AIDAN

Whatever device was placed under my car had a lifeline, and however long that was, it had started counting down already.

Beads of sweat formed across my head, but I didn’t dare release my hands from my deathly grip on the steering wheel in an attempt to wipe it off as I sat frozen on the spot.

“Think, Aidan, think!” I bit out, racking my brain.

The steady beep kept going, and the seconds kept counting down.

Taking deep breaths to calm myself, I put two and two together.

It was most likely an explosive, and disabling it was out of the question. I couldn’t exactly call for help as I didn’t know how much time I had, and for my safety, I had to assume that the slightest movement would trigger the explosive to go off.

I looked around me and exhaled a small breath when I realized that the area where I had parked was farther away from where people walked through.

It boiled down to this.

“No one else is close by, so nobody else can get hurt. I just have to find a way out of here fast en

TARA“So…?”“So, what, Jenna?” I asked over the phone as I made sure that everything we needed was packed into the bag. Nadia and I were spending the rest of our day at the park.“Tell me what the heck you’ve been up to. You sped off right after the party, and I haven't heard from you since then.”I sighed before I spoke again. “I could ask you the same thing, Jenna. I called your supposed duty stand, and they said you never turned in for your shift. Where did you go, huh?”Even though I couldn’t see Jenna, I could feel her shrugging. “Oh, just somewhere totally uninteresting. But I see what you’re trying to do Tara, and I won’t let you. Talk to me, girl. Have you been engaging with him?”It was my turn to shrug. “It was only drinks, and don’t forget it was in a public space.”“Well,” Jenna said. “It was bound to happen at some point. I do not support him, what he did to you, or how he left you both to get here on your own, but you will have to figure things out soon for yourselves an

TARANadia looked between the two of us with expectant eyes, and a fearful thought crossed my mind.I still didn’t completely know why Aidan chose to leave me all those years ago, but now that he was here, Nadia was head over heels for him, and it had just been weeks. What if he left us again? What if things became tough and he decided to break our hearts again? What if he didn’t really want us?The what-ifs multiplied in my mind until Aidan’s voice cut through.“I want to,” he said, responding to my last question, but there was this little voice at the back of my head that didn’t believe that it spanned to all the other what-ifs.As if he was reading my mind, Aidan spoke again. “I want everything. If you would let me.”“Mommy?” Nadia called sweetly, asking for my permission.I couldn’t complain about Aidan being dressed formally because his outfit was casual, yet spoke volumes.“Well, you will have to leave your car because we’re strolling to the park. Can’t ruin all the fun,” I argu

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   32: More Under His Sleeves

AIDANI quickly made my way back to the hotel suite after receiving the call from Jace, and my anger was visible. I wasn’t ready to leave Nadia and Tara just yet, and when Nadia started grumbling about me leaving, I almost said screw whatever Jace needed to tell me.The little time I got to spend with her was unarguably one of the best times of my life. Truth be told, my eight-year-old daughter already had me wrapped around her finger. And spending time in Tara’s presence was something I wanted to continue doing for the rest of my life.Aside from that, Tara also said she had something to tell me, but when she saw the urgency in my movement after the call, she said that it could wait.Whatever Jace had to say had better be so important that the earth would freeze over if he didn’t tell me.Giving the lady at the reception a curt nod, I made my way up to my floor. The elevator ride was quick, and when I stepped into the suite, Jace was there, gulping down the entire content of a glass

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   33: Stand Trial

AIDAN After I found the cleared path that led me away from the city and to the woods, I made sure I didn’t rush my pace and be left with no expanse of land to run when I finally shifted, so I kept my feet light on the ground. Thankfully, Vermont pack had a really large uncharted portion of land that looked like it was reserved for mainly shifting and running. After walking for a few more minutes, I recalled that I was so tense and angry earlier, that I forgot to take a change of clothes along with me. So instead of just letting my wolf out immediately, I took note of the surroundings that I was in and noted how many trees were around me and in what direction they pointed so that I could easily find this spot when I was done running. When I was satisfied that I wouldn’t get lost or misled by my scent that would be all over the place when I finished, I took off my shirt and tucked it behind a tree. My shoes and socks came off next, followed by my accessories. I was left with jus

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   34: How Do You Plead?

TARA The next day, I made my way to the diner in a jolly mood, and even if I didn’t get to my shop to meet any early customers who usually waited to be the first to try our freshly baked goods, I wasn’t bothered. We still had the whole day to sell out. Thoughts of how the previous day was spent filled my mind, and I had to caution myself from overthinking things. I was worried that I didn’t get to tell Aidan what Jenna had told me, but I just hoped that Aidan was in good health. Nadia was so happy after everything yesterday that she fell asleep the moment we got home, and when I woke her up this morning, she got herself ready with a smile and not the usual grumbles. My baby was already in school and I could focus my undivided attention on work till she got back, so I got right into it. I hummed as I got the diner cleaned for the day, set up the tables, and mentally prepared myself for a productive day. Starting with some batter, I baked rounds of lemon muffins that I was sure w

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   35: The Victim Confessed

AIDAN ‘How do I plead to this charge?’ Outright comical. Collin was out of his goddamn mind to think that he had me in a chokehold by his question. He was even more stupid than I thought he was if he believed that his little show of power from the woods last evening was what brought me here. After my run yesterday, I was steaming with fury. I got back to the hotel suite and Jace was still there, and I asked him to do some digging on the girl from the woods. Turns out that my thoughts about her were right, and she was just collateral damage in Collin’s games. Her parents, who were currently locked up somewhere in Collin’s pack, were indebted to him, and the young girl was left with no other choice than to offer herself up to pay him back. Her being in the woods right about the time I was there was one of Collin’s ways of getting his debt paid, but the Collin that I knew was not going to let any of them go that easily. And these were the people he called his own? People who he

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   64: Until I Learn It

TARA“AIDAN!!!”That was Nadia.I had been so caught up in Aidan’s dashing appearance that I barely noticed the rest of the things surrounding his arrival. As Nadia lunged herself across the room to get into Aidan’s arm, I sat rooted to my seat, just watching the two of them interact.Aidan quickly dropped a bag he was holding on the floor beside him and tightened his grip on the large bouquet he had on the other hand to brace himself for Nadia’s impact. His smile was wide, but nowhere as appealing as the deep rumble of a chuckle that came from his throat.Damn.I found myself squirming in my seat and admiring him more, but why were my lady parts also starting to sing in appreciation? Aidan might be hot, the hottest guy I’d seen in a while—or all my life—, but I wasn’t going to bang him.‘Well, if you aren’t, then why are you thinking about it?’ A voice popped into my head.I had to give myself a lecture about restraining my thoughts, as well as the way my body lit up with Aidan’s pro

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   62: She Did What?

AIDAN“Eight years ago was a long time, man,” Jace said from the other end of the phone as I buried my head in my desk, going through the contracts that needed my review and signatures. “Hell, this was more than eight years. It’s close to nine, if not over..”“So what’s your point?” I asked gruffly.“It’s going to be so difficult, if not impossible to get any information as to what happened with Tara on that day. Don’t forget that to every other person, it was just a normal day. It could be that she just packed up her things and left after you didn’t want her. Did you think about that?” Jace asked.I shook my head. That was possible, but when there was history like this surrounding what happened with Tara, something told me that my father was involved.I knew it.Most of it was my fault, and I could have avoided it if I tried a little harder, but if my father had found out, then he would have wanted to harm Tara, and if she was aware and ran because of that, the trauma from it may be

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   63: Dare I Say

TARAIt was almost the same scenery as the last time Aidan called, which was just yesterday, and again, Nadia was exhausting the heck out of me.But was I complaining? No!Not now, not ever. What did I live for if not to hear those hysterical, contagious, and soul-soothing sounds that were my baby’s laughter? It was a good day, the traffic in the diner had lessened compared to how it was so busy in the morning, so I could give Nadia my undivided attention for the next few minutes.“Okay, Nadia,” I said, imitating a set position of a bull, as though I was about to run into her. Nadia was about ten feet away, and she giggled on taking in my stance, then she imitated one of her own because she knew what was coming next. I was smiling so hard that my teeth were on full display.I continued. “You have twenty minutes until I drop you off with Esme and Aunt Jenna, so that should be enough time for me to show you who’s the boss around here. LITERALLY,” I emphasized, earning another string of

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection    61: My New Wife

AIDANFrom the moment I drove through the borders of Attica pack, I got swarmed with work. I could barely see through the pile of documents that had grown up in my office during my absence, so it was only fitting that I spent the next few days knee-deep in work.I barely ate and had a meager amount of sleep each night, and my routine was working late hours in the office, and returning to my home office to continue from where I stopped.Thankfully, Vermont pack was in good hands as I left things in the care of Jace and Jenna, the lady who didn’t give two shits about me. She was fearless and put the interest of her packmates before others, so I knew that together with Jace, they would be fine until I returned and found a permanent way to run things.Coupled with the fact that I suspected something going on between the two of them—Jace and Jenna—, I was sure they were going to work together just fine.It was a hot Wednesday afternoon, and I was having a meeting with my real estate attorn

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   60: Behind Us

TARAAidan was gone before I knew it, and I couldn’t even say if that was a good thing or a bad thing for me.A part of me fell when I noticed that he wasn’t in the house anymore because we didn’t get to talk much after everything that happened last night, but I guess it was also a good thing as Nadia didn’t see him, and then have a reason to throw tantrums.Nadia had always been a good kid. She had her days when she didn’t agree with me much, or even listen to anyone, as kids normally did, but she never went as far as doing what she did, and still not being accountable for it.I never wanted to make my kid feel scolded, especially when her actions were a result of something as natural as loving her father, but there were things that we could and could not do for the safety and sanity of others. And this was the reason why after breakfast the next day, I sat Nadia down.“Did you enjoy your breakfast, baby?” I was clearing her plates and Nadia was still sitting by the table, barely mov

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   59: It’s Your House

AIDANI was unapologetic about letting the rest of the world burn when it came to Tara and our kid, so one didn’t really need to think too much to guess the kinds of things I would be willing to do when it was them involved. When Tara asked me to help her with Nadia, there was really only one answer, but I couldn’t help the many emotions running through my mind.It was my fault. All of it was my fault.Tara and Nadia had lived in this pack for over eight years, and I’d only been here for weeks, but look how much damage my presence had caused in their lives. They lost their home, Nadia went missing looking for me, and Tara almost lost her life.Goddess.I could feel her limp in my arms, and it felt like I was dying inside.Standing by the entrance door and watching Nadia sleep peacefully on her bed after Tara showed me how to get her ready, I knew that I had to do something differently or risk something much worse happening later. And that started with getting to the root of this godda

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection   58: In Her Bed

TARAWe had to wait for Aidan to make some calls to ensure that we were safe to enter the streets before we could leave the hospital. Since we had Nadia now, taking such a risk was out of the question.I didn’t bother speaking to Nadia about her actions right there in the hospital. I needed her to be safe at home first before I would do that.Motherhood did put a test on your patience sometimes.Aidan came back to meet us in the hallway after he had taken his call. We were sitting on one of the benches, and Nadia was snuggled up against me.“We can leave, but it’s a long walk from here, so Jace is bringing the car, and I’ll drive you both back home.”I nodded. “And the StoneWolves?” My voice was small.“They’ve been taken care of. It turned out that they weren’t so much in number, but you know that one StoneWolf is just as dangerous. I’ll meet up with the right people later to discuss and see how we can make something like this never repeat itself,” Aidan assured. “This isn’t a risk a

TARAAidan and I hurriedly made the trip to the children’s hospital, and even after he assured me multiple times that Nadia wasn’t hurt, I still couldn’t find it in me to let my worries go. My blood was still so charged with adrenaline that I didn’t even feel the pain from the gash on my hand even though it was still bleeding.Immediately we crossed the double glass doors of the hospital, I sprinted down the hallway, looking for the first person I could find who would show me where my daughter was. The place was dead quiet, and it sounded like only a handful of people were in the building, which was understandable because it was already past eleven PM, and no one wanted to run into what was lurking out there.I sighted an elderly nurse, and I ran up to her.“Hi, I’m sorry, but I need to see my daughter, Nadia Moon. The hospital called and said that they had her. Can you please take me to her,” I begged, fighting to keep the tears from sounding in my voice.“Come this way with me, pl

  • Alpha Aidan's Rejection    56: The Children’s Hospital

TARAThis wasn’t supposed to be happening. ‘What?’ You would ask.All of it.None of this was supposed to be happening.Aidan wasn’t supposed to be stepping into my life and doing a three-sixty on everything I knew or thought I knew about him.Aidan was supposed to be the man who sent Kayla to bathe my baby in acid and stick a blade in my stomach, and not the one whose body shook and eyes glazed with tears when he thought that my life was ending. Aidan was supposed to be my nemesis, not my hero. His voice cut through my thoughts. “Tara, keep your eyes open.”He scooted closer to me on the floor and pulled me to his chest. This way, I could feel all the heat from his bare body, and hear the way his heart was pounding erratically in his chest. Aidan rocked me back and forth against himself, sputtering words, and something hit me.Aidan was praying.I slowly snapped out of whatever shock or haze I was in, and I shook my head, finding my voice.“Aidan.” He made an unintelligible sound,
