The carriage bounced and jostled down the dirt road towards us. It was a slick black carriage led by a team of Clydesdale horses. They where elegant creatures with long legs, thick glossy bodies, and well maintained and groom manes. There ears flicked and tails swished about as they pulled the carriage behind them. They where so beautiful that I could not pull my eyes away from them. It was such a shame that they belonged to the Phoenix family. I begrudgingly pulled my horse towards the carriage and held up my hand for the man driver to stop. At first, he was hesitant, but seeing the other guards around me, he slowed his pace and stopped beside me.
“What can I do for you ma’am?” He asked warily as he eyed our men. I put on my best fake smile I could muster. I felt a little insulted because I knew this driver well. Wilfred was the personal driver of Nicklos. When we where younger, he would drive us around at night and take us to all the tourist parts of Celestia. Nicklos often used it as an excuse to get to know the Kingdom better, but really, he just wanted to spend time with me.
“Wilfred, I am wounded. Have I changed so much you cannot recognize me?” His eyes narrowed as he further inspected me and then sputtered in surprise. His eyes went wide as he stood from his bench and bowed. I chuckled at his overwhelming number of apologies. I waved them off and brought my horse to the side of the carriage.
“Ah don’t fret. It has been quite a long time since I have seen you. Unfortunately, I wish I were able to greet you under better circumstances. Bandits have been roaming around these parts and attacking our merchants’ charts. So, under strict precautions, I have been ordered to escort all High Nobles to the Palace. If at any point we are under attack, I ask that you are to keep going until you get to the Palace. Do you understand Wilfred?” I said carefully instructing him on what to do. Wilfred timidly grabbed the reins up and gave a small flick of his wrists. The horses slowly started to walk again, and he nodded his head.
“Of course, your Majesty.” He beamed down at me. I could not help the small smile that formed on my lips. I motioned for my other men to fall in around the carriage. In our tight form, no one would be able to get past unless we had all be slain, and for us that was physically impossible. The General pulled up beside me, his black stallion flicking its head around at the rough jerky movements. I eyed him warily, knowing that he only brought his horse over to talk about Nicklos. I was not in the mood to chat, but that still didn’t stop him from trying.
“I heard about your conversation this morning with his Majesty. Will you have time to try and find a suitor with all your responsibilities my Lady.” I heard the teasing in his tone, and I glared at him. I knew what he was trying to do, and I wasn’t having any of it. He knew about how close Nicklos and I had been back then, but he also knew about how he stopped writing. I wasn’t about to entertain this old soldier with long lost love issues that didn’t have anything to do with him.
“General, you are stepping on thin ice. Do not bring this subject up again. I have an obligation as the Crowned Princess, and to my people. I will do ask my father asks so don’t worry about me. I haven’t let him down before, and I don’t plan to start now. So please, refrain from bringing this up again.” I said bitterly while giving him a side glare. He chuckled in response while dragging his hand through his salt and pepper hair. Despite having gray hairs atop his head, he still looked significantly young. Taught jawline with a well sculpted chin. Dark Gray eyes that gleamed at me with humor in them. He wore the usual colors that represented our Kingdom. White shirt and pants with golden trim. Two golden cuffs sat on each of his shoulder with a rope that held his cloak around his neck. Just like myself, he was decorated with many achievements.
“You should put your differences aside and at least talk to him you know. I am sure there was a reason for his silence for the past year.” I sighed with annoyance and once again, gave my best ‘please shut up’ looks. That earned another chuckle from him. Before I could make a reply, one of the horses started to freak out before falling dead to the ground. The rider was slammed to the ground and had fallen unconscious from the impact.
“Wilfred get them out of her- “I gasped as my horse started prancing around. Finding the dead horse on the ground made it nervous. I tried to rein it in with a gentle tug on, but it was too worked up. Instead, it bucked in the air, knocking me off the saddle and to the ground. I grunted as the air rushed out of me. With little room for error, I rolled out of the way of its falling hooves just as it made contact with the ground. The area had broken out into utter chaos now. Grunting in annoyance, I pulled myself from the ground and staggered over to the General who had dismounted and was ordering the others around.
“Wilfred what are you doing just sitting there, get out of here now!” I shouted pulling my sword from its sheath. The movement caused my chest to shriek in pain. I gasped in pain and held myside trying to comfort myself. I saw the curtain of the Carriage open, but it was too dark to see inside. Wilfred stared dazed as a group of men came pounding into the clearing that we had occupied. They where all gruff looking in there tattered- shirts and pants. They screamed out their war cries as they came in swinging. I brought up my good arm and parried off an oncoming attack. Just as I swiftly blocked the blow, I brought my blade down and stabbed it into the chest of the attacker.
The clearing had stared to fill with the screams of horses and the sound of clashing metal. Grunts and battle cries filled my ears as I defended the carriage, trying to figure out why Wilfred wasn’t moving. The General sat close to me, fighting with a bandit.
“General, I am going to find out what why he isn’t moving. Cover me.” I said grunting as another sword clashed with mine. I kicked the man in the chest before bringing my sword up over my head and bringing it down towards his chest. I impaled him in the heart before tearing off towards the front of the carriage. I weaved between my men and the bandits as I finally made it to Wilfred. He was slumped forward against the carriage, the reins just barely dangling in his hands. I felt my heart drop in my stomach as I climbed the stairs and pushed him against the arm rest. An arrow protruding from his abdomen. His breathing was labored as he stared up at me, pain etched across his face. I grimaced down at him and shoved my shoulder under his arm.
“We have an archer! Keep your eyes peeled!” I hollered at my occupied men. I wasn’t sure if they heard me, but once I get Wilfred situated, I had every intention to find him. “Wilfred, I need your help, do you think you can walk down the steps. I just need you to get into the carriage with the Prince’s.” I hurriedly tried to explain to him, and he just grunted in response. He gently pushed me away and I watched as his legs shook underneath him. I carefully pushed him aside and climbed down the steps before him, so I could catch him if he fell. Thankfully for me, Wilfred was a very scrawny man and weighed almost nothing.
I motioned for him to climb down the steps, sheathing my sword just in case he fell. With shaky knees, he descended the stairs. When he got to the last stair, he tripped and fell, falling face first towards the ground. I braced myself for his impact and caught him roughly with my shoulder. He coughed against my ear and I did everything I could not to flinch from it. It was wet and warm against the side of my head. I didn’t have to look at it to know that it was blood. So, with all the strength I could muster, I held guide him over the carriage door and pulled it open. Just as I opened it, a sword came out and swung towards my head. Taking a step back, I dodged the incoming blade and hissed in annoyance.
“Your Majesties it’s just me. Quick pull him in. I have someone replacing Wilfred that can get you to the Palace safely.” A pair of muscled arms protruded out from the carriage and snagged Wilfred under his arms and lifted him into the carriage.
“Alliah is that you?” The voice was deep and soft. A sweet reminiscent voice of the man I once called mine. I cursed at myself before slamming the door to the carriage. I pulled a nearby guard to the side and forced him to the top of the carriage and demanded that they bring them safely to the Palace. He nervously nodded and quickly flicked the reins, making the horses set off into a rough gallop across the terrain. I just prayed that they made it safely to the Palace without our protection.
Now that they where out of danger, I could focus solely on the men that dared attack us. The numbers had thankfully lessened in my absence. I scanned the throng of the battle until I found the General, who was busy defending one of our fallen soldiers. Quickly I ran to his side and while the bandit was distracted, stabbed him clean through his back and out his chest. He fell with a sickening thud and laid still. I pulled the blade from his back and glared at the trees.
“The driver was injured and not able to drive so we are down a man. He was shot by an archer, so we need to be wary.” The General grunted in annoyance and scanned the canopy of trees as well. It was frustrating when an archer was involved because they where always hard to pinpoint. I shouldn’t have let the General distract me earlier, it wouldn’t have come to this. A loud cry came from the throng and another bandit fell. Then numbers were starting to dwindle, and our men were overwhelming the enemy. It was starting to look up in our favor until another arrow was launched.
I didn’t have enough time to react as it went through my shoulder, blood spurting in every direction as it made impact. I lost my balance on impact and staggered. I groaned from the that flashed through my shoulder and down my arm. The General screamed out commands and pointed towards the direction of where the arrow came from. The two archers that we had left, aimed towards the trees and launched numerous arrows until a body dropped from the cover of trees. Angrily I snapped the end of the arrow so that it wouldn’t get in the way as we fended off the rest of the bandits.
But to my surprise, they started to retreat. Upon the death of their backup, they fled back into the forest. Only three out of the 10 that attacked us lived to see another day. If we didn’t already have so many wounded, I would have been happy to hunt those bastards down. But we had at least two dead, one unconscious, and two injured. The General started barking out more commands again as I clutched at my chest, pain swarming me and my vision slightly blurring at the edges. I failed to keep the carriage safe, and I am sure I would get the blunt end of the stick when I arrived back at the castle. I just hoped that the others had arrived safely.
“Your Majesty you should really get looked at.” The General spoke sternly while walking at my side. I waved his concern off as I strolled down the hallway towards my father’s throne room. I wanted to get the lashings out of the way first before I sought out medical attention. Nothing would hurt worse than my father’s disapproval. “I really am alright. The arrow has blocked the blood from escaping, so I can manage at least an hour before I must get it removed. His Majesty needs to know what transpired in the forest.” I told him blandly. The General sighed in frustration. I could feel he wanted to stop me, but he wouldn’t be able to successfully. Much like my father, we where both extremely stubborn by nature and convincing us to do anything else but wha
After spending some time getting chewed out by the infirmary nurse, I finally found myself back in my room. The sun was well beyond set behind the distant mountains now, signaling the day was finally over. Fatigue had washed over me, but I wasn’t quite ready for bed yet. I found myself settling into the bath that I requested be set up. Steam rose slowly and sluggishly from the clean and crisp water. Lavender scented candles had been lit around the rim of the bathtub, giving off a calming aroma. I sighed with relief as the warm water lapped at my aching body. The heat working at the hard tense muscles that formed over the course of the day. What would my life be like without my bathtub? I would truly be lost. The only issue I had with my bath, was that it gave me time to reflect. Now I had to face my reality with Nicklos. It was true that seeing him today made me realize how much
“Alliah, come with me?” My eyes opened slowly in the darkness of the barracks, a light hand shaking me awake as I slowly came to my senses. Was there something wrong? What was happening? I quickly sat up in bed, grabbing my sword that sat on the floor beside me in the process. Could there possibly be another skirmish on the borders? “What’s going on? Are we in danger? Why isn’t anyone else awake?” I felt the panic rise in my chest as I watched all the dark lumps sleeping in the warn white cots. They where all lined in small, neat rows in a large room. I heard a small chuckle in the dark as a hand slowly traced the top of my shoulder to where my hand rested. I felt my self-tense at the presence, my hand gripping around the leather hilt of my sword. I rubbed my bleary eyes, and in the shadow of the moonlight, I could make out Nicklos’s face. Cursin
Before he confessed his feelings for me, watching the sun rise was something we did together. A secret that only we shared. It was the greatest feeling to be there in that moment with him because I knew that he would have my back. I didn’t ever have to worry about other Knights in those moments we shared. Any time I felt terrible about myself he was always there to pick me back up, dust me off, and put me on my feet. I am where I am today because he was there to help me. My one and only male supporter other than my father. I stared at the mountain, silently waiting for the sun to rise and bring my hope with it. Hope that this battle between us and the bandits would cease. Hope that I could get over my anger for Nicklos and pray that things would patch up between us. I was angry, that muc
“Did we find at lease one Bandit?” I asked shoving my sword into the ground. I pulled my gloves off my hand, rubbing the numb feeling from having gripped so tightly for so long. We had fought for so long that I thought it would never end. So many of our men and theirs laid strewn across the ground like a tornado had ripped through. Blood filled the air, tainting the once beautiful field just outside the wall. It was once a home to a family of farmers, but in its wake was a shattered house, hopes, and dreams. Even if they where to move back in here, they lost their father, and the safe feeling they once felt living there. This would no longer be thought of as a home, but rather a reminder of what they once had. Memories of a happy life they once knew. “Your Majesty we sent out a few of our scouts to trail the fleeing Bandits. They tr
I felt my back collide with a solid wall, pushing all the air out from my lungs. I gritted my teeth as a hand came across my face, a sickening smack sounding off it. Pain burst across my face from the force of the slap I received. Tears welled up in my eyes as I tried to push the pain from my head. Do not show weakness, do not show them you fear them. Stay strong Alliah, you can do this. A wicked laugh came from the Knight in training that had smacked me. It was almost maniacal as it resounded off the walls and falling back to my ears. In this moment I felt truly terrified because I was outnumbered and out muscled. “So, this is the Great Crowned Princess Alliah. Look at the way you cower. I can’t believe they let someone like you train to be a Knight. You are so weak it’s pathetic. Your father must be so disappointed t
It had been an entire day since I heard anything from the scouting team. But in that time frame I was able to get wounded back to the Palace, and the dead where they belong. The field constantly smelt like rotting flesh and stale blood. It was not an appealing smell, but it was getting better every time we burned a batch of bandit bodies. We did them in small piles so we wouldn’t cause a huge grass fire. We didn’t have the water supply around to be able to stop such a huge fire. So small piles where just more convenient. With the last pile burned this morning, the forest was safe from hazards for one more day. Not that there was much of a forest anyway. It was a small meadow that surrounded us. Perfectly plowed fields laid scattered about in preparation for the early spring seeding. But now with the master of the house
We trekked through the forest until we came upon the camp site of these would think bandits. It seemed quiet at this base of theirs. Small groups of mercenaries walked down the dirt path between the houses, chatting quietly while the scanned the perimeter. They seemed nervous and on edge as they glanced between each other, holding their swords down at their sides, almost like they were expecting an attack. With having scanned the surrounding area, they walked onto the porch of an old, battered home and shut the door. Something didn’t feel right. The air seemed tense and on edge. Even my skin prickled as I scanned the small, abandoned village. Dreadfort was a very historical battle sight between my father’s Kingdom, and the Kingdom that laid just North of us. This village use to be
I will skip the boring bits and just tell you what happened next. Things actually went more smoothly than what I had expected. Illia was tossed in the dungeons as soon as I arrived per my request. She did her obviously tidbits of flailing and screaming how unjust I was for arresting her without a reason. Of course, my father tried swooping in and saving the day. But with the evidence in hand about her treason to the kingdom, she was soon after locked away. I couldn't explain to you how good it felt knowing that I was uprooting the problem. That and she was a terrible human being to begin with. Uriah's father had been in tow of my father, and was then given the evidence of all of my father's wrong doings. After scanning through the documents, he went through a trial that lasted well over a year. In that year, Laylia was caught trying to sneak into the border of my kingdom and was arr
The air between all of my soldiers was heavy with silence. Almost like an invisible weight bad been placed on everyone of our shoulders. Grief hung above their heads, having lost one of our own, and learning that their was a traitor amongst us. Even as they sat on their horses, baccks straight and reigns loose in their hands, they still hung their heads. General Bregus was probably the most quiet out of all of us. He uttered not one word since we told him what had gone down the last few days. There was a strangled grunt from his lips, but he uttered no more since then. As he rode by my side, I was able to gauge his reactions. But it was hard to read him as he stared blankly into the distance. His eyes where on the horizon, but his mind had wandered into his own thoughts. It would almost seem like he had even paled a little, grieving in the silence of his own mind. I know that Micha
The breeze brushed through my hair with gentle fingers. It caressed my face and body with its cold embrace, making me shiver. Goose bumps formed on my arms, making my skin tingle against the leather I had dawned on earlier this morning. We were finally free. No longer mingling with criminals, no more stuck behind the many walls of the city, we were free. Instead of the pounding laughter of loud and drunk people, the air was filled with the thunder of horse hooves frantically trying to put distance between us and the city of criminal. The trees where giant blurs of dark and light greens as we raced through the tightly knit forest. Twigs and leaves laid snapped and torn apart under the heavy beats of our horses hooves. In our desperation to get back home, we neglected to actually hide our trail. All our hope was on them being so distracted they wouldn't know where to start l
Just as expected, the streets where lined with criminals. Their pace was slow as they crawled through the streets like timid cockroaches. I watched as the sea of people flucuated, a gentle tide coming in and evading back into the ocean. The murmurs that rose above the steady beat of feet across the stone pathway, was like a mother hushing her child back to sleep. But it came with a dark whisper of warning as they passed by. The gentle whisper of death caressed their lips as the words escaped their lips. Like a gentle chant, all I could hear was 'Laylia wants their heads.' Who else would she be talking about other than us. We single handedly walked through her walls, the comfort of her own walls, her territory. Her privacy was disrupted, and the quiet comfort of the suprise she had been building for so long was now in disarray. No longer was she able to have the upper hand in her plot to over throw my h
Whilst rubbing sleep from my eyes, I wobbled down the stairs like an infant toddler. I hadn't completely woken up yet and I don't think I was fully recovered from yesterday's endeavor. Honestly, from looking at the rest of the crew, I don't think they would agree either. On the couches laid an exhausted looking Micheal. His head was lulled to one side, mouth slightly popped open with a small sliver of drool coming out. It oozed out in a small stream of clear liquid spittle. He had somehow managed to fall asleep with his arms crossed over his chest. One of the very few men that I have met that doesn't snore like a loud fog horn. Seria had two big black and saggy bags under her eyes as she laid passed out on Micheal's lap. Her arms where crossed over each other upon his lap, making a makeshift pillow out of her own muscle and flesh. Her body was a straight as a board until you came u
When the room had finally grown silent, I decided to dare a glance over my shoulder. I could see a clear line of sight straight to Maxwell's cell. The guards instructed to watch over him, where not in my line of sight. Knowing that they wouldn't be able to see us, I moved away from Seria. She sat frozen in place, hands clenched into tight fists as she stared into space. I waved a hand in her face, trying to coax her out of her deep thoughts. But she continued to stand as still as a statue. "Seria, I'm sorry I put you in an uncomfortable spot, but your dress would have given us away. I have no intentions of harming you if that was what you where worried about." She didn't say anything as she continued to stare off into space. My frustrations where starting to grow as I tried to stir her from her thoughts, but nothing I did was working.
"I am not going to help you, so you might as well kill me already you stupid woman." Maxwell groaned angrily. You could sense the defeat in his tone as he spoke, like a man who was ready to just give up. I gingerly approached the gate door, kneeling down to his level and hoping he would recognize me. I wrapped my fingers around the cold wrought iron and giggled it slightly, testing the weakness of the gate. Unfortunately it didn't budge. "Maxwell, it's Michael. The Princess sent out a small team to rescue you. It hasn't been an easy journey, but we are here now so don't worry." I said jiggling the door once more. There was a dark and weak chuckle that radiated from Maxwell. "Don't bother Michael, I am far to weak to be escorted out safely. You would be killed because of me. Laylia that bitch has been to
How can a woman dressed in bright green clothes disappear so quickly? There was no way she could just up and vanish without a single warning. With her attire, any man would love to shove their greedy and grim covered hands all over her. Especially in this establishment. I don't know what infuriated me more, her vanishing and not telling me what she had planned, or that someone would even dare pray on her. I had to find her fast before someone else decided to grab a hold of her. How did I casually hunt for someone while my heart was racing and my panic was starting to spike. I had no doubt she could handle herself if things went sideways, but I would still rather be at her side if things did turn sour. I knew I made her mad when I vented my frustrations on her, but not enough to abandon me in a crowd full of horney men and lustful women. Soon I would be seen without
Six months I have been training for field work. I was barely even close to graduating, and now here I am. Sitting in the enemy territory with little experience on sneaking around. I wasn't the best for remaining unseen. Anytime I snuck out of the Kingdom, father would always catch me. I was even caught on the last excursion to find the bandits. It was the first time I had ever met her Majesty. I thought she would give me a verbal whipping for sneaking out on to missions before my graduation, but to my surprise she remained docile. When I offered to go along in my father's stead, I didn't think that this journey would be this perilous. I mostly just wanted to get back at Emmanuel for hurting my father. But it turned into more than that. My best friend is dead, my other friend is a traitorous, and my future Queen has her family's secret history to shoulder. Princess Alliah has become quite tired w
