The snow that enchanted me so much on the first day, now just annoys me. It was a long, brutal winter, and there were no signs that it would let up any time soon. Some days, we couldn’t even get out of the castle, because the snow reached halfway up the doors. “I haven’t seen anything like it since I was a pup,” Kane said one afternoon while we watched Adare trying to roll over onto his stomach. “Still, it’s nice to be with my family for once.”

He was right. There was a kind of peace that settled over the castle, and everyone was more at ease. After all, if we couldn’t leave, no one could get in, so it looked like the war was put on hold for the time being.

But it also meant my mother was stuck here, and she used every excuse she could to get close to us. I tried my best to stay away from her, but she had the uncanny ability to find me the moment I set foot outside our apartment.
