Ariadne is counting under her breath. It takes her a long time to calm down, as Alpha Victor drives over to Head Quarters.
“One hundred and eleven, one hundred and twelve…,” Ariadne mutters.
Victor is already over the blood and guts. What he’s fixated on, is how the Omega is doing. This is Ariadne's first kill. It means something. There’s a light that goes out from the eyes at the first kill. Victor only wishes he could turn back the clock and take Omega’s place. The Alpha remembers his first kill, but certainly not his one-hundred-and-twenty-seventh.
“One hundred and twenty-eight,” Ariadne continues.
“I’ll take you home,” Victor suddenly says. Maybe Head Quarters can wait until tomorrow. Ariadne seems too traumatized to meet the rest of the pack. They can wait.
“I don’t have a home,” Ariadne answers, eyes glittering as the street lights pass overhead.
Ariadne’s scent is hitting Victor in waves, simultaneously making him worried, and calming him down. The Alpha has encountered many Omegas in his life. Scientifically, their scent is supposed to pacify aggressive Alphas. So far, Victor has chalked it up to nonsense.
But Ariadne’s scent does exactly what the textbooks say, and more. The mint is damn near overwhelming, and Victor has half a mind to pull the car over, and just hold Aria until she’s alright. So this is what an Omega in distress does to him. It’s fucking potent.
“You live with me now,” Victor says through gritted teeth, “That’s your home.”
“I don’t want to go home,” Ariadne says softly. “I don’t want to go anywhere with you.”
“I can’t just leave you on the street,” Victor frowns, “You’re in danger. You just killed a pack’s Alpha. You need a safety net. That’s why I want you to meet my betas. In case you need a body gu-”
Victor realizes that he’s said too much, revealed too much of himself. Ariadne stares at him with wide, confused eyes. The Alpha is tense under scrutiny. But after a long moment, it passes.
“Okay,” Ariadne grumbles, “I’ll meet your pack, tonight. But I’m tired, so drive fast.”
Victor smiles, some of the more scrappy Ariadne has returned. The Omega recovered fairly quickly, or maybe she’s organized it. The Alpha inwardly scolds himself. It’s not as if Ariadne’s life has been a box of chocolates. The Omega is probably used to trauma.
But that thought makes Victor even more uneasy.
The two of them arrive at the Head Quarters in record time. Ariadne looks unimpressed, as per usual. The Head Quarters entrance isn’t supposed to be impressive anyway. It’s supposed to be covert. It’s nothing but a pair of metal doors on the cement, leading down to a basement.
Ariadne shoots him a questionable look, “You’re not killing me here are you?”
It’s a fair assessment given the scummy street they’re currently standing on.
“I’m not killing you here,” Victor frowns, “That’s so cliche!”
The thought of harming Ariadne in any way makes the Alpha nauseous. He’s also hyper-aware and moderately alarmed of how fond he’s grown off the Omega in the past 24 hours. He’s only known her for 24 hours. This is a problem.
But it can be dealt with later.
Victor pulls open the doors, “After you.”
Suddenly Ariadne chuckles. The sight of an actual smile on his Omega, damn, not his, the Omega, makes Victor flustered.
“To think that Alpha Victor Erichson’s Head Quarters is the basement of some butcher’s shop,” Ariadne says.
That smile could save Victor's trash-covered life. He tries his best not to react.
“T-That’s exactly why,” Victor puffs out his chest.
A voice calls from below, belonging to a face half lit up by blue neon lights, “Boss? Is that you? I thought we had a talk about killing our associates.”
It’s Waylon. He, expectedly, does not sound pleased.
Ariadne and Victor walk down the flight of stairs. Another disembodied voice greets them.
“This is not good for business. Arlo's pack is already out for your blood,” Calvin calls.
Ariadne’s whole body tenses up suddenly. She looks frightened.
“What’s wrong,” Victor pauses on the steps, not pushing the Omega one inch more.
The pale woman shakes her head, “Sorry, it’s nothing.”
“Don’t worry,” Victor gives the Omega an encouraging smile. Ariadne turns her head away, expression panicked. Shee really must not want to be here.
“Let me guess,” Ariadne grumbles, “They’re harmless.”
No, definitely not.
“They won’t hurt you,” Victor says seriously, “They won’t even touch you without permission. They know better.”
Ariadne seems passably reassured as she makes her way to the bottom of the staircase. The Betas are at attention at once. There’s a half-played game of pool on the table, and one stick still set for the strike. Victor is ticked that they’re slacking off, but he’ll discipline them when Ariadne is not there to watch.
“This is my first Beta,” Victor introduces, “Waylon.”
Waylon nods. Victor fills the room with his scent, rubbing his hand against his glands. It’s sending his two Betas into high alert. Everything is as it should be.
“Hello,” Ariadne's eyes are on the floor.
“Where did you find this one?” Waylon exclaims. Alpha Victor can tell the Beta is excited, but he keeps his distance. What Ariadne is, is extremely rare. Waylon is in the business of sales and acquisitions. Victor can see the Beta running numbers in his head already.
“Aria is not for sale,” Victor frowns, “As of now, she’s part of our pack. You-”
“No, I’m not,” Ariadne protests.
The Alpha knew that Ariadne would say something like that.
“You are for now,” Victor nearly snarls, “There are people after you. You want to live, don’t you?”
A shudder runs through Ariadne’s body. She looks frightened. Is she finally realizing how much danger she’s in? Victor considers this. She has always been in danger, being what she is. So why?
“It’s the growling,” Calvin offers, reading Victor’s confusion, “Omegas, they don’t like it.”
Victor makes a mental note not to do it again. Seeing how frightened Ariadne was, made the Alpha’s heart twist.
“Sorry,” Victor says, trying to keep his voice soothing.
Ariadne shrugs noncommittally, her disdainful look returning, “Whatever.”
Victor continues, “This is my second Beta, Calvin.”
After a moment of standing, Waylon extends his hand first, close to Ariadne’s face. The Omega does not want to be initiated. She makes a point of saying so.
“Fuck off.”
“It’s only for now,” Victor says softly, “You need protection. You killed Arlo. You’re in danger.”
“Holy shit,” Calvin gasps, “She killed Arlo? Her?”
“I’ll kill you too, motherf*cker,” Ariadne hisses, “Try me.”
The Beta takes a step back, a submissive whine escapes his mouth.
“Be nice,” Victor sighs, “Come on.”
Ariadne folds her arms, taps her heel in frustration, but ultimately she leans in and sniffs at Waylon's hand. She does the same to Calvin, only quicker. Ariadne stalls on the giveback, biting her lip nervously.
“They won’t hurt you,” Victor says, “I’m waiting.”
Ariadne lifts her hand, and the Beta’s both take a long whiff. Waylon lingers a little too much for Victor’s liking.
“Get back to work,” He barks.
The Betas straighten out and get back to the books. He watches for a moment until he hears paper scratches.
Victor is ready to take Ariadne home when he sees the Omega resetting the pool table.
“You play?” Victor asks. Ariadne doesn’t answer.
His two Betas are pretending to work, a little tense, a little curious. Victor has just added a new pack member. It’s in their DNA to understand the new dynamic. It’s survival. Exactly how high is Ariadne on the food chain?
Victor has placed her at the very top. The Alpha has to. He doesn’t even know why. There’s no way that Victor can discipline Ariadne. Even if she’s being disrespectful. In fact, Victor loves that Ariadne’s disrespectful. It sets his belly aflame.
“Play with me,” Victor smirks.
There’s no response again. More disrespect. Only Ariadne flushes pink at his suggestive words.
“How about this,” the Alpha continues, “If you win, I’ll let you have tomorrow off. If I win, you’ll give me a kiss.”
“Does it have to be on the mouth?” Ariadne frowns.
“No,” Victor laughs, “It can be on my d**k too. I’ll let you decide.”
Ariadne decides. Her blue eyes are alight as she considers her various options. Then she nods, “I could use a day off. You can break. I’ll give you that.”
“Overconfidence is a dangerous slope,” Victor says as he opens the set, sending two striped balls into pockets. He follows up by putting the third ball in, securing his lead.
“You should take your own advice, Alpha,” Ariadne responds.
Alpha?
Victor misses the shot, badly. The man’s body is insanely hot all of the sudden.
Ariadne fits the pool stick in between her fingers. She makes shot after shot. Her eyes dart around the table as if she can see something Victor can't. She jumps balls into arcs, does devil shots into opposite pockets. She’s not only good, but she’s also the best Victor has ever seen.
“I win,” Ariadne says, as the black rolls into the corner pocket.
Victor realizes that he never had a chance.
Ariadne drives them back, hands steady, eyes focused. The Alpha is left wondering exactly what kind of person this Omega is. She’s not like her cast type at all. She’s different, special.“You’re not at all like they say on TV,” Ariadne suddenly voices.Victor's breathing hitches. It’s like they were thinking the same thing about one another at the same time.“I’m exactly like that,” Victor clarifies, “Just not with you.”Ariadne’s driving swerves slightly before she regains control of the car again. “Why not with me?”Well, that is the million-dollar question.“I need a reliable person like you,” Victor says. He’s not sure if that’s a lie or the truth.“A reliable person like me?” Ariadne’s voice quicks upward.“You’re smart.” Victor continues, “Albert Einstein smart.”
Victor lays Ariadne down on the bed, but the Omega is holding on tight, baby koala levels. The Alpha has to pry her fingers off. It’s painful to do so, both physically, and emotionally. Victor wants to stay, curl up in bed with Ariadne. But he can only imagine how the Omega would react upon waking up.“You’d probably try to claw my eyes out,” Victor whispers to the slumbering woman. The peaceful look on Ariadne’s face quickly evaporates. With every step Victor takes away from her, the Omega grows more agitated, a tempered look marring her stunning features.Victor sighs, chest tight. He flips the switch off and proceeds to the guest bedroom. The Alpha takes a quick shower before he fits himself between the sheets. He finds that he isn’t comfortable no matter how he repositions. But he’s so tired that he doesn’t care. Within five minutes, he falls fast asleep. He’s not sure how long
Victor is elated. He is glad that wolves have evolved out of their ears and tails, a hallmark of the past millennia. The Alpha is sure if he had a tail, it’d be wagging really hard right now.“-I want to upgrade. Earn my keep. I can be like a roommate. I’m actually not the worst person to live with,” Ariadne continues. “I can make you a richer man if you pull me off chauffeur duty.”Victor would let Ariadne stay even if she ate all the ice cream and walked around in fuzzy slippers every day. In fact, that would be the ideal situation. If Ariadne wanted to work for him, really work for him, that was another beast.“What exactly can you do?” Victor asks.Ariadne seems surprised at Victor’s response, like the chance given to her is actually precious. “I know what I am and what everyone sees me as. An albino Omega female is a trophy, a fucking w*ore for the highest buyer. I’m not just a hole to
"Someone is stealing from me,” Victor repeats, hands balled into fists. Ariadne looks worried. The Omega takes a step back. Her bright, blue eyes are suddenly filled with alarm, almost banking on fear. Victor bites at the inside of his cheek until he tastes blood. Not here. This is not the place nor the time. Ariadne is still present. Victor must hold back the blackness that’s eating him on the inside. He doesn’t want to frighten Ariadne away.“Let’s go home, yeah,” Victor finally says, taking the stairs through the basement and out the back. Ariadne follows behind, several paces. It’s further than Victor would like, different from their normal dynamic.Once seated in the car, Victor makes a call, explaining the situation to Waylon.“I want you to look over all the ledgers tonight, all of them,” Victor spits into the phone. “Don’t even think about sleeping. You and Calv
Ariadne looks so defeated, pained, conflicted. She scans around the room, agitated and scared.Victor howls again, trying his best to be soothing. Finally, the Omega locks eyes with him. She’s an animal, wild and frightened. Victor stares at her softly, hand still extended, inching forward. With an agonizing cry, Ariadne leans into Victor's hand. She twists her head, showcasing her scent glands. Her eyes are half-closed; her mouth is drawn into a line. This is a submission. It makes Victor's stomach turn. Ariadne doesn’t have to submit to him, she doesn’t have to be afraid of him. Never him.“I’m sorry,” Victor whispers. “It’s okay. Just talk to me.”Ariadne breaks into choked-up cries, moving all the way into Victor's space, burying her nose into Victor's neck. Utter and complete submission. This isn’t like Ariadne at all.The Om
They couldn’t have gone far. Victor can still smell Ariadne. She’s near, maybe just a mile or two away. The Alpha’s mind is racing. He can’t do his usual fanfare, rally the troops, executes a well-planned rescue. He needs Ariadne back right now, at whatever cost. It’s broad daylight. Even in the cloak of darkness, what Victor is about to do, is still extremely forbidden. The Alpha’s body is shivering. His clothes start to itch against his skin. All he can imagine is Ariadne, tied up in the back seat of some car, getting further and further away.Victor uses his last shred of sanity to call Waylon, “Ariadne is been taken. Set up the rooks. I’m going wild.”“Boss, don’t-”Victor ducks into an alley, having barely enough decency to do that. He tears off his clothing, feeling the body tremors course through him. It’s just not done anymore, calling,
Victor suppresses the urge to smile. He’s glad he’s not the only one affected.Seeing Ariadne in a towel, still dripping wet from the shower, hair still soaped up. It isn’t fair. But there’s at least a game now.The Alpha walks over to the private bathroom, fills the tub, and soaks for the better part of an hour. He feels ‘human again’ when he steps out and wraps a robe around himself. He finds Ariadne resting on his bed, instead of occupying the guest room.“Are you feeling okay?” Victor asks.Ariadne is reading, the picture of ease. But she still has rope burns on her wrists and ankles. “I’m fine. Nothing happened. That could have gone much worse.”Victor takes his chances and crawls on the bed, slotting himself next to Ariadne. “You were kidnapped today. They hurt you.”“What?” Ariadne frowns. “I’m not hurt. They didn’t touch me.&rd
“Ariadne?” Victor calls.Ariadne is awake. She’s crumpled in on herself at the edge of the bed. “Victor?”“What’s wrong?” Victor asks, sitting up and hitting the lights.God, the smell, it’s so strong. This can’t be Denning anymore. This is-Victor's hand catches something moist on the sheets near Ariadne's side. It takes a minute for the Alpha to realize what it is. This is-“I don’t feel good, Victor,” Ariadne whines, “I’m so hot. I think I need a doctor.”Victor scrambles over, tossing the comforter away. Ariadne is soaked through in her own slick, knee tucked in, clutching her gut. She’s in heat.“I’m sick,” Ariadne groans, “Call 911. It hurts so bad.”Several things hit Victor at once. Ariadne doesn’t know what’s happening right now because it’s never happened before.
Then the adults are alone, an awkwardness washing over them, carrying with it their history. It goes all quiet, and all that's left is the sound of soldiers marching in the distance, carrying about their morning routines. "I-" Ariadne and Nathan say at the same time before pausing. The Alpha's cheeks go red, and his apple scent spikes high, taking on a sour note. He's nervous, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly. “Y-You go ahead, Ariadne.” Ariadne doesn't even know what to say. It's been approximately one eternity since they've seen each other. "Thanks for taking care of- You brought them here, my babies." "Yea, no- it's cool," Nathan manages. "And thanks for- for not dying. I mean, I'm glad you're alive." Anna slaps Nathan on the shoulder. "What he's trying to say is, it's good to see you." Ariadne laughs, and then she cries. Then she launches herself forward and gives the pair a great big hug. She squeezes them tight, one in each arm. "F*ck," Ariadne says. "I thought I'd
“Are we there yet?” Ariadne asks despite herself. She doesn’t even know where they are, which is saying something. They’d promised to put Victor into one of their best hospitals, but there’s nothing that remotely resembles a hospital. There’s no town, barely a road to drive through. It’s miles of trees on both sides and a dirt road that looks like it might give way at any moment.“Fifteen minutes,” the Commissioner answers, hand steady on the wheel. “Take it easy, dear. We’re almost there.”Easy for him to say. Everyone he loves is alive and well. His son is literally getting a medal.Ariadne’s not sure about Victor. The alive part has been confirmed, yes. But, she doesn’t know who she’ll be seeing in a quarter hour’s time.Is it going to be Victor Erickson, father, and husband, or will it be the Black Wolf, Victor regressed to some other bizarre time frame? She has no idea.No. Ariadne takes a deep breath. She’d talked to Victor on the phone for a few minutes before he had to go. He
It's perfect timing. They're at the control panel that opens up to solitary confinement. Gordon's just through there, safe and tucked away.Felix uses his thumbprint to unlock the door. It's a pressure chamber. The thing hisses as the metal lid unseals from the wall. It's all lead up to this. They step inside and-It's empty."Where-"Gordon's not in the cell. Though it does look like he's been there, the space was modified to be more comfortable. Stolen seats from the guards' lounge, a big screen t.v that's leaning haphazardly against the wall, it's nice. But why isn't he here? He's supposed to be here. It's then that the screen turns on, and a very familiar face appears. It's a man wearing milk glass eyes, smiling wide. Ariadne's confusion turns into fury."I knew you would come, Ariadne. You're a mouse caught in a trap," Gordon speaks. "You want to kill me? You can't even find me. And now you never will."Trap? What trap? The metal door starts moving. It's shutting, pushed in by a
Felix is dressed from head to toe in swat gear. His face is blank, an assault rifle shoved under his armpit. He's hunched over in the locker room, eyes wide. He's not doing anything, long since dressed, shoelaces neatly tied. But he doesn't move. He hasn't moved for five minutes."You okay, kid?" Ariadne asks, tightening the velcro on her Kevlar vest, the fabric stiff under her fingers."I don't know," Felix hums, half a ghost. "My whole world has turned upside down in the last twelve hours."Ariadne has half a mind to slap the Alpha in the face. They have a mission, and if Felix dies, the Commissioner isn't going to be pleased. The older takes a seat on the opposite bench, resting her elbows on her knees. The situation is much too urgent for her to play the dad in a feel-good t.v. Show, as hard as she tries to.“How dramatic,” Ariadne hums."Monday morning," Felix says quietly. "I thought I understood everything. There was order, good guys, bad guys, policemen, and criminals. Now eve
Ariadne doesn’t know how long she’s been asleep for, an ache in her ancient bones, shedding tears over a dream she can’t remember. It’s light out, just barely dawn or dusk, Ariadne’s not sure. Blue casts over them, lines on the wall, setting divisions that aren’t truly there. Victor’s asleep, eyelids fluttering, every breath he takes is a strain, followed by a whistle. It hurts Ariadne to her core. He’s not recovering, that time has long since past. He needs medical attention. F*ck the costs. So what if he’s Victor Erickson, legendary mythos surrounding him, a ruthless and terrible criminal. He’s also a father and the love of Ariadne’s life. Doesn’t he deserve to live too? Hasn’t his life been about doing more good than harm? And one thing can be said for sure, when Victor was on the throne, there was order. “A-Ariadne?” A voice cuts into the night. “Baby?” Ariadne replies, cupping Victor’s face. It’s not Victor though, still asleep, eyes closed in eternal slumber. He forgets
Ariadne sees in shades of red, her wolf blood pulsing hot through her veins. It's hard to focus through the screams and the stampede of people trying to get through the two exits. The smell of fear in the air it's intoxicating and inviting. Ariadne wants to bite, sink her teeth into something, tear through it, and drink the red.Her enemy is in front of her, a great dark, eyeless specter. Gordon seems more like a shadow than a wolf, smoke rising off him, still hot from his transformation. His eyelids are sealed shut, and pink scar lines cut into his flesh. He raises his nose and tastes the air. It doesn't matter that he's blind; Ariadne knows. The man can still see them. He knows exactly where they are.Victor growls from the back of his throat, flashing rows of razor-sharp teeth, drool dribbling down his chin. His eyes are like glowing coals. Ariadne's not sure how much of her mate is in there and how much is the terrible beast he keeps prisoner. The three of them are giants. People
Fuck, this guy is really smart. Victor's glad that Felix isn't higher on the food chain. Sh*t could actually get done. "What do you mean?" Victor asks noncommittally. "You said it yourself that he was, just this morning." Felix flushes, rubbing the back of his head. "Ah, no judgment, but... I was only saying that to impress Sansa. I didn't know you guys were dating. We don't get a lot of Omega security officers here. They're usually reserved for Omega prisons." A pang of worry twists in Victor's stomach. He hopes Ariadne is alright. "Oh," Victor replies, "No, it's alright." Felix smiles, patting him on the shoulder. "So, what do you think about my theory?" "Your theory?" Victor repeats. "That's not Victor Erickson," Felix says again. "If I had to guess, that's Victor's First Beta. He's taking the hit for him." Bingo. "Come on," Victor clicks his teeth. "That's crazy." Felix's eyes widen. "I think I'd know if I was looking at the Black Wolf! I told you, I did my whole dissert
Victor watches himself in the mirror, his skin crawling. His appearance it's out of an alternate universe. He's wearing the cop clown suit. It's tight at the neck, and there's barely any room for his—Someone squeezes his ass, causing him to jump. A soft gasp escapes his lips. It's Ariadne, sneaking behind him, a Cheshire grin on her face."Hey there, sexy," the Omega teases. "Are you gonna arrest me?"Victor's heart drums, cheeks turning pink. Ariadne's alarmingly good-looking in her uniform, blond locks, and pale skin contrasting the dark color of the material. The Alpha turns fully around, taking Ariadne's hands, using his fingers as makeshift handcuffs."I don't think this is the time for roleplaying," Victor chides. "But I promise I'll arrest you later, at least three times."Ariadne laughs, something effortless about the way she stands. It's happier than he's seen the Omega in a long time."I look forward to it," Ariadne answers, pulling him along to the living room so they can
They leave the helicopter on the beach, already half-buried by the sea. Ariadne knows they’re not coming back for it. The thing will probably be a home for the crabs before turning into rust and getting swallowed by the sea.Under the cover of night, the five of them set sail for the mainland. Ariadne watches with one eye open as the sea rocks them. All she’s thinking about is not throwing up. It’s not a calm night, storm clouds pouring on them, lightning lighting up the sky.“Are we there yet?”Victor pulls her close, pressing the Omega’s chest to his head. “Almost, baby.”Ariadne takes in deep, calming breaths, Victor’s coffee scent filling her lungs. It helps, allowing the Omega to focus on something else besides the churning of the sea. Edward plops down beside them with a smile.“Why do you look so happy?” Victor asks. The Silver Omega presses a finger to his lips. “Is a secret.”Ariadne sighs, turning ever so slightly so she can have a better view of the other. “How can you smi
