The sun is beginning to set as Eva and I walk through the pack lands. Eva’s hands are in her jacket pockets, and her eyes keep darting to the ground like she’s deep in thought. I know she’s been through a lot. Hell, I can see it in the way she carries herself, like she’s ready to bolt at any moment. But I can’t rush her.

“How’s Sophia been adjusting?” I ask, keeping my voice light, knowing how much she likes to talk about her daughter.

Eva’s face softens at the mention of her little girl, and she gives me a small smile. “She’s doing well. Better than I thought, honestly. She’s made a couple of friends already, and Camellia’s been amazing with her.”

“That’s good. I’m glad,” I say, kicking at a stray pebble on the path. “Sophia’s a strong kid, just like her mom.”
