I was summoned to my father's office early this morning to meet with a visiting Alpha from a nearby pack.
He's given me the lecture about being polite and respectful, as if I'm five years old again and likely to embarrass him by saying something stupid.
A knock comes at the door, and Gene bows to my father before showing in a man around my father's age and a blonde girl who shares his almost translucent blue eyes.
"Get out, now." Kade, my wolf growls angrily in my head when the girl smiles shyly at me.
I've got a terrible feeling about this and am about to get up when my father's hand clamps down on my arm.
"Sit down boy." His voice bellows in my mind, clearly feeling confident that I'm not going to lose my temper in front of the visitors. I'm not so sure, Kade's desperate to get as far away from whatever this is as possible.
My father's hand grips harder and when I look at him, he has a smile fixed on his face, greeting the visitor warmly, as though they're great friends.
"Alpha Godwin, so good of you to visit us. I trust your journey went well." My father's voice is smooth, calm and friendly, the perfect image of an Alpha. "Young Cateline, you get more beautiful every time we meet. I was so sorry to hear about your mate's passing."
"We need to leave." Kade is almost snarling at this point and it's taking everything in me to stop him taking control and running from the room.
"Cain, why don't you show Cateline around the pack while Alpha Godwin and I talk business." He gives my arm a firm squeeze, letting me know this isn't a request.
"Sure." I stand, striding from the room with Cateline surprisingly able to keep pace beside me.
We pass the training fields, the east woods and head towards the lake in relative silence, the only conversation is when I point out landmarks and she replies politely.
"I'm sorry about taking up your time." She says suddenly, her back to me while she stares out across the water. "Our father's have an idea that we could become a couple, since we have both lost our mates. I'm guessing from your reaction to me that you had no idea and to be honest I'm glad. It's far too soon for me to even contemplate being with someone else. I heard you'd known one another your whole lives?"
"Yes." My voice comes out hoarse and I have no desire to open up about Tegwen to anyone, let alone this woman I've never met before.
"My Harry was from my pack, but I barely knew him more than thinking he was attractive for years." She turns to look at me, tears in her eyes but a small smile on her face. "He was a bit older than me. Popular. Kind. Handsome. All the girl's fancied him so, even though I'm an Alpha's daughter, I never expected him to notice me. I didn't know but he was hovering outside my birthday party, waiting for midnight to come, hoping he would be my mate. He was killed four months ago in an attack on our borders. My father suspects it may be the same wolves that killed your mate, that they're targeting Alpha mates, but I've not heard of any others being killed, so I think it's just a coincidence."
"She talks too much." Kade grumbles in my mind and although I agree with him, at least she's talking about herself and not about Tegwen.
"My mark disappearing was like losing him twice. I know that must sound ridiculous." She rubs her neck, then looks up at me as though seeking reassurance but I don't know what to say, my mark's still there, as fresh as the night Tegwen put it there. "I thought your mate was killed nearly a year ago?"
"Nine months, or so my father tells me." I can't help staring at her neck, it's completely clear, as though there was never a mark in the first place. When I finally drag my eyes from her neck to her face, her mouth is open, her hand over it and her eyes wide in shock. "When did your mark go?"
"The first full moon after he died." Her voice is barely a whisper. I think back to my father, trying to visualise the mark on his neck, but I can't. I've avoided everyone except for my father and Darius ever since it happened, and no one's ever mentioned that my mark should be long gone by now, so there's only one possible explanation.
Tegwen is still alive! I need to find her!
"Thank you." I don't wait for Cateline to respond, I just shift and start running towards the border where she supposedly died, as if there might be some clue still there after all this time.
There's nothing around, but now I know she's alive, nothing will stop me finding her, so I keep going, past the border and towards the next pack.
"Single Rogue sighted on the Moors. Tracked scent to a house nearby but recently vacated. Human scents also present." The alert comes through while I'm running, but Kade is no longer interested in that, he's on a mission. An ill thought through one, but he needs this and he might find something, so I'll let him run until he exhausts himself, then figure out our next steps.
"Darius, can you deal with the rogue?" I connect with him and then remember Cateline, who's probably still trying to figure out how to get back to the packhouse. "Also, can you send someone to get Alpha Godwin's daughter, Cateline, from the lake. Don't tell my father where I am."
"Already walking her back. She told me what happened. I didn't know about the mark thing either. Are you ok? Where are you?" He's so reliable, he'll be a brilliant Beta when my father finally hands over control of the pack. And he'll have to, as soon as I find Tegwen, he'll have no excuse not to.
"Looking for Tegwen. Kade needs to run, I'll try to be back by tomorrow. Monday at the latest." I can feel the connection getting fainter, so I close it off, settling in and trying to map out our route so that we can pause at the next pack's borders and request permission to cross without causing too much of a scene.
~*~
We ran for hours with only a few brief stops to speak to wolves in the packs we needed to cross. Thankfully, our reputation precedes us and they were more than willing to let us pass through with only a small escort to ensure continued favourable pack relations.
Kade doesn't seem to be running out of steam yet and I'm concerned about how far we've gone without a plan.
"We need to go back and investigate the border more thoroughly." I tell him, but he ignores me, his pace steady, as though I've not even spoken. "Kade, turn around, this won't find her."
"You don't know that. We might pick up her scent." He sniffs the air to demonstrate, but there's nothing, obviously. "We should have been questioning the Rogue's, not just killing them."
"Then turn back, we'll find some nearby and see what they know." He skids to a stop, mud flying through the air and the wolf escorting us flips around in confusion before following us back the way we've just come.
As though he's got an abundance of energy, Kade sprints back towards home, ignoring my father calling us as we get closer and instead sniffing the air for Rogue's.
He finds a scent nearby, following it to a cave about a mile outside of our border and this time he's methodical when he sees the three males, sleeping in their human forms beside a fire.
Injuring them quickly, just enough to immobilise them, but leaving their vocal cords unharmed.
Once he's satisfied that they're going nowhere, he allows us to shift so I can talk to them.
"What the fuck? We're outside your borders." The largest one spits, cradling his shattered legs into place while he heals.
"A red headed woman was attacked on our borders around nine months ago, taken. Where is she?" The man shakes his head, flinching back, his face contorting in pain when I move closer and push on his knee. "Fuck. Stop. Please. We don't know anything." He breathes heavily through his teeth as I slowly increase the pressure. The sharp bone showing against skin. "We only moved down here two months ago. There aren't any others in this area, it was meant to be safe. We don't want to cross your territory, we just want to live here freely. No trouble. I swear. Please, stop."
"He's telling the truth." Kade growls. I reluctantly remove my hand, his instinct is to kill the man, to kill all of them, but the knowledge that Tegwen's still alive has me thinking more clearly.
"I'll let you live on one condition." I tell him, looking at the other two who are holding their legs carefully in the same way as the first. They look at me, waiting, knowing they have very little choice. "Find out where the red headed woman is. I want her back. Immediately."
"There ain't no one left in the area. You killed them all." One of the men pipes up. He's the smallest of the three, dark blonde hair and a scar running down his cheek which surprises me, it must have been a horrific wound to have left a scar, but then, it's well known rogue's live a difficult life. It's unnatural to live outside a pack, our wolves need the company of others, so those that choose to do so must have a very good reason. They're not welcomed by many packs, if any, which means they struggle for food on the outskirts, fighting amongst themselves and with border patrols for any good piece of land.
"You find the redhead anyway you can. Tegwen Leila Farr. You find her for me and I'll ensure you can live here for however long you choose." All three of them perk up, nodding their heads in unison.
"We're going to find her." I tell Kade as I make my way back to my room.
I haven't slept here in months, but I keep the clothes she was wearing the day she disappeared there.
Disappeared not died!
I'm relieved but frustrated, I should have known this before, I shouldn't have just accepted she was gone. Anything could be happening to her and I've done nothing to try to find her. For months I've just assumed she's dead.
"Your father is furious." Darius appears in the doorway of my room and I shrug my shoulders, knowing he won't do anything to me now, especially without Gene there to stop me from killing him.
"You didn't tell him she was still alive, did you?" I snap my head in his direction and he shakes his head, slowly. He won't meet my eye, there's something he's not telling me that he thinks he should. "What's going on?"
"Nothing. I don't think, anyway. Give me until tomorrow to work it out and I'll tell you. I just wanted to check in and see that you're ok." He rolls his lips into a thin line, letting me know that whatever he's hiding, it's big. But, I trust him, so I'll give him the day if that's what he wants. I'm more interested in finding Tegwen anyway. "Did you eat?"
"No. I'm not hungry." He scoffs, leaving the room and returning with two plates piled high with food.
"Eat. Talk. We'll plan." I nod, grabbing the box of her clothes and spreading them out on the floor, going over every inch of them to see if I missed anything at all, while telling him about what happened with Cateline and the Rogues.
He nods, but he's distracted and yet again, I'm wondering what he's thinking about, but he just tells me to give him another day to figure it all out.
I'm wondering if he's found his mate. Perhaps the rogue he dealt with today, or one of the humans in the house. It's unusual but not unheard of to have a human mate. It certainly complicates the process because while they're affected by the bond, they don't feel it like we do, and the knowledge of werewolves can frighten them away.
The more I think about it, the more this makes sense and I feel bad for him, so I won't push it, instead, I focus on Tegwen, but the only scents that still linger on her clothes are hers and my father's, which only further enrages Kade.
"Why don't you go find those rogue's again tomorrow, see if they know anything? I bet they'll be searching the minute they heal enough to move with the promise of a permanent home." Darius suggests and I nod, boxing up Tegwen's clothes before Kade goes after my father again.
Apologies for the long delay - I was focusing on other books, however, this one, along with Jake, Abaddon and Calista, should be being updated regularly from now on. Thank you so much for your patience. NB. If you read the previous chapters prior to 12/02/2022, they have been altered only slightly. I had to remove the book and re-add it to my library to see the updated chapters! Thank you again and hope you enjoy!
I grip my mum's hand as she walks me into the classroom on the first day of school."Don't go Mummy." I whisper as she pulls her hand from mine."I love you sweet pea and I'll be back soon." She kisses my forehead and smiles down at me. My eyes burn with tears when the teacher, who's name I can't remember, puts her hand on my shoulder and guides me towards a group of girls playing with dolls.I don't like dolls, but I don't tell her this. Instead, I sink down on the carpet, hugging the one she gave me to my chest and hoping my mum will come and get me soon.A boy trips over my foot while racing against another one and lands in front of me. His golden brown eyes are filled with such mischief that I knew instantly I wanted him
"Flame, move your ass, my dead grandma could be up here faster than you." I turn around from the top of the wooden wall and grin at her.Her beautiful green eyes twinkle as I reach down to help her up.Never one to be beaten, she jumps at a rope just off to one side and swings herself up and over, tapping my head as she sails past me before landing on the other side."Come on, don't want to get beaten by a little girl, do you?" She cackles as she sprints away to the next obstacle and I jump down, landing with a grunt as I push myself to chase after her.At seventeen, I've grown bulky from endless training, whereas Flame is muscular and lean, making her faster than me initially, but my stamina is greater and it doesn't take me
The water is freezing and the wind is blowing strong across the sand, which explains why there are only a few dog walkers scattered across the beach and no one else. The cold weather doesn't deter us though. Channelling our inner children, we make sandcastles, bury our feet and paddle in the sea, ankle deep until our feet go numb. It's the most fun I've had in ages and only the mouthwatering scent of the fish and chip shop is enough to drag me away. As we eat, we watch a pair of dogs chasing each other around the beach, the few people around walking along, stopping to chat and then moving on, all of them look as happy and relaxed as I feel. "I might move here after graduation." I laugh, spearing a chip onto my little wooden fork and biting into it. I'm on
Never did I ever even consider that she left of her own free will. Never did I think that she would have started a life somewhere else, without me.This is not the girl I grew up with! The girl that I love would never have left me!"Aaah." I scream, tossing the desk across the room with one hand. It slams into the wall and cracks, falling on the floor in a broken mess of splintered wood.Kade has retreated into the furthest corner of my mind since I left the scene without Flame. Without even speaking to her or checking she was ok, he wanted to bring her here and make up for the time we've missed. He's not considering the fact that not only has she been alive this entire time, but that she's been happily living somewhere else, making new friends and doing whatever with whoever, wh
Ok, so I'm officially freaking out. Or going crazy. Maybe I banged my head a little too hard when those blokes tried to kidnap me last night because Coal is sitting right beside me. Coal. The guy who lives inside my imagination. I have no idea what is going on!Maybe I'm in a coma? That would make sense, because everyone seems remarkably calm about the attempted kidnapping last night, I'm pretty sure we should all be making a bigger deal out of that and now… now, the guy who I have literally been dreaming about my entire life, just walks into the house like he actually exists in real life.Sure he's referring to himself by a different name and sure it could be a massive coincidence, some kind of beautiful doppelganger but everything is the same as Coal. From his voice, his dominating aura, the way he walks, even the way his tongue darts out to touc
'Why are we leaving her? Go back.' Kade is stampeding around my mind from the moment we left Flame on her doorstep, trying to take control to march back inside that house and drag her home with us, like some sort of caveman. He doesn't understand that she's effectively human now and to do so would likely terrify her and we'd lose her forever. 'We need to take it slow.' I reply, grinning to myself as I remember her face when I taunted her on the Tree Surfers course. Whatever happened to make her forget who she is, hasn't changed her personality, she still bites when challenged. 'We're still her favourite scent.' Kade pushes the beautiful image of her, eyes closed, breathing in the smell of the woods tonight. I couldn't stop myself, Kade either, we pounced and she responded exactly as she used to, so she must still feel the bond, even if she doesn't know what it is that she's feeling. I need to find out what happened to her, how to help her remember who she is. Her parents will want
"We could leave now?" The words come out of my mouth in a rush of excitement, the cold air whipping around my naked form as I pull away from the naked man by my side."Is this what you want? We'll never be able to come back. What about your family? Your friends?" Coal places his hands on my shoulders and turns me to face him, leaves and twigs stuck in his hair and on his skin."We'll stay in touch, I taught my mum how to video call and Chloe is so wrapped up in Jaden, she won't miss me too much." I bite my lip, hoping he'll agree to run away with me, to be free of his father so we can finally be happy."Ok, let's do it." He kisses me quickly then hurriedly throws his clothes on while I do the same.We sprint back to the car and Coal drops me off at home, kissing me again and promising to be back within an hour. Once indoors, I creep upstairs as quickly and quietly as possible so I don't wake my family. I'll miss them but I can't stay and I hope they'll forgive me for running away in
The last two mornings have felt like a dream, waking up next to Flame was something I never thought I'd get to do again and after so many lonely months, I won't ever take it for granted. Darius and I left to check in with my father yesterday, because even though Darius covered for me and no one else knows about Flame's situation, my father seems to have a sixth sense when something is going on. The meeting only took a little over an hour, but it was excruciating being away from her for so long and unable to contact her. Tomorrow is going to be worse because I have to escort Cateline around the pack while he meets with Alpha Godwin, the two of them are still trying to forge ahead with this alliance, regardless of our feelings on the subject. I tried to refuse, but Gene unexpectedly spoke up, telling me that my father is hoping to pass the Alphaship over to me sooner rather than later and although he won't force me to take Cateline as my Luna, he's hoping I'll be able to create a str
It's been seven months since we left Ekron and Merida's ceremony. My parents are not only refusing to believe she was working against us, but that she's dead altogether. It's gotten so bad that Amara has had to move out and into the packhouse. My mother is convinced she'll find Merida and has been searching every day for her. We took her to where it all happened, but instead of helping them accept it and move on, it just gave them a place to base their search. Coal is reluctant to separate the packs until Maloney is found, or so he says, there's something else going on in his head that he's not sharing with me and I'm letting it go for the time being, if he's not sharing it means he hasn't worked it out yet, so I won't push him until he's ready. It's at least giving me the opportunity to get to know the potential Alpha's a bit better and hopefully it will help maintain pack relations when the time comes. The would-be Alpha's aren't pushing the situation, I'm guessing they've realised
Flame and Ekron's wolves circle one another, Onyx is silent, assessing him as he snarls and snaps at her, waiting for the best moment to make her move. When she does, sinking her teeth into his neck and digging her claws into his side, I notice movement in the crowd and ready myself to intercept anyone trying to intervene, but instead I see a slow trickle of deserters slipping away to become rogues. The remaining individuals glare at them, spitting out words like "traitor" as they pass."Cain, how's it going?" Gene links with me and I can tell by his tone that something is wrong."Flame's fighting Ekron, about a third of the pack have left to become rogues. What's going on with you?" I link back, my eyes following the fight in front of me. Ekron is good, he must have been trained well, but he's got obvious tells, which Onyx is taking full advantage of and by the sounds of the crowd, everyone can tell she's winning."We've found the humans. It's not good Cain, we've got Doctor Fayer th
As soon as Coal told me about Ekron and Maloney, I tried to mindlink Amara, telling her so she can go to Merida and hoping to cause a distraction so I can get to speak to Ollie. The angry screams of Merida and rush of footsteps past our room gives me my opportunity, Coal stays in the room to cover for me and I run up the corridor, following the vague scent of him to lead me to the right place.Coal said there was a guard in his room, but fortunately for me, the guard must have been one of the ones to run towards the chaos, become the doors slightly open and Ollie is on his own inside."Leila." He greets me happily, as though we're still at uni and I've just popped over to say hi. He catches himself and bows. "Sorry, Alpha Tegwen.""Ollie, what are you doing here?" I scan the corridor carefully before closing the door."You know why, it's all I want." He tells me, lowing his voice as though if any wolves were around they wouldn't hear him. "Don't worry though, as soon as I've got my wo
We're being followed, it's obvious from the moment we get close to our destination. No one is visible but the scent of wolf is too strong to just be a territory thing.Tegwen looks at me, sensing it too and then we look back at Levi who is already loading weapons for Tegwen's friends. He's cracking jokes with the humans, his humour belying the serious warrior underneath, constantly alert and assessing his surroundings. His eyes meet mine for the briefest of seconds and flick towards my window. When I look, it initially seems to be just a dark section of forest, but, deep within the shadows, I can see the dark outline of a wolf running alongside the car."We're surrounded." Levi mindlinks me, while simultaneously handing a shotgun to Gale and showing her how to load the cartridges."Now, don't point this at anyone you want to see again. Even wolves can't recover when they resemble Swiss cheese." He jokes and Gale laughs, nodding her head as she looks over the gun in her hand, oblivious
"Ollie, no I can't." I say as gently as I can, while studying the map on Alpha Abaddon's office wall - I can't seem to call it my office yet, at least not in my own head, it doesn't yet feel real."But why not?" He actually stomps his foot like a child having a tantrum and I'm surprised, I've never seen this side of him before."Ok, aside from the fact we are currently in the middle of a war, it's also too dangerous, you could die." I drag my eyes away from the map long enough to look at him."Emery was fine and I'm stronger than her, even when she isn't injured, if she could survive it then I'm bound to." A knock on my door has us both turning to see Anastasia striding inside, an earnest look on her face."Look, Emery was a chance we took because she was dying anyway, we would never have considered it if we had any other choice and have you seen her? She is not 'fine' at all, she's struggling and terrified of the ch…""But that's because it was never something she considered. I want
We were foolish to think it would be over this early, that it would end with the death of Eligor and his followers would fade back to wherever they came from. Samuel is inconsolable and if it weren't for his desire for revenge, I'm not sure he wouldn't have ended his own life by now. As it is, we've had to get Flame's parents to take Amara home because his wolf seems unable to separate twin from twin, projecting his fury at Merida onto her and demanding her death in recompense for the loss of his mate.In the meantime we've sent scouts out to search the area for any signs of Merida or Ekron or any gatherings of any description. Thankfully Flame's parents have also stepped in to help Emery with her wolf, because Flame is torn between her friend and leading the now far too large pack."We found marks up by the Western border but they're odd. Too obvious, like they've been left there on purpose." Darius pulls up a picture of some slices in a tree, swiping through them all and each is sl
When I wake up, I instantly know something is wrong, I'm alone in a hospital room and though I can feel Coal is close and obviously there should be staff around, the sound proofing means I can't hear anything going on outside of my four walls."Find Coal, something is going on." Onyx confirms the tickle of fear running down my spine, so I carefully remove the tubes from my body and sit up, tentatively feeling the stitches running along my stomach. The wound seems to have healed, but it still feels a little bruised when I move and a jolt of worry has me placing my hand lower, where my baby is."She's fine, luckily your sister went too high." Coal pushes open the door, his eyes raking all over me, dark circles under them show me the stress and exhaustion he's trying to hide."What's going on?" I notice he closes the door fully behind him, closing out the brief snippet of the chaotic noise outside."How are you feeling?" He asks instead and now I know it's bad."I'm fine, now what's goin
Flame clings tightly to my hand as we join the crowds, all walking slowly through the roads. Darius appears beside me, escorting her human friends who have been allowed to witness tonight's event. I'm a little concerned about how excited Ollie seems to be by everything, he's not changed his mind about wanting to become one of us, but that's a problem for another time and he is at least trying to be respectful by reigning in his excitement to just wide eyed staring. Gene and Levi have gone all out for tonight's funeral celebrations. They just have involved pretty much the entire pack to have gotten all of this done in such a short time. Flowers and lights lead from every road up to the clearing and a stage has been erected to one side of the numerous bonfires. Photographs line the stage, my father amongst them, and even though I was there, it hits harder to see the smiling faces of those we lost. We exchange brief words with those we pass, accepting condolences and offering them back,
There's so much to do and not enough time to do it, I don't know how Alpha Abaddon ever got to leave his office. It feels like every other minute I've got someone trying to contact me, directly inside my mind too, it's not like when I thought I was human and could pretend I'd left my mobile on charge if I didn't want to answer it, no, this lot have a direct dial straight to my mind and there's no answer phone or text option. My parents have been respectful and I think that's only because Samuel went over there late last night to explain the situation, but they're amongst the cacophony of voices jostling for priority inside my head, not only because they know I remember who I am, but also to talk about Merida. I don't know if they know where she is, I can't even consider the fact that they might have known that she was working for Eligor all along and what about Amara? Her twin sister is a traitor, that's going to take some digesting. Unless she already knew? In which case she could b
