Chapter 8 - Hunger
As I walked into the dining room, two plates sat on the table, one at the head of the table and the second next to it. I was pleased to see I was the first to arrive. It gave me time to calm the knot in my stomach and reel in Phoenix's over baring thoughts.
"You be careful tonight. We don't need to find out what Alpha Erik meant when he said we would have consequences," Phoenix smirked.
"You are so unbelievable." I scoffed
"I just say what we're both thinking." Phoenix huffed. "Just imagine what it would feel like to have him." She said dreamily, sending flashes of what she thought through my head. My fingers entangled in his hair. His warm lips pressed against my neck as his hands wandered my body, making their way down.
I was snapped out of my trance by someone clearing their throat. My eyes flew open, meeting alpha Erik's gaze, my face growing red. I gripped my thighs tighter as I tried to keep any scent of arousal from the air. Werewolves had a keen sense of smell, and a female's arousal drove all the unmated males crazy.
"Alpha Erik, you finally made it." The words left my mouth before I could stop it. My eyes widened as I examined his expression. A small smirk spread across his face as he looked at me.
"I see you waited for me to eat." He said as he approached his seat. I stood up to bow, only sitting back down once he had been seated. "Such an obedient pup when you want to be." He said, his voice sending out a mocking tone.
"What's that suppose to mean," I said sharply. Again my mouth opened before I could catch myself.
"Thought you didn't want to find outthe consequences ." Phoenix laughed. I rolled my eyes at her.
I heard a laugh from the corner of the room. I didn't even notice Beta Drake standing at the entrance of the dining room.
"She's definitely a feisty one," he laughed.
"Careful, Athena, you might get yourself into some trouble. Alpha likes them spicy." I heard a low growl erupt from Alpha Erik's chest. Causing me to turn to him, my eyes met his. They were dark with emerald swirls. His wolf was present again.
"Okay, I get it, touchy subject." Beta Drake said, raising his hands as if to surrender. "Sorry to bother you, Alpha, but I just needed to remind you we need to head out soon to hunt for tomorrow's ceremony."
"Ceremony," I questioned, not remembering any mention of it.
"I'm assuming Drake didn't tell you." Alpha Erik said, giving Drake a pointed look.
"We will be holding our pack ceremony tomorrow. You along with your pack will be welcomed into ours, sealing our bond officially becoming a part of the Bloodstone pack." I smiled in response, nodding as my stomach twisted. Soon Alpha Erik could get into my thoughts and be in my head.
"It's quite an experience; we need the deer's blood to complete the ceremony. Sharing the blood of the kill unites the pack." Alpha Erik spoke, his voice sounding soft. He looked up at Beta Drake again.
"We will head out after dinner. Is there anything else?" He asked.
"No, sir, I'll leave you two alone." Beta Drake shot me a wink as he turned and left the room. A blush ran across my cheeks. I looked down at my plate and started eating to distract myself.
"Tell me more about yourself." Alpha Erik asked, his voice breaking the silence. I looked up at him. His gaze set on me.
I cleared my throat before speaking. Trying to steady my heart rate before speaking. "What do you want to know?"
"Well, all I know about you is you have poor impulse control and tried to run when I claimed your pack. So really anything would be great." His face was emotionless, and I couldn't tell what he thought. His Emerald eyes stared into my soul as I looked at him. I couldn't think when I looked at him. Something always seemed to be pulling me closer to him and causing me to lose all sense of control. I cleared my throat, returning my focus to my meal.
"I am an only child. I never knew my mom. She was killed while out on patrol when I was young. My father raised me with the help of Beta Paul and a few other pack members. My father he.." I paused for a minute, trying to fight back the tears; anger washed over me. I could see Alpha Erik's face change as he watched me.
"He died three months ago fighting against your pack." I spit out. I could feel Phoenix's sadness stir inside me too. I suddenly felt a warm tingle run up my arm. Its waves of electricity calmed me down. I looked down to see Alpha Erik's hand on mine. He had taken the fork from my hand and placed it on the table. His eyes were full of compassion as he stared at me. Full of understanding. I pulled my hand away, placing it on my lap.
"I'm sorry that your father died in our battle. It was never my intention to start a war with your pack. There are a lot of things you don't know. Before the war, we had been working on joining our packs peacefully. Unfortunately, something happened with Alpha Hues. He decided to back out and instead sent his men to send a message. As a result, a few of my pack members were attacked and killed. Before we knew it, Alpha Hues had declared war on us. Claiming he never agreed to any of our terms and that we were trying to steal his pack." Erik said his voice was soft as he explained the story to me. He rubbed his hand through his chocolate brown hair.
"We found out after it ended that Alpha Hues was very sick. He had been attacked a few weeks back after we had started our agreement. The rogue who attacked him was diseased. It drove him mad, causing his wolf to turn feral. It took over and only wanted blood. If we had known sooner, we could have avoided the war and all of the losses we endured on both ends." He stopped talking to look at me. Knowing what happened to Alpha Hues made my stomach turn. Rogues were horrendous creatures. They took my mother's life and then indirectly took my father's. I didn't realize I had started crying until I felt a tear fall from my eye and roll down my cheek. I looked away from Alpha Eriks and wiped my face.
"I'm sorry for your loss Athena. It was never my intention to hurt you and your pack." His voice was genuine.
"I'm no longer hungry." I stood up from my tables and ran out of the dining room. I knew I would get in trouble for not properly excusing myself from alpha, but I didn't care. My father died for no reason, and it made me feel even more broken than before. I knew it wasn't Alpha Erik's fault, but he was the only one I could be angry at, the only one still alive to feel my pain.

Erik's POV
"Nice one, make our mate cry and hate us," Creed growled.
"At least now she knows it wasn't our fault," I muttered.
"Alpha, we are outside ready when you are," Drake said through the mind link.
"I'll be right there," I said as I left the dining room, ending our link. I definitely needed to hunt after this. Creed was pissed at me for being so truthful, and I hated myself for making her cry. You're supposed to protect your mate. It killed me not being able to hold her and make her feel safe. I knew it would be too soon to share our bond, but it was getting harder not to touch her.
"Earth to Alpha, dinner go that bad," Drake asked through the mind link. I hadn't even noticed he was talking to me while we were hunting. We caught three deer and needed one more.
"What makes you say it that," I muttered back.
"You haven't said anything to me, Dylan, Gabriel, or Lucas since we started hunting. You love the chase, and you're kind of being a drag." Drake laughed. "whatever happened, I'm sure she'll come around. She just doesn't know yet." He said, his voice switched to a more serious tone. Drake was always good at reading people, especially when it came to mating bonds. He could predict a soon-to-be-mated couple from a mile away.
"Never asked for your advice Drake, keep it up, and ill have to downgrade you to our psychology wing." I laughed. I could feel his mood shift as I said that.
"Somethings here," Dylan shouted through the link.
"Smells like a rogue." We all stopped running and sniffed the air.
"It's a rogue, alright, careful. He smells more pungent than usual," I ordered.
Just as we looked up, a wolf came charging at us. His fur was all matted and coated in mud and dried blood. He had been in his wolf form for a while. His eyes were grey, and his mouth was foaming. He snarled at us, snapping his teeth.
"He's sick, don't get bit!" I shouted as I charged forward, taking out the rogue's back legs. It didn't even notice it, turning and snapping at me. Drake came up behind and stomped on its head. Dylan ran forward; the rogue's front paw swung up, clipping him before he ripped its neck open. The rogue stopped moving instantly. Its blood pooled on the ground beneath him. We all went behind trees and turned into our human forms, slipping on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt we had placed around the forest.
"Burn his body. We don't need any other animals getting sick," I ordered. I bent down and lifted the rogue's paw. There was a large bite mark on his arm. It was filled with puss and smelt like rotting flesh.
"This is the first one in months. Where are they coming from, and how are they getting so sick." Drake asked.
"I'm not sure, but we will need to double up on patrols and increase training. We can't have any of our pack members getting bit or sick." I said I stood back up and looked at Dylan, one of the warriors that came with us
"Dylan, I need you to go back to the packhouse. Go see Doctor Turner get him to give you some shots, and have you monitored for a few days." I said, making sure to contain my anger
"Yes, Alpha." He said, nodding and then running in the direction of the town.
"Gabriel, Lucas, I need you two to bring the deer to the shop to be drained of their blood for the ceremony. Unfortunately, we will have to make do with the amount we have. It's too dangerous to be out here right now." They both nodded at me and turned back into their wolves to collect the deer and head back to town.
"Drake, we will have to have a meeting with the other warriors. I will get them to come to the hall so we can discuss our plans." I said the feeling of being watched washed over me. My hair standing up on end as I felt a powerful presence.
"Do you feel that?" Drake asked me. I nodded before stepping back.
"I know you're there. Step forward before I drag you out." I Snapped my voice cold and demanding. We heard a woman laugh as she stepped forward.
"I've made the big bad wolf angry." She pouted, her voice sounding as if she was talking to a child.
"I would watch your mouth. You are speaking to an Alpha." Drake snapped.
"You mutts and your hierarchy. You're all just a waste of space and time." She spit as she stepped forward into view.
She was tall and thin, her eyes blue as the sea and her hair scarlet red. Her skin was porcelain and almost glowed. Her ears were pointed. She smelt of citrus and lavender, and her body sent off waves of power. She had a beauty you couldn't ignore. It was magical.
"She can't be," Drake whispered. His eyes were wide as he watched her stand there.
"Oh, but I am, one of the very last purebloods in existence." She said, her face held a sinister smile.
"Why are you here Fae," I asked, my voice sharp.
"I'm here to make you a deal." She said, "I need something that you have in your possession."
"What would that possession be?" I asked, feeling the annoyance and anger rush through me. The instinct to protect my pack overruled my curiosity with most enemies, but she had me wonder what she could want.
"You will know soon enough. But when I come for it, you will give it to me. If not, you will find your entire pack infected. That wolf wasn't sick from anything of your world. Neither was that Mutt that ran the other pack."
"What did you do to Alpha Hues," Drake growled.
"I made him sick, of course. He refused to corporate with me. He believed he could hide things from me." She laughed.
"This item I seek isn't ready yet. I will be back in a month. Remember, if you refuse to give it to me, your pack will suffer. Until next time Erik." She said before fading before our eyes.
"What the fuck was that.." Drake asked frantically.
"I don't know, but she isn't getting what she wants without a fight. Alpha Hues protected it with his life, and we need to talk to Beta Paul to see what he knows." I growled. Creed was seeping through. Drake nodded in agreement. We shifted into our wolves and returned to the pack.
I met with my warriors and gave them their instructions. First, they were to increase their patrol teams and have them posted all along the forest. Second, they would increase training and were to report anything different, smells or even sounds they were hearing. Fae are powerful creatures and not to be tested. Though they never aged, they could be killed. After we finished up our meeting, I headed to my office, Drake and Paul following me. We sat in my office, the air heavy as I began questioning the newest member of my pack.
"Paul, did Hues ever mention anything to you about a Fae visiting him. Did he ever say anything weird?" I asked. My eyes were hard as I stared at him, gauging his reaction. Paul stared at me, his eyes falling before he spoke.
"Yes, sir." He said, his voice full of remorse.

Chapter 9 - Protection I slammed my fist on my desk. "Damnit, Paul, why wasn't I informed of this. When I asked you about past treaties and attacks, you never thought this was something that needed to be mentioned." I growled. "What is it that she wants," I demanded. "I was ordered not to mention it to anyone. Even after Alpha Hues passed, I honoured his command." His voice was low and full of regret. "The Fae told us a story of a wolf. One with unlimited power, its fur so dark it glowed blue in the light. She believes that one of our pack members has this wolf and is waiting for the wolf to come of age. She demanded that Alpha Hues inform her as soon as it happened. He refused to help her, so she infected him. We told her that the
Chapter 10 - Ceremony Athena POV After dinner, I was left feeling even more confused about Erik than before. It left me with a night full of staring up at the ceiling. As the sun started rising and a new day had started, I rolled out of bed unrested and unable to soothe the knot in my stomach. Before I could even get fully dressed, there was a knock at the door. "One second," I shouted. I slipped on my burgundy sports bra, a loose white Tee and burgundy leggings. I opened the door to see Alpha Erik standing there. My eyes widened as I stared at him, and my heart started racing beyond my control. His face was hard as he looked like he had a night without sleep as well. I roamed his face as I looked at his chiselled jaw and his eyes dark with emerald sp
Chapter 11 - Nightmares "Unbelievable," I shouted in frustration as I turned from the door. I turned around to look at the room I was now stuck in. My eyes widened as I looked around the room. In the middle of the room was a four-poster bed. There were two doors, one that led to a bathroom and another that led to a closet bigger than any closet I ever had. It was fully stocked with clothes for every event. The room was bright, with white walls and pops of gold throughout. When I walked into the washroom, my eyes landed on a huge soaker tub and a walk-in shower. A large mirror that spread across the wall. "I have never had anything so beautiful in my life. There has to be a mistake. I'm sure Beta Drake just put us in the wrong room." I said to Phoenix
Chapter 12 - Pleasure Athena POV "I can't believe we're doing this." I groaned as I got out of bed. Phoenix stayed silent as I approached his door. "If he doesn't answer the first knock, we're turning around and going back to bed," I said, more to myself than her. "Whatever you say," Phoenix laughed. Her excitement was twisting my stomach in knots. I reached up to the door and tapped gently, hoping he didn't hear it and I could retreat to my warm and safe bed. I waited a moment before letting out a sigh of relief and disappointment. I didn't know why I let her talk me into coming, but at the same time, she didn't really have to do much convincing.
Chapter 13 - Awakening Unknown POV "I know where the child is. It's only a matter of time before they shift. Once their wolf emerges, we will take them." She laughed. The thought of all the power she would gain if she successfully captured my daughter was horrifying. But I had to hope she was ready and trained well enough to see through it all and claim her rights to the throne. "You will never win, Dela. I won't let you use my child for evil." I spit at her. She smacked my face scratching my cheek with her nails. My body has become numb to the pain I've endured throughout the years. I didn't give her the satisfaction of witnessing any reactions. Instead, I looked up at her and smiled, earning myself a punch to the stomach. She laughed as I grunted from the force of her
Chapter 14 - Lies Athens POV I was in and out of consciousness the whole walk back to the packhouse. Being with Alpha Erik made the pain tolerable. My body had already sweated out the sedative he gave me. I was coated in a thick layer of sweat, and my muscles were shaking from exhaustion. I couldn't make out anything anyone was saying. The pain demanded all my attention. Even Phoenix was having trouble snapping me out of my trance. I felt the warmth leave me and was replaced with a cold surface. My body welcomed the cold as it was overheated. It wrapped around my body like kisses from the winter skies. I was too lost to the discomfort to realize that I was now naked. The cold was slowly replaced with heat as the sheet was placed on top of me. My skin
Chapter 15 - Second Wave "Athena, wake up." I heard someone whisper into my ear. I slowly opened my eyes. A girl with a warm smile greeted me. "I'm so happy to meet you finally..." she said excitedly, her voice soft as she gently cupped my cheek with her hand. "Where am I? Who are you." I asked, dazed. Last I remembered, I was in the shifting room alone. Now I was in an empty room. With a girl I had never seen before. Her hair was long and the colour of lavender. Her skin was fair, and her eyes were as bright as the blue sky. "I've been waiting a long time to meet you. It isn't easy being locked away. Phoenix had no problem reaching you, but I couldn't break down your walls." She huffed before laughing at
Chapter 16 - Obligation Eriks POV "Tom and Greta, I need to speak to them." She whispered before passing out. Her body was covered in sweat as it gave in to the exhaustion. Most wolves passed out and slept for days after a shift. Yet, she was awake and moving around after her first shift. She was strong and resilient. She wasn't afraid to show her emotions throughout the changes. Due to her magical abilities, she shifted faster than most did too. It would normally take a day or two to switch from one form back to another completely. But, she did it in a matter of hours. She had been in here for a day and had completed both shifts. I picked her up and carried her back to her room. Placing her on the bed, I grabbed one of my shirts and slipped it over her head. Covering her up, I headed to the door, turning around to gi
Epilogue Three weeks later Damon The pressure of the crown was building as Alora and I settled into our new roles. My father was no longer here to keep the council at bay with their demands. But despite it all, I had found that I enjoyed this new life I had been given. The new responsibilities allowed me even more control over the Kingdom than the Captain of the guards ever could. All be it; I did miss the battle prep and daily training. But I still found holes in my busy schedule to take Alora out to the training fields at least once a week. I knew that eventually, our routine would become steady, and we would have more time to relax, but new rulers came with change and to have change, you needed to vote on old and new laws to pass. Alora and I had already made some big changes, like incorporating technology from the human realm into our daily lives to allow us easier communication with other realms. But there were still a lot of issues with the old ways of running our Kingdom
Chapter 49 - To Love and Cherish ErikPeace was something that was talked about constantly. During wars, it was what we fought for. While ruling a Kingdom, it was what we strived to maintain. But I had never truly known peace until now. The thought of finally being ridden of this pain inside of me, knowing that soon I would be with my love once again, was freeing. The final night with my family started out slow, but it eventually picked up and ran right into the night. There was laughter and tears exchanged around the table as we shared stories of my past and everyone got a chance to say goodbye, getting the closer they needed. And as everyone turned in for the night, I found myself alone again; unable to sleep, I found myself outside. I stayed up looking out at the stars waiting for the sun to rise. I closed my eyes, letting the warm breeze brush across my skin, engraving it into my mind. "So you really are going to spend your last moments alive, sitting in a field of flowers like
Chapter 48 - GoodbyesErikI watched as the sun set beyond the forest, the oranges and pinks of the sky blending together as the sun bid it farewell. It had been a long time since I had nothing to do, no responsibilities with the crown or of the guards. I thought it might help me move on from the hell that the last year had been without Athena, but now I realize that was a stupid notion. It was lonely, and the weight of losing my mate weighed heavier on my heart now than it did while I still ruled.I kept as busy as a retired King could, helping Damon when he needed to seek council or helping Apollo if he needed a hand with training recruits, but I knew that they both didn't really need my help. They just didn't want me to feel left out. Apollo was a natural at his role, and so was Damon. Despite what Damon said when he first discovered he would be the next in line to inherit the throne. He took to it as a bird took to the sky. He was a born leader and shined when he was in control o
Chapter 47 - Home Alora It had been a month since I had been crowned Queen of Gardenia, the days seeming to slip away as the kingdom welcomed the summer solstice and our ruling.I was busy learning my new role, Damon's father and Grandfather helping ease us both into the important roles we both now held. However, it was easier having Helga by my side. I was happy to have her as my royal advisor, and Rachel had said she was a natural already. I knew she would be, though; she always loved to take control and never gave up the opportunity to tell someone off. It was also working in my favour because Lord folic was so busy fighting with her that he always missed out on voting for new laws or changes to existing rulings. Damon loved it, and it made the council meetings less gruelling. It was absurd how many times we had to have a council meeting. At least once a day, and most of the things brought up were trivial problems. By the end of the day, I was just happy to get some alone time
Chapter 46 - The CrownDamon It felt like an eternity had passed as I waited in the royal chambers with my father. It felt even longer when we exchanged goodbyes at the throne room, and I waited at the dais while he sat on his throne. Melody stood in front of my father, a smile stretched across her face, glowing brightly. The room was full of people, some from the council, others from royal families, friends, family, and people from our Kingdom. All watching and waiting for the ceremony to begin.I was in a black royal jacket that was made with silver threading, and our family crest stitched into my left breast pocket. The wolves were placed proudly amongst the roses and the sword that separated them as they howled at the moon. My silver crown was placed on my head, but that would be changed once mine and Alora's vows were complete and only after the mothers accepted us as the new King and Queen to signal the dawn of a new era. Drake stood to the right of me, his mate, my mother's
Chapter 45 - Long Live The Queen Damon "Again," I commanded as Alora worked to keep the wings she had summoned to remain on her back. She had learned quickly how to handle the phoenix flames since she had already worked with the fire element. But now came the hard part, only half shifting. I did it all the time, especially in battle, morphing my nails into claws and elongating my canines. But nothing about that was easy; it came with time and practice, but Alora wanted to have it mastered. With the coronation and our mate ceremony happening tomorrow, she wanted to be better at it. Not only to prove to the council and our people that she was a worthy Queen but also to herself. I didn't want to be the one to tell her to slow down, not after she had spent so much of her life ruled under someone else thumb. But I had warned her of the risks of exhaustion and told her that when I saw fit, we would end the training for the evening.Alora begrudgingly accepted my condition, and I kept tr
Chapter 44 - Worship AloraI flipped through the pages of the phoenix book the jinx family had kept for generations. There was so much to process, like what abilities I now possessed because of what I was. It made my head hurt; there was so much to learn, so much to figure out. I was now different than normal fae; I was now a shifter. But, unlike most shifting fae, my order didn't communicate with me. Instead, it was a part of me; we were one and the same. I would still live an immortal life, only having one enemy that could stop me from ever being reborn, permanently ending my life. A Basilisk. A venous snake shifter that, like me, was rare, most believed them to be extinct. But now that I existed, one would be born, if not already—the universe now having to find balance in all forms. It was mindblowing the things I had already read about. For example, I could enchant items with my flames, similar to everlasting fire. But unlike everlasting fire, I couldn't break wards or spells w
Chapter 43 - WarningDamonI sat at the dais, my legs hanging over the edge as I waited for Cedric to arrive with the artifacts Alora and I asked for. Balor was right when he said the Jinx family would bargain for their priceless information. The smug look on their faces was wiped away and replaced with wide gaping mouths as they stared at the amulet in shock.Diana had muttered a curse under her breath. One I was sure she wanted me to hear because she said it so close to me. But I bit my tongue as I handed over the amulet, not wanting to risk them being stingy with their end of the deal.Alora was waiting in the Library, looking over whatever other books Audra had found for her. Now that Alora had her dream magic again, she was more determined than ever to find out what else she was capable of doing. I couldn't help but admire her for her devotion and eagerness. I was still reeling in from the mind-blowing realization that not only was Alora a rare Pheonix shifter, but she was also
Chapter 42 - Full CircleAloraIt's funny how even after you have overcome your deepest fears that they can still creep up on you. That was how it felt right now, anyways, as we arrived at the Dream realm. It was a ghost town, everyone seeming to either vanish with my mother's magic or flee as soon as they were freed from their promise to her. The streets were quiet, the ports empty, and the palace looked haunted. The golden paint was already losing its shine and fading with the faded magic. The windows were dark and unwelcoming as we approached the not-so-gilded gate. It was now that I felt the fear of my mother creep up on me. The well of my fears bubbled in the pit of my stomach. For decades I walked through these gates and made my way to my mother's throne room to report my findings and give her the things she requested I steal. The motions all felt so familiar, but with Damon by my side, they also felt different. I knew he could sense my hesitation as we approached the giant w
