SCARLETT :

She buried her face in the crook of his neck, all that was left was a glimpse of her icy blue eyes staring directly into mine. I didn't need to see the rest of her expression to know that she disliked me.

"Rosie," Jax gently pushed her off him.

"Behave, sister. Jax just got here, at least let him get some rest," Aaron chided.

"Jax is a sweetheart, I'm sure he doesn't mind." She pouted. "Isn't that right, Jaxy?"

Okay, there's a lot of things I already hate about this place, and it's all Rosie.

Alpha Jax is a sweetheart?

She already has a ridiculous nickname for him? Why is he letting her call him Jaxy?

Are they lovers? My stomach churned at the thought.

"It's fine, Aaron," he replied. "Rosie's just excited."

"Why wouldn't I be? I haven't seen you in two years." She linked her arm with his. "Come, let me show you to your room. I personally redesigned it to your liking." She giggled. My hunch tells me she's pretending to be all angel-like with pretty butterflies floating aroun

SCARLETT :"Pardon me," I cleared my throat using my fist as a microphone. "Welcome, oh your royal highness," I drawled with sarcasm."Save it," she shut me up."Your majesty, I am quite exhausted. Is it urgent?" I deadpanned."It is actually," she sat on my bed. "What's your relationship with the Alpha?" she asked me."I thought he told you that earlier.""I forgot. Remind me.""I thought princesses were meant to be smart. I'm his assistant.""Jax has never had a female assistant," she flipped her hair. "And I'm more intelligent than your lower-class ass would ever be.""Didn't know you were a stalker. Also, there's always time for firsts.""Our fathers were friends. I've known him since he was struggling to memorize the pack rules. You did something to get the job."Is there an award for that? I thought to myself."The point is," she continued. "If you're an assistant, let it remain that way. I hope you're not sleeping with him," she shot arrows into my eyes with her stare."Or are

JAX:When it comes to her, I don't think. I just do whatever comes to mind. I become irrational in ways that leave me in awe. I didn't plan to kiss her in my office. A part of me itched to, probably because our bond was still there, and I had always managed to keep my fickle desires at bay until then.I was partially grateful for her stomping on my foot so harshly; I would've gone all the way with her. The aftermath of that was something I wasn't ready to deal with. The only issue was how to get her out of my life and mine as soon as possible before she completely infiltrates my existence and I have no control over my actions.I usually don't like to use torture; hell, it wasn't like she was my enemy, the moon goddess was. She paired me with such a stubborn woman after all. I thought I had succeeded in making it clear to her, yet she seemed far from understanding. For the first time in a while, I thought about what to do with Scarlett De Luca, and it was clear that I had to make it ha

JAX:"Hide," Scarlett spoke in a hushed tone."Why should I?" I refused. "We're not doing anything wrong.""Can you just try to understand? It's bad enough that Rosie's accusing me of sleeping with you to get this job," she groaned."Don't mind anything that she says. She doesn't make sense most of the time.""Trying to get you to reason with me is useless," she hissed."Miss?" The maid knocked again."A minute, please," she raised her voice. "Sit," she instructed me, leaving me shocked. If commanding me was a surprise, then she might've succeeded. She got a file out and gave it to me."We shouldn't have taken too much time to open the door, but I suppose this would do since you're so eager to put me in jeopardy," she muttered."Do you have to care so much about what other people think?"She didn't reply to me. Instead, she proceeded to open the door. She must be upset. Truthfully, we were doing nothing incriminating; moreover, whatever we did was none of their business. If I wanted,

JAX:"I'd prefer to see your stylist myself, please. That would be more convenient," I replied."Alright," he smiled."My personal assistant and I would like to excuse ourselves," I announced."She's not done eating," Aaron spoke for her."I see," I narrowed my eyes, went to her side of the table, grabbed her plate of spaghetti and meatballs, and gestured for her to get up. "I'll sort that out with her. Isn't that right, Scarlett? We have a schedule to plan.""Yes, Alpha Jax," she stood up. "Thank you for the meal, your majesties." She bowed, following behind me."Next time, you don't have to bow to them. You're my person, you came with me-""As an assistant," she interrupted me."As my assistant," I corrected her. "And as your employer, I believe I have the right to make clarifications regarding the things you do wrong, but of course, you can treat yourself so little if you wish to.""Why do you care? I'm just your employee," she laid emphasis on the last words."Just because," I sim

JAX:"With this ointment, the marks will quickly fade," the nurse at the infirmary said."Thank you."She blushed. "Yes, Alpha Jax.""If you're okay, we can go now." I turned to Scarlett, who sat examining her semi-bruised wrist."I'm okay." She stood and followed me as I led her to the car. My guards and chauffeurs were waiting, but I dismissed them, much to Scarlett's dismay.I knew she was dying to know why we were going alone, but instead, she remained quiet throughout the ride. I was making her uncomfortable, and I hadn't even tried to. Yet.I stopped in front of the building that caught my attention on our way to the palace. A luxury store for jewelry, accessories, and clothing.YARA; FOR WOMEN. A well-known popular clothing brand.Scarlett looked at me bewildered."Get down," I told her."Why are we here?" She finally said something."Because I want to be here," I replied. "What color was the dress Aaron gave you to wear to the party?""Floral green," she replied."I want to ge

SCARLETT :Alpha Jax had been acting entirely weird towards me in the last forty-eight hours, as if he had multiple personalities. After trying to explain why it would look weird not to wear what I had already accepted, I gave in to the breeze and let it carry me into an unconscious state that was disrupted by the feeling of someone's hand on my face."What are you doing?" My voice was almost inaudible due to our proximity."I was waking you up," he lied. No one wakes another person by touching their lips and cheek."By touching my lips and face?" I was conflicted by my inability to seduce him, but maybe I didn't have to try so hard. This was another chance. I just had to see if it would work."Would you be okay with me shaking you awake like an object?" he asked."No, there are many other ways," I replied, still speaking softly. I unbuckled my seat belt and leaned towards him to match the closeness of his body to mine. The car windows were tinted, ensuring no one could see inside.I

SCARLETT :"Scarlett," he called after me. "Stop walking." I continued."I'm going to drive away and leave you here. Is that what you want?"My heart tugged harder as the tears kept rolling. Like he cares. I moved as fast as I was able to.He was behind me, the next minute he wasn't. He was really going to leave. Water from nowhere fell on my nose. I was still crying, but I was damn sure those weren't from the salty waters of my eyes.I looked up to the sky and saw it begin to darken, like my life was only the shades of grey in the skies had meaning, purpose, and usefulness. The darkness in mine didn't.Just when I was lost, swarming in my thoughts, did I realize I was in the middle of the road, a loud speeding truck honked in my direction.I needed to move, or I'd die, yet I stood there. I mean, I wanted to run to avoid meeting an inevitable doom, but that seemed hopeless, not when I had watched someone dear to me pass away due to something similar. My aunt Darla, my father's sister.

SCARLETT :His warmth, in contrast to the cold weather, usually unmatched, made me want to open up. I knew the probability of him actually caring only existed in my dreams. He must've pitied me so much that he had to pretend to be extraordinarily affectionate, and I truly didn't mind. I'd take it if it was all I could get.I had no understanding of what this feeling was. Chances were it wouldn't count after I broke our bond, yet I wanted to sink myself into it."I was only nine," I began. "My twin and I were out with our Aunt, her name was Darla." I shifted, recollecting the memories. "She was exactly like the female version of my father. She was a hard worker, so she didn't come around much, and when she did, we would go out to the park, get ice cream. She was like that big older sister, only eighteen years older. On that day..."Alpha Jax stayed silent, but his gentle stroking of my hair gave me all the encouragement I needed. "We went to the park like we had always done. Some time

JAX:Days have been longer, times have been slower since Scarlett went into a coma. I had changed doctors over and over with the same results until I came to the conclusion that she just had to wake up. Perhaps, it wasn't the doctor; it could be the power that was granted to her. Whatever it was, it drained her completely, yet not enough to take her life. Thankfully, because I doubt I'd survive if that were the case.Every night after meeting upon meeting, I'd go to see her. It became my tradition, it became a must-do for me. Seeing her peacefully resting made me feel very much at peace. Hearing her breathe softly was also more than enough, seeing her steady heart rate on the monitor brought me a sense of security I could not fathom. Many lives were lost due to the attack, many properties were destroyed. Councilmen dead, elders of the pack dead, a lot wounded, a lot unscathed as well. Zharn suggested dedicating land to all those who did not survive the attack. Families who were okay w

HARRISON CAGE:"Forgive us, young master Cage, but we could not save your father," the doctor told me with a voice of sympathy. And I hated it.I did not need anyone's sympathy, and no one needed to sympathize with me over the death of a man who meant nothing to me.My father, Lord, Master, and Sir of the Harrison family. The man who accepted me, his bastard, because his own wife could not father a child.I watched as my stepmother, who I could not bring myself to stand, wailed and cried as people tried to steady her fake emotions. I bet she was plotting how much was in it for her in his will.I was supposed to visit Scarlett, who had remained unconscious for about two months now. The woman who brought me back into existence. I wish she didn't.My father was a strict man who lived by principles. His principles alone. He loved the dutiful life of being a master and wielding control over everything, including people's lives. Including my mother's, whom he deserted like she barely even e

SOPHIE:"What do I do with you now?" I sighed, giving in. That trickster. He knows how to make me fall for him like he's casting a spell."Take me back," he grins slyly while still managing to maintain the cuteness of a pup. I know you want to."Like I'd ever be able to not take you back," I grinned. "Never hide anything from me again. As your partner, I would love to share your pains and burdens. I deserve that much from you at least.""I'm sorry," he quipped."You don't have to apologize. I can't imagine how you must've felt about your former relationship," I said. "Did you try dating anyone after?""No," he shook his head as he gently stroked the back of my hand with his thumb, distracting me. "I could not bring myself to be close to any other woman after her. Not until you.""You make it sound like I'm that special," I chuckled nervously."Are you kidding?! You are the most special person in my life.""Hey, hey, keep it down. SOPHIE:"Stop being playful, I'm serious," I deadpanned."I'm sorry. I can't help it most of the time," he apologized."You've said 'I'm sorry' too many times in one day. I think we should stop with that for now.""Should we sit?" He asked me. "We have to talk."I strode to the bed and took off my flip-flops, not remembering where exactly I took off my heels. I sat down, letting the slit of my dress ride up.He cleared his throat after gazing at me for seconds. He sat next to me, placing his hand over mine."My parents will understand. We're not exactly like every other family. Everyone does things their way here," he explained."I noticed," I said in understanding."I wasn't going to keep her a secret forever. I meant it when I said I was going to tell you, but there was never a good time. First, we had on and offs, then the rogue attacks with your sister's condition, you being totally devastated—it broke my heart.""Zharn," I whispered."I mean it when I say that I love you," he loo

SOPHIE:I broke free from Zharn's arms to face his mother, who was taken by surprise."Zharn?" His mother diverted her attention solely to her son. "Did I hear you correctly?""Mother, I love her."And that was how I got totally caught up in a real-life soap opera.Kill me."You cannot be serious." She shook her head."Don't worry, Madam Meyers, he's definitely not being serious. You know your son, he plays around a lot." I mean, I wasn't lying. If Zharn was serious about me, he would have told me about Cleo or that someone he had a close relationship with in the past existed, but he didn't. Hence, I do not believe he's actually serious about us."No, I'm serious about Sophie," he declared."Don't waste the poor girl's time, Zharn. She's not one of those women from the clubs you frequent. Besides, you can't marry her."Ah, there it was. The truth, and like always, it stung like a bitch, especially when you don't want to hear it."No, he can marry her," his father, the Master of the Me

SOPHIE:"Outdated, you say?" She raised a brow."To us, the new generation," I nodded. "Yes.""My girls look pretty even if it's not the normal way," she looked back at me. "Find something elegant and not outdated. You will be styling just my hair. I want to be the only one to show off something modern. No one had ever given that opinion before.""I won't disappoint you. I promise," I said, excited."You better not," she said sternly."Yes," she then turned to leave.I examined my work one last time.Joy wanted her dark hair straightened, and it was. Anna wanted her hair not too curly, not too straight, and that was achieved. Tamara wanted to have light brown brunette hair curled at the end. I used a semi-permanent dye and Anna's luxurious hair kit. That thing would cost me at least three years of savings."Will you be able to help me get my hair done?" Amy pouted sadly."I'm not sure it's possible tonight. It's getting really late.""You can sleep over," Tamara offered. "We have lots

ZHARN:"When I said I was over Cleo, I meant it," I replied to him. "We were going to keep everything under wraps because Sophie knew you wouldn't approve of her.""Well, the young woman isn't wrong," he sat up straight. "She didn't save you during the rogue attack, did she?""She saved me before then, during, and now.""A woman willing to risk it all," he dragged an hm. "Allow me to test her.""You don't need to," I disagreed."It is the only way I can accept her. Lowborns are born homemakers so she might not cause any trouble. Is she educated?" Father asked me."She is, and she's planning to attend college as well. You can't be serious about testing Sophie. She's amazing -""She reads books meant for men," he interrupted me."Forgive me, father, but they never specified what gender those books were for," I retorted. "You have to stop gender specifying hobbies; times have changed, and only the nobles are stuck on the ways of the old.""Tradition must remain tradition, son. Without th

"Like father said, she's the glam child in the family.""Proudly," Anna said with great pride."Finish dinner first," our father instructed."Yes, father," they replied simultaneously."Now, let us hear about how you saved Zharn. He never quite got into detail."And we never thought of a story to give them. Sophie smoothly replied, telling them how I got stabbed instead of her in reverse. My father nodded attentively while my mother subconsciously teared up. It meant a lot to them. They'd hate to lose their only son."Thank you for saving our child," my father appreciated her once again. Once more in context, she did save my soul.Sophie lowered her head. "You don't have to thank me for doing anything.""No, imagine the scar the blade must have left on your skin. ZHARN:The war had left a scar on everybody, my girlfriend, best friend, and other people. It took Sophie a month to feel alive again. A part of her disappeared when she heard there was no telling when Scarlett would wake up. Jax was devastated too, as were all of us who knew her.We decided to keep her power under wraps and let people who saw what happened in the sky form their own opinions of the incident. It was a brilliant idea by Jax. If people knew, they would target Sophie and her parents and be all over them, which wasn't what she needed. None of us needed that.I was happier than ever the moment she began to emerge from the shell she had sunk herself into. Her well-being meant everything to me, and I wanted the same for her, to put her health and priorities first. My family was a tough one to crack. We were nobles of extra elites, and I mean extra in every sense. I needed Sophie to know what she was getting into since we weren't necessarily rushing anything. We belonged to ea
