CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR

ROXANNE

The evening air was cool but the tension between us was far from it. My heart raced as I tried to process the intense emotions swirling inside me. Ryker had a way of making me feel exhilarated and terrified at the same time.

I didn't know if I could trust his words. This was Ryker being expressive and I was trying not to be nonchalant but I couldn't help it.

I looked up at him, my resolve weakening under his earnest gaze. “I just don’t want to be someone you run to when things don’t go your way.”

He reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair from my face. “You’re not. You’re someone I want to be with because you make me feel whole. You make me forget about the pressure and the uncertainty.”

I sighed. “I don't want to get hurt, Ryker. Make up your mind, okay?”

He let out a low sigh. “I know what I want Roxanne, I'm not confused.”

Yes, I was scared, I was too scared of falling deep– perhaps I had. But I was scared of being really into him and his mate appea

CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVEROXANNE Sunlight filtered through the thin curtains of my bedroom, casting soft, golden rays across the room. The light danced on the wooden floor, creating patterns that shifted with the breeze. It was as if the sun itself was gently coaxing me awake, wrapping me in its tender embrace.Birds were chirping outside, their songs filling the air with a happy melody. The rustling leaves outside my window added a soothing sound, like a gentle lullaby. The air was cool and fresh, carrying the scent of earth and flowers. It flowed through the cracked window, making the curtains move softly. I shivered slightly under the thin covers, feeling the breeze on my skin.I lay there for a moment, soaking in the peacefulness of the morning. Everything felt more vivid, more alive.Turning my head, I looked out the window. The light framed the edges like a halo. A bird landed on the windowsill, its feathers ruffled by the breeze. It chirped once, tilting its head as if to greet me b

CHAPTER FIFTY SIXROXANNE Everything came back to me in a rush. The searing pain of the burner against my skin, the piercing agony of the arrows. Tears slipped out of my eyes as the memories flooded my mind. The voices, so cruel and taunting, belonged to people I didn't know. I was attacked for reasons that were still a mystery to me.Gentle fingers caressed my face, brushing my tears away. My eyelids fluttered open slowly, and I found myself gazing up at Ryker. Worry etched deep lines in his handsome face."Hi," he whispered, his voice soft and soothing."Hi," I croaked back, my throat dry and scratchy."How are you feeling?" he asked, his eyes never leaving mine.I tried to sit up, but my body felt heavy and weak. "Confused," I admitted. "I remembered something... something awful.”Ryker nodded, his hand gently stroking my cheek. "Kara told me you fainted during archery practice. Do you want to talk about what you remembered?”I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart.

CHAPTER FIFTY SEVENKARAI was in the garden peacefully picking flowers for my bedroom since the one I had before had withered, when two of the Alpha’s guards approached me. “Kara,” one of them said, his tone stern, “the Alpha needs you in his office.”Surprised, I glanced up at them. The Alpha rarely summoned me. “I'll be there in a minute,” I said, trying to steady my voice. But before I could move, they grabbed me roughly by my arms and began to haul me away. It felt like déjà vu— like the last time I was dragged by the guards, accused of a crime I didn't commit. As we reached the Alpha’s office, my heart pounded so loud I was scared it would burst right out of my chest. The guards shoved me inside, and I stumbled, falling at Ryker's feet. He looked down at me, his eyes filled with cold anger. “Alpha you sent for me,” I said, my voice trembling.Ryker nudged me with his boot, signalling the guards to hold me down. Sweat trickled down my face as he pulled out a cleaver knife, its bl

CHAPTER FIFTY EIGHT ROXANNE It was that Monday again. The rain had just stopped an hour ago, but the air remained chilled, the sky dark and menacing. Thunder grumbled in the distance, while lightning occasionally slashed through the grey clouds.I had let my hair down today and wore my favourite black dress with a scarf, hoping to hide my face. Whenever I showed up at school like this, the bullies didn’t recognise me, granting me a rare peaceful day without a visit to the nurse. How I loathed Mondays. And school. I wouldn't be here if mom hadn't insisted. I loved learning, but school was another matter entirely. They were two different things, but my mom was big on education. The only reason I kept coming back was for her. It made me feel closer to her, even if I had to endure this daily torment.Being the Alpha’s kid didn’t give me a free pass. I would've homeschooled like Missy across the street, but no, I was sentenced to this asylum called school. Not just any school, but a scho

CHAPTER FIFTY NINERYKERI woke to the sound of Roxanne’s moans of discomfort. She was sweating profusely, and I checked to see if the windows were open—they were. Her words were a jumble in her sleep, but I caught fragments: "I'm sorry" and "Luna.”Tears slipped down her closed eyes. I felt a surge of fear and worry. Why wasn’t she waking up from this nightmare?Suddenly, Roxanne screamed out, "Mom!" and sat upright. Her eyes were wide with terror, and the tears gushed out even faster. I wrapped my arms around her trembling body and held her close, saying nothing. She clung to me, burying her face in my chest. I held her tightly, my own heart racing with concern. After a while, her trembling ceased, and she pulled away slightly. I brushed the tears from her cheeks and whispered, "It's okay. You had a nightmare.”She sniffled and nodded. "How did you know?”“You were talking in your sleep.”Her eyes widened. “I saw my mom and the fire incident that happened when I was young. I don’t k

CHAPTER SIXTY ROXANNE I shook my head vigorously as the voice spoke into my mind. “It's you.”The image of Kara's lifeless body falling out of my wardrobe with her head crushed open and her eyes open, flashed in my mind. Blood on my hands. The tears slipped down my cheeks, cold and silent.Ryker slowly wrapped his arms around me, but I felt cold. The blanket wasn't doing any good. I shivered uncontrollably. "It's my fault, Ryker," I sobbed, wriggling out of his embrace. "I should never have pressured her. It's my fault she's dead.”Ryker disagreed. He cupped my face, his eyes full of concern and determination. "Roxanne, it's not your fault. You didn't kill Kara.”"But I did," I insisted, my voice trembling. "I told her really hurtful words– I said mean things. If she hadn't listened to me, she would still be alive.”Ryker's grip tightened, his thumbs brushing away my tears. "You were trying to protect her, Roxanne. Whoever did this, they are the ones responsible. Not you.”I wanted

CHAPTER SIXTY ONE ROXANNE The next day came, faster than expected and I was more than grateful for daylight. I had given myself jumpscared all through the night, with multiple imaginations. Every sound made me alert. I had no idea if Ryker came back to his bedroom because he wasn't at my side and the empty feeling gnawed at me. Forcing myself out of bed, I pulled on my dress and draped a shawl around my shoulder. My eyes were swollen from crying but they didn't hurt. I guess the ice worked after all.I walked to my room, which was still under investigation. Ryker wasn't there, but his Beta, Miles, was."Lady Roxanne, they need to ask you some questions," Beta Miles said gently, his eyes filled with concern. "But you don’t have to answer if you don’t feel up to it.”"I can't say a word without Ryker," I replied, looking around for any sign of him. The room felt cold and uninviting without him."He's out investigating some things," Miles explained, his voice calm but serious.I nodde

CHAPTER SIXTY TWORYKER I was woken up by a knock at my door early in the morning. Careful not to wake Roxanne, who was still asleep beside me, I slipped out of bed and padded softly to the door. My Beta, Miles, stood there, his expression serious but tinged with excitement."The murderer has been found, Alpha. We have evidence," Miles announced quietly.Relief and excitement surged through me. "Tell the officials I'll be down shortly. I need to get dressed.”As Miles nodded and left, I turned back to the bed, gently shaking Roxanne's shoulder. "Roxanne, wake up. They've found the murderer," I said softly. Her eyes fluttered open, and she rubbed them groggily. "What? Are you serious?" she mumbled, still half-asleep."It looks like they have solid evidence. Get dressed; we need to go downstairs," I urged. Her eyes widened as the news sank in. Her heart leapt for joy at the thought of finally seeing the person who had ruined her life and brought misfortune to the pack. Anger flared in

EPILOGUE (THE END)ROXANNE A YEAR LATER.It’s shocking how a year has passed, yet the souls of the dead remain with us, their memories fresh and haunting. The pain, the struggles, the healing—none of it has come easy. Losing someone you knew is like losing a part of yourself. It leaves a hole in your life, a constant ache that never truly fades. Each day feels like a battle to keep your sanity, to remember who you are without them.I walked slowly, each step heavy with sorrow, to the graves of Lilith and Kara. The ground was soft beneath my feet, the scent of damp earth mingling with the fresh aroma of the carnations and lilies I carried. After much contemplation, we decided to bury Lilith in Red Moon, beside her dead mate. Tears slipped down my cheeks, but I brushed them away quickly. Ryker mustn't see me cry.As I laid the flowers on the graves, memories of Lilith’s fierce spirit and Kara’s gentle smile flooded my mind. The pain of their loss was still raw, a wound that had not yet

CHAPTER SEVENTY FOURROXANNE Anger boiled inside me, hot and relentless. I didn’t like Lilith, but she was still my sister. War had been declared, and now swords clashed against swords, claws ripped into flesh. The three packs—White Moon and Red Moon—united against Blue Moon, turning the battlefield into a bloody nightmare.I watched as Colin joined Beta Miles, their ruthlessness clear. We clashed, our bodies moving in deadly grace. The anger and betrayal fueled my every move and for the first time I felt the extent of my powers. I fought with a strength I never knew I had.Miles plunged a knife into Ryker’s stomach, igniting a fury within me that I couldn’t contain. I wolfed out, throwing myself at Miles, my claws tearing at his flesh, my teeth sinking deep.Gasps echoed around me as everyone saw the size of my wolf form. But Miles was fast. He grabbed a knife and stabbed me, forcing me to morph back. Blood poured from my wound, but it wasn’t mine. It was his. Smiling through the pa

CHAPTER SEVENTY THREEROXANNEI'll let Beta Miles continue his side of the story but first let me tell you how we connected,” Lilith said and beamed at me. “Kara was a chatterbox and she couldn't keep secrets to herself. So she got so happy one day and told Beta Miles that she knew the prophecy, not caring that it could put me at risk. She told him it was Roxanne and me and they were faraway.”She sounded disappointed. “Beta Miles got interested and wanted to work for me so I could get what I wanted and he could get what he wanted. All of us wanted something and we burned for it. For me, it was revenge, for Kara it was peace.” Lilith touched my shoulder but I shrugged her hands off. “I knew kara was going to fail me someday. She stopped writing to me after receiving my letter, then one day, she said she couldn't kill you because she liked you and you were nice.”Tears slipped down my eyes. Kara… she had always told me she would never hurt me. It wasn't a promise, it was the truth. Sh

CHAPTER SEVENTY TWO LILITHWe all gasped back to reality and took indrawn gasps while the necromancer removed the needles from our foreheads. Roxanne and Zane stared at me like they were seeing a ghost and I motioned for the necromancer to stay with me and not leave yet.“Mom– oh my God,” Roxanne whispered in disbelief as she placed a hand over her head.Zane stared at me with pity. An expression I loathed with my being.“I know it's hard to decipher,” the necromancer said. “It's also overwhelming. Your mother sacrificed Lilith’s life to save you because you were a powerful child, Roxanne. You were the prophecy blue moon had years ago and I knew I had to seal your powers. Your mother was in so much pain that day but she had to do what she needed to do.”Roxanne shook her head as tears slipped down her face. “She had a choice.”“But she still had to make a choice from both,” the necromancer said. “You were chosen, Roxanne. Sealing your powers away was what made you weak. You were neve

What do you do when the secrets of the past, the secrets you've longed to know, are finally before you? Do you turn away because you know it won't end well, or do you stay because you've been kept in the dark for too long?My eyes darted to a corner, and there he was—Ryker, bound with chains. Just like my vision had revealed. He looked exhausted and in pain, his clothes stained with blood, and wounds covering his skin. A raw gasp escaped my lips, and my heart clenched. The girl smiled and approached me. My heart thumped loudly in my chest, as I watched her movement. There was something hauntingly familiar about her.It scared me that we looked exactly alike. It was as if I was staring at a reflection of myself, except this reflection had blue eyes while mine were hazel."What's going on?" Zane demanded, his voi

CHAPTER SEVENTY ROXANNE Selina briefed me on the plan as we moved quickly towards the area where Ryker was.She told me that she could trace the way they went since Beta Miles was her mate, but I couldn't scent Ryker since he had rejected me. If my wolf had surfaced earlier, I would have been able to sense that he was in danger, but now I couldn't. My heart pounded loudly as I thought about the battle. I was unsure about myself. I had no idea if I could defeat Beta Miles. We headed towards Blue Moon. Confusion sprawled on my face as I wondered what had brought the Beta and Alpha here. It must be his way of reuniting the three packs so they could turn against me. After all, I was a threat. As we neared the location, the air grew tense. The sound of battle echoed through the trees.“Stay close,” Selina whispered, her eyes scanning the area. “We need to find Ryker and get him out of here.”I nodded, my senses heightened. The scent of blood and fear filled the air , and I could feel th

CHAPTER SIXTY NINEROXANNE As I traipsed through the unfamiliar terrain, everything began to make sense. The reason for everything that had happened. The clues were there from the beginning but they had been ignored.Of course, no one paid attention to things that didn't involve them, just like I hadn't.The paths where wolves once danced, the willow tree, the freedom in your hands. It was all in the book. Ryker's mom had known it would happen someday, and that's why she wrote, hoping it would reach the person who truly needed to see it.The key to freedom in your hands wasn't what I had thought it was. Back then in the dungeon, I had thought the key to freedom was an actual key that could take me out of the dark place and out of Red Moon. But it wasn't. It was about realising who I was and accessing my powers. The willow tree at the cliff was what I needed to find first, for everything to make sense. And I guess it found me. And the prophecy… I still didn't know how I was the chosen

CHAPTER SIXTY SEVEN ROXANNE I was stupefied, staring at Ryker in utter confusion. Anger, sadness, and pain engulfed me as I tried to understand what was going on, but I couldn't make sense of it. Ryker was my mate? How? Memories flooded back—how he lashed out at me when we first met, telling me I had no wolf. Subconsciously, I touched my neck. Was that why he kept touching it, searching for my wolf mark? Was that why he brought me to the Red Moon pack? It dawned on me then—I had just been rejected.Since I had no wolf, I couldn't feel the mate bond or the pain of rejection. But Ryker could. He groaned in agony, placing a hand on his chest. Selina squealed in delight, clapping her hands together."Finally, I won't have a mentally deranged woman for a sister-in-law," she jeered.Anguish washed over me. This was Selina's endgame. She had set me up so I would be rejected and chased away. But I didn't utter a word. Instead, I turned to Ryker."If that's the situation, why didn't you tel
