That morning, I walked in the forest for hours on end, stepping on the dried leaves and twigs. Every few minutes I would see something I wanted to show my mum or dad and then realize that I no longer had them. It was lonely and scared, but I kept on walking.
Throughout that day, I saw all sorts of creatures and animals, but for some reason, they stuck by me. A squirrel followed me the farthest, going along with me for hours on end. He would jump in the trees while we walked, and when he sensed danger, he would come to a stop. At night I would light a fire under the trees to ward away the animals that would come near me.
He stayed with me for a few days, finding me the best fruits, and then he disappeared suddenly. When I got to a place I felt comfortable in, I stopped my journey. It was close to a river and had a lot of trees, for shade, and a little abandoned cave I could stay in at night. There were fruit bushes and all the herbs I needed to continue my witchcraft practice, and I said a silent prayer of thanks to the moon goddess.
I dug two shallow graves with my hand in the earth and planted a fee of my seeds to represent my parents. When the trees grew I would carve their names over them. I also placed a slab of stone over the mounds of the earth so I could identify where they were planted.
I lit a sage bundle and an incense stick and went around the cave with them, every single day to ward off evil spirits, and I lived off fruit and the water from the river. It was quiet, but I enjoyed it, because at least I was safe and nobody was going to ask me about shifting into a wolf or accuse me of being a witch. I was in pain, and I mourned my parents, day and night,
Sometimes I would have dreams and vividly see them, have my mother reassure me that it wasn't my fault, but I could not get over it. First I was a witch amidst a pack of wolves, and I couldn't even shift. Then we hear a prophecy, and apparently, my presence in the pack was bad luck and made the two packs fight, basically caused all this.
I would play back the memories of that night over and over again, wondering what it was that made me turn my mother back into that danger.I spent many days dwelling on the things that had happened in Mystic Shadow pack. Why did Alpha Khal reject me? And what was all that talk about mates when I had not felt anything?
There were many questions heavy on my mind, but I kept it together, only thinking about those things at night.During the day, I planted many of my seeds, turning my little cave area into a home for myself. Just before the sunsets, I would take walks and help some wounded animals, take in some fresh air.
It had been a full cycle when it happened the first time. The moon was out and full, and I thanked the moon goddess for sustenance. Fireflies were dancing in the air and it seemed too magical to be inside, so I took a walk towards the river to get a drink, and perhaps to catch a fish or two to eat.
When I got there, and I caught my reflection in the river, I was startled.
I had always had long, flowy locks of hair, but the hair was hard to manage, so since my journey began, I had been wearing it in pigtails, only taking it out when I wanted to wash it. That night, as the fireflies flew and the owls hooted a song, my hair was glowing, like the fireflies were in it.My hair was shiny regularly, but the glow from it now could light up my way. I quickly took a splash of water from the river to rinse my face. Perhaps I had made a mistake and was seeing things differently.
When nothing changed and my hair stayed glowing, I let out a little laugh. If only my mum could see me this once.
I couldn't sleep because for the first time in ages, my cave felt suffocating - too small. So I stayed awake and witnessed the second odd thing in that day.
As the sun came back up, my hair went back to being brown, and I noticed it had grown a little bit. I prayed to the moon goddess to thank her for the gift and went about my daily life.
I met different spirits and creatures; little spirits that wanted to be set free from their mortal life, animals with wounded souls and bodies, and even a few lone wolves who were hurt from a fight and needed help.I always helped them heal whatever was broken, gave them a drink of water and sent them on their way. What I hoped was that in time, they would give back to the forest as I had given to them, and a few did, thanking me for my services and paying me in whatever they had. A few gave me knives and trinkets, while many merely thanked me and went on their way.
Time had passed by very quickly, and the days seemed to blur together, each one an adventure. The trees I had planted for my mother and father had grown tall and strong, and I used the knife I had been given by Elise to carve their names into its bark.
Sometimes when I had a quiet day and saw something that reminded me of my home, I thought about the Mystic Shadow pack. I wondered how they were doing, and if they could one day see that what happened was out of my control.I liked to burn some wood bark as incense, and they all smelled so alike to home that sometimes I found myself praying for Elise, Moira, the children and all the elders. I hoped they were all doing well. I understood where they were coming from, and I forgave them for the way I had been treated.
Khal though? Nothing of the sort. I hated him with all my being, and since I was no longer part of his pack, he wasn't my Alpha. Or my mate. I didn't want anything to do with him, and I was glad to be far from him.
He ruined my life.
Khal's POV"We have to attend this party. “said Stephen. At this point, I don't even know who the Alpha is. I don't want to attend a stupid party and pretend like everything is alright when I am hurting from not having a mate. Who am I?I am Alpha Khal. The Alpha King of the mystic shadow pack and right now I am not feeling very like an Alpha. I have two younger ones (Michael and Caroline). My parents had been murdered by witches over fifteen years ago and left me to take over the pack as a young teenager. I dream everyday of getting my revenge over the murderers but they have remained in the shadows ever since.Everybody expects me to get a mate so they will have a Luna. Even my younger ones have gotten their mates. I have nothing. It is like the moon goddess was laughing at me. The pack were whispering behind me. People were looking at me with pity which I detest. So you will excuse me when I say I don't want to go for a New Year's Eve party in another town. However, I had to go b
Mira's POV As I had no connection to the real world, I have no idea how much time had passed. I know it has been years though. My parent's trees were now fully fledged. Oh how I missed my mother. She would have comforted me. I love being in the wild but it gets lonely, very lonely. I decided to suck it up and go to the river to find dinner. The moon shone brightly. I walked out of my cave, the air was cool, the birds asleep. That's when I saw her. She was on the floor and her head was facing the other way. A lone wolf. At first I hid because although I had healed some lone wolves in the past, I was traumatized and would love to stay alive thank you very much. "Who are you?", I asked. She didn't reply. I then caught the moonlight reflecting off a pool she was in. "That doesn't make sense the river is over there-the river is over there-THE RIVER IS OVER THERE." She was bleeding, profusely. I ran over and asked what had happened. She didn't reply and her breaths were heavily
Khal's POVI woke up drenched in sweat. The nightmares had become worse. I could hear my parents' screams, their throats being slit and my own futile begging. I couldn't get up. I had become worse overnight. I also smelt a distinct rotting. It was from me, the healer hadn't been lying after all. The curse was taking over. As the Alpha of my pack, I've always prided myself on being in control. I'm the one who makes the tough decisions and ensures that my pack is safe and secure. But now, I find myself in a situation that I have no control over. The curse of the rejection has taken a hold of me, and it's slowly killing me from within. I had my reasons, but they were not good enough for the Moon Goddess. She cursed me, promising me a slow and painful death that would come from within. Over time, I began to notice the changes in myself. I felt weaker, more tired, and less like myself.I tried to hide my deteriorating condition from my pack, but my Beta Stephen could see that somethin
Chapter 9 Although Mira had only known Anabelle for a few days, she had come to find her as a fast friend. She could hunt as well in her human form and her wolf form, and Mira had found her to be quite an asset. She could identify a lot of the plants that Mira needed for her poultices and elixirs, and she even knew how to grind them too, which made her a perfect friend for Mira, and a very useful one too. They would go down the river for dinner every night, searching for fish or freshly wounded animals that were too close to death to be saved. On one of their walks along the river banks, Mira stared into the running clear water only to see Anabelle's reflection looking right back at her. Their aim that night was to get food for dinner, but Mira wanted to know who she had been sharing her home with a little better. “So, Anabelle, tell me more about yourself,” she said, keeping her face neutral. “So far, all I know about you is that you're from Spooky Hollow, you are the only surv
Caroline's POVI stood at the edge of the forest, surveying the gathered wolves with a critical eye. They had come from all corners of the land, answering the call to hunt for the potion that would cure the curse of the rejected. The curse, which caused wolves to physically rot had plagued my brother for years. But now, with the promise of a cure, our hope had been reignited.I had volunteered to lead the hunt, a decision that had been met with positivity among the ranks. After all, though she was not a warrior like her brother or a seasoned hunter but they knew I possessed a sharp mind and a keen eye for strategy, and I was determined to lead this hunt to success."Listen up, everyone," I called out, her voice ringing clear over the crowd. "We have a mission to complete. The potion that will cure the curse of the rejected is somewhere in these woods. We know the potion can only be brewed by a powerful witch who lives deep in the forest. Our goal is to find her and convince her to giv
Chapter 11.Elise's POV.Elise looked around at the members of the pack that were left and heaved a heavy sigh. These were the only people left of the Mystic Shadow pack, every other person had either died in the attack or had died after the loss. Moira and her little wolves had been making a lot of noise and causing uproar in the park. Elise worried that she was a loose end and would somehow lead to the death of more members. Her boys had become tyrants, running across town. She was the last surviving Elder, as the others had fallen victim to a sickness she could not make either head or tail off. She felt a sadness in her heart, because she knew that if Mira was home, she would have healed them and there would be less losses. She wondered where the poor girl was, and if she was doing okay. She had not yet mastered her shifts as at the last time Elise had seen her during a full moon shift, and she had no reason to believe that now would be any different. Justin, one of the little b
Jack's POV (A searcher)I was a lone wolf, wandering through the vast and dark forest when I heard about Alpha Khal's curse. It was said that he had been cursed by the moon goddess, and no one in his pack could cure him. I didn't have any one as all my pack members had been killed. I was once part of a pack, but they were all killed by the blood drinkers. They came upon us in the middle of the night, without warning, and attacked us with a ferocity that I had never seen before. I was on the outskirts of the pack at the time, and I managed to flee into the forest. I heard the sounds of my pack mates being killed as I ran, and I knew that I was the only one left. I was traumatized by the attack, and I wandered for days, unsure of where to go or what to do. I felt guilty and grief-stricken, wishing that I had been able to save my pack mates. But as the days went by, I began to realize that I was the only one left. I had to survive on my own, no matter how hard it was. I found a cave to
Alpha Khal's POV.The search for the cure had been ongoing for quite a few days now, and nothing had come forth from it. His arm had been weaker of late, and he had come to find that he could not even lift it to put food in his mouth. He was always tired, and none of the fixes they had been bringing his way had even made a dent in his well being. The one they brought last had tasted a little too much like swamp, and he hated it, but he had drank it, only for it to have no effect on his health. The person who brought it had said it came from the best healer in the next pack over, and it had come with a note that read:“made from the best rosemary, foxtrot, and foxglove.”And when he read that, desperate for healing, he had downed the entire bottle as per the instructions. His sister, Caroline had been sitting in the room when he downed the bottle, and when he twisted up his face, she had burst out laughing.“You did this to yourself Khal. Do you know that? Why in god's name had you r
