Chapter 7 - The Calling
Athena POV
After a short but quiet night of sleep and a fast-paced morning, I was finally able to sit down and breathe. I knew after lunch I would be training with Alpha Erik. Yet, my mind kept flashing back to last night. How much I wanted to touch him and test how far I could go. The thought of all of it caused my cheeks to flush the lightest shade of pink. I craved the sensation his touch gave me. I didn't know what I was going to do, but I had to have his touch. Something was pulling me to him.
"Earth to Athena.. where'd you go?" Greta asked, snapping me from my thoughts.
"Oh, sorry, just the lack of sleep is catching up to me." I lied. "I can't wait to be done this night shift. I know I pissed him off, but he could have just tortured me instead of having me clean up the whole packhouse. It's honestly disgusting. I'll never look at the other wolves the same." I said, pretending to shiver at the thought.
"Yeah, that's pretty disgusting. I've heard he's done a lot worse. So consider yourself lucky." Greta laughed.
"He's also the best warrior in the pack and in his family, so training with him is going to be intense. I feel sorry for you. It's even crazier how he became Alpha." Greta's voice was full of excitement as she spoke.
"What do you mean how he became Alpha?" I asked, "I thought you were born into it or married into it."
"Yeah, you usually are, but only the firstborn is Alpha usually ... but not Alpha Erik. He is the youngest of three siblings. His brother Phillip is the oldest and was supposed to be Alpha. One of the pack members told me that the White Wolf in the family is always the Alpha and usually the firstborn who possesses it. But for some reason, Phillips wolf wasn't white, which caused so much confusion. So they waited until the second born, Cassie, could shift, and it wasn't her either. So Finally, when Alpha Erik could shift, they were shocked to see that he possessed the White wolf." Greta's eyes lit up as she told me the story. She was one who always loved tales and drama.
"That must have been hard on his brother. To be trained his whole life as an Alpha only to have it taken from him." I said softly
"Yeah, apparently, they have been against each other ever since. Especially when Phillips's mate ended up being Alpha Erik's girlfriend, she turned eighteen before him, and everyone thought they would-be mates, but they were wrong." For some reason, the mention of him being with someone else irritated me. I shook the thought from my head as I continued to listen to Greta.
"Sad really to think that even though they're family, they probably harbour so much hate towards each other, both taking what the other wanted." Greta shook her head. "He still hasn't found his mate either. He's twenty-three, and he hasn't had any luck. So it makes sense that he's so ruthless. I couldn't imagine not having Tom." Her voice grew quiet before she smiled again.
"I hope you find your mate as soon as you can too. Waiting that long is enough to drive any of us mad." She laughed
"Yeah, me too. The faster I can get out of the packhouse and far away from Alpha Erik's wrath, the better." I laughed
We chatted for a bit longer and then headed in for lunch. After lunch, We headed into the change rooms of the gym. I couldn't stop myself from thinking about last night. Knowing he still hadn't mated and how much pain he must have felt losing the one he thought was destined to be his. His loss made me think of my father and how he found his mate but lost her. No one deserves a fate so cruel. I closed my locker and put on a black sports bra and spandex shorts. I tossed my scarlet hair in a ponytail and followed Greta out to the gym. It looked so different in the daytime. The light shined through the windows making the white walls even brighter than before.
I heard someone clear their throat, and my attention was drawn to the front of the gym. There stood our Alpha the way the light hit him showed off his form perfectly. His emerald green eyes sparkled in the light. His muscle shirt was filled by his broad chest, his shirt hugging perfectly against his abs. My eyes trailed down his body to his shorts. They hugged his legs perfectly. My face started to turn red as I returned to his face seeing him staring right at me. His eyes were slightly darker as a smirk appeared on his face for a second before turning cold again. I immediately looked down, hiding my face wishing my hair was down to cover my flushed cheeks.
"We will be splitting up into partners today. Working on our adaptability. Switching partners every half hour." Alpha Erik said, his voice full of power. "Remember to focus on your weaknesses, become aware of them and correct them. You are to help each pack member grow stronger. We never favour one move or side. We must be able to protect ourselves and show no weaknesses to our enemies. "Eriks voice sharp as he spoke
"Beta Drake will be walking around to help with anything you need. I will be sparing with one member of the pack today." Erik's voice shifted, sounding more sly. I could feel his eyes on me. I slowly looked up to meet his gaze.
"Athena, you will be my partner today." My stomach dropped as soon as he said it. I knew it was coming, but I thought he might change his mind. Beta Drake had a huge smile on his face as he looked at me. The other pack members moved aside so I could walk towards him. Their eyes were weary as they watched me approach my death sentence.
"You're all to begin; your thirty minutes starts now," Erik ordered. Everyone bowed their heads and partnered up. Starting their training, not even giving Alpha Erik and me a second glance.
"Did you train in your other pack?" Erik asked, snapping me away from the thoughts.
"Did we train? What kind of she-wolf does he think we are." Phoenix snapped
"Hush, Phoenix, I need to focus. I want to walk away from this," I growled at her.
"Of course I trained, after my father.." I stopped myself before continuing. "I trained once I was moved to the packhouse," I said, my voice coming out sharp as I tried to hold back the anger that flashed through me. Before this, I never realized how angry I felt about my father's death. He died fighting against Alpha Erik's pack.
"Perfect, then we don't need to go over anything. Let's begin." His voice was coming out softer than before. A slight hint of happiness formed as he spoke. He took his shirt off and got into position.
"Well, hello there." Phoenix squealed as her excitement flooded my mind. Then, before I could even react, I felt a fist connect with my stomach, throwing me to the ground. I let out a sharp grunt as I slammed into the mat.
"God damn it, Phoenix, keep your thoughts to yourself, please. I'm already having a hard time focusing as is." I snapped
"Well, I mean, come on. How fair is it that we have to stare at that while we fight." Phoenix said, her voice full of excitement. I glared at her in response. "Fine, I'll focus. Let's kick his ass, or at least die trying." She laughed. I rolled my eyes at her as I got back up, putting all my focus onto Alpha Erik.
"Thought you said you trained," Erik said, his voice full of amusement.
"Lucky shot," I grunted as I let the pain from his hit pass. His cockiness pissed me off.
He went forward, trying to hit me again. I dodged his fist. I Spun around quickly, delivering a hard kick to his side. It barely fazed him.
"You're a fast one, but I won't let that happen again." He laughed
"Are we going to talk all day, or are you going to fight." I snapped. Shock flashed through me as I didn't mean to come off that hard. My anger got the best of me. His eyes darkened as he looked at me. I just signed my death wish.
"Very well." He said before swinging at me again. I dodged his next blow but didn't anticipate his leg as it swung up and hit me in the back, sending me flying forward. I let out another grunt as I slowly stood up.
We continued to fight, I would get the odd hit, but he was fast for his size and exceptionally skilled. He definitely earned his title as Alpha. I had hardly noticed the gym was empty, with only a few members staying behind to watch us continue. For a brief second, I looked away; he connected his fist with my side. I fell forward, my face hitting the ground. The taste of blood hit my tongue. I stood up, wiping the blood from my nose, turning around to meet his gaze. I was so mad he got me again. I had to get another blow in, one that counted. His eyes scanned my face; a flash of worry crossed his eyes as he looked at the blood. I ran towards him he threw another punch. I ducked and slid on my back between his legs. Before he had a chance to turn around and react, I kicked the back of his knee in, causing him to lose his balance. Just as I went to connect my fist to the side of his face, his hands shot up, grabbing my arms. He threw me over his shoulder onto the ground and pinned me down.
"I think we're done for today, Sweetheart." He said, his voice soft and a victorious smile on his face. The way he spoke to me sent shivers down my spine, and his smile made my heart skip. I wasn't angry anymore, just existing in his presence. Then, someone cleared their throat, snapping us both from each other's gaze. Only to have Beta Drakes stupid smirk greeting us as we looked up.
"That was one hell of a show. Can't wait to see what you do tomorrow." Beta Drake said, his voice full of amusement. "It's seven. You guys missed dinner. I had the cooks put some aside for you both. I figured it was going to be a long night."
"It's seven," I said frantically. "Crap, I have to get ready for my shift," I said, almost falling over as I stood up. I felt Alpha Erik's hands grab my hips to steady me. The same tingling feeling shot through my body, causing me to jump. I looked over at Alpha Erik to see he had unwrapped his hands, so his skin was touching mine.
"You are excused from your duties tonight. After a fight like that, you need to eat and get your rest." Alpha Erik spoke, his voice soft but cautious as he looked at me, letting go of my hips.
"Thank you, Alpha," I said as I bowed my head to him. I looked up to see Beta Drake watching us with a smile on his face as he watched how close Alpha Erik stood to me—causing my face to flush.
"Go have a shower, and I will meet you in the dining room." Alpha Erik instructed as he stepped back from me.
"You're going to have dinner with me, don't you have more important things to do," I asked. My eyes widened as I realized what I had said. I could hear Drake stifle a laugh.
"Nothing is more important than gaining our strength after a fight. That's the best fight I've had in a while. You definitely have some skill." He said a small smile on his face.
"Th...thank you, Alpha." I stuttered as I tried to collect my thoughts. My face was extremely red at this point. I put my head down and ran to the change room to shower.
"I wonder if he will join us," Phoenix smirked as she spoke.
"You are a serious perv." I laughed as I turned on the shower. I stripped off my clothes and let the hot water hit my body. My muscles instantly relaxing as the water soothed their aches.
"He's so gorgeous it's hard not to be. There's just something about him." Phoenix said dreamily.
"You got that right. Those sparks he causes when he touches us make it almost impossible to concentrate." I said, "No one has ever done that before. Do you think that's because my birthday is soon? That may be every unmated male's touch will feel like that." I asked, my voice full of wonder as I rinsed out my hair and turned off the shower.
"I hope not, but we could always try touching someone else and see if it happens with them." I nodded in agreement to Phoenix.
I walked to my locker and grabbed a change of clothes. A blush crossing my cheeks as I thought about last night and not having a change of clothes. I slid on a red tank top and a pair of ripped jeans. I looked at my face in the mirror. The swelling was gone, and just small red marks remained. One of the bonuses to being a werewolf was how fast we healed. Once I could fully transition into my wolf form, I would heal much faster and be so much stronger. I turned to the door and walked out towards the house. Once inside, I headed to the dining room. My stomach was in knots, knowing I had to see Alpha Erik again.

Chapter 8 - Hunger As I walked into the dining room, two plates sat on the table, one at the head of the table and the second next to it. I was pleased to see I was the first to arrive. It gave me time to calm the knot in my stomach and reel in Phoenix's over baring thoughts. "You be careful tonight. We don't need to find out what Alpha Erik meant when he said we would have consequences," Phoenix smirked. "You are so unbelievable." I scoffed "I just say what we're both thinking." Phoenix huffed. "Just imagine what it would feel like to have him." She said dreamily, sending flashes of what she thought through my head. My fingers entang
Chapter 9 - Protection I slammed my fist on my desk. "Damnit, Paul, why wasn't I informed of this. When I asked you about past treaties and attacks, you never thought this was something that needed to be mentioned." I growled. "What is it that she wants," I demanded. "I was ordered not to mention it to anyone. Even after Alpha Hues passed, I honoured his command." His voice was low and full of regret. "The Fae told us a story of a wolf. One with unlimited power, its fur so dark it glowed blue in the light. She believes that one of our pack members has this wolf and is waiting for the wolf to come of age. She demanded that Alpha Hues inform her as soon as it happened. He refused to help her, so she infected him. We told her that the
Chapter 10 - Ceremony Athena POV After dinner, I was left feeling even more confused about Erik than before. It left me with a night full of staring up at the ceiling. As the sun started rising and a new day had started, I rolled out of bed unrested and unable to soothe the knot in my stomach. Before I could even get fully dressed, there was a knock at the door. "One second," I shouted. I slipped on my burgundy sports bra, a loose white Tee and burgundy leggings. I opened the door to see Alpha Erik standing there. My eyes widened as I stared at him, and my heart started racing beyond my control. His face was hard as he looked like he had a night without sleep as well. I roamed his face as I looked at his chiselled jaw and his eyes dark with emerald sp
Chapter 11 - Nightmares "Unbelievable," I shouted in frustration as I turned from the door. I turned around to look at the room I was now stuck in. My eyes widened as I looked around the room. In the middle of the room was a four-poster bed. There were two doors, one that led to a bathroom and another that led to a closet bigger than any closet I ever had. It was fully stocked with clothes for every event. The room was bright, with white walls and pops of gold throughout. When I walked into the washroom, my eyes landed on a huge soaker tub and a walk-in shower. A large mirror that spread across the wall. "I have never had anything so beautiful in my life. There has to be a mistake. I'm sure Beta Drake just put us in the wrong room." I said to Phoenix
Chapter 12 - Pleasure Athena POV "I can't believe we're doing this." I groaned as I got out of bed. Phoenix stayed silent as I approached his door. "If he doesn't answer the first knock, we're turning around and going back to bed," I said, more to myself than her. "Whatever you say," Phoenix laughed. Her excitement was twisting my stomach in knots. I reached up to the door and tapped gently, hoping he didn't hear it and I could retreat to my warm and safe bed. I waited a moment before letting out a sigh of relief and disappointment. I didn't know why I let her talk me into coming, but at the same time, she didn't really have to do much convincing.
Chapter 13 - Awakening Unknown POV "I know where the child is. It's only a matter of time before they shift. Once their wolf emerges, we will take them." She laughed. The thought of all the power she would gain if she successfully captured my daughter was horrifying. But I had to hope she was ready and trained well enough to see through it all and claim her rights to the throne. "You will never win, Dela. I won't let you use my child for evil." I spit at her. She smacked my face scratching my cheek with her nails. My body has become numb to the pain I've endured throughout the years. I didn't give her the satisfaction of witnessing any reactions. Instead, I looked up at her and smiled, earning myself a punch to the stomach. She laughed as I grunted from the force of her
Chapter 14 - Lies Athens POV I was in and out of consciousness the whole walk back to the packhouse. Being with Alpha Erik made the pain tolerable. My body had already sweated out the sedative he gave me. I was coated in a thick layer of sweat, and my muscles were shaking from exhaustion. I couldn't make out anything anyone was saying. The pain demanded all my attention. Even Phoenix was having trouble snapping me out of my trance. I felt the warmth leave me and was replaced with a cold surface. My body welcomed the cold as it was overheated. It wrapped around my body like kisses from the winter skies. I was too lost to the discomfort to realize that I was now naked. The cold was slowly replaced with heat as the sheet was placed on top of me. My skin
Chapter 15 - Second Wave "Athena, wake up." I heard someone whisper into my ear. I slowly opened my eyes. A girl with a warm smile greeted me. "I'm so happy to meet you finally..." she said excitedly, her voice soft as she gently cupped my cheek with her hand. "Where am I? Who are you." I asked, dazed. Last I remembered, I was in the shifting room alone. Now I was in an empty room. With a girl I had never seen before. Her hair was long and the colour of lavender. Her skin was fair, and her eyes were as bright as the blue sky. "I've been waiting a long time to meet you. It isn't easy being locked away. Phoenix had no problem reaching you, but I couldn't break down your walls." She huffed before laughing at
Epilogue Three weeks later Damon The pressure of the crown was building as Alora and I settled into our new roles. My father was no longer here to keep the council at bay with their demands. But despite it all, I had found that I enjoyed this new life I had been given. The new responsibilities allowed me even more control over the Kingdom than the Captain of the guards ever could. All be it; I did miss the battle prep and daily training. But I still found holes in my busy schedule to take Alora out to the training fields at least once a week. I knew that eventually, our routine would become steady, and we would have more time to relax, but new rulers came with change and to have change, you needed to vote on old and new laws to pass. Alora and I had already made some big changes, like incorporating technology from the human realm into our daily lives to allow us easier communication with other realms. But there were still a lot of issues with the old ways of running our Kingdom
Chapter 49 - To Love and Cherish ErikPeace was something that was talked about constantly. During wars, it was what we fought for. While ruling a Kingdom, it was what we strived to maintain. But I had never truly known peace until now. The thought of finally being ridden of this pain inside of me, knowing that soon I would be with my love once again, was freeing. The final night with my family started out slow, but it eventually picked up and ran right into the night. There was laughter and tears exchanged around the table as we shared stories of my past and everyone got a chance to say goodbye, getting the closer they needed. And as everyone turned in for the night, I found myself alone again; unable to sleep, I found myself outside. I stayed up looking out at the stars waiting for the sun to rise. I closed my eyes, letting the warm breeze brush across my skin, engraving it into my mind. "So you really are going to spend your last moments alive, sitting in a field of flowers like
Chapter 48 - GoodbyesErikI watched as the sun set beyond the forest, the oranges and pinks of the sky blending together as the sun bid it farewell. It had been a long time since I had nothing to do, no responsibilities with the crown or of the guards. I thought it might help me move on from the hell that the last year had been without Athena, but now I realize that was a stupid notion. It was lonely, and the weight of losing my mate weighed heavier on my heart now than it did while I still ruled.I kept as busy as a retired King could, helping Damon when he needed to seek council or helping Apollo if he needed a hand with training recruits, but I knew that they both didn't really need my help. They just didn't want me to feel left out. Apollo was a natural at his role, and so was Damon. Despite what Damon said when he first discovered he would be the next in line to inherit the throne. He took to it as a bird took to the sky. He was a born leader and shined when he was in control o
Chapter 47 - Home Alora It had been a month since I had been crowned Queen of Gardenia, the days seeming to slip away as the kingdom welcomed the summer solstice and our ruling.I was busy learning my new role, Damon's father and Grandfather helping ease us both into the important roles we both now held. However, it was easier having Helga by my side. I was happy to have her as my royal advisor, and Rachel had said she was a natural already. I knew she would be, though; she always loved to take control and never gave up the opportunity to tell someone off. It was also working in my favour because Lord folic was so busy fighting with her that he always missed out on voting for new laws or changes to existing rulings. Damon loved it, and it made the council meetings less gruelling. It was absurd how many times we had to have a council meeting. At least once a day, and most of the things brought up were trivial problems. By the end of the day, I was just happy to get some alone time
Chapter 46 - The CrownDamon It felt like an eternity had passed as I waited in the royal chambers with my father. It felt even longer when we exchanged goodbyes at the throne room, and I waited at the dais while he sat on his throne. Melody stood in front of my father, a smile stretched across her face, glowing brightly. The room was full of people, some from the council, others from royal families, friends, family, and people from our Kingdom. All watching and waiting for the ceremony to begin.I was in a black royal jacket that was made with silver threading, and our family crest stitched into my left breast pocket. The wolves were placed proudly amongst the roses and the sword that separated them as they howled at the moon. My silver crown was placed on my head, but that would be changed once mine and Alora's vows were complete and only after the mothers accepted us as the new King and Queen to signal the dawn of a new era. Drake stood to the right of me, his mate, my mother's
Chapter 45 - Long Live The Queen Damon "Again," I commanded as Alora worked to keep the wings she had summoned to remain on her back. She had learned quickly how to handle the phoenix flames since she had already worked with the fire element. But now came the hard part, only half shifting. I did it all the time, especially in battle, morphing my nails into claws and elongating my canines. But nothing about that was easy; it came with time and practice, but Alora wanted to have it mastered. With the coronation and our mate ceremony happening tomorrow, she wanted to be better at it. Not only to prove to the council and our people that she was a worthy Queen but also to herself. I didn't want to be the one to tell her to slow down, not after she had spent so much of her life ruled under someone else thumb. But I had warned her of the risks of exhaustion and told her that when I saw fit, we would end the training for the evening.Alora begrudgingly accepted my condition, and I kept tr
Chapter 44 - Worship AloraI flipped through the pages of the phoenix book the jinx family had kept for generations. There was so much to process, like what abilities I now possessed because of what I was. It made my head hurt; there was so much to learn, so much to figure out. I was now different than normal fae; I was now a shifter. But, unlike most shifting fae, my order didn't communicate with me. Instead, it was a part of me; we were one and the same. I would still live an immortal life, only having one enemy that could stop me from ever being reborn, permanently ending my life. A Basilisk. A venous snake shifter that, like me, was rare, most believed them to be extinct. But now that I existed, one would be born, if not already—the universe now having to find balance in all forms. It was mindblowing the things I had already read about. For example, I could enchant items with my flames, similar to everlasting fire. But unlike everlasting fire, I couldn't break wards or spells w
Chapter 43 - WarningDamonI sat at the dais, my legs hanging over the edge as I waited for Cedric to arrive with the artifacts Alora and I asked for. Balor was right when he said the Jinx family would bargain for their priceless information. The smug look on their faces was wiped away and replaced with wide gaping mouths as they stared at the amulet in shock.Diana had muttered a curse under her breath. One I was sure she wanted me to hear because she said it so close to me. But I bit my tongue as I handed over the amulet, not wanting to risk them being stingy with their end of the deal.Alora was waiting in the Library, looking over whatever other books Audra had found for her. Now that Alora had her dream magic again, she was more determined than ever to find out what else she was capable of doing. I couldn't help but admire her for her devotion and eagerness. I was still reeling in from the mind-blowing realization that not only was Alora a rare Pheonix shifter, but she was also
Chapter 42 - Full CircleAloraIt's funny how even after you have overcome your deepest fears that they can still creep up on you. That was how it felt right now, anyways, as we arrived at the Dream realm. It was a ghost town, everyone seeming to either vanish with my mother's magic or flee as soon as they were freed from their promise to her. The streets were quiet, the ports empty, and the palace looked haunted. The golden paint was already losing its shine and fading with the faded magic. The windows were dark and unwelcoming as we approached the not-so-gilded gate. It was now that I felt the fear of my mother creep up on me. The well of my fears bubbled in the pit of my stomach. For decades I walked through these gates and made my way to my mother's throne room to report my findings and give her the things she requested I steal. The motions all felt so familiar, but with Damon by my side, they also felt different. I knew he could sense my hesitation as we approached the giant w
