Dr. Lovewitt was over in just a few hours. We managed to sneak Mateo in through the gardens and into the manor undetected. Marlon had him lied down on his bed while Dr. Lovewitt examined him. Mateo was still burning up, and yet he was shaking to his core. I had never seen him look like this before; his cheeks were still red, and his eyes were watering without him actually crying. His lips looked a bit puffy as well. His features seemed to be thinning out a bit as well; as though he hasn’t been eating. But the bottles in the fridge have been disappearing so that didn’t make much sense to me.Dr. Lovewitt knew better than to ask further questions about Mateo and ask why he was still residing in the manor. Regardless, Marlon would never reveal the truth.I sat beside Mateo with tears staining my features as my sweet baby boy struggled to grasp his breath. Dr. Lovewitt placed a small IV of a clear liquid in Mateo’s right arm; Mateo also had a breathing mask because he was struggling to br
“You let him take our son!!!” I cried to Marlon; I was pacing around his study frantically.Tears stained my features, and I could hardly breathe. I just watched a light-furred doctor walk out the door with Mateo wrapped in a blanket and wearing a bonnet as a disguise. My body was trembling, and I could hardly keep my composure.Marlon seemed too calm for his own good; he was so wound up not long ago but now he was sitting there and staring at me like I was overreacting. My dark-furred son was heading into a kingdom full of racists that would have a field day with him and wouldn’t hesitate to throw him on a slave farm.“Relax,” Marlon said, sounding annoyed as I continued to pace through the study.I was feeling hot all over with anger when he said that.“Dr. Lovewitt knows that if anything happens to Mateo, he’ll have me to answer to. I assure you, it wouldn’t be worth it for him,” Marlon assured me.I knew he was right; Marlon was intimidating and terrifying. Dr. Lovewitt would be s
It’s been almost a week since Mateo was taken from me; my body felt numb, and I no longer felt like my own person. I still had to study though and maintain my grades at school; I was lucky enough that I haven’t been discovered yet. I told everyone that I wasn’t allowed to remove my hair wrapping due to personal religious reasons.Religion has always been a touchy subject for almost everybody, so nobody really questioned me any further on it.I’ve been reading a lot in the academy’s library about politics and about how the noblemen’s spot isn’t as stable as everyone thinks. They are always in jeopardy of being overthrown and if the king finds you disagreeable with his rules, he can either have you killed or replaced.I thought about how Marlon signed away the rights of slaves and couldn’t help but wonder if it was because he wanted to due to being a racist pig, or because the king made him. Lately, I’ve been seeing Marlon a bit differently; he’s shown me his more vulnerable side and op
Marlon fears that he had said too much to Deonna. He found himself being more open and vulnerable to her and now she was feeling more comfortable speaking with him. Not that it mattered anymore; he already adapted to the fact that she was loosening herself up to him and not feeling as threatened. He came to realize that he didn’t really want her to fear him. His wolf didn’t want her to fear him. His wolf was drawn to her in a way that he’s never been drawn to anybody before. He thought his world was going to crumble when Deonna found Ashley’s journal. He couldn’t help but feel worried that she was going to start seeing him as Ashley saw him.Unlovable. Unchanged. Disgraceful. A money machine. Cold. Unbothered.Thankfully, it didn’t seem as though Deonna read too much of the journal and stopped after a couple of entries. She was right about Ashley’s confliction in her feelings towards him, but he knew that Ashely didn’t love him, and he wasn’t even sure if he loved Ashley. Though, Deon
Marlon wasn’t sure what he was planning on doing about Deonna, but he knew she couldn’t stay in the shack apart from the manor any longer. It was way too risky having her there when the duke and most likely his men, were going to be lurking around the manor. The last time he had a visitor at the manor, he somehow stumbled across Deonna in the shack, and he wasn’t going to allow that to happen again. He was relieved when Dr. Lovewitt channeled him through the wolf’s link about Mateo’s condition, only a few hours after the Roessler boys had left to gather as many strong wolves as they could. “I was able to rid him of the poison. He’s back to breathing on his own and his fever had gone down a lot. I’m going to keep an eye on his condition a bit longer before returning him to you. So far, he hasn’t been detected by others though. I’m trying to keep it that way, but he grows hot with the bonnet, so I had to remove it a few times,” Dr. Lovewitt said. Marlon couldn’t help but roll his eyes
Marlon couldn’t know what I just found out; I didn’t want him to know that I was on to him and that I knew about my parent’s death. He had just confessed to me his feelings towards me and then I find out he’s been keeping this secret from me.How long has he known about this?I felt sick just thinking about it.If I had to guess, I would say he knew about this from day one; the moment I stepped onto the Roessler grounds he probably knew about it. He didn’t think to tell me; I get that I was nothing more than a dirtball slave to him, but he didn’t think I had the right to know about my own parent’s death?Who am I kidding? Of course, I didn’t have the right to know about their deaths. I was a slave. I wasn’t anything more than that; except now I was a slave with a child. Marlon’s child. He lied to me.Everything that comes out of his mouth was a lie. Did he really expect me to believe that he had feelings for me? He was known to be one of the racist men in the country and I thought for
Marlon had no idea what was going on with Deonna, but he couldn’t ponder too much about it. She was fine the night before during their night of passion; he even went as far as to tell her of his feelings towards her. Granted he probably shouldn’t have done that because she was right, she was a slave. But she was also more to that to him; it took him up until recently to admit that to himself. But his wolf had always known that and has been trying to tell him that since Deonna arrived. Now, she was acting cold and distant towards him. Perhaps his confession rubbed her the wrong way, and it took until this morning for her to realize it. He worried he came off too strong and that he was losing her forever. He had to brush that thought out of his mind though because, from the sounds of the pounding at the manor, the duke had arrived.Once Marlon reached the foyer, he was faced with the duke and a couple of the duke’s men. A couple of Marlon’s guards stood nearby along with Winston who was
I felt as though I couldn’t breathe; I was holding my breath the entire time the Duke of North-Valley and Marlon were in the small foyer area, right outside the door. I could hear them so clearly it was as if they were standing right next to me. The duke had touched the door handle and I could nearly see my life flashing before my eyes. The room was closing in on me and I kept thinking to myself, “this is it. This is how I’m going to die. At the hands of a duke.”I guess there could be worse ways to die, but then what about Mateo? It’s how he would die too, and I didn’t want that for him. I could hear the footsteps of the men on the floor above me; they were raiding through the manor to specifically look for Mateo and me.How did they even find out about us?We’ve been doing so well at keeping us on the down-low.I kept Mateo, who was still sleeping, pressed firmly against my chest, even after the duke was gone. My body was trembling, and I felt tears burning in my eyes. I don’t know
