrying a child…? No… no…No matter how difficult my life had become, no matter how desperate I was, I had always still prayed that one day I could find my mate. Someone would take me away, save me, and love me. This was my only and my last hope in this life. And they took it away. Why did they have to be so cruel to me?“No.. please,” I begged, not sure of what else to say or do. “I can work hard. I will pay back all the money you gave him. Just, please… Anything but a breeder.”The man sat there quietly, watching me. He didn’t say a word, but his gaze grew colder. The narrowing of his eyes in that moment showed that he did not appreciate my outburst. I knew without a doubt that the powerful hand he had could clamp around my throat and kill me easily..Every part of me knew the wise thing to do was to stop talking and back away from this dangerous c
Logan’s POVLooking at Rebecca, I nodded for her to take over the situation.Alpha Grey was done with the girl for the night.Rebecca and Natalie still needed to get Avalyn to eat something and take some rest. There wasn’t much need for me in the hospital at the moment, so I followed my Alpha out.Alpha Grey wasn’t just my Alpha. He was my best friend, and the position of Beta was given to me out of trust. However, no matter how close we were, I was first his subordinate, then his friend. Either way, though, he had my absolute loyalty.I was quite surprised to hear what he had said to Avalyn.I tried to catch up with him. He made his way down the hospital hallway before exiting the double doors which led out into the front lawn near the pack house. He was moving quicker than his usual pace, but I wasn’t aware of anything else on his agenda tonight. He turned quickly, and made his way towards his office. I followed him in, closing the door behind us.Strictly executing every single one
Avalyn POVA few days had gone by since I had been brought to my room. The first moment I stepped into it, I was in utter shock over how beautiful it was, and the fact that he was asking me to stay here.Well… he wasn’t really asking me himself. In fact, I had not seen him since the day he left the hospital. It was a sunny day, and the clear blue sky was lovely. It reminded me of that pair of dangerous yet captivating eyes of his.The cold-hearted Alpha of Draco, Grey… and my master. It had been two weeks since I last saw him. A part of me longed with curiosity to see him again, but yet… I was also terrified.Shaking my head, I tried to brush off the thoughts about him. I should have been happy that I didn’t have to face that scary man.“Avalyn!”Knocking at the door drew my attention. As I stood from the small chaise in the room, I watched Rebecca enter.“Good morning! I just wanted to make sure they brought your breakfast already.”She saw the almost-still-full plate, and sat down
Avalyn's POVTime might not heal everything, but it did heal me physically.Another week went by, I was feeling better than I ever had.I made sure to stick to the diet Natalie had designed for me. I went to every doctor’s appointment and did the light exercise of walking regularly to make me stronger. I wasn’t one hundred percent there yet, but I was improving steadily everyday.I was surprised by how fast I recovered when I put my efforts in. Then again, I bore Alpha blood.Since there was no way for me to look back, I persuaded myself to feel better about the situation. By the time this was done and over with, I would be in a much better place. I would be healthier, and I would have freedom. It was an hour after I had my dinner. I looked out of the window and saw the evening sky casting shadows across the pack grounds. This was the only leisure time I was given every day outside of my busy treatment schedule.I took a book from the library to the small reading nook of my room. The
Avalyn‘s POV All of sudden, the body weight on me was lifted, and my wrists were released. Almost at the same time, a soft blanket was thrown over my body. I snapped my eyes open in disbelief. He stopped. Why? My gaze went to his face as he propped himself up on the bed. His expression seemed distant, and maybe a little concerned—I wasn‘t sure. Then I watched as he pulled back and pick up his clothes. I could see the broadness of his back, the curves and firmness of every muscle. There was nothing but power radiating off of him. He was the largest, yet finest man I had ever seen. As he buttoned his shirt, I realized what a coward I was. I had ruined it… No, I couldn‘t fail this task. I couldn‘t disappoint him. I had to do this! If I didn‘t, what would happen to my pack, my father… and me? Panic rose in me. I got up as quickly as I could and grabbed the bottom edge of his shirt before he got the chance to tuck it back in. I couldn‘t let him leave. I had to complete my task! “Please
Logan's POV After the conversation I had with Alpha Grey, I went to see Natalie the next day. She had made sure to put Avalyn on a strict diet and rest order to ensure she gained her strength back. A couple weeks had passed, and Avalyn had been improving steadily, both physically and mentally. Natalie convinced me that Avalyn needed to get out of the house. That way, she wouldn‘t feel like she was a prisoner within our walls – of course, she would always need to be accompanied. Usually, I watched Avalyn from a distance. My sister Rebecca had taken over being Avalyn's caretaker when it came to venturing outside of the main house. The two of them got along quite well. I knew that Rebecca's heart would break, though, when Alpha Grey had Avalyn killed. Avalyn was a kind spirit that you couldn‘t hate even if you tried. She did no wrong, and I didn‘t understand how her family treated her the way they did. “Logan!”Rebecca's voice filtered through the air, and I turned in the hallway
Avalyn's POV The graceful elegance of the white and gold piano reminded me of the one my mother used to have. The thought was both painful and pleasant at the same time. It had been so long since I touched any instruments. Until recently, I had forgotten that music used to be such an important and joyful part of my life. Thinking over the memory, I slid onto the golden stool and let my fingers brush over the keys. It only took me a few moments to get used to playing again, but once I did, I was totally immersed in the melody. It was like reuniting with a dear old friend with whom you could immediately reconnect emotionally, no matter how long it had been since you‘d seen each other. I may have been sold to a ruthless Alpha – but this was still my life. The people here were not all awful or hurtful toward me. In fact, many of them cared for me, although I didn‘t understand what I had done to deserve their kindess, especially Natalie and Rebecca. When I was free and left here, I woul
Lilly POV “It‘s all right, honey,” my mother said, smoothing my hair. “We‘ll be alright. Just stay quiet for a bit longer, and then the wolves upstairs will go, and we‘ll be safe.” I looked up at my mother and nodded, but wasn‘t sure I believed her. We had run down here, my older brother, my mother, and I, about an hour ago, when we‘d first gotten word from the village guard that there were unknown wolves spotted in the woods near our homes. Some of the other villages nearby had been attacked recently, so we‘d been on high alert. None of us had slept for the last few nights. We‘d heard that there were more warriors on the way to protect us, but so far, we hadn‘t seen any.Upstairs, the floor creaked, and some glass broke. I held my breath, terrified. I thought about all of my friends from school. Would I even be there tomorrow? We were supposed to have our seventh–grade assessments. It should‘ve been the last thing on my mind. “We should shift, Mom. Me and you need to be in our
Avalyn POVThe following days after the dinner, Soren was in the house more often than before. However, he still seemed to be working in the study or on phone calls most of the time.Meanwhile, I had been busy reading the books Lola dropped off.Or, in other words… I had been busy keeping myself busy.“The Isles of Denali consist of over a hundred small islands, many of which have their own unique culture…”“…Although the islands do not have as abundant natural resources as the East continent, their comfortable climate, variety of sea products, and unique cultures still make them one of the best choices for those who are seeking a peaceful and relaxing lifestyle. They hold special appeal for those who are from the far deserts of the West continent…”I was flipping through the travel magazine on my warm cozy bed under the morning sun when I heard a knock on the door again.“Come in.” I called out softly, expecting to see Lola. She normally dropped off breakfast for me around this hour.
Avalyn POV Three days had passed since I had arrived at Avondale..The island had lovely weather. However, I spent most of the time in my room. As Soren insisted, I needed to take it very slow for my recovery just to be safe, for the baby‘s sake. That was the doctor‘s order, as well. The lovely scent from the fresh flowers, the morning sun pouring in through the window to land softly on my blanket– everything was perfect, but it just felt irrelevant to me. I‘d gotten away from Alpha Grey, and I had gotten the freedom that I wanted. So why wasn‘t I happy? I tried not to think about him, because every time I did, it felt like there was a huge weight on my chest and I could barely breathe. I had gotten this far, and I knew I should carry on with my new life– but my heart was telling me that it just needed a little more time.It was painful to be alone right now. I needed to find something to keep myself occupied so that I wouldn‘t think about Alpha Grey. I sat up when I heard a kno
Logan POVI rejoined Alpha Grey outside the meeting room after hearing out from the witness. Neither of us spoke until we got to Alpha Grey's suite. As he closed the door behind us, his look turned even more solemn.“Alpha,” I began, “if it really is him working with the rogues, I‘m worried that our pack…”Grey walked over to the map. “Send Natalie back to Draco and tell Rex to reorganize our defenses back home. Move the residents from the outskirts back to the city center, and increase the patrol back home.”“Are we not going back?”“No. Rogue attacks are problems, but any alphas could deal with them, and they have been dealing with it. But the war against Kal is a military operation. If we lose it, we will lose more than just a few villages. My priority has to be on the west coast.”“I understand,” I said with a sigh. “I‘m still worried about Draco. The rogues are taking advantage of the war. What if…”“His target is me, and only me… I‘ll need to talk to James to move our men to th
Avalyn POV I relaxed a little–but not completely.“Who are you?” I asked him. He was tall, with a muscular build. He had that same strong, chiseled jawline and dark hair, though his wasn‘t black like Alpha Grey. They looked so very much the same. There were clear differences between them, but they were slight– the dip of his nose, the space between his eyes, and his eyes. They reminded me of Alpha Grey, but they were gray. The biggest difference, though, was this man‘s smile. It came so easily, so naturally, like the sun rising in the morning and setting in the evening. It just happened without effort. In all of the time I was with Alpha Grey, how often did I see him smile? Hardly ever at all, and when I did, it always seemed forced. The man‘s expression thus made it impossible to mistake him for Alpha Grey. Who was this person? And could I trust him? Just like with the dangers of the forest – a coiled snake behind a fallen log, a beautiful tantalizing mushroom that might be p
Grey POV “Not only are these cities along the west coast being attacked, but we‘ve also gotten requests for reinforcements from both the eastern and northern borders,” Logan said, reporting the latest news to me as we were walking back to my suite. “On what scale?” I asked. “Scattered. Doesn‘t seem to be military actions– more like rogues.” “Any information on which group is behind it?” “No, Alpha, It could be multiple groups. The roques all know most of our men are now at the West coast fighting against Alpha Kal‘s invasion. They’re not going to miss this opportunity.” We stopped at my door. “Ok, give me the map and the report. I‘ll take a look at it later tonight. You can let James know first thing in the morning.”Logan stood there, but he didn‘t move. “What else?” I didn‘t lift my head as I flipped through the pages of the reports from the frontline and pictures of the most recently assaulted villages. “Alpha, it‘s already two in the morning. We have the steering committee
Grey POV I had two hours before I met with Logan later tonight. Walking into the bedroom I sank down on the bed, falling backward and staring up at the ceiling, willing my mind to go blank. During the day, it was easy enough. There was plenty to do, especially with the conflicts heating up along the border. I could focus my rage on the enemy. But now..It had been more than three days. Despite all of my men‘s efforts, we had found no trace of Avalyn's body, not even a scrap of fabric. The river rushed through the rocks there, and the cliffs were jagged and full of crags. There were a thousand places for evidence to hide. The sun was setting and it was getting dark, but I didn‘t bother to turn on the light. All of a sudden, I seemed to hear a sound from the living area.I got up to check it out, but froze as soon as I entered the room.In the dark sat a figure that I thought I would never see again. Someone I could not help but recognize instantly, no matter where, no matter when.
Avalyn POV Luckily, I didn‘t have much time to think about Alpha Grey in the next few days, as they flew by thanks to Seraphine‘s company. She had been to all sorts of different places and had lots of fun stories to tell. “You should have seen his face, dear.” I leaned in. I was so drawn to her story that I put down my fork. “Don‘t stop eating, Ava. The food will do you well.”. She patted my hand, and when she saw me put food in my mouth again, she continued, “The big bad wolf thought of himself as a monster, but at the sight of his pup being born, he passed out upon the floor.” Our laughter fluttered through the air. Seraphine concluded, “So no matter how tough men seem to be, you never know what to expect when they see their baby for the first time.” Suddenly, the joy of the story dissipated, and I felt a pang in my heart.I couldn‘t help but wonder, what would Alpha Grey‘s reaction have been if he were there to witness the arrival of his own child? “Seraphine” – I tried to
Avalyn POV A small jolt woke me from my sleep. When I sat up, I quickly realized the boat was swaying from side to side, leaving the most uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. I had known that I would most likely get seasickness, but I had hoped I would be one of the fortunate ones who didn‘t. “Uhh…” | groaned, walking towards the bathroom.Splashing some water on my face, I tried to sweep away the grime of my previous adventures, hoping it would draw the sickness away from me. But even though it disappeared for a moment, as soon as I stepped back out into the room, it was back in full force. I tried with all my might to remember things I had read in one of my many books to help get through this, but no matter what I did, it wouldn‘t ease up.Deciding on getting some fresh air, I tied my hair up into a ponytail and put on casual clothing, including a chunky knit sweater. Before I headed to the deck, I also put on my dark sunglasses to try to hide my appearance more. I knew that I
