Taelin-

“I can’t believe you Taelin! Do you know what you will be throwing away if you leave? You and Theo are perfect for each other. You could become Luna! He loves you and is willing to make you, his Luna.” My mother yelled at me, as I continued to pack my bags.

I was now sixteen, able to apply to join the royal guard. My mother was against the idea because she wanted me to become the Luna of the pack. Since the parasite was wiping out our kind, it has made it impossible for us to find our fated mates. We were supposed to find our chosen mates.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like Alpha Theo, he was a very handsome guy. He was a kind Alpha and more than capable of leading our pack. When Theo was barely thirteen, he became the Alpha of our pack, after his father was taken over by this unknown parasite.

We still didn’t know what was causing our kind to become ill, turning us into mindless Rogues. It started when I was ten and has been slowly making its way around. We aren’t even sure how it spreads, but so far, we have managed to keep it out of our territory.

Other than Theo’s father, no one else has contracted the parasite in the pack. Because of that, Theo had to kill his father or risk his father rampaging through the pack and killing all of us. Since then, we built a wall surrounding our territory, so we didn’t risk further exposure.

Now with Theo as Alpha, he was much different from the way he used to be. He was still the same kind of boy I knew growing up, but he wasn’t at the same time. It was like the weight of the world now rested on his shoulders.

Theo and I had been dating for a year before the incident with his father. Since he was the youngest werewolf to become Alpha, a lot of responsibilities fell on him. Technically, we were still dating, but I didn’t love him the way he loved me. I just felt like I was meant for more in my life.

It wasn’t as if I were guaranteed a place in the Alpha King’s warriors, I was aware that I could instantly be denied. The Alpha King didn’t have female warriors, but I was determined to try. For years I trained hard and tried to become the best in my class.

“I know what I will be giving up if I don’t leave.” I told my mother, not even bothering to look at her.

“Why must you leave and put yourself at risk like this? You are safe here. We haven’t had anyone affected in three years.” My mother said, moving to remove my clothing out of my suitcase.

“Stop!” I told her, pulling my suitcase out of her reach. “Look at me.”

When she looked at me, her eyes were red and swollen from the tears she had been crying. I loved my mother, which made this hard enough for me as it was. Seeing her cry though, made my heartache.

“It has never been a secret that I wanted to do this. Theo supports my decision and has agreed to let me go. He has even said he will wait for me regardless of whether I become a warrior or not. I need to do this. With everything going on, I want to do something that will make a difference.” I told my mother, taking her hands in mine.

“You can make a difference here.” My mother cried.

“You know I can’t. What can I do behind these walls? At least if I become a member of the Royal Guard, I can do my part to fight this parasite and find a way to make it safe for all of us again. They are even trying to find a cure. I want to help more than I do. By leaving, I can find a way to keep everyone here safe.” I told her, reaching up to wipe away a tear that fell down her cheek.

“You are too much like your father. How can you ask me to be okay with this after losing him for doing the same thing?” My mother asked through her sobs.

Four years ago, my father had left to enlist in the Royal Guard, he had been the best. He was the Beta of the pack and a well-known warrior amongst our kind. He was also the reason I was so well trained.

A little over a year ago, we received word that he was killed in action. My mother had thought that it would have been enough to convince me to turn down my dream of following in his footsteps. It never did, just made me more determined to train more until I became the best.

The only thing it did was, it kept me from bringing up my plans to my mother. Every time I did, it seemed as if I was only hurting her. I was fairly sure that she thought I gave up the idea, which I allowed her to believe. She seemed less broken after losing her mate if I didn’t bring it up.

“I promise I will be careful and will do everything I can to make it back safely, but I must do this mom. I need to do this.” I told her, keeping my voice firm, yet gentle.

Instead of responding, she fell into my arms and started crying. I held her, letting her cry for as long as she needed. It broke my heart, but I wasn’t about to turn back on the thing I believed I was meant to do. I just hoped that one day, she would forgive me.

My mother continued to cry, for what felt like hours, but I still just held on to her. I wished I could do more for her, to comfort her and convince her not to be upset with me. When she fell asleep in my arms, I gently laid her down on my bed and covered her up.

Theo was waiting outside for me, ready to take me to the airport. I didn’t want to wake my mother up, but I didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye. Quietly, I finished packing up the rest of my stuff.

Going to my desk, I pulled out a piece of paper and pen. Sitting down, I began to write my mother a note. I knew she was going to be upset with me, but I didn’t know what else to do. She couldn’t keep me from leaving, but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t make me feel guilty for doing it.

“To my dearest mother,

I am sorry that I couldn’t be the daughter you wanted me to be. As much as you hate it, it is true, I do take after my father. It breaks my heart that you can’t support me in my decision, but this is something I need to do.

When my father left, you told him that you would always support him in his decisions, as well as be here to pray to the Moon Goddess for his safe return. I know you are upset with me, but I hope you will find a way to do the same for me.

I love you more than there are stars in the sky. As long as the Goddess is looking over me, I will come home to you. Remember, I am not alone. Samantha is with me, and she is very strong. You know just as well as I do, my wolf will not let anything happen to me.

Love always, Taelin.”

“Sign my name too.” My wolf voice filled my head.

Doing as she asked, I folded the paper up and then placed it under my mother’s hand which lay flat on my bed. With one last look at my mother and around my room, I picked up my suitcase and made my way out of the house. I was careful not to make a sound.

“About time. For a minute I thought you had changed your mind. Not that I would have minded.” I heard Theo say before I shut the front door to the house.

“Shh!” I said, quickly shutting the door, and then listening for any sign of movement.

When I heard nothing, I let out my breath. Turning towards Theo, I noticed he was dressed in a nice button-up white shirt and black slacks. It was much different than his usual attire, but it suited him. There was a part of me that wished I could love him in the way he loved me, but I wasn’t sure if I ever would.

It wasn’t that he didn’t know how I felt, but it didn’t bother him. Even if I didn’t love him the way he loved me, I was still going to choose him as my mate. First, I just needed to chase my dreams. He understood that, which made me think that one day I could fall in love with him.

“I guess that answers my next question.” Theo said, keeping his voice just above a whisper.

“Let’s just get out of here, okay?” I asked, picking up my suitcase from the porch and heading to his truck.

Theo raced over to me and took my suitcase from my hand, then placed it in the back of his truck. Once we were both in the truck, we didn’t say anything else until we reached the airport. After leaving my mother as I did, I felt physically ill.

“Before you go, I want to give you something.” I heard Theo say, as soon as he put his truck in park.

“I thought we both agreed we weren’t going to make a big deal of this?” I asked, turning in my seat to face him.

“You said, I didn’t agree to anything.” Theo said.

“Theo, I…” I began but Theo interrupted me.

“Before you say anything, just hear me out. I know we have talked about this already, but I wanted you to know I am serious. I will wait for you until you return. There isn’t a doubt in my head that you will return to us and when you do, I fully plan to make you mine. I know you don’t feel the same way about me that I do, but I know that someday you will. Once we are mated, things will be different. We have been together for a few years. Things aren’t the same as they used to be now that we will probably never find our fated mate. You know I never believed in the whole fated thing though. So, I wanted to give you this.” Theo said, then pulled a small black box from his pocket.

Before I could even ask what it was, he opened it up. Inside the box was a beautiful diamond ring. My hand flew to my mouth, and I felt as if I were going to cry. Not because of what he was giving me, but because I wished I could give him what he wanted.

“With this ring, I want it to be a promise that I will wait for you until you return to me. I want it to be a reminder to come home safely and to remember that you are loved and missed.” Theo said, taking the ring out of the box and slipping it on my finger.

“Thank you.” I told him, unable to think of anything else to say.

It was a beautiful ring. Even if I didn’t have the same feelings for him, I still intended to return here and become his mate. We have both talked about it. He didn’t believe in the fated mate, while I just didn’t believe I would ever find mine. Whatever was killing off our kind, I was almost positive that whoever my fated mate was, was either dead or will be before I found him.

After I accepted the ring, Theo pulled me into a hug and kissed me passionately on the mouth. He pulled away before I could respond, but I was glad because I wasn’t sure how to respond now. Getting out of the truck, I turned around to wave at him, before grabbing my suitcase.

With the suitcase in hand, I walked into the airport. I tried to push away the thoughts of Theo, my mother, my father, and everything else. I was getting ready to embark on a journey that I have been working on my entire life. First thing was first though, I had to prove that I was capable of joining the Royal Guard.

Taelin- This was it. The day I have been waiting for, for two years. When I first came here to become a warrior in the Royal Guard, I thought that if they accepted me, I would be able to start right away. Then I found out I had to go through two years of vigorous training and skill tests to even qualify. Today was the day I would find out if I were good enough to join. At first, I had been the laughingstock of everyone. Twenty other highly trained werewolves had also arrived the same day as me, except only two of us were female. I had figured I would be the only female since there had been no other she-wolves that have been in the Royal Guard. After training for the last two years, and getting tested for skills and endurance, now I know why. The training course was tough, and I am honestly surprised I had made it this far. The other female that had applied, had been sent home after the first three months. Not because she was unable to keep up, but because it had been too hard for h

Taelin- “The last name I am about to call, I want you all to know, that I have watched this one very closely. I am not choosing them because of who their family is, but because they were the best in the class. This person trained harder than everyone and I think will one day become even better than me. Despite all the factors against them, they have achieved something I haven’t seen in many years.” The Alpha spoke. The way he was dragging this out made my head hurt. The fact that he mentioned a family connection just proves that he is about to call out Seth’s name. I think the Alpha King may be full of shit though. I admit Seth is good, but he is also lazy when it comes to training. “I didn’t think my uncle saw me like that.” I heard Seth whisper, sounding just a bit smug. “Taelin Reyes.” The Alpha spoke. This has to be a dream. There is no way I just heard what I heard. It was my name the Alpha King called, yet I couldn’t bring my feet to move. I just stared at him with wide eyes

Taelin- Arriving at the wall that surrounded my pack, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue. There was something eerie about the atmosphere that seemed to leak out past the walls. Standing just outside the gate, I got this sickening feeling when no one came out to see who had arrived. Typically, one of the pack warriors, depending on who was on rotation at the time, would open the peek hole to see who was outside. Nothing happened though. When I looked up to the top of the wall, I didn’t see anyone walking around either. The way the wall was built allowed others to walk on the metal platform that was just inside the border. I kept watching, hoping that I would see someone. I have even gone as far as calling out to alert them of my arrival. “Mom?” I attempted to link with my mother, but I got no response. “Theo?” I attempted, but still no response. Why wasn’t anyone answering? Something was wrong, but I didn’t know what. The only way I was going to know, is if I entered the territ

Ryker- When was this going to end? For years we have been dealing with this threat and haven’t gotten anywhere. Although I had no one to blame except for myself. When the breakout first happened, I had been tasked with finding a cure. Or rather my pack was. We weren’t an exceptionally large pack, in fact, we were potentially the smallest pack in the world, consisting of only twelve members. We used to be a lot larger, but this parasite has taken out the rest. Just because we were small though, didn’t mean we weren’t one of the best. Every member of my pack has been trained to fight off those that have been infected. We were also the ones that could find a cure. At least at one point, I thought we were, but now I wasn’t so sure. When the breakout first happened, my pack had been one of the first ones hit. The ones that remained are immune to the parasite. Everyone, including me, has been infected, but we were able to overcome it. When the Alpha King learned of this, he sent over on

Taelin- One look at the man standing before me and I was wanting to scream Mate. Samantha was already screaming it in my head. Just when I had been ready to accept a chosen mate, I was now standing before my fated mate. “What is your name?” The male asked, coming toward me like a predator. “Taelin. Would you be so kind as to give me your name?” I asked, trying to contain my excitement. “Ryker. Why did you come here? If protection is what you are seeking, I can offer it. However, you will be expected to carry your own weight and help where needed. I also need to know if you have been infected.” Why was it that even his name made me buzz with excitement? When he continued talking, I just became annoyed though. Why was it that all men think I just needed protection? The ones needing protection were them. Mate or not, my spine stiffened at his comment. I have read the file on this pack. They were small but tasked with finding the cure. They were all very skilled fighters as well, whi

Ryker-I had to admit, she had a fire in her that was a bit refreshing. Not saying that all my pack members didn’t have a fire in them, but hers was different. It was like she always had to have her back up.She was getting under my skin, and I didn’t like it. I wasn’t against female fighters, since we had a female member in the pack that could wipe the floor with the men. My problem was that I felt like she was going to be a distraction, which none of us could afford. The way she responded to my Beta though, now that had been impressive. When he had commented on her looks, I had been ready to lay into him. Not that I knew why, I barely met the girl, and my loyalty was to my members.“Hey! My name is Sara, I can show you where you will be staying. Don’t mind the men, they are just stunned with how beautiful you are.”Just as I expected, my Gamma jumped in and was already trying to be besties with the girl. It didn’t surprise me considering she has been complaining about being the only

Taelin-I was a little disappointed that I hadn’t been able to settle in before I was already called down to get to work. Not that I really minded, considering I needed to get used to being here. Sara was great, but the guys here were already on my last nerve. It wasn’t like I shouldn’t have expected it to happen. Very few males couldn’t care whether I was a female or not. In a way, I had hoped that once I finished my training, people would be more welcoming to me.What makes me being a female any different? I went through the same training everyone else did to get the position I now held. I guess there wasn’t much I could do about it, other than do what I have always done. Prove I belonged.Gathering up the last of my gear, I made sure my thigh halter was properly secure. I might have the benefit of shifting into a wolf, but we were trained to fight in our human form. Since I didn’t know the area, I wasn’t going to shift to defend myself.Taking one last look in the floor-to-ceiling

I wasn’t sure what bothered me more. Taelin-“What are you thinking about?” Ryker whispered in my ear as he wrapped his arms around me from behind, while I looked over the balcony from our room. From this view, I could look over the town where the Palace resided. There wasn’t much, other than a few houses where the staff of the palace lived. Everyone that lived inside the Palace were warriors and those training to become warriors.I never thought much about the life that everyone that lived here had until I came here, not as a sixteen-year-old girl training to join the Royal Guard, but as the current Alpha King. It was still weird that I was referred to as an Alpha King. I was the first female to take on the role as Alpha, but I felt like the title should remain as it has always been.Placing my hands on his arms, which were embracing my shoulders, I leaned against his broad chest. “I was just thinking back to when I first came here. I still can’t believe that it has been more than five years since I showed up here with

Taelin-When the start of the battle commenced again, I took a deep breath. I might have lied about my lung, but I wasn’t entirely sure. All I knew was I was still capable of fighting, even if I felt like all the air inside of me was being sucked out and my lungs felt like they were on fire. What I told Ryker was true, however, I wasn’t going to last another ten minutes. I either needed to end this now or let him take me out. I had been playing it safe as much as possible. His movements were fast and just one hit from him was enough to knock me on my ass.Running around and dodging him wasn’t doing me any good because every breath I took was painful. The more I tried to get away from him, the more likely I would get injured. Regardless of if I was working with less lung capacity or if I was just winded, I knew it would be a matter of time before I passed out from the exertion.I had felt that the Beta had tried to speak to me telepathically, but I still had my mind blocked from anyone

Ryker-I had been watching the timer and neither had moved for seven minutes. Taelin looked regal in her stance, like she was completely in her element. The Beta had seemed unwavering, until just moments before he made the first move.At first, I thought something was wrong because they both stood out on the field without moving for a long time. The second the Beta made the first move, I held my breath and waited to see what would happen. It wasn’t that I didn’t support my mate in this, but the fear was still there.“About time.” I heard someone say sarcastically from behind me.Without looking, I felt Ryan turn around, more than likely to make a comment to whoever spoke. Reaching my hand out, I placed it on his arm firmly. This was Taelin’s fight and there was no point in anyone trying to talk others out of what they were feeling.“Don’t. Words won’t do any good. Taelin-I thought I was ready for this, but now that I was standing in the middle of the arena, surrounded by onlookers, I suddenly became nervous. The Beta of all the werewolves still wasn’t here, but I had arrived a little early. After watching the last video of the Beta’s fighting skills, I quickly got ready.I figured if I arrived before anyone else, I would have a chance to get a little time to meditate. Upon arriving though, I saw many others had already arrived. The crowd was a lot larger than I expected it to be.Frank informed me that many people that had been relocated here from safe houses wanted to see if I was capable of becoming the next Alpha. Ryker was standing next to me, wanting to show his support as we waited. The whispers of the crowd were loud, making me wonder if it was done on purpose.“There is no way she can defeat our Beta. She is just a girl. Look at her, she is tiny.” A male voice from the crowd said, his voice a little over a whisper.“She is cute though.

Today was the day Taelin would be facing the Beta in the arena, but there were still hours before it was scheduled. For the past three days, I have helped him fast-track distribution. We were almost done, but we needed a little more of Taelin’s blood. Since she was getting ready to fight, I wouldn’t allow Leo to take anymore until after. I am sure that if she knew we needed it, she wouldn’t hesitate, which is why I told him to stay away from her.The last thing I wanted was for her to ask how things were going and for him to end up telling her.
