Chapter 213

The snow that enchanted me so much on the first day, now just annoys me. It was a long, brutal winter, and there were no signs that it would let up any time soon. Some days, we couldn’t even get out of the castle, because the snow reached halfway up the doors. “I haven’t seen anything like it since I was a pup,” Kane said one afternoon while we watched Adare trying to roll over onto his stomach. “Still, it’s nice to be with my family for once.”

He was right. There was a kind of peace that settled over the castle, and everyone was more at ease. After all, if we couldn’t leave, no one could get in, so it looked like the war was put on hold for the time being.

But it also meant my mother was stuck here, and she used every excuse she could to get close to us. I tried my best to stay away from her, but she had the uncanny ability to find me the moment I set foot outside our apartment.

Every other day, Patrick and Mina visited us, and every afternoon Tully would join us as soon as she was

I wake from the sound of the something breaking and crashing to the ground. I gasp and sit upright, my heart pounding and body shaking. “It’s okay,” Kane says in his calm voice. “It’s just ice break.” I look around the room, finding him in my usual spot by the window, one leg on the windowsill, the other dangling down to the floor. “Come look,” he said. On my way to him, I look in on Adare, who is sleeping peacefully. He only wakes once during the night now, which I found concerning until Kane told me that werewolf babies develop faster than human babies. I get on the sill next to him, but he pulls me into his warm embrace so my back is to his front. It’s been a while since we sat together like this, just enjoying each other’s quiet presence. As I watch on, a huge chunk of ice breaks off the roof and falls past our window, landing on the concrete below with a nerve shattering crash. I jerk in Kane’s arms, and he tightens his hold on me. “You’ve been nervous lately.” “I’ve never se

Kane's POV It’s a long night. Minutes after the news report aired, I start to get calls from angry Alphas and worried council members, even a few witches and a handful of other supernaturals. Our reprieve is over. All I had to do these last few months was to check in on our businesses, but Patrick is a fast learner, and all I need to do these days is go over contracts to sign them, or take the occasional call from a business partner who doesn’t want to deal with anyone else but me. Facing reality is worse than I thought it would be. I became comfortable and complacent, and I fooled myself into believing that it would last forever. Most of the night, Willow sits with me, offering little pearls of wisdom, but at some point, she drifts off to sleep again. I don’t blame her. I’d go back to sleep too if I could. I cover her with a blanket and start to make my own preparations. I go to my office with the baby monitor, and start to write letters. We’ll do this the old-fashioned way beca

Kane's POV “Did you tell Carl what I needed?” I ask Remi as we step out of the apartment. “Yes, your majesty,” he answers. “And we have banned electronic communications within the castle.” I nod my thanks. A complete ban on all technology is slight overkill, but it’s the easiest way for now. If I allow a wolf to email her grandmother in Greece today, she’ll ask her cousin about their war preparations tomorrow. Everyone always thinks they’re the one not being watched, the one that can get away with it, and it’s usually that person who thinks they're untouchable who'll bring about our downfall. Our procession through the castle is solemn. In sharp contrast to the exuberance and energy a week ago when the snow started melting, everyone in the castle is subdued and afraid today. Those who didn’t see the news report last night would have heard about it by now from the others. We meet Jackson in the reception hall. Most of the wolves are already here, but we can’t start until we’ve take

Kane's POV I don’t move from my seat. All I can do is sit here and hold my head, feeling sorry for myself. No one says anything else, not even Willow, which has to be some kind of miracle. The world outside my own head dims to nothingness as I get caught up in my own thoughts and emotions. Goddess, how I wish I could tear my feelings out and hurl them back into the pits, feed them to the soul reapers. The dark creatures should enjoy it, and right I don't want it anyway. At some point someone, I think it’s Jackson, pushes a bottle of water into my hands that are dangling limply between my knees. Without looking up, I take the water but don’t drink any of it even though my throat aches and burns. It wasn’t just all the talking that fucked me up. It was the oaths. Doing that many at once is mentally and emotionally draining. If any of the wolves die, and some of them will die, all four of us will feel their deaths. “You should go,” Willow says. It sounds very much like an order. Fina

Just as I start to gather the things Kane left behind – the oath box, scissors, and dagger – I hear a commotion outside. I leave the tools, but tuck the box under my arm. Something tells me it’s a bad idea to leave such a powerful magical item lying around unsupervised. There are about two dozen wolves gathered outside, with Mario and Demi refusing to step aside so they can come inside, and they’re about ready to go to war with my guards because of it. “What’s going on?” I ask. Mario pulls me back into the hall and closes the door behind him. “They want to swear loyalty to you.” “To me?” I ask. “Why?” “I don’t know, I didn’t ask.” “Well--” I hesitate, unsure what to say or how to react --“maybe they just want to swear to the kingdom,” I say. “I’ll tell them to come back tomorrow, and the king can handle it.” “No,” Mario says. “They insist they want to do it today, and…they are our wolves, I know, but I don’t think you should do it, my queen.” “Why not?” “I’d just feel better ab

“Willow,” someone whispers in my ear and wipes hair from my face. Groggy and confused, my heart beats wildly in my chest as I battle to open my eyes. “No, daddy, please, not tonight,” I say. “It’s me,” Kane says in his calm, comforting voice. I manage to drag my eyelids apart and look up at my mate who is trying to hold on to a squirming baby. In an instant, the anxiety lifts, but it takes a while for my heart to slow back down. “I’m sorry,” I mumble. “No need to be sorry,” he says. “Bad dream?” “I don’t know,” I yawn and push myself upright. “Is he hungry?” “Yes, but I’ll try the bottle again.” “Still won’t take it, huh?” “Hm-hm.” “Give him here, it’s fine.” Kane hands Adare over to me, and the baby hungrily goes for my breast. “I think it’s time to start him on solids.” “Not until six months,” I say. “Reading about human babies again?” “It’s not like there’s a parenting manual for werewolf babies.” He laughs and climbs over me to his side of the bed. “We don’t need one,

Kane’s POV I show the vampires to one of the guest apartments a floor down and order Nicholas to clean the place and put fresh linens on the bed. “Don’t feed on my wolves,” I warn the vampires. “If you do, I’ll have to kick you out or execute you.” “I’d like to see you try,” Alhora snarls at me. “We are stronger than you.” I give her a chilly smile. “You have better senses and a few magical abilities,” I say. “But we both know that werewolves, especially Lycans, are better in a fight, and I’m a powerful witch myself. I don’t think killing you will be that hard.” “We shouldn’t fight amongst ourselves,” Zael says calmly, then turns to me. “We won’t feed on your wolves.” “And don’t bring any humans here to slaughter. I don’t want to attract any undue--” “We’re not savages, Kane,” Zael interrupts. “We have donors. We stopped killing for food centuries ago.” “But accidents happen. I can’t have any of that here.” “Of course. My humans will stay on my estate and out of this war.” “Yo

Kane's POV Willow is pale and quiet. She doesn’t talk much, and she refuses to leave Adare's side. I’m seriously reconsidering my original plan to send her to the witches. I locked up my own emotions about it, because she doesn’t need to feel them right now. It will just make everything so much harder for her. Earlier, she tried to do the same, but the moment she picked Adare up and started to nurse him, her walls came crashing down. She is not strong right now, and difficult as it is, I need to stay strong for her until she leaves. She sits on the wingback chair in my private office, her legs folded in under her, quietly watching as I go about the business of setting her up for travel. “Use only cash,” I say. “I know I sound paranoid, but I’m sure they’re tracking our cards and online communication.” “They are,” she says listlessly, but smiles at Adare who is trying to get up on all fours. “He’ll probably walk by the time I’m back.” I turn away from the safe, leaving the bundles

  • Alpha of Alphas - The Lycan's Impossible Mate   Thank you

Dear readers, I would like to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read Willow and Kane's story. This has been one of the longest books I've ever written, and when I started out I did not expect it to turn into this epic saga, but I regret nothing. Nothing I tell you :). I fell in love with Willow and Kane, and I am genuinely sad to say goodbye to these two, but unfortunately all stories must come to an end. Thank you for your support througout this wild ride. It means the world to me. I hope you enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Until we meet again. All my love, Celice

  • Alpha of Alphas - The Lycan's Impossible Mate   Epilogue

Kane Madden, Lycan King of Felan, wakes up to an unearthly racket right outside his bedroom door. Slightly concerned, he glances at his heavily pregnant wife and smiles despite his annoyance at his oldest son’s shenanigans in the hallway. Willow Madden, his mate of fifteen years is heavily pregnant with their second set of twins, two boys this time, and Kane sincerely hopes this is the last time. Goddess knows he loves his children, all eight of them, and he’s sure he’ll love numbers nine and ten just as much, but it’s getting difficult to keep up with all the pups. They are exhausting. For a time, he was sure that they’d never have more children, but after one wild afternoon in the forest, Willow did get pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl, as their remarkable son predicted. She named the twins Josiah and Jocelyn, after the previous occupants of their home. Kane thought it was macabre, but Willow insisted, saying they had to honour their ancestors. That would be the same twins wh

It’s a beautiful summer’s day, and the drive up to the cabin is pleasant enough. Kane and I have found a peaceful kind of comfort in each other’s silence, and we rarely need to fill the quiet with inane background chatter. We are content, just being together. I inhale the lovely fresh air, remembering the first time I came here. The night Suri was born, the sheer exhilaration of feeling my wolf come to life...and that was all thanks to Agatha. Dear, sweet Agatha who never found a final resting place because we went to war and in the chaos, we forgot all about her. Our funeral home has since been bombed off the planet, and we just take care of our dead our own way as we'd done during the war. There aren’t that many of us left anyway. The few surviving wolves live here now, and those that refuse to come to safety are dying off – Templars bearing a lingering grudge either murder them, or the wolves yield to their unrelenting urge to join a good war. Kane once told me that wolves had be

  • Alpha of Alphas - The Lycan's Impossible Mate   Chapter 327

Kane's POV I wasn’t sure what would happen in the months and years that followed after we signed the peace treaty, so we went with the tried and tested 'go with the flow' method. For a time, everything went back to normal. Drake and Patrick ran the business, and more and more my little brother took over my duties in the company. Proof, Willow liked to remind me, that Omegas are just as competent as any other wolf. The overseas wolves went home, and as soon as they were sure the threat had really passed, the European wolves followed suit. The only ones that stayed were the humans. I claimed the human town as part of my territory during the peace talks, and the residents now affectionately call it Wolftonia. Leif left, taking his strange sister with him. Only later did we learn that Silke’s time on earth was limited and that she had foreseen her own death long before she ever came here. Unbeknownst to all of us, including Willow, a völva’s dying energy projects outwards, and what we m

Adare runs around the garden with Roland. The two boys growl and stalk each other like prey. My motherly instinct is to jump up and stop them before one of them gets seriously hurt, but Rosie quickly grabs me and pulls me back to my chair. “No Queen,” she says. “That’s how they learn. They won’t hurt each other.” “Are you sure?” “I’ve seen them play this game a hundred times. I’m sure.” Dammit. My throat burns and I have to fight against the tears. I’m so happy that my son is home, but I’ve missed so much. He is the size of an average three-year-old and when I talk to him, I sometimes forget that he’s not even two yet. I choose not the think about it. I choose to focus on the here and now. My family is whole and complete and that's what matters “Mama! Look!” Adare squeals and tackles Roland to the ground. “Good job, buddy,” Kane says behind me. I look over my shoulder at my mate. “You’re back early.” “Yes. Peace talks broke down.” “Why?” “Clement wants my humans.” “I thought

Kane rolls over to my side and pulls me into his embrace. I don’t even bother to open my eyes. It’s been a wild few days. “Oh Goddess, no,” I complain. “Haven’t you had enough?” He laughs breezily in my ear. “Never…but for now, yes.” He flutters kisses over my jaw and neck. “How do you feel?” “Like I got run over by a penis-shaped bulldozer.” “Hey, you wanted it.” I finally manage to drag my eyelids apart. “I did.” I smile at my impressive mate. “The first two days were great.” “I know.” He rolls away and swings his legs off the bed. “The last day always feels more like a punishment than pleasure.” I turn over onto my side and stare at his broad back, the strong muscles flexing under his skin. “No regrets though, right?” He looks over his shoulder at me. “None.” He gets up and stretches, scratching his ass as he walks to the bathroom. A minute later, I hear him open the tap. We don’t have electricity yet, but I’m not so sure I miss it. Life is kind of peaceful without the cons

  • Alpha of Alphas - The Lycan's Impossible Mate   Chapter 324

Kane’s POV I sit on the couch in the dark living room, watching the glowing embers in the fireplace, trying to ignore the call of Willow’s heat and the fever that's trying to consume me. I'd go to her, but she's still asleep. t’s not time, she can’t feel it yet, but she will in another few hours. I should be sleeping, prepare myself properly this time, but I can’t switch my milling thoughts tumbling through my head off long enough so I can go to sleep. I’ve already sent orders out to bring the power stations back online and ordered our army to stand its ground. There’s nothing else to do now but wait for Clement to come back so we can finish up the peace agreement. In the absence of entertainment or imminent danger, the only thing I have to keep myself occupied is my own thoughts, and all I can think about is the possibility that Willow will get pregnant. Here, in the quiet of the night, all by myself, I have to admit the truth. I never want her to get pregnant again – not becaus

  • Alpha of Alphas - The Lycan's Impossible Mate   Chapter 323

Kane’s POV For the next few hours, we talk about the meeting with Clement, the future, and a whole lot of nothing. There’s something comforting in it, just friends having a chat about life, love, and everything in between. I glance at my watch, surprised to see that it was well past midday. “That’s it,” I say and get up, stretching my too-tight muscles. “We’re taking the week off. I don't know about you, but I've had enough of war to last me a lifetime.” “Shall I collect Adare?” Zael asks on our way out. “Not yet. I don’t…Willow thinks he’ll be safe here, but I want to make sure.” “If what she said about The Goddess is true, she’s probably right. She hasn’t been wrong so far, has she?” I scrunch up my face and rub my forehead. “I don’t know. I can’t think straight anymore.” Zael nods. “I know the feeling.” “Did you get any retaliation over the Raymond thing?” “Of course I did.” “And?” “And nothing. I handled it...it won't come back to you.” “Do you think this war is over?”

  • Alpha of Alphas - The Lycan's Impossible Mate   Chapter 322

Kane's POVIt had been weeks since we slept comfortably, and even though we both sort of hinted at passing the night making love, neither of us could actually gather the energy to do more than snuggle down in each other’s arms. For the first time in weeks, perhaps months, I wake with a smile on my face, completely relaxed and almost happy. The only thing I need to complete my joy is my son, and he'll be here soon enough.I stretch languidly, and slip out from under Willow and go to the bathroom to get ready for my meeting with Clement. I hope against all hope that Willow misunderstood The Goddess and that there would be no human war. I hope, and I pray, that Clement would listen to my advice and stop it before it even starts. The castle is freezing, and I’m shivering so much that I cut myself several times while I shave. Rattling like an excited dog, I run back to the bedroom, pull an extra blanket over Willow, then rush to the closet so I can dress in one of my suits and my long, thi
