*Blood Claw pack lands, seven years ago*
~Alpha Gunner’s Point of View~
“Have the arrangements been finalized,” I asked, looking at my Beta.
“Absolutely Alpha, they should be here tonight, about four hours,” he responded.
“Perfect. Ensure the kitchen staff has a large enough feast,” I furthered.
“Already on it, our warriors got six deer this morning just for tonight. It is all being prepared. We got this Gunner, don’t sweat it,” he said, trying to calm me down.
One of my biggest rivals, Alpha Zander of the Long Tooth pack, was coming tonight, with his entire family and dozens of his pack. We were old friends but recently started stepping on each other’s toes trying to get more land, more bodies for our defenses. I needed to keep him happy and I had to assume he felt the same toward me. I didn’t want t piss him off but I wasn’t going to roll over for him either.
It only made sense that our families join, and in exchange for him staying out of my business and swearing to never challenge me, I offered my daughter Tyra. She was a smart child, willful at times but beautiful. She was my pup in every way, too much like me sometimes in personality. Having her cost me my fated mate and it’s always been a confusing thing. I always wanted a large family, as did my mate, but I guess the Goddess had other plans for her and two was more than her body could handle.
Losing your fated mate is something few recover from, something that typically forces a wolf to go insane. I couldn’t very well leave the two pups that my sweet mate gave me but looking at them was a painful reminder of what I lost. A huge part of me died that day, and the only thing I have to look forward to now is growing my pack and ensuring sharp matches for my line to carry on.
I was having second thoughts about the chosen mate for my son Tyson though, she was a pretty little thing, and I found myself getting more and more curious about her. She was far too young for me to consider mating, but the thought often crossed my mind. I didn’t fear many things but I was an idiot not to fear the council on some level.
There are few rules werewolves followed, but even someone such as myself had to abide by this one. Mating or marking pups is punishable by castration or possibly worse. Unfortunately there are those who keep a look out for such things. The council is a governing body of supernatural creatures that try to keep the peace, but lately my new conquests were interfering with their desire for law and order. I needed this alliance with Zander since he had about as much disdain for them as I did. Together, we would be much stronger and they would have a harder time reigning us in. Clearly the council wouldn’t approve of having a 10 year old make a blood oath to marry when she came of age, but I didn’t much care. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time I forced such an arrangement.
“Alpha, I need you to review the final agreement, and Tyra is ready for you to speak with,” my Gamma said, popping his head in my office.
“Yes, I’ll look at it now that way you can make any revisions while I speak to her,” I said, motioning for him to take a seat.
An hour later I made my way to the little cottage where Tyra lived. I rarely let her go far from it. She had a perfect little yard to play in, a couple of little friends to run around with and a couple of animals … but for the most part I kept her in a bubble. I would kill any man who looked at her out of lust, or dared to look at her really at all. She looked exactly like her mother, and I did absolutely everything to keep her safe, shield her. Of course there were some things I made sure she was part of in our pack world, she needed to know who I was, what this pack was and what we represented. Fear … and strength … and above all fortitude. No one fucks with Blood Claw and that reputation must stand no matter what.
“Darling come sit for a minute, I need to talk to you,” I shouted, watching Tyra run around in the yard with her collie.
She smiled and ran toward me, I hadn’t seen her in two days now since I’d been busy preparing for the event.
“Yes daddy,” she said, jumping into my lap.
She was indeed daddy’s girl, but she rarely saw the side of me everyone else did. I saved any semblance of my sweet side for her, any little bit of her mother that still existed in my heart I projected onto my darling pup. Her brother Tyson had trained as a warrior since he could stand, I didn’t baby him whatsoever, and he didn’t need me nearly as much. He was away training this summer, and I gave strict instructions that no one speak to him about this party. Surely he might try to object, he might think he has a say in who Tyra weds. But no one will make that decision except for me.
“We’re having a party tonight my love and you are going to be the guest of honor,” I said, holding her chin.
“It’s not my birthday,” she said, giving me a strange look. She was too smart sometimes.
“You’re right sweet girl but daddy is having some friends over, and I’m going to introduce you to a young man, he’s two years older than you. He’s from a very good family and one day, you will go to live with him, and have pups all your own,” I said, still holding her face.
“One day soon,” she asked.
“No sweetie, when you have your wolf, many years from now,” I said.
“Is he my mate,” she asked.
I tried very hard to control everything Tyra learned in school, all of her lesson plans were personally approved by myself or my Beta. But teaching her about mates was something I couldn’t keep from her no matter how hard I tried. She was taught how to be a Luna since she was old enough to speak. I always knew no matter what the Goddess had in store for her, I would be the one to ensure her match.
“He is your mate my love, he’s very handsome,” I said, trying to reassure her.
I’d never even seen what the boy looked like but he was from a strong Alpha line, surely he looked like a warrior.
“Well if he’s my mate then I can’t wait to meet him, I hope he thinks I’m pretty,” she said.
“Of course he will think you are absolutely beautiful! And just to be sure I have Hildy here to do your hair, and she’s brought you a dress she worked very hard on,” I said, turning her around to see her dress.
I sat her down and she ran to it, her face fully lit up with excitement. She jumped up and down, clapping her little hands.
“Now be a good girl and get ready, Hildy will bring you down for the party,” I said, kissing her head.
“Thank you daddy I love it,” she said, twirling around with her dress.
“You are most welcome sweetie, I’ll see you in a little while,” I said, nodding at the servant.
I made my way to the large yard in front of our packhouse to oversee the preparations and then get ready myself.
Before I knew it guests were arriving and the entire pack was giddy with the excitement that unmated she-wolves would be in attendance. Our packs tried to throw parties every year or two on the chance that some wolves might find their fated mates, or at least one they wanted to pick for a mate.
After about half an hour of mingling I took a knife and hit it against my glass, indicating I wanted everyone’s attention.
“Thank you all for coming, it is an honor to host the Long Tooth pack and celebrate the joining of two great families. Alpha Zander, may I present my lovely daughter Tyra to your son, the future Alpha Zachary,” I said, holding Tyra’s hand.
I looked down to see her frantically looking around for the boy. Her long brown hair was curled perfectly, her light blue gown made her look like the princess she was. She never looked more like her mother and it tugged at my heart.
Zachary came forward, and took Tyra’s other hand, kissing it.
“It’s a great pleasure to meet you Tyra, you’re beautiful,” he said.
Alpha Zander was right behind him, and looked down at the children approvingly. I let out a quiet breath.
“Shall we,” Zander said, drawing a dagger from his waist.
I pulled up Tyra’s hand.
“This will just hurt for a moment darling,” I said.
She looked at me with uncertainty, and I realized I should have prepared her for this part, but a Luna should be prepared for anything at any moment. I hoped she would take the cut well.
Zander slashed Zachary’s hand and then moved toward Tyra’s hand. I watched her intently and she closed her eyes. Zander cut her hand and she didn’t flinch, she didn’t cry out in pain. I couldn’t have been more proud.
Zander joined their hands and I began to say the oath.
“We are gathered here today to witness the blood oath of Tyra Collins and Zachary Owens. As Tyra is younger, when she shall come of age and get her wolf, Zachary will claim her as his mate and Luna. Zachary will then ascend to be Alpha of the Long Tooth pack and usher in a continued era of prosperity and health for both our great families and packs,” I said, clapping my hand over the childrens’.
Zander then put his hand over mine.
“Zachary, do you swear to accept Tyra as your mate, and Luna, and to reject all others who may try to lay claim or interfere,” Zander said.
“Yes, I swear on my blood and the blood of my mate,” he said.
Zachary turned to look Tyra in the eye and he smiled. My heart was full. This was the right match.
“Tyra my dear, do you swear to accept Zachary as your mate and Alpha, and to reject all others who may try to lay claim or interfere,” I said.
She looked up at my eyes, there was some confusion but I could tell she knew better than to show it.
“Yes, I swear on my blood and the blood of my mate,” she said.
I grinned, more proud than ever. The crowd erupted in a series of applause, howls and cheers.
“Let’s celebrate,” I shouted.
Present Day~Ridge’s Point of View~“What’s the point of playing catch if you don’t catch the ball,” I yelled at my Beta.“I didn’t exactly get much sleep last night, you know the pups are due any day now. Mindy is just tossing around all night, uncomfortable so I don’t sleep either,” Pike responded, running to get the ball I threw.I sighed, jealous as hell. My Beta found his mate last year at a party and now both he and my Gamma had their mates.I was 26 and still hadn’t found my mate, which was just insane. The only thing that made sense was that she was still maybe a pup, that’s why I couldn’t find her. I did everything pos
~Tyra’s Point of View~ “Again,” I yelled, staring down at my bloody opponent. “Screw that, we’re done,” Vanessa said, spitting a mouthful of blood. I lowered my boxing gloves and smiled victoriously. “So you’re giving up,” I grinned. “Girl you know I never win against you, I don’t know why I let you knock me around. I guess I live for those couple of punches I manage to get in,” she said, getting to her feet. “It’s good training for us both and you know it,” I said, wrapping my arm around her shoulders. “Yeah yeah, well not all of us come from Alpha stock,” she said, sticking her tongue out at me.
“Tyra, phone for you,” Vanessa yelled at the top of her lungs. “Fuck Vanessa I don’t think they heard you in China,” I laughed. It was just after breakfast and I’d been out training early this morning. I was tired and ready for a nap already. I stared at the phone laying on the counter, knowing full well who was likely on the other end. My heart began to race and I desperately wanted to hang it up. I sucked in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. I couldn’t put him off any longer, or just my luck he would show up. “Hello,” I said, finally picking up the receiver. “Tyra? I don’t appreciate hearing you cuss baby, that’s hardly the perfect girl I remember,” a voice said. I immedia
“So I’m Ryan by the way,” the Beta said after we’d gotten to the end of my pack’s lands. “I’m Tyra, but I guess you already know all about me,” I said, staring out the window. “I do know a lot ... didn’t know about the pink hair though. And in all the pictures we have I didn’t see any tats or piercings, so Zach’s gonna be pissed,” he said, laughing himself into a frenzy. “It’s my body,” I said, plainly. I had on a sort of t-shirt, it was sleeveless and cut low in the back, showing off some of my colored skin. “Sure sweetie, for what, another three days until you get your wolf,” he said, grinning. I didn’t reply, just kept my head turned, even though I’d felt his eyes on me constantly. It was quiet for about an hour, just the low radio on. I felt myself just drifting off to sleep when he suddenly decided to be talkative. “I’ve known Zach my whole life. I’m only about three months older than him. He’s my brother in every way, I’d do anything for him. I’m sure you don’t remember bu
“Here we are! This is my room, my office is at the end of the hall. We’re moving into a house that’s a little more secluded, it’s still being furnished. But it’ll be all ready for us to move in soon, not long after you get your wolf,” he said, laying me down on a large bed.I immediately sat up straight, and fixed my shirt that had ridden up.“Here’s her things,” Ryan said, popping his head in.“Thanks dude, have dinner brought up to us in about an hour okay,” Zach said.“You got it,” Ryan said, and I looked at him long enough to catch him winking at me.I looked down at my hands, never more confused in my whole life. If Zach truly was m
Dinner was awkward, but Zach tried to make the best of it, I could tell. He had a small table brought into the room and we sat on the edge of the bed and ate. He made small talk about different things going on in the pack, mentioned some of the top people I should know. He talked about our house and how excited he was to show me, he wanted to take me to see it soon.He was really trying. He was doing everything he could to make me comfortable. And yet I was sitting here fantasizing about jumping him. Thinking about what was under his clothes. Wondering if we were in fact staying together in this room tonight, and I was pretty sure I already knew the answer.I was so ready to hate him, I wanted to hate him. I hated that I couldn’t hate him. Fuck this was so confusing I couldn’t stand it!When
~Zach’s Point of View~ Last night with Tyra was the best night of my life. I hated that I hadn’t saved myself for her, but I had urges I couldn’t resist. I made it very clear to the she-wolves I did fool around with that it would never be anything more than just casual, and I always wore protection. Actually allowing a woman to feel me fully, that would only be for Tyra. My beautiful mate, my Luna. She was everything I could have wanted and more … well a lot more. The piercings and tattoos were a shock. I knew she did it to piss me off, to let me know she was in control of her body, not me. I knew she probably hated me, had a ton of preconceived notions about what her life here would be like. I knew my father’s reputation, and I knew she was forced into our blood oath. But she was my real, fated mate so none of that mattered. I just had t
~Tyra’s Point of View~I hated to take out my piercings and something just told me that he wouldn’t let me put them back in. I had mixed feelings about it, but I was sure his parents definitely wouldn’t approve. Now that I thought about it, I was feeling ridiculous with my pink hair. I was going to make a fool out of myself. How the hell could I be presented as a Luna to the Long Tooth pack looking like a damn troll toy?The she-wolves were busy in conversation, I had just gotten out of the shower. I bit my lip and sighed.“Do any of you guys have dark brown hair dye, do you think we’d have time to do it,” I asked.“Oh my god … yes I do. Would you really? Zach would love that. I mean I haven’t heard him
~Epilogue~ ~Four Months Later~ ~Missy’s Point of View~ “Are you sure you’re ready to try this baby,” Nate asked, from underneath me. I made a face, since I was already struggling like hell with my current position. I was splayed out across the top of Nate’s body with my back to his chest. My hair was likely suffocating him. Between everything with the village and having little Fisher, we rarely take advantage of the witches’ offers to send us somewhere exotic anymore. But tonight had been planned for weeks, and both grandmas were handling things so we could have a weekend away. However, I still had to have Kendra pop in every 12 hours
~Missy’s Point of View~ ~Next Month~ “Kendra I don’t understand, what’s so important that you had to--” I fumbled into the dark room to find the light, wondering why she was dragging me into the daycare at 8pm on a Friday night. I flicked the switch and my jaw dropped. “SURPRISE!!!” I gasped and covered my mouth as everyone cheered and shouted. There were balloons all over and confetti flew through the air. I looked next to Renata and saw a giant cake, easily four tiers. On top was a brown haired doll in a shiny red dress just like she’d made me for the dance. There were two males in tuxedos both holding on to the doll.
~Missy’s Point of View~ *Are you really not going to shift back,* I said, feeling defeated. My wolf and I laid in front of the packhouse and everyone gawked at us. It had been hours and hours since my shift, and my wolf seemed to be content to stay. She was still mad that I forced her shift early, she was mad that our mates weren’t here to see it and help. She was determined to stay until she got to see them and offer a piece of her mind. I was certain her little badass attitude would fall away once she saw them. The humans were very curious about her, and she let them pet her. She thought it made her feel special and important. Admired, when she couldn’t get that satisfaction from her mates. “Everyone can
~Nate’s Point of View~Could there be anything more impossible than both my mates needing me and having to choose? Missy only gets her first shift once, we had to know it would happen after getting marked. But we couldn’t put off the invasion, not when the Shadows were all ready to go.Would Ryan have been okay without me? Probably. It wasn’t like I did anything but try to comfort him anyhow. This was a whole new dynamic that would take some real thought. Two mates absolutely dependent on me, and Ryan having two dependent on him as well. We were as joined as three people could be. If you’d asked me even a month ago who I would choose in a moment like this, of course I’d have said Missy. She should always be the number one choice. But now I also know, if anything happened to Ryan it would positively devas
~Renata’s Point of View~ I felt Diego now as if he were so close, but I still couldn’t mind-link him. I watched out the window as there was a crazy rain storm that seemed to come and go, then a glowing light in the distance made my jaw drop. I quickly opened my two windows in shock, trying to be sure I was seeing things correctly. A forest fire. Ohh goddess! They’ll never put that out! They’re gonna burn the damn pack to the ground! Oh fuck I gotta get outta here! My mind went into overdrive and I suddenly had to wonder if I could shift and be able to get out of the ankle cuff, I’d have a smaller leg. Would that work? Desperate times Renata… I cle
~Ryan’s Point of View~I hadn’t been in the battle of Blood Claw, but everyone damn well knew the stories. A witch that could raise the dead, use them as a fucked up to way to fight your enemy. And in smoke so thick you can’t even see what’s coming at you? I didn’t sign up for this shit!*Renata, it’s all for her. We are here for her,* Huck reminded me.*It’s all for killing our fucking father,* I reminded him.We all had knives or daggers of some sort, but no guns. Did guns even work against the dead? Did knives? Fuck if I know, there isn’t a training manual for batshit crazy witches!*Katrina thinks this wit
~Missy’s Point of View~ I can only make popcorn for so damn long, what am I going to do for all these people tonight? On top of that, I had a huge migraine and my skin was just super itchy. Maybe if I could sneak away and get a bath I’d feel better. I was already sick of the wink and nudge act from Nate’s mom who kept finding excuses to look at my neck. Although, several people did. They said I smelled different and of course everyone knew what that meant. “We’ll have to have a proper Luna ceremony,” someone said. I had no idea what that entailed, but with my mates gone and my best friend kidnapped it was hardly something I could waste my brain space on for now.
~Diego’s Point of View~ I stood on the practically barren Blood Claw lands, and could hardly imagine what this looked like once upon a time. Tyson didn’t much like to talk about his childhood, he said he was just a mindless zombie doing and going where he was told much like everyone else. That was hard for me to believe now, knowing how strong and confident he was today. But I guess we were all children at some point, just eager to please our parents. Goddess knows I was always trying to prove myself. I had a massive family but we were now spread out all over the place. My parents still live with my youngest sister who has yet to shift. I have no clue what they’ll do when they finally have an empty house, maybe … just maybe I could convince them to come here. They didn
~Renata’s Point of View~ After Tyler’s stupid ass witch succeeded in scaring the shit out of me, everyone left me alone. One of the cooks from the packhouse I knew so well … an older female named Mary, brought me some fruits and finger foods. She refused to really look at or speak to me though. I couldn’t hold it against her, she was obviously scared. Sometime around two in the morning I did drift off to sleep, though it was so light and paranoid I woke barely feeling I’d slept. The sun was up, yet I was still here. I absolutely did dream I woke up back at home, in the strong arms I’d come to know so well. To depend on. How’s this possible? Aren’t they coming for me?
