Samuel POV
Entering the conference room in the Pack house with Jasmine I looked to see my parents had already arrived and were seated at the table. Jasmine’s place was at my right side – whether we were in a meeting or eating a meal, my Luna would always to be to my right. Traditionally my Beta Jason would be to my left but for this meeting, my parents took those seats.
Helping Jasmine into her seat, I take my seat at the head of the table. Sitting for a moment, my mother, Luna Maria, speaks first, “Have you seen Maddie today, Samuel? How is she?”. Surprised my mother hadn’t already been over to see her, I did know she’d been avoiding Drake once she found out Maddie was his mate. She didn’t know the full story yet, but I would be telling them shortly. I found it peculiar that my parents hadn’t asked how this stranger knew he was her mate. They simply had accepted it.
“She’s the same, mother. I am sure she would value a visit from you both. I have to believe she can hear us, and I hope, in time, she will come back to us,” I say with confidence. They can’t give up on her now. None of us can give up on her.
“That’s why I have asked you both to come here this morning. I need to fill you in on what has been happening. And how Drake knew he was her mate,” I say. My parents look at each other like they know something but neither offers any words. Taking that as my cue, I feel Jasmine take my hand and squeeze it. Feeling encouraged by her support, I start.
“You will recall when we almost lost Maddie, she experienced severe pain, and shortly after went into a coma?” I say. My parents both nod, my father taking my mother’s hand. “Well, what we didn’t know is why this may have happened. What caused her to go into a coma with no obvious cause? And how did this stranger know he was Maddie’s mate?” I say as my parents both gasp.
For some reason I feel like they have some of these answers, but I continue. “There is a possibility that Maddie is a twin. When she experienced her break down, her possible twin coincidently died at that exact same time.”. My mother has tears in her eyes now, as my father puts an arm around her shoulder.
Frustrated, I simply ask, “What do you know?”. My father looks at my mother as she lifts her eyes to my father and nods. My father clears his throat as he beings to tell us the story of Maddie.
“Maddie came from a rogue, Samuel. He found us. He told us the story that Maddie was a twin and that he wanted to place the children with good homes. We immediately said we wanted both the girls, but he refused. He said the other twin already had a home and that it was Maddie or nothing,” Alpha Jax says.
Sitting up, my mother says, “You have to understand Jared; I was devastated when I learned I couldn’t have any more pups. We loved you so much. You were more than enough but when this little girl arrived in our lap, we felt it was for a purpose. That the Moon Goddess wanted us to raise her. We quickly accepted, we agreed to the terms the rogue outlined for us and we never saw him again.”.
“What were the terms?” I ask confused as to why they would deal with a rogue. “We had to make sure Maddie was protected at all times. We could never take her off the Pack lands and she was never to have to fight or learn to protect herself as we would always protect her. We had felt that was odd at the time, but we were so desperate to have our little girl, that we did everything he asked. We continue to do what he asked, so we don’t lose our little girl,” my mother adds.
“You entered an agreement with a rogue? Why didn’t you simply kill him father? That would have been the best way to protect Maddie,” I say. “We couldn’t kill him, he told us others were working with him and if they found out that he had died, they would come and take her back. We couldn’t take that risk. We wouldn’t take that risk. We let him go and he has left us alone all these years,” my father says.
“Now she’s an adult. What stops her from doing all the things you promised she wouldn’t do? What if the rogue decides he wants her today? What can we do to protect her?” I ask suddenly aware some random stranger could come and steal my sister away. We may never find her, should that happen.
“That’s why we have instilled in her the sense that she doesn’t need to fight. She doesn’t need to practice self-defence. It’s the only way we could protect her Samuel. It’s why we never let her leave the Pack. When she turned eighteen and didn’t find her mate here, we knew we had to keep her within the confines of the Pack. We couldn’t risk her mate being from another Pack,” my mother says.
Gasping, Jasmine says, “How could you do that to her? She has a right to find her mate! She deserves her mate. Regardless of where he lives. At some point the threat this rogue holds over us must end. Her mate, if he is her mate, is strong and will protect Maddie. We have to trust that the Moon Goddess does not make mistakes.”. I can tell Jasmine is outraged on behalf of Maddie.
We had all enjoyed the love of our mates; we never had to worry about second chance mates or chosen mates. Why would my parents be comfortable denying that same love for my sister? “What was your plan for Maddie? That she would live alone forever?” I ask dismayed thinking of my sister’s bleak future.
“No, we already started talks with another Pack to arrange a chosen mate for Maddie. A mate who would agree to move to our Pack lands. He is a warrior within his Pack. He has seen pictures of Maddie and wants to meet her immediately. Unfortunately, she fell ill before he could meet her. Now look at the mess we are in! She may very well have met her fated mate,” my mother says in distress.
I cannot believe what I am hearing. Both my parents have lost their mind. In all my years growing up I was taught never to negotiate with a rogue. I was raised to be a strong fighter. I could out-fight all my warriors, including my Beta and Gamma when we were sparring. We fought as if we were fighting to the end. Otherwise practicing was a waste of time and effort.
Looking at them both I shake my head. “We won’t stand in the way if this man is her mate. I won’t deny my sister the love of a mate nor will either of you,” I say. My parents start to raise the alarms, “He can’t take her from here, Samuel. This man will need to move here to protect Maddie. We can’t lose her after all these years!” my father explodes.
As I sit there with Jasmine staring at my parents, I realize their fear is very real. Both of them truly believe we will lose Maddie if she leaves. “She has missed out on so much life! How can either of you believe this must continue? What if this rogue is dead? What if he was bluffing all those years ago? What if she should have been learning how to protect herself?” I have so many questions I am throwing at my parents. I am so confused and lost as to how to move forward.
I would need to speak with this Drake man to share what I have learned. If there is any real threat against Maddie, I will do everything within my power to protect her. And if this Drake guy is her mate, he will do the same.
“I want to see this agreement you had with the rogue. I want to know the man’s name. I will have my own investigators see what they can find out about this man and this agreement,” I say. I have a plan and I will put it in motion. Regardless of what this man Drake has to say, I will protect my sister with everything I have.
Jasmine POV
I was devastated for all Maddie had lost growing up. She had a good upbringing and was cherished, as every child should have been. But she had been protected to the point of making her fragile. She couldn’t protect herself against an intruder or a rogue. I cannot imagine how she must have felt all those years being left out when everyone around her was training and preparing to fight threats to the Pack.
I had been trained at a younger age. Not as young as Samuel had started his training. Not that I ever expected to become a Luna. I was a warrior’s daughter and was certainly strong in my own right. I expected to be a warrior as I grew up. I expected to be mated with a warrior. I guess in a way I was. Samuel was the strongest fighter I knew and whenever we were attacked, I stood beside him every time. I knew he feared for me whenever we fought a threat, but he knew I had the skills to fight. I never put myself at risk. I knew how important it was to survive for Samuel and Samuel to survive for me.
“How are you going to tell her?” I ask Alpha Jax and Luna Maria. They both look at me with confused looks on their faces. I repeat, “How are you going to tell her?”. Luna Maria speaks first, “What do you mean, Jasmine? Why would we tell her anything?” she asks. I huff in indignation. “The time for secrets is over. Regardless of if Drake is her mate or not, she needs to know her history. She needs to know she may have had and lost a twin. She needs to know why you protected her so vehemently over the years. She needs to know the potential reality that her father was a rogue and there is no information on her mother,” I concluded.
The look at me with disgust on their faces. “We will never tell Maddie her father may have been rogue and I forbid either of you to tell her,” Alpha Jax says trying to use his Alpha command on us. As we both outrank him, he cannot command us as he must have forgotten. “Father, that doesn’t work on us and yes Maddie will be advised of her history,” Samuel says supporting me against his parents.
His mother now has tears streaming down her face. “Don’t ruin her confidence, Samuel. It will destroy her to know she was adopted,” his mother says. “It will destroy her to know she’s been lied to all these years. I had no problem not telling her she was adopted when I believed, as you had told me, that her parents had died, and she was an orphaned pup needing a good home. I loved her from the day we got her, and I love her today, regardless of her past. You both need to accept that she is a young woman who has lived a sheltered life. It’s time for her to understand exactly what happened and how we are going to protect her,” Samuel says.
Taking my hand, Samuel pulls me up into his arms. “We are going over to see Maddie. I suggest you both take some time to consider visiting her. The longer you stay away, the longer she will know something is wrong. I believe she can hear us and not hearing from you will devastate her,” Samuel says as he takes me out of the room. We are on our way back to visit Drake.
Kate POV I was still reeling from the shock of the DNA results a couple days later. I was toying with the idea of going to the Silver Crescent Pack. Colby was against the idea. “Why don’t you let this go, Kate? The results came back negative. It’s time to put this to rest,” he says with a touch of frustration. “I can’t let this go. There is a reason someone doesn’t want us to find out the truth and I need to understand why,” I reply. Colby and I had been on opposite sides of the fence on this topic. The Golden Moon Pack had seen an increase in rogue attacks recently. It didn’t sit well with me that there was a sense of weakness in our Pack that enticed
Kate POV As I step onto the Golden Moon Pack territory, I take a deep breath of fresh air. I love the Silver Crescent Pack, but the Golden Moon Pack will always be my home. That sense of coming home, feeling like there is someplace you belong always captivates me when I step on the territory soil. Nodding to the border patrol as I cross the border, I drive on through our community. I see children stop to wave, some of their parents stopping to bare their neck as a sign of respect. No matter how many times I left, I still had the respect of my Pack whenever I returned and for that I was eternally grateful. I wished Colby could have come with me. I knew it was too much to expect both of us could just up and leave every time we wanted to.
Alpha Samuel I sigh as Kate raises the point that Maddie may be a twin to this Louise woman and in turn, Kate’s stepsister. “Kate, we have been over this. The DNA is indicating you are not a match to one another,” I remind her. “I understand that Samuel, but this is the only thing we have as commonalities,” she reminds me. I agree, it is the only thing that is common aside from our alliances with four other Packs. There are six Packs in our alliance, well a seventh, when you add in Jared Montgomery’s Pack – the Black Shadow Pack and newest addition. Jared is Lily’s mate; Lily is Kate’s best friend. “I would suggest we need to reach out to the other Packs to determine if they have seen any rogue activity,” I suggest to Kate. I
Samuel POV Having spoken with every other Pack that I had committed to calling, I learned that nobody had any interactions with rogues over the past couple weeks. This frustrated me and I could only hope Alpha Kate would hear from some of the Packs on her call list that they had encountered rogues over the past couple weeks. I could not wrap my head around the common denominator for the two Packs being the twins. Sighing I decided it was time to go visit my Luna. Jasmine had been sitting with Maddie for a few hours now and I had promised to get her for supper. Closing up my office and locking the door behind me, I see my Beta, Luke, walking in from a training session. “How did things go?” I ask. “Our warriors are ready,” Luke says before continuing, “they will do whatever they can to protect the Pack,” he promises. Nodding I am pleased. Our warriors are among the top in our region, and I am confident they will continu
Kate POV As I pull my SUV into the parking lot of the Red Moon Pack, I can see Alpha Samuel and Luna Jasmine standing at the top of the Pack house stairs. I had only given Alpha Samuel a couple hours’ notice and he was not pleased. I did not want to continue trying to communicate by phone. We had much to discuss, and I wanted to get some plans in action. And I wanted to see Maddie. I felt a connection to her. Maybe it was because we had lost Louise and I still carried some guilt at not fully making the effort with her. She had tried to cause so much harm, but in retrospect she was lost. Who knows what the outcome would have been had I made more of an effort? I can’t change the past, but I can change the future. And I would change it with Maddie. Stepping out of my SUV, I
Jasmine POV “You mean, the rogue who gave Maddie to Alpha Jax and Luna Maria could be dead?” I ask excitedly. “Samuel, do you realize what this means?” I ask Samuel. He shakes his head; not clear the direction I am heading. “This Louise could be the other twin your parents mentioned; the threat against Maddie could be dead,” she says with enthusiasm. Samuel cringes as I realize he hadn’t mentioned the other twin. I look at him regretfully, but he squeezed my hand assuring me it was fine. “Other twin?” Drake asks coldly. Yep, they caught that piece of information, of course. Samuel interjects, “My parents had learned there was a second baby; they wanted to take both of the girls, but the rogue wouldn’t have it. He said she was already placed with another family and if my parents didn
Drake POV “As you heard, my name is Drake; Drake Chisholm,” I start. “I am an Alpha from the Blue Moon Pack. I am not the head Alpha but support to the Alpha,” I try to explain. “The head Alpha is my brother,” I explain. Recognizing now, she nods her understanding. “How are you here?” she asks. “Well, that gets a little complicated,” I say. “I am not sure we need to get into that right now,” I say as I see her disappointment. “Why do I feel tingling when you touch me?” she asks. “Now that I can answer,” I say with a smile. “Do you know anything about mates, Maddie?” I ask. I love how her name rolls off my tongue. “I know Samuel and Jasmine are mates; my parents are mates,” she replies. “Yes, that
Kate POV I was training this morning with Alpha Reid and Beta John. I had always trained with them before I left the Golden Moon Pack and I liked jumping back into it when I was home. They never went easy on me and pushed me beyond my limits. And I pushed them beyond theirs. Often, they would spar with me with two of them fighting me at the same time. And on days when I really needed to be challenged, we brought in our top warrior as well. The reality was when we were being attacked, it would not be uncommon to stumble across the odd rogue on our territory and we all needed to be able to protect ourselves as best we could until help arrived. Rogues didn’t fight with any sort of ethics; if there was a gang of them, you can assume the gang would attack at the same time.
Kate POV We got the call two days later that Lily was in labour. Colby had been trying to convince me not to go. Lily would understand that he wanted me close to the Pack house and doctor. We both were anxious after our last loss, but we had to recognize that was a situation that happened to us. Not something that meant there was something wrong with the pup or me in terms of carrying our pups. Amelie was over the moon when she found out we were expecting. To find out we were having two pups was a surprise but a great one at that. Amelie asked repeatedly if she could name them. Considering the last stuffed animal she received, she named gremlin, we are trying to gently tell her no. But it made us chuckle last night as we considered the names she would come up with. We haven’t started thinking about names yet. We don’t know if it’s two boys, two girls or one of each. And we haven’t decided if we want to know what they are before they are born.
Kate POV It had been a couple months since everything had happened. From the DNA test results, to Caleb’s son being the mastermind behind all that had happened. Maddie and I had a chance to grow closer over the past couple months. Beta Ralph had been disappointed he had not ended up being Maddie’s father. Unlike my father who had begrudgingly made an effort to speak with her a couple times. Maddie was not interested in him as a father figure and that suited my father as well. Although he was a little surprised, she was so independent. I was proud of her. She has continued with her therapy and had healed physically from her injuries. Alpha Samuel has been able to shift. He still struggles with his leg but the chance to shift has really helped with his outlook on life. And from what I understand it helped Jasmine and his relationship. Samuel did banish his father when they returned to their Pack; however, another Pack accepted his mother and father
Maddie POV Grabbing Drake’s arm, “There has to be another way,” I murmur to Drake suddenly terrified of the ramifications if he does not win. Not that I would be the property of this rogue, but that I would lose my mate. I cannot live without Drake. We just started our lives together. And what the hell was the purpose? “What the hell is the point of all this?” I say to the man standing in front of us smirking. “The point is, Maddie dearest, that I get the final revenge on a group of wolves who have done nothing but look down on my family,” he says coldly. “Who are you?” Kate asks taking a step closer. Colby grabs her arm, holding her where she was. Turning to look at Kate, he takes a step forward. Everyone tensed up as he continued to stare at Kate. “You don’t recognize me, Alpha Kate?” he says smugly. “You look familiar, but it cannot be,” she says. “Why can’t it be? Did you think they would to be loyal to one another after everyt
Kate POV “It is you, isn’t it?” I ask Troy. “Who?” Maddie asks me. “He’s the mystery man working with Dr. Langille,” I conclude. “No, I am not, but I am the man working for him,” Troy replies coldly. “What the hell are you talking about?” Alpha Jax asks Troy. Troy looks at him condescendingly, “You stupid, old man. Who in their right mind tries to interfere with a mated couple? I will say you provided the avenue for us into your life and in turn Maddie’s life,” he says. “You aren’t in Maddie’s life; I don’t know who the hell you are, nor do I care, but you won’t be leaving here,” Drake says. I can tell he is mind-linking his warriors to come remove Troy. I want more answers before that happens. “Who do you work for?” I ask Troy. He laughs, “I work for a powerful man. One who wants Maddie and in turn will take Red Moon Pack,” he concludes. “Like hell they will,” we all turn shocked to see Samuel walking in the door with Jasmine at his
Maddie POV It had been an amazing vacation with Drake. I cannot wait to go again. I loved all his surprises and most importantly our time together. I had heard from Kate. She and Colby were arriving shortly for a quick visit. They were stopping to see her parents first at the Golden Moon Pack, Kate had some paperwork to sign for Alpha Reid and then would be coming over here. She had some information on who she believes is the man who Dr. Langille referred to, but she did not want to discuss it on the phone. Drake had just received a mind-link that our guests were here. I was surprised it was so quick as we had just spoke with Kate that she was on her way, and we were about an hour from the Golden Moon Pack. Drake and I went out to the entrance to await their arrival. We saw a lone car coming up the street, which was odd. Kate and Colby always travelled with additional warriors given the size of Colby’s Pack and the link to the Golden Moon Pack.
Kate POV Getting Amelie ready for bed had been a chore. She had found out we were at her school visiting her teacher and wanted to know why. Obviously, we did not tell her the reason. We simply told her it was a check-in to see how Amelie was doing and that we found out her teacher was moving to a new Pack. Yes, on the drive home Colby had made the decision to relocate Ms. Cooper. He would not make her rogue, but he would find a Pack within his network that would be better suited for her. And no, she would not be teaching school children. He had already arranged to meet with Ms. Cooper first thing tomorrow morning to advise her of the change. This satisfied Amelie and we spent an hour reading before she fell asleep. I sat there just holding her while she had drifted off to sleep. I could not wait to give her a younger sibling. I knew we weren’t her birth parents, but she felt like my own and I would always treat her like she was mine regardless of ho
Maddie POV We had arrived at the beach late yesterday. We got here in time to watch an amazing sunset. I could see why the beach was so captivating for Drake. The smell of the ocean breeze was incredible, and I was amazed that it was what he smelled when he first scented me as his mate. I sat between Drake’s legs, his arms wrapped around my waist as we just sat and listened to the waves as they rolled up the shore. Drake had rented us a cottage that was secluded from other vacationers. He had been here years before and wanted to show me. He also teased me that he had lots of activities planned that required privacy. I didn’t care. This was the most amazing surprise I have experienced. I was willing to try everything he wanted to do. No matter how much it pushed me out of my comfort zone. My mate was amazing. He had been incredibly supportive while I continued to heal. I could not have asked for more from him. We walked up the beach a
Samuel POV “You may never shift again,” the specialist had told me months ago. I had been hearing this phrase over and over on a permanent loop in my mind. I could not focus on anything else. I could not imagine how effective I could be as an Alpha for my Pack without the ability to shift. I was so angry at everyone and taking most of my anger and frustration out on Jasmine. My heart sank as I knew I had treated my mate horribly yet again. I was getting to a point where I could no longer apologize for my behaviour, and I could not stand myself. I had my appointment today with my specialist. I was going to find out if the exercises and all the extra work had paid off or if I was destined to be an Alpha with a wolf who could not shift. Or if I would get the chance to try, once again, to shift. I did not know if Jasmine would come with me to today’s appointment. I had been particularly nasty this morning and I knew through our bond she was still very hu
Maddie I could not believe it. Kate and I were finally confirmed as being siblings. When we had told Alpha Jackson and Beta Ralph the results, I felt a little sorry for Beta Ralph. I think a part of him had hoped I would be his daughter. It was clear that the previous DNA results had been tampered with and we had no reason to doubt these results. Kate was still searching for the identity of who the “he” was who tampered with the previous results. She was concerned he could still be a threat. She was also going after Dr. Langille for misconduct. I was sorry that I had not known my birth siblings better. Or experienced them in a better light. Had we had the opportunity to grow up together, things would have been so much different and hopefully better. But at least I have one sibling I can get to know and grow older with. Drake was still working with the rogues. The Pack he had thought might take them had refused most of the members. Th
