AIDAN

“Eight years ago was a long time, man,” Jace said from the other end of the phone as I buried my head in my desk, going through the contracts that needed my review and signatures. “Hell, this was more than eight years. It’s close to nine, if not over..”

“So what’s your point?” I asked gruffly.

“It’s going to be so difficult, if not impossible to get any information as to what happened with Tara on that day. Don’t forget that to every other person, it was just a normal day. It could be that she just packed up her things and left after you didn’t want her. Did you think about that?” Jace asked.

I shook my head.

That was possible, but when there was history like this surrounding what happened with Tara, something told me that my father was involved.

I knew it.

Most of it was my fault, and I could have avoided it if I tried a little harder, but if my father had found out, then he would have wanted to harm Tara, and if she was aware and ran because of that, the trauma from it may be

TARAAlthough the call with Aidan yesterday felt rushed since he had to go attend to what I was sure was a knock on his door, I couldn’t help but feel like part of the reason why Aidan didn’t disclose that he was coming back was my fault.I hoped he didn’t think that I didn’t want to talk to him, but it might have sounded that way. I had to save Nadia from a bad fall, so whatever I was saying got stuck, and he could have taken it to mean that I didn’t want to speak with him.Well, he was here now, and that was some relief for what it was worth.Aidan shook his head in response to my last question.“Nothing happened. I’ve gotten what I needed, so I didn’t have to stay away anymore. I’m right where I should be.”I nodded. “Okay then. Welcome back.”“I’ve got some things in the car. Will you come look?” There was hope shining in Aidan’s eyes, and for the fact that Nadia was already tugging Aidan in the direction of the door, I nodded.“Okay, but let me just close up.”“You’re done here?”

TARAI hadn’t felt like this in a long time. Like all the problems in the world just faded away and all that was left was peace.Aidan asked us if we wanted to eat, and even if Nadia hadn’t been the first to oblige, I didn’t think I was going to object. After being gifted a full trunk of gifts, we had a fun evening with Aidan, and when Nadia’s strength reserve started to run low, we took her back home to Esme’s where both she and Jenna were waiting. Too bad Nadia would be out in a couple of hours, and movie night would be just for Esme and Jenna.“So this errand you’re running, am I allowed in on what it is?” Aidan asked as he steered the wheel past the houses. We were heading away from our home now.“About that…” I drawled. The cat had to come out of the bag eventually. “I’m just getting the last of Nadia’s things from her room at your place. We moved back home.”He didn’t try to hide his disappointment in the way his face fell or the way his muscles loosened on the wheel.“I didn’t

TARA“Aidan, love, I-I wasn’t sure… so I went to see the pack doctor. I’m two weeks gone,” I said my voice barely above a whisper. “I’m pregnant.”My heartbeat thrashed in my ears as I finally found the courage to tell him. I was beyond terrified, but I was sure that Aidan and I would go through this together. After all, he was the Alpha of Pack Attica.Aidan looked up from his phone, and the color completely drained from his face. “No, you’re not.”My mouth fell open. What?“I-I am,” I said, fumbling through my pocket for the picture the doctor gave me of the baby. “I’m preg-”“What the heck, Tara! Stop saying that. You’re not pregnant for gods sake! Are you that pathetic to lie with something as dire as this?”I flinched at his tone. Aidan was never mean to me. He never raised his voice or used foul language at me.“Why would I lie? I swear by the moon, it’s yours,” I pleaded, tears filling the back of my eyelids, blurring my vision. With fists clenched and veins bulging from every

TARABy the time I got to our house at the edge of the pack, my parents were in the living room of the small apartment, so I ran up to my room, so they wouldn’t question me or see my puffed face.Kayla arrived barely ten minutes after I did, and I was temporarily relieved.“I’m pregnant,” I confessed, picking my cuticles as I paced the length of my small room with her sitting on the bed.Kayla blinked in rapid succession. “Wh-what?”“I am…”Kayla’s words could pass for a scream. “You’re. Fucking. Pregnant!?” My heart skipped, and my eyebrows jumped as I flew to the bed to seal my hand over her mouth.“Shhh! My parents could hear.”Even if my parents were omegas too, they might still hear without the heightened senses.“I’m sorry,” she said, tears brimming in her eyes as she understood the gravity of the situation.“It’s Aidan’s, and he doesn’t believe me. I’m finished.” Fresh tears leaked from my eyes, and Kayla wrapped her hands around me.“What can I do?” She asked after I pulled a

TARARiding up to Aidan’s room floor, questions flooded my mind, along with an uneasy feeling that clawed at my chest, but I pushed it all to the side. My skin was prickly too, my head was pounding with a terrible headache, and I said a quick prayer. “Please, moon goddess, let Aidan be okay,” I prayed. The hallway was quiet in the dead of the night, and when I made a fist with my trembling and sweaty palm to knock, the door creaked open on its accord.Dread curled in my stomach, bringing a sour taste to my already dry mouth, but I stepped inside, regardless.Everywhere was dark, save for the dim lamp on the tabletop. From that, I made out Aidan’s form, sound asleep under the rumpled covers, but it did nothing to dull the sour feeling in my chest. As if noticing my presence in his sleep, Aidan’s eyes peeled open.“Tara?”“It’s me, baby.” I moved on instinct.“Goddess, so help me if you take a step closer, peasant.” Aidan sat up, and from his icy tone, the sleep was gone from his eyes.

TARAMy eyes fluttered open, and a blinding light pierced through, causing me to shut them back with a wince. I tried to remember where I was.“Try not to move,” a soft voice said from beside me. I whipped my head to the side and a warm-looking woman in her forties was smiling down at me. A doctor. Where was I? What was…Aidan. Kayla. My wolf. My baby.I gasped as images from my encounter with Kayla rushed to the front of my mind, and I scrambled back in fear.As if I was on cue, pain shot through my entire body, making me cry out.“Calm down, miss. You’re still in critical condition.”“My baby,” I gasped, tears rapidly brimming in my eyes.“Is a fighter. Your baby survived. And so did you.”The tears broke free, and I fell back on the bed, gratitude swelling my chest as I cried and thanked the Moon Goddess. I thought I lost my child. How did I think for a second that I could have gone through with terminating it?I looked around the room, and I didn’t expect to see my family or an

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   05: Reunion

TARA Eight Years Later… Even before she voiced her question, I already connected the dots from the pride swirling in her eyes. “So how do you feel?” Jenna asked, carrying way too many labeled boxes on one hand, and easily maneuvering me in the middle of my new diner. “Your dreams are finally coming together. Aren’t you proud?” I rose to full height, abandoning the blue roses I was putting together for the front door, and stared at Jenna for a minute. It only took a second for my answer to take form. Proud would be too much of an understatement. I was freaking ecstatic. I was beyond grateful for the last eight years plus of my life because if anyone had told me this would be my standing in Vermont pack, the place I found myself after everything, I would have hissed in their faces. “Of course I’m proud, Jenna,” I said to my close friend and companion. After Nadia’s birth, Jenna was one of the few people who took me as their responsibility. I was suspicious of her at first,

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   63: Dare I Say

TARAIt was almost the same scenery as the last time Aidan called, which was just yesterday, and again, Nadia was exhausting the heck out of me.But was I complaining? No!Not now, not ever. What did I live for if not to hear those hysterical, contagious, and soul-soothing sounds that were my baby’s laughter? It was a good day, the traffic in the diner had lessened compared to how it was so busy in the morning, so I could give Nadia my undivided attention for the next few minutes.“Okay, Nadia,” I said, imitating a set position of a bull, as though I was about to run into her. Nadia was about ten feet away, and she giggled on taking in my stance, then she imitated one of her own because she knew what was coming next. I was smiling so hard that my teeth were on full display.I continued. “You have twenty minutes until I drop you off with Esme and Aunt Jenna, so that should be enough time for me to show you who’s the boss around here. LITERALLY,” I emphasized, earning another string of

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection    61: My New Wife

AIDANFrom the moment I drove through the borders of Attica pack, I got swarmed with work. I could barely see through the pile of documents that had grown up in my office during my absence, so it was only fitting that I spent the next few days knee-deep in work.I barely ate and had a meager amount of sleep each night, and my routine was working late hours in the office, and returning to my home office to continue from where I stopped.Thankfully, Vermont pack was in good hands as I left things in the care of Jace and Jenna, the lady who didn’t give two shits about me. She was fearless and put the interest of her packmates before others, so I knew that together with Jace, they would be fine until I returned and found a permanent way to run things.Coupled with the fact that I suspected something going on between the two of them—Jace and Jenna—, I was sure they were going to work together just fine.It was a hot Wednesday afternoon, and I was having a meeting with my real estate attorn

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   60: Behind Us

TARAAidan was gone before I knew it, and I couldn’t even say if that was a good thing or a bad thing for me.A part of me fell when I noticed that he wasn’t in the house anymore because we didn’t get to talk much after everything that happened last night, but I guess it was also a good thing as Nadia didn’t see him, and then have a reason to throw tantrums.Nadia had always been a good kid. She had her days when she didn’t agree with me much, or even listen to anyone, as kids normally did, but she never went as far as doing what she did, and still not being accountable for it.I never wanted to make my kid feel scolded, especially when her actions were a result of something as natural as loving her father, but there were things that we could and could not do for the safety and sanity of others. And this was the reason why after breakfast the next day, I sat Nadia down.“Did you enjoy your breakfast, baby?” I was clearing her plates and Nadia was still sitting by the table, barely mov

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   59: It’s Your House

AIDANI was unapologetic about letting the rest of the world burn when it came to Tara and our kid, so one didn’t really need to think too much to guess the kinds of things I would be willing to do when it was them involved. When Tara asked me to help her with Nadia, there was really only one answer, but I couldn’t help the many emotions running through my mind.It was my fault. All of it was my fault.Tara and Nadia had lived in this pack for over eight years, and I’d only been here for weeks, but look how much damage my presence had caused in their lives. They lost their home, Nadia went missing looking for me, and Tara almost lost her life.Goddess.I could feel her limp in my arms, and it felt like I was dying inside.Standing by the entrance door and watching Nadia sleep peacefully on her bed after Tara showed me how to get her ready, I knew that I had to do something differently or risk something much worse happening later. And that started with getting to the root of this godda

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   58: In Her Bed

TARAWe had to wait for Aidan to make some calls to ensure that we were safe to enter the streets before we could leave the hospital. Since we had Nadia now, taking such a risk was out of the question.I didn’t bother speaking to Nadia about her actions right there in the hospital. I needed her to be safe at home first before I would do that.Motherhood did put a test on your patience sometimes.Aidan came back to meet us in the hallway after he had taken his call. We were sitting on one of the benches, and Nadia was snuggled up against me.“We can leave, but it’s a long walk from here, so Jace is bringing the car, and I’ll drive you both back home.”I nodded. “And the StoneWolves?” My voice was small.“They’ve been taken care of. It turned out that they weren’t so much in number, but you know that one StoneWolf is just as dangerous. I’ll meet up with the right people later to discuss and see how we can make something like this never repeat itself,” Aidan assured. “This isn’t a risk a
