“Sylvia! Where are you, little mouse?”
His thunderous voice startled me so bad. I dropped the mug I was holding. Coffee and broken pieces scattered all over the kitchen floor. I had just cleaned. Goddess, he will probably beat me for it.
“Why the hell don’t you answer when I call?” He glared at me with those red eyes, sneering. His bulk filled the door frame, blocking the light. His wolf was always present. I didn't believe he had a human side. No, I couldn't find anything human in Alpha Drake of the Black Crescent Moon.
I gulped. No matter what I did, he was always annoyed. “I umm…. You startled me, Alpha.”
He turned his attention to the mess on the floor. “Clean this shit up and bring me some coffee and a sandwich. Make it snappy, little mouse.”
I hurried to get a mop and a bucket. All the while I felt his eyes on me, making a shiver run down my spine.
Please just leave, please just leave. I repeated in my mind, hoping he would go to his office or anywhere. I knelt down to pick up the broken pieces.
“Come to my office when you’re done. I have a present for you.” Then he turned on his heel and left.
A present? Drake never gave presents. There will be a catch. I knew it. And it scared the hell out of me.
****
“Enter.”
He sat behind his desk, a pile of letters before him. He barely glanced at me. I put the mug and the sandwich down, careful not to spill anything. Then I waited, unmoving. I knew if I did, he would probably grab me. I detested his touch.
Eating the sandwich in two bites and watching me, a strange smile appeared on his face. The scar on the left side of his face lifted with his grimace, making him appear more wolflike. I grabbed onto the side of his large desk to steady my wobbly legs.
“This was good, little mouse. Are you eager to see your present?”
He came towards me and it took every ounce in me not to retreat. His hand on my cheek had my skin crawling in disgust.
“So beautiful.” his lips grazed the side of my mouth. “And you are all mine, aren’t you, little mouse?” he growled in my ear.
I didn’t want to say it. For four years he’s been abusing me, torturing me. I wanted to save myself for my soulmate, but he took it away from me. He took everything from me. My family, my friends, my pack and even my wolf.
The grip around my throat tightened. “Say it!” he snarled; those red eyes boring into mine. “Say it, Sylvia.”
“Yes, Alpha Drake.” I managed to croak. He shoved me against the wall.
“That’s not what I said. But never mind.” Drake released me. “You need to be taught a lesson, don’t you? A lesson in obedience.”
He went over to the where he kept his whips, chains and dog collars hanging. Oh please, no! I shook all over, feeling the tears spilling over on my cheeks. I fell to my knees, crying.
“Please, Alpha Drake, please not the whip. I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”
He grabbed one of the spiked dog collars from the hook on the wall. Grinning like a demon, he twisted my hair behind my neck. I whimpered in agony as he snapped the collar around my neck.
“That’s it, my disobedient bitch, stay on all fours like a good little dog.” He laughed and slapped me so hard on my bottom my teeth clacked together. He clicked a leash on the collar and dragged me to the couch. I had to crawl fast lest I ended up on my face.
He motioned to a gold-colored box on the couch. “Open it.”
I got up. Big mistake.
“Did I say you could get up, dog?” He pulled on the leash and I fell at his feet, hitting my face on his knee. I tasted blood.
“Now open it like a doggie, with your teeth.”
I tore at the silk ribbon covering it. Nudging the lid open with my nose, I found a dress inside, a ball gown. I couldn’t help but gasp as I looked at it. He pulled it out of the box, red satin and lace flowed through his fingers. It was gorgeous. I've never had anything so beautiful.
"Alpha?" I gawked at him in surprise. What was I supposed to do with this?
“So, what do you say to me, dog?” He lifted one of his heavy eyebrows in expectation.
“I… I… Thank you, Alpha Drake.” I said with my head bowed. Oh, please, please, don’t let him expect something else from me.
He grunted. “Fine, that’s good enough for now. You can show me your appreciation later.” He took the collar off, nudging me back with his booted foot. "Don't just stand there, go get dressed. You and I are going to the Spring Moon Banquet held by King Lucien of the Blood Fang pack."
He grabbed me by the arm and shoved me out the door. "Don't make me wait."
In my tiny room I held the gown to my body, wondering if this was a dream. Never in all this time has he taken me anywhere except to his bedroom or his torture chamber. I shivered. Could it be a trick? Some kind of elaborate way to hurt me?
I showered quickly and dressed. The gown fit perfectly. It hugged my body like a glove, the satin skirt flowed in soft folds to the floor. The bodice had a short-sleeved lace overlay, decorated with tiny sequins that glinted in the light. I brushed my shoulder length chestnut hair until it shone. Having no makeup other than a lip-gloss and some mascara, I had to make do with it.
Drake loomed in my bedroom; arms folded over his broad chest. He undressed me with his penetrating eyes. Even dressed as he was in a formal grey suit, his long black hair combed back in a low ponytail, he looked more feral.
“You look perfectly edible, little mouse.” Rough fingers caressed my back. “You can thank me later for your surprise.” His voice sent fear spiraling through my insides.
I can imagine what he would do to me and it will not be pleasant. Except for him it will be - he gets off on hurting me.
***
We arrived at King Lucien’s territory at twilight. Amazed at the magnitude of the palace I could hardly keep my mouth from dropping open. There were so many people, all dressed so smartly. Some of them were staring openly at Alpha Drake and myself. He kept a firm hand around my waist. I wondered what possessed him to bring me when he should have taken Victoria or one of his mistresses.
Backing myself into a niche beside a huge potted plant while Alpha Drake made conversation with another alpha, I took the opportunity to watch the elegantly dressed women. They looked stunning, making me feel self-conscious. I tried my best to hide the bruises Drake left on my neck using my hair. The gown had an open back and mine was covered in scars.
Drake loved using his whip whenever he felt I was being disobedient. The slightest thing could set him off. I tried to be careful not to annoy him, but he made me so nervous; I ended up making mistakes.
“Sylvia!” His voice boomed out over the chatter.
I jumped, nearly capsizing the plant next to me. “Alpha?”
Roughly he grabbed me by the elbow, dragging me along. I stumbled after him. “I need something to drink. Shit, I hate these social gatherings. Meaningless conversations with unimportant werewolves.” He grabbed two glasses of wine off a waiter, handing me one. “Here, drink up. It may make you less frigid. You’ll need it for what I have planned for you, little mouse.”
Just then there sounded a fanfare and the massive golden doors to the hall opened. King Lucien and his family made their entrance. Everyone in the room bowed down. I did too, not daring to look up. I heard the Alpha King welcoming all the different packs. Still, I kept my head down, awed by the presence of the royalty. King Lucien busy with his speech suddenly fell silent. Footsteps approached in our direction.
My heart beat out of my chest for some reason. People all around me started moving away. What is happening? Too anxious to move I stood frozen on the spot, head down. I saw a pair of black shoes right in front of me.
Alpha Drake muttered something incoherent. Ohhs and Ahhs rose from the crowd. A large hand lifted my chin. My eyes flew open. I drowned in golden brown pools staring at me.
My mate? Could it be? His scent, a mixture of citrus and musk filled my senses and I staggered back. Dear Goddess, this can’t be happening! Was this a dream? He smiled at me, making my knees weak and I felt sparks all over my body when he touched my hand.
He was the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on. Long blonde locks reached his broad shoulders, his face seemed as if it were carved out of marble.
“Mate. I’ve finally found you.” His deep masculine voice sent dangerous vibrations to my core.
“WHAT!” Alpha Drake stepped in front of me. “What did you just say?”
The young man glared at Drake and for a second his brown eyes flashed red. “Get out of my way, Alpha. She is my mate and she is coming with me.”
“Like hell, she is! Sylvia is mine. She is my slave.” Drake growled at the younger man, their noses almost touching. Both men’s fists were balled at their sides.
I started to shake. Drake will kill him. I just found him and Drake will kill him. I couldn’t dare go with him.
“Sylvia? Is that your name?” He turned to me, ignoring Drake. “Come with me, don’t be frightened.” He held out his hand to me.
I shook my head. My mouth refused to form words. I cringed when he tried to touch me. His eyes – they were turning red – just like Alpha Drake! He will hurt me! My knees gave out and I sank to the ground.
He frowned and went down on his knees beside me. I closed my eyes, waiting for him to hurt me. Instead, he gently held my face and I opened my eyes.
“Why are you so afraid, Angel?” He looked concerned. It was not something I was used to seeing on a man’s face. “I’m Hunter, Hunter Slater. You can come with me.”
Alpha Drake pushed him aside, grabbed my arm and pulled me upright.
“Enough! We are leaving.” Alpha Drake’s nails punctured the soft flesh of my arm. He dragged me away from Hunter.
Hunter leapt forward. He got hold of my wrist.
“I will rip you to shreds, Alpha Drake! Let go of my mate. NOW!” his voice boomed through the banquet hall. A tense hush fell over the room and all eyes turned to the scene enfolding.
SYLVIA I watched horrified as Hunter shoved Drake away from me. Drake’s incisors lengthened immediately. He roared his displeasure. Several howls followed. I covered my ears at the sound. The unmated wolves of the Black Crescent Moon began shifting. So did Hunter’s pack members. Most of the women fled the banquet hall. I wished I could as well. “Alpha Drake, I warn you for the last time. Step away from my mate. She no longer belongs to you.” Hunter’s muscles bulged underneath his suit. He ripped his jacket off and flung it away. His shirt followed and his trousers as well. He kicked off his shoes, one by one. Drake howl-laughed at him. The sound sent waves of terror coursing through me. “She’s your mate? My little bitch? You try and take her, I dare you.” Drake spat in contempt at Hunter. I needed to get away from them. I felt trapped. Hunter gro
HUNTERI held my trembling mate in my arms, carrying her like a child to my suite. Her head lay on my shoulder, she had her eyes closed tightly, hands clasped together in her lap. She didn’t hold on to me and I felt worried. Didn’t she feel the mate bond? I wouldn’t want to take my hands off her.I felt Blaze nudge forward in my mind.“Hunter, I don’t sense her wolf. She isn’t human, but I can’t find her wolf. This is bad.”I frowned, looking at her tense face. “Be patient, Blaze. I’m sure she is just hiding. Give it time. She doesn’t trust us.” It hurt us both to realize that, but given everything that happened tonight, I can’t really blame her. What a shit fest that was!“We would never hurt her. I would rip anyone’s throat out if they so much as look at her.” Blaze paced around in my mind. He was res
HUNTERI crashed into my bedroom. Did Drake manage to get to Sylvia? Blaze howled and clawed at my mind.Helen, one of my maids stood in the middle of my bedroom, eyes wide in panic.“I don’t know what happened, I swear. I didn’t hurt her.” she cried, wringing her hands.Sylvia sat huddled under my desk, her face against her knees, sobbing. A silk scarf lay on the floor. I turned on Helen. She shrank away in fear.“What. Did. You. Do.” I said, biting each word. “Speak!”“I… I just wanted to put a scarf around her neck. To hide those bruises and marks,” she explained. “I helped her bathe and change and… and…” Helen began to cry. “So many scars, so many…” she sobbed into her hands. My heart clenched at those words. “It’s a
SYLVIAI ran out of the room and the palace as fast as my legs could carry me. My mind reeled with the events of the night. All the blood, the violence, it was all too much. I needed to clear my mind. I inhaled the sweet night air, breathing in the smell of the forest. So peaceful.I sank down on the mossy ground by the silver lake. Staring at the moon’s reflection on the water, I wished my life would have been different. If only I had met Hunter sooner. The crickets’ song stopped abruptly. A twig snapped behind me. Before I could react, his scent enveloped my senses. Hunter. He reached for me and I fell into his arms. I couldn’t stop the tears from falling. Will he reject me like his father wanted? How cruel is the Moon Goddess? After all I have lost, will this be the ultimate loss? I will surely die.“Sylvia, don’t cry, my love.” Hunter pressed my head against his ha
SYLVIAHunter growled, a deep and guttural sound, his eyes glowing with lust. I hit him with my fists on his shoulders to make him let go of me. It made no impact on him.“Stop it! Stop it!”I screamed and cried, but he pinned me to the ground. He held my arms above my head. I could see his canines elongating. Why? What happened? I knew it was too good to be true. Men are all the same. They take and take. Woman are just objects to them, playthings to hurt. I struggled in vain underneath him. I could feel his hardness against my stomach.“Let me go, Hunter!” I wormed and squirmed underneath him. It only made him more excited.“Don’t deny me, Mate!” I hardly recognized his voice. This wasn’t Hunter, but his wolf. “Must mark you. Mine.” He pressed himself into my body. His blonde hair fell for
SYLVIAI fell onto Hunter’s bed, pressing my face into his pillow. His scent was everywhere. It both calmed me and made me feel restless at the same time. What was wrong with me? I suppose this is what the mate bond feels like. This is what he meant when he said I would feel it too, the need. The need to be with him. To feel his arms around me.But I don’t know if I could handle being intimate. I know he wants to more than anything and it scares me. It scares me to the point of terror. I pressed the pillow to my face and screamed into it. Frustrating, so damn frustrating.Jumping up from the bed I decided to take a bath, anything to clear my mind. Plus, I needed to get out of this bloody dress. I wanted to rip it off me, get rid of anything that reminded me of Drake. I went to the bathroom and again I felt lost in the luxury of it all. This tub could easily take two people. A floor length mirr
SYLVIAHe hovered over me on the bed, those long blonde locks framing both our faces. I wanted to run my fingers through them, draw him into me. But I was hypnotized by his amber eyes, locked onto mine.“Are you sure, Angel? Because once I start there would be no holding back.” He held onto my hands; fingers entwined. It felt right. This was where I belonged.“Yes.”I hardly mouthed the words when he came sweeping in, his lips crashed into mine, taking, demanding. Oh Goddess, I melted into him. He breathed life into me, life I thought I never had. I wanted him with every fiber in my body. My core pulsated with need.“Hunter…” I moaned as his mouth devoured my nipples one after the other. His hard shaft moved against my stomach and I ached to have him inside me. I lifted my legs around his waist.“My love, my
SYLVIA After breakfast the following morning Hunter introduced me to his Beta Joffrey and his mate Marcelle. Hunter arranged for us to go to the nearest town, Lyon, to do shopping. I haven’t been to a mall in such a long time that I felt anxious. Luckily Marcelle and I were of the same built as she had loaned me some of her clothes. I was glad to be rid of that red dress. Hunter told Hannah to burn it. I felt comfortable with Marcelle and Joffrey. They were devoted to each other, stealing loving glances and smiling frequently. Joffrey, a tall, dark, handsome man and Marcelle, petite and blonde they complemented each other. Joffrey and Hunter were childhood friends, Hunter told me. Joffrey was one of the people he trusted with his life. Hunter held me close to him in the car. Joffrey drove while Hunter and I sat in the back like two teenagers in love, holding hand
SYLVIA Home at last. Safe in my own bed with my handsome mate and my pups. All four of us cuddling together. Magnus held onto Hunter’s finger while sleeping at my breast and Nina lay in my free arm, snoring softly like a cat.“This is heaven.” Hunter smiled at me, his amber eyes glowing with a soft light. “I couldn’t ask for anything more than this, my Angel.”I couldn’t agree with him more, this was more than I ever wanted, my own family with the one I loved. I felt complete. He kissed me gently, careful not to disturb his sleeping son.“Don’t ever leave me again, Love.” I whispered to him. “I couldn’t live without you, you know. Promise me we would die together.” I thought about Marcelle and how Joffrey’s life ended. The horrible sight was never far from my mind.Hunter tapped me on the nose. “Stop it. We’re going to grow old together and fill this castle with our offspring.” He winked, “And we do have a lot of rooms.”I laughed softly. “That’s what you say now. Remember how much t
SYLVIA“Let’s go.” I said, running toward the open mausoleum. Hunter grabbed my arm and pulled me back.“I go first.” He was taking no arguments.“Wait!” Selena snapped. “You need protection.”Rebecca held her hands out in front of her and a shimmering light shot out from her fingertips and surrounded Hunter and me. It formed a bubble around us. I touched it and it moved with my hand without bursting. It was cold to the touch.“That ought to last a while. It will hide you from them. Be quick.” Rebecca urged us on.“She probably knows we’re here already. Do you have the wand?” I heard him ask Selena as we moved towards the gate.“Yes.” Selena said.I didn’t look back. Hunter held my hand, and we went inside. The stench of death and decay made me gag. We walked in silence down the narrow passage. Debris and old broken coffins lay strewn about, the bones long gone. A large stone sarcophagus stood in the middle of the crypt.“Look there’s something underneath it.” Hunter said and he moved
SYLVIAHis crib was empty. I could still smell his newborn scent. I ran from the room down the passage, colliding with Tasha.“Luna Sylvia, what is it? You shouldn’t be running around like this.”I grabbed her by the shoulders. “She took Magnus! She took my baby!”“Who?”“Aldine! We must find them, Tasha. She’s taken him to Joffrey.” I was in such a state I couldn’t think properly.“I’ll alert the castle guards.” I watched Tasha’s eyes turn opaque while she sent a mind link to the guards.I rushed to King Lucien’s rooms, not caring that I wasn’t properly dressed, and it was not proper for me to go to another male’s room in the middle of the night.King Lucien opened the door to my insistent hammering. I fell into his arms, babbling incoherently and crying.“Gods, Sylvia! Whatever has gotten you into such a state?” He pulled me away from him and held me at arm’s length. I didn’t even notice Tasha had followed me. She stood in the doorway.“She took him, Father. They took my son to the
HUNTER As soon as the alpha wolf submitted, the whole pack followed. It was not my intention to take over the pack, but I had no choice. They accepted us, welcoming us into the pack with whines, displays of submissions and licking our faces.“This is so gross, but so awesome.” Teo said through our mind link.“There’s no telling how they would react if we should return to our human form.” I was worried about the young alpha. He would have to take his pack back when we leave, and it won’t be easy for him.“What would King Thorin do when we arrive at his village with a real wolf pack?” Teo laughed.I didn’t think the wolves would go that far though it may be out of their territory. The pack moved higher up the mountain and we followed. They led us to their den, a large opening between two rocks – it could hardly be called a cave. There were a few cubs and omegas, the lower ranks looked after the pups. At first, they were wary of us, but soon welcomed us and the pups sniffed at us, being
SYLVIANo, this can’t be happening now. The baby was coming, and Hunter wasn’t here. I was not ready!“Just breathe, Sylvia. Breathe.” Selena grabbed hold of my hands.“I can’t… give birth now…” I panted and cried out when the contractions racked my body.“You have no choice! This pup wants out. Work with me, Sylvia. Breathe.” Selena turned to Arno. “Call the King. Now.”Arno rushed from the room.“Why?” I asked. Why did she call for King Lucien. I needed my mate. Then I remembered the horrible vision. He was in danger far from here.“Be strong, Sylvia. For your child’s sake. Now push!” she demanded.I howled in pain as another contraction made me bend backwards. The door burst open, and I sensed King Lucien, followed closely by Tasha and Aldine.King Lucien grabbed my hand. “You’re doing fine, my child. We’re here for you.”Pressing down on his strong hand I looked up into his blazing blue eyes. He smiled down at me, wiping my sweat drenched hair from my face.“Father, Hunter is in d
HUNTERI was bored out of my mind. Will this day never end? Gods! Some of these Alpha’s were like old women, carrying on and on about things and not coming to a point. Teo fell asleep at some stage, head thrown back and mouth agape, snoring softly. He had partied himself to exhaustion with the unmated she-wolves. Lucky bastard.Feeling spiteful, I kicked the chair from under him and he crashed to ground amidst raucous laughter. Blushing a deep red, he picked himself up, righted the chair and mumbled an apology.King Thorin chuckled. “Looks like our she-wolves kept you up all night, young Teo. I thought the Blood Fang pack’s warriors had more stamina?”Teo for once was tongue-tied.“He needs more practice.” I said, winking at the king.Teo smiled sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck with one hand.***The meeting went well, new alliances were formed, and some old issues were resolved. Kane pulled me to the side while the others went back to the feast.“I hope you don’t mind, Hun
SYLVIA I received countless messages and photos from Hunter, saying he was so bored, but it looked like he was having a great time. The photos he sent were of people dancing, tables laden with all sorts of food and drink. They were busy wrapping up the Alpha Meeting, but the party was still going on until the end of December. My phone rang in the middle of the night. It was him.“Hunter?” I breathed, half asleep.“I miss you.” His voice slurred.“Are you drunk?” I asked laughing.“Maybe.”Werewolves don’t get drunk easily.“They have no end. These people are in party mood, and they don’t take prisoners,” he groaned.I giggled; I can’t imagine him being drunk. I’ve seen him slightly tipsy when he drank too much Absinthe and then he was horny as hell.“Are you alone?” I asked, a little apprehensively. There better not be another she-wolf after him.He laughed softly, “Of course, Angel. Teo is having a blast here. He’s proving to be a huge hit with the she-wolves here. So funny.” His
HUNTERGetting on that plane was one of the hardest things I had to do. This annual Alpha meeting couldn’t have come at the worst time. At least I get to see Kane. But leaving my angel behind especially with everything we went through drove a knife in my heart.I will make it up to her, I promised myself. At least Father was there, and I had more confidence in the witches to protect her. Selena assured me the castle grounds were well protected that no supernatural force was going to break through. I believed her because I saw how powerful they were. It helped assuage the guilt I felt for leaving.Teo babbled non-stop on about the gods knew what. I tuned him out, lost in my own thoughts. Thinking about Sylvia clinging to me and crying like she was never going to see me again. I was worried about her. Could be the effects of what happened, I tried to reason her behavior away. Or maybe just the pregnancy hormones affecting her. I sent a text to Selena to keep an eye on her and maybe give
SYLVIAWinter was upon us. The days were colder and grey as December drew near. Not that cold ever bothered us. I watched from my windows as the clouds rolled in low over the grounds. Winter always made me restless, and I longed to be out there with the wind in my hair and the scents of forest around me.“Will it snow, Mama?” Nina danced around the room. She spent a lot of time with me here in the castle as Hunter refused to let me go out.“I don’t know, Nina.” I smiled at my little princess who seemed to be growing up way too fast. She was turning into a formidable little fighter as well, according to Tasha who trained her diligently. Tasha adored Nina and Nina adored her right back.“I hope it will. I love snow.” She announced, spinning dizzyingly around and around until she fell at my feet, giggling and out of breath.“Oh, you do? Well, let’s hope it does so we can build a snowman.” I knew it probably won’t snow, but you never know…Hunter came to check up on me. He kissed me deepl
