Nora's POV
He grabbed my dress and ripped it off, revealing my stark nakedness. I felt exposed and alone. So, terribly alone.
"Hear ye!" The pudgy, bearded bellowed, arms outstretched. "I have come again, as I always do, and this time I have the choicest of slaves for you. Strong, agile and well-fed, the best you'd find anywhere. As you can see, she is young, undefiled and unsullied. She is a maiden of royal blood, the likes of which you'd never find again!"
I gasped as the man pushed me towards the front of the platform in the middle of the marketplace. My hands were bound with chains, and so were my legs, so walking was extremely uncomfortable. Fear clogged my throat, but I tried to push past it, facing the crowd in all my shredded dignity.
The slave master leaned towards me and whispered. "You'd better keep your eyes on the ground. No crying, no fighting, no fidgeting. You're a slave now, not fucking royalty. Do you hear me?"
I mumbled in agreement.
"Good." He murmured, then plastered a smile on his face and turned his back to me, facing the gathering market crowd.
From the corner of my eyes, I could see the gathered crowd muttering to themselves and pointing at each slave in turn. I felt like a piece of meat on a butcher's table, being groped and scrutinized and haggled over.
"Auctions start from a hundred gold coins apiece. That's a hundred gold coins apiece!" The man continued.
"I'll take her!" A merchant called out. I felt rather than heard the murmuring of everyone around me, and I jerked my head upwards.
His finger was pointed towards me. I could feel the weight of several eyes on my body, as my cheeks went red with embarrasment.
The slave master was looking at me with slightly bulging eyes, silently urging me to move forward. "Get a move on!" He growled at me through gritted teeth, and I stumbled forward. The slave master pushed me to my knees, and I gasped in pain as my knees scraped the wooden platform painfully.
"I bid two hundred gold coins!" The merchant called out, jiggling a small bag of coins in his hand.
The slave master grinned. "Two hundred gold coins! Do I see three hundred?"
"I bid three hundred!" A buxom woman called out from the edge of the crowd.
"That's three hundred! Do I hear five hundred? Five hundred gold coins?"
"Five hundred gold coins!" Another stranger yelled from the crowd.
And the haggling went on.
For some reason, the merchants continued to bid for me. The bidding went on for several hours, until the sun was high overhead and my skin was blistering with its rays. Tears and sweat dropped from my face as I heard people haggling over me, pricing my freedom as though it was theirs to own.
I wasn't sure I wanted this, but there was no way out.
I couldn't run again. This was my final destination.
"Ten thousand gold coins!" A merchant called out finally. I glanced up to see a severe-looking woman, whose face was nothing but unfriendly. And for the first time since I got to the market, it hit me that this would be my future for the rest of my life.
I would die a mere slave.
The woman walked towards the raised dais, shoulders raised proudly. The slave master was nearly bursting with happiness as he stretched out his hand to collect the bag of gold coins in her hand.
But as the money and my freedom was about to change hands, a new voice called out from the crowd. "I bid twenty thousand gold coins!"
The entire marketplace seemed to fall silent. "What—" the slave master whispered. Heads turned to the back of the crowd, and the people parted to reveal a man standing at the very end of the marketplace.
His face was covered in a white shawl to shield his eyes from the blazing sun. He was fully clothed with his hands in a pair of leather gloves, but my sharp wolf eyes could pick out the battle scars that snaked up his arms and disappeared into his short shirt sleeves. He stood with all the authority of a prowling alpha wolf, and every single gaze was on him.
And as we all watched, the man reached up and pulled the shawl aside, revealing his face.
There he was.
My everlasting nightmare.
Alpha Chester.
The man was flanked on both sides by his beta and his gamma, but he had eyes for no other person but me. His gaze was green-eyed and difficult to ignore, piercing in its intensity. I watched as his lips lifted in a sinister smile at the horrified look on my face.
As I watched, Alpha Chester leaned to his beta and whispered into his ears. My eyes followed his movements as the beta nodded, then collected a large bag of coins from his alpha. Then the beta began to walk slowly towards the platform.
My heart leaped in fright as he walked towards us. I struggled to my feet and moved towards the slave master, hands gripping his cloth. "Sir...master...maybe you should reconsider selling me off to this man." I stammered. "I mean, I am sure there's someone who can bid higher than twenty thousand gold coins for me, right?"
"Damn right, there isn't!" The man snapped at me, scowling to show rotten teeth. "Twenty thousand is as much as I could hope for a pesky little vermin like you."
He shrugged my hands off and moved towards the beta, leaving me behind. My eyes darted around wildly, looking for a mode of escape, but there was none. I could see Alpha Chester's guards situated at every single corner of the small market. I knew I couldn't run far before being caught and dragged back.
The beta threw the bag of gold coins towards the slave master, who caught it in the air. The slave master smiled greedily, the corners of his eyes crinkling in a grin as he held the bag to himself.
I staggered backwards as the chains that bound my hands and feet was handed over to the beta. Forcefully he pulled me down from the stadium and dragged me to the very back of the market, to the waiting arms of my nightmare.
I could hear a wild rushing in my ears, and my heart hammered against my ribcage, filling me with terror. Alpha Chester collected the chains from his beta, then pulled me closer to himself, a victorious smile on his face.
"You are mine, Nora." He whispered into my ear, and an eerie chill went down my spine.
"Alpha....please—" I stuttered.
Alpha Chester smiled, the turning of his lips sending goosebumps down my arms. "I own you now, Nora. You cannot run from me."
Everything seemed to happen in one despairing thread after that. Alpha Chester turned to his beta and handed the chains that bound me over to him. The beta dragged me to a horse, then attached the chains to his saddle.
"Please..." I pleaded in a whisper, my head turned to Alpha Chester. "I don't want to go back....just let me go, alpha...."
The alpha's face was grim and forbidding. Ignoring my pleas, he mounted his own horse and trotted away, leaving his beta and I to follow closely behind.
My heart was shattered, and it felt as though the sharp ends were pressing against my chest. I knew the last of my hope was lost, but in an obscure corner of my heart, I hoped this was a bad dream that I would soon wake from.
Nora's POVThe bad dream hadn't ended yet. If anything, it got worse.I was pacing around a specially prepared room in the alpha's quarters, back in my pack and my home. Was it really a home though, if the mere sight of it choked me with tears and bitterness?Being chosen was very strange to me. Out of all the people in my wolf pack—heck, out of every single person in my family—I was the least talked about, the one everyone pushed aside with a scoff and a dismissive wave of the hand. Who would think of quiet, plain-looking Nora anyway, when her more desirable sister was there? And so, when the alpha himself had chosen me as his mate over my sister, the entire pack had been struck dumb. I shuddered in remembrance; I could still feel his eyes on me as he'd singled me out in front of everyone one on his mating ceremony. What was more: it had been the mating ceremony between himself and my sister, Alina.I hadn't craved for the attention that came with being chosen. I didn't want to be hi
Nora's POVI walked down the stairs slowly, taking my steps one at a time. My heart was shattered beyond pieces at the words Alina had spoken to me. They pierced my heart, every single one of those words. They reminded me of how big of a mistake I had made, how I'd let everyone down simply by existing.I reached the foot of the staircase, lifting the white dress I had on. The entire hall was silent; no fanfare or people waiting to wish me a happy married life. This was what I deserved. To be wedded off in the most shady, unimpressive way ever. There wasn't any cake, nor did any decorations hang from the walls. In fact, the hall was as bland as it could be.I turned to the maid behind me, moving to ask her where the wedding would hold, when a voice shut me up immediately."You're ready." The voice called, sending shivers down my spine. Alpha Chester emerged from the shadows to my left, walking towards me. He was decked out in an impressive white suit, his long locks held up in a slick
Chester's POVIt was the day after our mating ceremony. The entire Council of Wolves, including Nora and her family, were gathered in the court room to discuss the new turn of events.I refused to look at my new mate throughout the court room session. I knew that if I did, the primal urge to whisk her out of the room would come over me again, and to hell with the Council and their annoying meeting if that happened. My body was already reacting just by looking at her, and I wanted nothing more than to be left alone with her.She was seated on the other end of the long table, wedged between her father and one other Elder on the Council. I noticed the large space she left between herself and her father, noticed the way she played with her fingers as though she was nervous and scared shitless. Her face was streaked with tears, and her eyes were downcast.I hated to be the cause for her pain, but it had to be done. She was my mate, and there was no going back on that. Her father, Elder Lya
Nora's POVBefore he left the court room, I watched as the alpha grabbed my hand under the table, yanking me up. I could feel the gaze of every single person sitting around the table on me, and a blush creeped up my cheeks as I averted my eyes.I struggled to maintain a brave front as Alpha Chester pulled me along, my hand imprisoned in his unyielding grip. We left the room together, passing several maids and guards who stared at us with curiosity. The corridor seemed endless, the walls closing in on me as my heart raced with a mixture of fear and confusion.I struggled to keep up with him, as he was dragging me along without looking back. Several times I stumbled, gripping the walls for support, but Alpha Chester was relentless."Let go of me!" I finally spoke up, attempting to wrench my hand free from his grasp. Perhaps it was my courage to speak to him, or perhaps it was something else entirely, but Alpha Chester finally stopped and turned to me. His fingers tightened around my alr
CHAPTER SIXAlina's POVThe ride from Alpha Chester's house all the way back home felt like slow torture to me. I sat all the way through it, fuming profusely. My foot was tapping away on the floor of the carriage as my mind reeled from all the events of today. So quickly—in the space of a day, Nora had stolen my man. And not just that, she had cleverly forced him to consummate the union and get bound to her forever. It was like sorcery, even to my own eyes.I could feel Father's gaze upon me as he sat across the carriage. "Alina, you would do well to calm down!" He ordered."I would not calm down, father!" I snapped back. "Not until this is fixed, somehow."Immediately the carriage stopped before our house, I darted out, not waiting for Father. I stormed into our house, a tempest of anger and frustration brewing within me. I could hear Father following closely behind, his footsteps thundering through the house. The living room soon became a space for my seething emotions as I paced
NORA'S POV"You scheming, backstabbing scum!" Alina continued to scream. "You worthless runt of a wolf!"I couldn't reply her. All that came out of me were the tears that streamed down my face at her words. The things she was saying to me hit me like bricks against my fragile, ceramic heart. I had thought that she would somehow be able to forgive me, but all hope of that was lost now."Coward!" My father spat at me, his lips curled in disdain. He stood by the window, peering out at the carriage I had brought with me. "You even brought the royal guard with you, no? Too scared to come here on your own, aren't you?""Royal guard or not, I swear on the Goddess I'll tear her to shreds this instant!" Alina snarled. Her grip on my throat remained unrelenting as she hissed, "What are you looking for in our house, Nora? Are you here to do more damage than you've already done to my future? Are you here to gloat, to laugh and mock me, rub your victory in my face perhaps?"I struggled against her
.Nora's POVJonas led me out of my parents' house, his hand gently supporting me as I winced from the pain of the claw wounds on my face. The morning air was chilly, and my heart felt even colder. The broken pieces of my world and my heart seemed to scatter further with every step we took away from that house.I couldn't understand why Alina couldn't see my side of the story. Her rage and resentment had clouded her judgment, and she was blind to the fact that I had never wanted any of this. How could I explain to Alina that I had been thrust into a situation I couldn't control by the Alpha? Now my own sister was my greatest enemy, and I was helpless to change that.Jonas spoke up the moment we stepped away from the house, his voice full of disapproval. "Luna, I understand that you want to see your parents after everything that had happened these past few days. I understand that you want to set things straight with your sister."I glanced up at him, trying to ignore the pain wracking
Nora's POVAlpha Chester held on to my hand, leading me towards his chambers. I struggled with mixed emotions as we walked—I didn't know if I should be happy that he wasn't too angry, or if I should be worried. But his silence was scary and relieving at the same time.As the alpha led me through the dimly lit corridors of the pack house, his grip on my hand was firm, almost possessive. I had expected a much worse reaction to both my disobedience and the wounds on my face. My heart still pounded in my chest from the intensity of his rage back in the throne room. I had been terrified, my thoughts racing, and all I had wanted was to flee the room as fast as my legs could carry me.But then, when he had held my jaw in his large, powerful hand and inspected my wounds with a gentleness that contrasted with his earlier anger, I felt safe. Protected. I could still feel the graze of his fingers on my cheek, brushing away the trail of blood that had been running down my face. And at that moment
Nora's POVMy father's eyes fell on me, and I felt an insatiable anger fill me up from within.Suddenly, all I wanted was for this man to pay for every single thing he made me go through. I remembered the look of satisfaction I had seen on his face, as I had cried and groveled at his feet on that fateful day, when he'd thrown me out of his house. But the wheels had turned now. He was in my shoes now, and I would make sure he experienced the pain I had gone through as well.Or even worse.I understood that I was not his daughter, but what I did not understand was how I came to be in his house in the first place. How had I escaped the massacre that Jacob had done on my family, and how had I gotten to this vile man's household? However, all that was pushed to the back of my mind as I watched a fleeting look of fear pass across his face."Nora?" He called out, as though I was an apparition, and calling my name would dismiss me. "Surprised to see me, aren't you, Elder Lyall?" Goddess, how
Chester's POVAll of a sudden, Nora was standing before me, and it felt as though all my troubles were dissipating into the air.My hands darted forward, as though I was trying to catch air, and my mouth hung open. I could not believe my eyes. Was I dreaming? Was the alcohol finally kicking in and I was imagining things?"Nora...." I whispered again. She smiled as I called her name. Oh, that smile. How I had missed it so much!I felt my wolf jump in excitement before me. In the space of a few seconds, my eyes cleared, and I saw Nora standing before me, live and in person."I'm here, Chester." She whispered. I watched as a tear fell from her eyes, and something within me shattered into a million pieces. I stumbled forward, kicking my goblet aside. Finally, reaching before her, I stopped again."What are you doing...." I stammered. "Why are you here? Where have you been?"A million questions and more chased each other in my head. Nora's smile fell for a moment. "It is a long story, Ch
Nora's POVI walked the rest of the way to the packs border, trying to blend into the shadows that surrounded me. The moon was high in the sky by now, and I guessed that it was midnight already. On and on I walked, until finally, I got to the river that divided Moon Gold Pack from Wolf Claw Pack. I felt a tugging in my heart, and Chester immediately came to mind.Even though we were estranged from each other, I still missed him terribly. How I craved for the little moments that we'd shared. It was appalling how, in the space of a few months, this man whom I had hated with every passionate bone in me, had slowly grown to become an integral part of my life.I still hadn't forgiven him for pushing me out of his pack all those weeks. I still hadn't forgiven him for thinking the worst of me, but deep down, I could not deny that I missed my fated mate.I stopped in front of the river, contemplating how to cross to the other side. The bridge that would have helped me was broken, and the only
Nora's POVThe moment I confirmed that he was dead, I slowly rose to my feet. I kept my eyes on him all through, half expecting him to open his eyes and stare right through me.I waited for a few seconds, but it felt like several eternities. I had to make it look as though he wasn't truly dead.Crouching beside him, I placed both hands underneath his armpits and lifted him up. He was extremely heavy, the brute of a man!Wuth several grunts and heaving, I placed him on the bed. Finally, I stared at hid unmoving body and smiled to myself. If only he knew that I would be his undoing, he would not have taken a liking to me, would he?I rearranged his clothes, placing a folded piece of cloth against his neck to hide the gaping hole in there. I arranged his hands around him to give off the impression that he was asleep, then I took several steps backwards.Perfect, I thought. Save for the unusual paleness of his skin, he truly looked like he was fast asleep.Suddenly, I heard several steps
Nora's POVMy eyes caught a platter of cut apples, lying on a table by my side. Right beside the platter was a small, sheathed dagger.I narrowed my eyes as curiosity got the better of me. Slowly, I laid down the picture frame in my hands, then reached out to pick up the dagger. I pulled the dagger out of its scabbard and turned it in my hands, momentarily awed as it caught the sunlight at almost impossible angles. I immediately knew it was made of dragonblade, one of the strongest steels known to werewolves. The hilt was studded with several tiny rubies, but was built of pure, solid gold. On the hilt was emblazoned the initials Y.L; this dagger once belonged to my mother. It gave me a tiny comfort to know that I was holding something that once belonged to one of my parents."Hmm..." I murmured, sizing the dagger up against my hand. It was very small: not nearly as big as my entire hand, but sharp enough to do damage.I smiled to myself, a sinister fire burning within me. Sinking thi
Nora's POV"Who is there?!" One of the guards called out.Sarah and I froze, then exchanged terrified glances. Oh, Goddess! What would happen if we were discovered? I knew that we would immediately be taken to Alpha Jacob, and there was no questioning what he would do to us to punish us."Oh, we're done for!" Sarah wailed, quite loudly."Oh, keep your voice low!" I snapped. "Let's leave before they notice people are here." I pulled her hand as we scurried towards the door. But as Sarah and I hurried toward the exit, we found ourselves face-to-face with the guards already inside the dimly lit Black Door Room. In a quick decision, we stood perfectly still, hoping the shadows would conceal our presence.Pressing ourselves against the darkened corner, I held my breath, praying that the guards wouldn't notice us. Their looming silhouettes moved through the room, their voices echoing in the hushed space."Why's this door open?" one guard's inquiry reverberated in the chamber's silence. We h
Nora's POV.As I dressed up, I kept my mind resolute on the fact that I would find that door, whether Sarah helped me out or not. Julius' words kept ringing in my ears, giving me the courage I desperately needed.Sarah fetched a simple gray dress from a chest on the far end of the room—it was obvious that Alpha Jacob had stocked this room full of dresses for me, in case I happened to change my mind about marrying him."Here, Luna Nora," she murmured as she handed me the dress. Her eyes were averted, head downcast. I knew, deep down that Sarah wanted to help, but she was scared of the consequences that would follow if someone found out.I couldn't blame her. If I was in her shoes, I would be scared too."Thank you, Sarah." I murmured, accepting the gray dress. I slipped it on and fastened the buttons myself. Then I turned back to her. "Do you have a black cloak anywhere around this room?""Um...yes." Sarah replied. "Alpha Jacob's former wife used to keep one for special occasions, whe
Nora's POVThe smile on Alpha Jacob's face faded slowly; it was clear that my abrupt change of heart had caught him off guard."Are you....are you certain about this, Nora?" Alpha Jacob asked, his voice laced with a hint of disbelief. "You've changed your mind?"No! My heart screamed. But I met his gaze firmly. "Yes," I replied, my voice resolute.A smile, bright and triumphant, crept onto Alpha Jacob's face, illuminating his features. He motioned to his guards. "Let her out!" He ordered, then cackled like a witch. "She is to be my wife! Finally, my dear Nora is to be my wife and Luna!"As the heavy metal door creaked open and the guards escorted me out, a whole storm of conflicting emotions engulfed me. My heart still ached for Julius, who had selflessly guided and supported me. I felt the weight of my failure to rescue him in his darkest hour.He had helped me throughout my stay in the dungeons. And now, when he needed my help the most, I was utterly powerless to help him.Walking a
Nora's POVI sighed, turning back to Julius. The first hurdle was over, finally!"That was stressful. Eh, Julius?" I asked.Julius, who was slurping the last dregs of soup away, looked up. "Ah, yes, Nora. You did a good job."I nodded. I felt braver than I had been days ago, when thosw guards had dragged me all the way down here. It was as though in the space of a few days, my life had changed in drastic ways. And indeed, it had.I had been chased out of my former pack in shame. I had been locked in a room for an entire week, existing on nothing but porridge. I had made a friend in the form of a lone man in a dingy dungeon, discovered secrets and uncovered several lies and truths about my life. And now, I was facing the next hurdle in my journey head on.I was going to face the one man who had made my life a total, living hell."Do you think the guards would listen to me and tell Alpha Jacob about my offer?" I asked.Julius shrugged. "That is left for us to see. Though, I am sure that
