There are certain things Kylie Watson hates. The first one on the list is disruption. The disruption caused by the change was the worst form of it. That is why she has this massive headache right now.
Her company was doomed for change. Change of ownership is what it is called. She worries about many things. First, will they all still keep their jobs? She heard from the secretary that the company was bought and will be merged with another. So many people were going to lose their jobs, she was sure of that.Secondly, if she was to lose it, how will she foot her bills and still take care of her ailing mother? Her younger sister needs to pay her tuition fees, how was she going to pay it? Her savings would be able to sustain her for a year but after that what next? The ding of her phone distracted her. She peered at the screen to see that her best friend, Janelle, left a message."It's going to be okay. Don't overthink it." The message read. She was trying to but it wasn't easy. She wonders how Janelle does it. Janelle was a single mother. Her daughter, Kimberly was a beautiful toddler and was a product of a one-night stand. Janelle refused to abort her even after Kim's father made it clear that he was not interested in having a baby and would not be raising Kim. Janelle was supposed to be more anxious than Kylie. She wasn't supposed to be comforting Kylie, it was supposed to be the other way round. Kylie sighed. Really sighed. She was already exhausted and it was only 7 am. She knew she was going to pass out from this headache at work. She slipped her shoes on, grabbed her bag, and left the house. At least she was going to make good use of today. The first thing she noticed when she arrived at work was that everywhere was quiet. Deadly quiet. She ran to her office, well if you could call walking briskly in four-inch heels and tripping three times running. She shared her office with Janelle and three other workers. But right now, only Janelle was in the office and she too was about to leave. "Where is everybody?" Kylie asked, dropping her bag on her chair."We have an emergency meeting with Mr Simpson."Mr Simpson was their boss and it was only on rare occasions that they had meetings with him."Why?" "I don't know. But I think it is about the company being sold off. Let's go. We don't want to be the last one to arrive." Janelle replied. The duo walked as fast as they could but were among the last ones to get into the room. And damn, the room was full. They had to squeeze themselves to be able to sit down.A minute turned into two, two turned into thirty and Mr Simpson hadn't arrived. Then suddenly, the doors opened and Mr. Simpson walked in with that authoritative aura he seems to possess. But his smile was far from authoritative. It was warm and soft. He made them feel like they were all part of a big family trying to achieve a goal— to build up the company.Right now, she wondered if they were a big family. Family doesn't sell off their family, right? Who was she kidding, she knew that was just his plot to make them work harder. "I'm so sorry for my lateness". That was it. His use of casual sentences. She was expecting him to use something along the lines of "Please accept my apologies for the inconveniences caused by my delay." That is being professional. Mr. Simpson shrugged off his coat and handed it to a young man standing behind him. After that, he took his seat and looked at the crowd —his employees. He brought out his glasses and put them on and continued looking at the employees. Kylie wasn't sure what he was looking for but when he started speaking, she assumed he found it."Good morning everyone." Mr. Simpson greeted. They all mumbled a word of greeting in return."I want to have this meeting this morning as it is urgent. I know a lot of you had urgent matters to attend to but this is more urgent so I will get to the point." He better do that. Kylie wasn't sure she would be able to control her actions if he mentioned urgent one more time."The company has been sold. The new boss will be present here tomorrow. The agreement was to merge the company with his other company so that means a lot of employees will be laid off. You can either decide to work your ass off today to impress him or face reality and start packing. Whatever you decide, please accept my sincere apologies if you are eventually laid off." Kylie found a lot of things wrong with that speech but what hit her the most was the fact that he was apologizing for something that could be avoided. Why, in the world, was he selling off the company? She didn't know but she knew better than to blame him. Everyone has their baggage they carry and she did not know what was his. She couldn't just judge him. But others did. Their harsh mumbles and glares were enough to send the message. They did not bother to hide it, perhaps thinking that he was no longer their boss and couldn't fire them."I will take my leave now. Once again, accept my apologies." Mr. Simpson stood up and left the room."Of course, take your leave after dumping such a message of doom on us. You just made some people's lives more miserable." Mary, one employee, complained loudly. She was known as the most dramatic employee. Kylie looked over to see her fanning herself with one hand and the other was on her forehead giving her the image of a Disney princess in distress. Mary was so dramatic.Kylie is expecting to see more reactions from other employees before the end of today.By the time 4 pm lurked around, a lot of reactions were shown. Kylie took her time to classify them into groups. The first group was the ones who were complaining. They questioned everything like why the company should be sold, why the company can't be handed to Mr Simpson's son who, by the way, is a doctor and the company should be merged. The second group was those who were nonchalant. Kylie could see them everywhere. They popped the loudest gum bubbles, some were even filing their nails. Others were on their phone chatting. She believed she fell into the third group. The group that felt like it was the end of the world. She felt like hyperventilating. She rubbed her forehead and hoped the painkillers she took would work faster.Peter, on the other side of the office, was staring into thin air probably wondering how he was going to take care of his two-year-old son that was abandoned by his girlfriend. Kylie heard from Millie, the office gossip, that the daycare Peter had his son i
Mason Brookes has always been a coordinated person all his life. He could sense disorderliness from miles away. Simpsons Interiors was a very disorganized company. As he flipped through the pages of the files brought to him by the company, he was disappointed. The company needed a lot of adjustments when he buys it. If he buys it. Mr. Simpson and his team would need to do a lot of persuasion to get him to buy it.The knock on his door distracted him. But the person entered without him giving a reply so he knew it was Richie without looking up."Yo bro, how ya doin'?" Richie sat down. "You always work. Can't you have fun, no?" Richard Dawkins has this heavy accent that made anyone know that he was from Chicago. He was all about fun and women that sometimes Mason wondered how he still owned a company. Mason and Richie went to the same business school and since then they were inseparable. If Mason did not understand that law about opposite attracts; he understood it well when he became
The first thing Kylie noticed when she woke up was that she wasn't in her bedroom. She sat up and stared around. The room was empty if you didn't count her clothes littered all over the place. Her clothes! She looked underneath the covers and saw that she was naked. Stark naked. She was confused. She never slept naked even in blistering heat. She took the blanket with her as she stood up. Something on the drawers caught her eye. She walked over to see that it was a sheet of paper. She picked it up and some dollar bills fell out. She was even more confused now.'Thank you for the night. I had fun. Take the money as payment for your services and don't try contacting me.' The note read. Now, fragments of yesterday's events were coming back. She remembered talking to a hot man with the worst pickup lines ever. She remembered him asking her for a dance. She remembered kissing him and needing more than just kisses but she did not remember how she got to the hotel. She couldn't even rememb
After the meeting ended, they all got up and left the hall to their various offices. Mason remained in his seat till everyone had left. He stared at Kylie until she was out of sight. He couldn't believe his eyes when he saw her.He could hear some employees mumbling about his looks as they exited but he was more focused on the pronounced frown on Kylie's face.A woman around her age came up to her and they hugged each other. He could tell they were friends from the way they linked arms and walked out. He found that funny. He thought girls stopped doing that after high school. He scoffed. He looked down at his desk and packed his file, put them in his bag, and walked out. He needed a secretary asap to do this for him. He walked to the elevator and waited a few seconds before the door opened. His mind kept on wandering back to Kylie. The way she was shocked when she saw him. She must not have known he was the new boss.He walked into his new office. The place felt very odd. Mr. Simp
Kylie felt guilty as she left Mason's office. She didn't plan on blackmailing him with pregnancy but the way he kept talking about firing her made her a little nervous. She was certain she wasn't pregnant. If anything, the used condoms she saw on the bedside drawer were enough proof of that. Even she didn't want a baby yet. Not when she has other things to take care of. Her phone buzzed in her hand and she peered at it to see her sister's name on the screen. She swiped the screen to answer the call."Hi, Kylie. How are you? How is work?" Her sister's voice sounded from the other side of the phone. "Hi, Kendall. I'm fine. How are you doing? How's mum?" Kylie asked. She suspected that that was the reason Kendall was calling."I'm fine but I can't say the same about Mum. The doctor called me earlier and added a list of drugs to her list." The doctor called her. Why? Kylie was the one who foots the bill so what was the point of calling and disturbing her sister?"Why? What happened to
"The list is out." was the first thing Janelle said to Kylie when she stepped into the office."List?" Kylie raised a brow."Yes. The list for the layoff." "Have you checked it out?" Kylie asked, sitting down."Yes, I have. We still have our jobs." Janelle grinned."We do?" "Yes, Ky. We do."Kylie's disbelief was evident. She didn't expect Mason to not lay her off. She thought he might not buy her pregnancy stories and still fire her but he didn't. And apparently, he also didn't fire her best friend. She was so elated.Kylie beamed at Janelle. But then, she noticed apprehension in Janelle's eyes. "What's wrong? Aren't we supposed to be happy?" Kylie asked."We are. It's just that some things were changed. Some employees have a different job now.""So….?" She urged Janelle on."I think you need to see the list for yourself. It's on the notice board down the hallway."Kylie stood up suspiciously and went out of the office. She decided to check Janelle's name first. And Janelle wasn't
