Family Matters

The first one to walk inside is my mom, her eyebrows shoot up when she takes in our attire.

"I'm guessing you guys reconciled?" she murmurs, not too excited and she takes a seat at the head of the table, next to me, "Good morning, Jolene."

"Good morning, Ms... sorry, what's your name?" she asks and my mom shoots me a very offended look because I never told Jolene her name. Or anything about my family.

"Magdalena," my mom responds with a forced smile, "Nice to formally meet you."

"Magdalena?" Jolene repeats and I know what she's thinking, "What a... very gorgeous name, now I get why Leopoldo, Jacinto and Archibaldo got their equally gorgeous names."

"Jolene is not that bad, either. I approve," my mom says. Jolene gives her a narrowed look, probably wondering if she's being mean or not, "What's your mother's name?"

"I don't have a mom, she died a long time ago, like eight months. She's gone and forgotten. And won't be missed by no one," Jolene says and my mom looks horrifi
