Enzo’s POV

I hated watching Scarlett use her air magic.

Well – to be honest, it wasn’t the magic part that I hated so much. That bit was actually kind of cool: watching her hands glow and her face break into a grin as she commanded the winter wind to coil up her arms and billow through her hair. She was beautiful like that, full of confidence and pride. I was proud of her, too. Her determination alone was enough to bring me to my knees and pledge myself to her, all over again.

It was what came after that made me so upset. I couldn’t bear watching her collapse every time; seeing it ate away at me, but I knew that not being with her while she grappled with her newfound powers would only hurt more. The more she used her magic, the more intense her fainting spells became.

“Scar!” I raced out into the clearing, blood pounding through my veins, heart thundering in my chest. I couldn’t feel any of her pain when she collapsed, but seeing her slack face and unseeing eyes told me all I needed

  • Alpha Enzo   065 | YOU'RE ACTING WEIRD

Scarlett’s POV“You’re acting weird,” I remarked casually, reaching for the jam. Glancing over at Enzo, I added, “weirder than your normal, dorky self, that is.”He huffed and rolled his eyes. “Thanks. I think.”I smiled wryly. “You’re welcome. But no, seriously – what’s up?”He dropped his toast and scratched at his jaw. A crumb stuck to his stubble. My smile grew. “This Ryker business. It’s like a cloud looming over us, you know? I was just starting to feel like things were going smoothly for us.”“Yeah.” I smoothed the jam over my buttery toast. God, eating like this was still such a luxury to me. My layers of butter and jam were easily twice as thick as Enzo’s, and I went back to add a little more. “But we’re ready for whatever happens.”“It’s not that. It’s – well, what if Bennett’s right?”“Is that why you’ve been staring at the ceiling at night?” I put down my knife and levelled my gaze at him.“The first time I could’ve sworn I saw a snake up there.”“A snake. In your bedroom.

Enzo’s POVI felt permanently on edge after Bennett’s latest intrusive message. It became impossible to distract myself, because every time I opened a book in the library or ran past a tree at training, I expected to see the words ‘I told you so’ inked or carved there. He’d effectively managed to infiltrate our lives – and my blooming paranoia wasn’t even the worst problem Scar and I had to deal with.So much for our peaceful paradise. Even now, with Scarlett’s head resting sleepily on my chest and the first rays of dawn spilling in through the open curtains, my brow was furrowed and stress pounded at my temples. Lifting a hand, I pressed my fingertips into my temples and started to rub. Hard.Scar lifted her head, her eyelids still closed, her lashes forming a dark crescent over her freckled skin. “Whassmatter?”Despite it all, I huffed out a laugh. “In English, please?”She yawned widely and snuggled back in. “What. Is. The.” She paused, yawning again, before she finished. “Matter?”

Scarlett’s POV“So,” I said, leaning forward on Enzo’s bed, frowning at the television, “he’s an alien?”“Yeah.” Enzo rubbed my knee, but his gaze didn’t once falter from the screen. “From the planet Gallifrey. And he travels around in a blue box that he stole…”“No, go on.” My lips twitched. “And the plastic?”“Is alive.” He grinned and, at last, turned to face me. “I’m sorry. We don’t have to watch it.”“No, I’m enjoying it. I’m confused, but happy.”“Well, that’s all I can ask.” He kissed my cheek. “I’m glad you’re happy.”“Me, too. Your parents are so nice.”They really were. We’d chatted easily, amicably, once I’d settled into myself – and got past the fact that Enzo had snickered at me for saying ‘Most welcome.’ Geno and Resme were warm people in a warm home, and with the mulled wine sinking into my flesh I’d found that our conversations had flowed as easily as drink into my cup. And, if I’d caught them sharing sad, almost pitying, looks whenever my past came up, no matter how q

Enzo’s POVScarlett was keeping something from me. I was sure of it.Since we’d got back from my parents, she’d been… tense. There wasn’t anything specific that I could pinpoint, just a vague feeling of wrongness. Her smiles seemed false, forced somehow, even when I knew her laughter was genuine. The mate bond fizzed between us, rather than glowing as it usually did. But I trusted her, and it wasn’t like I was being entirely honest either, so I let it slide. She’d tell me whatever it was when she was ready – I just hoped that moment didn’t come too late.In the meantime, I had plenty else to keep my mind occupied. Ryker’s tyranny was seemingly unstoppable, and my pack were getting increasingly rowdy, demanding that I do something to keep us safe.I didn’t want Ryker or Bennett coming here. I’d lost myself in the last few months, but I was ready to be a defender of my people again. A protector. So I’d gathered everyone in the pack house’s meeting room. Everyone except for Scarlett, wh

  • Alpha Enzo   069 | SCANDALOUS

Scarlett’s POVMy breath stilled in my lungs. The world compressed around me. I never should have kept this from Enzo. Never.Because now he was looking at me like he didn’t know me, and my heart was being torn clean out of my chest. I couldn’t even move to hold the fractured pieces of it together; I was frozen to the spot in every way possible, save for the blood pounding loudly against my temples. “You – you asked him to come?” His voice was caught somewhere between a breath of disbelief and the same growl he’d spoken to Bennett in. “We talked about this, Scar. He could be working for Alpha Ryker!”“That’s a risk we have to take. What choice do we have otherwise? Do we just keep coming up with plans that may or may not work? Do we hide out here until Ryker comes for me again? At least this way, I’ll go down fighting–”“You shouldn’t be going down at all!”I stood up. My hands trembled, so I clenched them into fists at my sides. Fake blood dripped down my chest; suddenly angry, I g

  • Alpha Enzo   070 | THE WOLVEN REALMS

Enzo’s POVScarlett wrinkled her nose as she waved a hand down at her bloodied front. “I’m going to have a shower. Then I guess we’d better call a meeting with him.”It was like before, I thought, like when she’d suggested an Omega show Bennett to one of our guest rooms. A double punch – she’d not only taken the lead and made that suggestion, but she’d said our guest rooms, too. Not mine. Not Moose Creek’s. Ours.I could feel my brow furrowing slightly, but I couldn’t seem to smooth my features out. I just kept staring at her, jarred. For a wolf without a wolf, who had been an Omega less than a year ago, Scarlett seemed to have a real knack for leadership. Hell, I hated that she’d called Bennett and not told me about it – but she’d taken charge and made a huge decision that would affect not only our pack, but wolves in all four of the Realms.Proud of her as I was, awed as I felt, it didn’t change the fact that she’d gone behind my back on this. Even if I didn’t fucking hate Bennett a

Scarlett’s POVI kept pacing, needing to move to be able to think clearly. “Okay, but if he does attack another Wolven Realm first,” I pointed out, “he’ll have a bigger army when he reaches the Canadian Realm. Right?”Bennett bit his lip before saying, “Yes.”“You’ve made it quite clear that you know what’s coming. You managed to leave messages everywhere for us to find; if you could manage that, you should be able to tell us, plainly, what we need to do.”He grinned. “There we go. It only took a few weeks.” He eyed me pointedly. “This was the best outcome, by the way. You always left me in Adelaide. Well – there were a couple of potential futures where you didn’t, but they ended… badly.”I huffed. “You wanted me to leave.” It wasn’t a question.“I did. Nobody can persuade anyone to do anything; you had to grow to trust yourself, and your powers, on your own.”Suddenly I was back in the alleyway, hearing the squeal of tyres straining to stop, the creak of footsteps inching down the tr

  • Alpha Enzo   72 | ENZO! ENZO! ENZO!

Enzo’s POVThe blood drained from my face. My heart pounded so loud and so hard that all I could hear was its rapid beats. I should never have stayed. Eavesdropping never brought good news, did it? I’d been a fool. And yet I couldn’t bring myself to regret listening in on Scarlett’s conversation with Bennett. I should’ve trusted her to tell me, should’ve trusted him to make me aware of anything I really needed to know, but… I didn’t.I’d thought we were fixing things between us, but I knew now that there was something seriously broken in our bond. I mean, she still hadn’t said she loved me back - that had to mean something, didn’t it? I screwed my face up, pressing my clenched fists against my cheeks. All of me hurt. I was breaking her trust now, just as she’d broken mine. Fuck. All of this was just… well, that. It was all fucked. And now she was going to have to sacrifice herself to stop Alpha Ryker. Just when we’d had a taste of what our life together might look like, with her taki

Bennett’s POVThings had taken a while to fall back into place after the battle. With the pack house left in ruins, Scarlett and Enzo had worked with his parents to rehome everyone that lived inside it while it was rebuilt. His mother and father had stayed close, lending their expertise as they got to grips with navigating life post-Ryker.They hadn’t been the only ones to stay, though. I’d asked to remain in Moose Creek. Enzo had accepted my cagey reasoning with narrowed eyes, but he would’ve said yes to just about anything with his mate’s hand on his arm. In truth, I didn’t know where else to go now. Everything in my life had been building up to this. Crafting prophecies for people to find, leaving breadcrumb trails, making messages, telling everyone just the right thing at exactly the right time – I’d never known a moment to myself. Now that was all I had. And I couldn’t See my way forward. Not anymore. I’d told nobody that Scarlett hadn’t been the only one to lose her powers t

Scarlett’s POVI opened my eyes.Sunlight blinded me. No – not sunlight. My own light, golden and magical, surrounded me. Held limp in its grip, it lifted me into the air.But I – I’d been dead. Hadn’t I?I remembered the feel of my life leaving me. I remembered losing my energy, my strength, feeling my body wilt beneath the weight of the magic tearing through my veins and rushing out through my palms. But now the wind was here, holding me, healing me, and I felt it dance across my skin, through my hair, as it pulled my arms out and pointed my legs down towards the ground. I remembered dying. But that wasn’t all I remembered. Vague, fuzzy shapes filtered into my mind, taking form as the light raised me higher and higher. I saw humans, knew their names, saw Adelaide, saw a city and a death and a chase, saw Bennett and a library and Enzo – My beautiful Enzo. How could I ever have forgotten all that we had shared? The memories poured in as my brain healed, the light coming from within

  • Alpha Enzo   121 | THE END OF THEM

Bennett’s POVI was dying. Such a fact was two things: simple and irrefutable. To fight it was futile; to ignore it was idiocy. But I had done as I had been bid by the visions that had plagued me since birth. I had fought the prophecy and, I hoped, saved the world from the tyranny breeding at its wolven heart. It was hard, seeing the world in pathways and possibilities. Even now, as I lay upon the gleaming white floor of Moose Creek’s medical centre, sedative spilling through my veins and blood streaming from my chest, photos of the futures forking from this moment blinded me. I saw Scarlett stood amidst the dead, the only survivor in a war she’d never asked for. I saw her bent over her mate’s body, sobs wracking through her. Then I saw her fumble for the outstretched claws of a fallen werewolf and use them to slit her own throat.I squeezed my eyes shut at that one. It did nothing to halt the visions, of course, but it always made me feel as if I had some semblance of control over

  • Alpha Enzo   120 | FORESIGHT, MAGIC, AND STRENGTH

Enzo’s POV I blinked into a sudden burst of gossamer sunlight. “Scarlett,” I rasped, choking up blood. All of me hurt, save for my heart. That was lighter than it had ever been. She was okay. She was a vision in the dying light, her auburn hair with its blonde ends glimmering softly, like the shimmering surface of a ruffled lake; her beautiful blue-green eyes wide, shining with unshed tears; her stance strong and proud and powerful, even as she fell apart at the sorry sight of me. “Fuck,” she whispered, her eyes filling. “Enzo. Oh, God…” “I’m okay,” I grunted. It was a lie. A dying man’s lie to make the love of his life feel better. Blood streamed from my neck; my body felt numb from my face down. The pain was gone, but my feeling was gone with it too. I was outside now, and I’d definitely been inside the last time I’d been conscious. Had my body been trampled beneath the paws of hundreds of Ryker’s wolves? In the heat of battle, it was just as likely that my own pack had buried m

  • Alpha Enzo   119 | TRUST AND TRUTH

Scarlett’s POVI stared numbly at the doorway. Emila stood at its centre, hands on hips, her expression all furrowed brows and wide eyes. “Scarlett!” she gasped. “What are you doing?”I met her gaze unflinchingly. “He doesn’t need to be in an induced coma,” I said boldly. I’d never felt so damned bold in all my life. “Does he, Medic?” I spat. She held her hands up and walked towards me slowly. “I’m not sure what’s got into you, or why you’re doing this, but please, Scarlett, step away from my patient. He needs to rest to heal.”Doubt started to creep in. I clutched the sedation tube, letting it dangle from my fingers. I’d been so sure…What if I was wrong? Had I just signed Bennett’s death certificate?Gritting my teeth, I held still. He’d woken up before when I’d used my magic to keep the sedation at bay. And he’d told me to stop her – had he meant Emila all along? He had to know what she planned to do to him. My resolve firm once more, I looked back up at her.She smiled weakly, app

  • Alpha Enzo   118 | A LOSING GAME

Enzo’s POVWe were pushed back further and further. I was the last one standing in the doorway, using my huge wolven body to block out the attacking army. Though we were fighting a losing battle, I was proud of my wolves. We’d kept Ryker’s pets at bay far longer than I’d thought we’d ever had any hope of doing. The sun was dipping lower in the sky, brushing the tips of the massacred pine trees, burnishing their bottle-green needles a deep, glittering gold.It also shone on the pools of blood. The ground was soaked in it, rivulets running down the slight hillock upon which the pack house stood. Bodies of wolves broke its streams; my wolves, Ryker’s wolves. They were clawed and bitten, missing limbs, missing chunks of fur and flesh. Such violence would stain the land here forever. But worse still than the gore and the sightless eyes of my fallen warriors was the gnawing worry about my mate. I hadn’t seen Scar since she’d run into the crowd. Unable to mindlink her, I was left drowning in

  • Alpha Enzo   117 | A TRAITOR IN OUR MIDST

Scarlett’s POVI ducked through the wolves, narrowly avoiding the swiping, slashing claws. Nobody seemed to notice me as I ran – they were focused on the other wolves with teeth bared and blood soaked into their muzzles. I brushed under the bellies of those in Enzo’s pack, using them to protect me from the enemy wolves. Then I was pushed forward by a surge of movement from behind. Arms wheeling, I stumbled through the front line of our warriors and fell, head first, into the tangle of Ryker’s wolves.“Fuck,” I gasped, smacking into warm, bloodied fur. I bounced off its firm, muscled body, and rolled until I hit paws. Then I scrambled to my feet – Only to be clawed down my face. I bit back a scream, pressing my palms to the wound. Blood streamed between my fingers, pouring over my eye. I squeezed it shut. My head throbbed; each pulse shook me, the cut burning and stinging. Barely able to see, I ran, my back bowed, zig-zagging through the writhing mass of wolven bodies.Running through

  • Alpha Enzo   116 | BATTLE HARDENED

Enzo’s POVI shoved down my terror as the wolves swelled around us, a writhing, unforgiving tide. Like a stone upon the shore I stood firm, knowing I must withstand its force. My terror was not for me, and neither was my determination. It was for her – my mate, the beautiful woman sat upon my wolven back – and for my pack members. They had not chosen this fate, no more than Scar or I had. This was our only chance to make it right.Scarlett knotted her fingers in my fur. She leant forward and whispered, “I’ve got you.”Then the enemy was upon us.I surged forward, meeting them rather than allowing them to breach our front line. My Beta and Gamma lunged with me, our movements so well practised we barely had to think of them. I had to adjust my balance more with Scar on my back, but it was instinct, raw and as natural as breathing, to keep her secure atop me.My jaw locked around a grey wolf’s neck. I clamped down, pulled back, tore flesh from bone. The wolf fell to the ground, dead. Blo

Scarlett’s POV“Pretty much,” said Isaak, his gaze downcast. He shuffled his weight from foot to foot. “I’m sorry.”“Why did they target your sister?” I asked, leaning closer to the cell bars. He shrugged. “She’s the only family I have left. They knew I’d do anything for her, I guess. Even…”I nodded. “Even this.” But then my eyes narrowed. “How did they know you well enough to target her?”Isaak’s cheeks flushed. He started picking at his cuticles and refused to meet my eyes. “They have scouts too,” he said. I felt convinced it was a lie. Before I could push the matter, though, Enzo grabbed my arm.“Hey,” I said, trying to pry his fingers off. They were white knuckled. My belly hollowed out. “What is it?”“Marla just mindlinked me,” he whispered, glancing furtively at Isaak. Understanding immediately, I towed him out of the cells and up into a nook at the top of the stairs. My back was pressed flat against the wall; Enzo huddled close, biting his lip as he looked around anxiously.O
