The next morning, Tobias wrote back to Alpha Rivers, enquiring further into his offer. It was only a day before we received his response, ordering us to meet him at the waterfall, where the river flowed that separated our territory from his.
"Why does he want to meet us?" Rose asked as she stood at the stove, pouring the hot water from the kettle into the teapot, which held a dismal number of leaves for three people, "Can he not send us the grain and be done with it?"
"Apparently not..." Tobias replied from the kitchen table, "He wants to meet us, me specifically, to decide if he will help us."
I rolled my eyes, "What a power freak," I muttered. "He wants to look down on us, desperate and hungry, knowing that the power to control our fate is in his hands. What a bloody-"
"Esme," Tobias interrupted, snapping his gaze up to me, "I know. And it boils my blood too. But to get his grain, we need to do exactly what he wants. So if he wants us to beg, we will beg."
I scoffed, "I'm not coming."
"You are," Tobias replied, "You, Rose and I run this pack. We all need to be there."
I folded my arms over my chest, "He only asked for you. You'll manage without me."
"And that's not how this pack works," Rose said, "We come as a three. We're in this together remember?"
I pouted and said nothing.
"Esme," Tobias said sternly, "I need you. I need your judgement and opinion and if nothing else your skill with that bow. We're going to meet Alpha bloody Rivers with the pack weaker than its ever been. Anything could happen."
I threw my head back and groaned.
"Fine," I grumbled, "But don't expect to see me kneeling for anyone."
"No one will be kneeling," Rose said sharply, "I can tell you that for sure."
Rose didn't stand for anyone messing us around. She was firm, level headed and self-assured - exactly how I craved to be. Since she met Tobias, she'd been like a big sister to me and she'd taught me not to let anyone walk over you no matter who they were and how much much power they had.
"When does he want to see us?" I asked.
"At dusk tonight," he replied.
I sat back up straight, "Dusk? Why dusk?"
I noticed Rose and Tobias exchange nervous glances.
"You can't deny it this time. Something isn't right," I said putting my hand firmly on the table in front of where Tobias sat, "Alpha Rivers has something sinister planned."
"As I said, your archery skills may come in handy. We will go ready to fight," Tobias said, "Because there's no backing out now. He's coming."
An hour before dusk we set out to the waterfall which sat at the edge of the territory. By the time we were coming to the end of the journey and nearing the waterfall, the light was fading fast. The sounds of gushing water were getting louder and the scent of the Pheonix pack grew stronger as we approached the border. I couldn't help but feel on edge and by the way Tobias walked with his shoulders tensed and how Rose followed at the back continually looking around, ready to attack if anything came for us, I could tell they were too.
We soon made it to the base of the waterfall, where the water pooled and bubbled, recovering from the ten-metre verticle drop before flowing smoothly downstream to where the river winded through the forest once more.
It was late September and the days still held the last lingering signs of summer but the evening air brought a harsh wintery chill. I shivered, pulled my jacket tighter around me and looked around.
No sign of him.
We must have stood waiting in silence for at least ten minutes before we heard a deep voice echo from somewhere above us.
"Alpha Brynn," it said.
It took me by surprise and my gaze snapped up to the top of the waterfall. The dark silhouette of a man stood looking down at us - tall, broad and perfectly still.
What was left of the golden rays of sunset shone behind him, casting a shadow on his face but he was the Alpha for sure. I could tell from the way he held himself; the sharp, confident tone of his voice; and the way he paused, entitled to take his time to speak.
"How lovely it is to meet again," he added eventually.
Tobias said nothing but I noticed that as the man began to jump down the rocks towards us, his jaw tightened and he swallowed. Rose stood beside him, her feet shoulder-width apart, looking strong and confident, as she always did, with her fierce red hair falling unapologetically around her face. I shuffled my feet out, standing up as straight as them before turning my gaze back to the man making his way down from the rocks.
As he got closer, his face came into view. He wore a ridiculing smirk and an excited glint in his eye that only grew brighter the longer he stared at Tobias, who stood as still as stone as if he was desperately resisting the urge to launch. My brother's lack of ease seemed to entertain Alpha Rivers like he came looking to provoke.
"You came alone?" Tobias asked in a strained voice.
"Of course," Alpha Rivers said, "Why would I need my men? But I see you brought...company," he added looking from Rose to me.
His eyes lingered on me and I only clutched my bow tighter, refusing to break my eye contact with him.
"Beautiful women," he commented, still staring deep into my eyes, "Which is your Luna?"
Tobias put his hand on Rose's shoulder, "This is Rose, my Luna," he then gestured to me, "And Esme, my sister. The two I trust to run this pack with me."
He cocked his head to the side and only broke the intense eye contact to look me up and down as his smirk exaggerated, "...how very modern of you, Alpha Brynn," he said finally taking his eyes off me and back to Tobias.
"But I'm not here to discuss women with you-" he said.
I scoffed. What a pig.
His sharp eyes instantly darted back to me
"Is there a problem, Miss Brynn?" he asked, "Any reason you are interrupting me?"
I just stared at him, folding my arms in front of me. He locked his eyes on mine, waiting patiently for my response.
"My apologies, Alpha Rivers," Tobias intervened, "Do go on-"
"I'd like to hear it from her," he said taking a step closer to me.
I said nothing but once again, held the eye contact. His cold eyes pierced and stabbed but I wasn't going to look away. I wasn't going to give in.
"Esme," Tobias hissed. "Apologise."
"Listen to your brother, Esme," Alpha Rivers jeered, "Do as he says."
He was now less than a metre from me. I could see every aspect of his face. The dark shadows his cheekbones cast, the strong symmetrical jaw and his thick dark hair. His eyes too were in high definition: icy and cold as he continued to glare.
I could only just dampen my pride enough to say it.
"Sorry," I said, forcing both syllables from my lips in the bluntest manner possible.
He nodded approvingly before stepping away and turning to face the waterfall.
"So, now that's sorted...let's talk business, Alpha Brynn," he said.
As Alpha Rivers back was turned, Tobias looked at me and widened his eyes at me. I just shrugged defensively before turning my watchful gaze back to Alpha Rivers.
"So you want my grain," Alpha Rivers continued, "And I want...what do I want?"
"That's the question we were hoping you could answer," Rose said, "Your letter came as a surprise. One day you are our enemy, the next you want to help us in our time of need?"
Alpha Rivers let out a short laugh.
"This waterfall is beautiful, isn't it?" he said, "On my side, the bank is high and the shore thin. There's hardly space to fully appreciate it. But from here...from your side...I see it in a whole new light."
He then slowly turned back around, taking his time as we waited in anticipation.
"Anyway..." he said clapping his hands, "I'll be back on your territory tomorrow afternoon with your first ten bags of grain."
"You never said what you want in return," Rose said.
Alpha Rivers smiled, "You'll see," was all he said before he turned and jumped back up onto the first rock, leading up to the top of the waterfall. His eye caught mine, "I have a few requirements. But they can wait," he said before his lips curled into a smile and he raised his arms in glory, "First, we must feed your starving people."
He then elegantly leapt up the subsequent rocks until he quickly reached the top of the waterfall where he turned and lowered into a deep bow.
"Until we meet again," he said with a grin before he stood upright again and disappeared back into the forest.
We stood in silence for a few moments, none of us sure what to think.
"Well...we aren't dead," Rose said at last in an optimistic tone.
"Despite Esme trying to pick a fight with him. What the hell was that about, huh?" Tobias added.
I ignored his question.
"And we are getting enough grain to sustain us for another week at least and it sounds like more is on the way," Rose said.
"But we still have no idea what he wants," Tobias said, "Why wouldn't he tell us?"
I bit my lip nervously, still looking up to the top of the waterfall where we had stood.
"I don't trust him," I stated, "There's something twisted about him."
I then looked down into the forest across the river. It had now fully descended into the darkness of night and as the moon rose in the sky, the shadows elongated into weird contortions of the trees that cast them.
Rose put her arm around my shoulders and turned me, prising my eyes away from the gloom, "Let's get home. Before he reappears in a clown suit or something."
I shuddered, "Good idea."
The next afternoon, Rose and I were in the kitchen, peeling the last three small, shrivelled potatoes left of this week's ration whilst Tobias sat repeatedly throwing a stone up into the air and catching it again in the same hand.I had just finished peeling the final potato when I caught him doing it once again in the corner of my eye and clenched my teeth. After abruptly stabbing the peeling knife into the table, I snapped my head to him."Tobias," I hissed, "You are going to drive me insane."He looked at me and sighed before lifting his feed off the table and leaning forward, "I'm sorry. Alpha Rivers could be here, on our territory, any moment and I'm anxious.""Well, you're making us all anxious. Go and throw your stone somewhere else," I replied, "We're trying to make soup out of lite
Later that evening, I sat stretched out on the sofa with my legs up on the armrest staring at the ceiling. Tobias was on the opposite side of the room in his armchair reading a book whilst Rose sat with a head rested on his shoulder as she tried to pick the dried flour from under her nails. We'd spent all afternoon and evening delivering rations of grain to villages and families only to come home and make the first fresh bread we'd had in weeks which, whilst in actual fact was probably just fairly ordinary bread, tasted like heaven. The smell still lingered in the air in all its yeasty glory which made a welcome change from the stale smell of wilting cabbages and bread baked months ago that we had become accustomed to.But as I enjoyed the feeling of a full stomach at last, my mind couldn’t help but dwell on the new doom we could now face.
The following morning was a beautiful one. We were still in the early moments of dawn, the first rays of golden morning sun only just creeping up over the horizon. They filtered through the branches of the trees outside my window, filling my room with glorious light that flickered and danced with every little breeze.I lay my sheets flat on my bed and splashed my face with some cold water before picking up my bow and arrow. It's been weeks since I last went for a hunt. But now that we had grain, there was less need to preserve the wild animals so it was time to treat myself - especially considering how sour this morning was inevitably going to turn later on when Alpha Rivers returns and drags us deeper into his shady deal.I had to make the most of it now."Morning, Esme," a voice said as I reached the bottom of the stairs.I froze. It wasn't as familiar as Rose and Tobias's voices but it wasn't entirely unfamiliar either.Deep and col
Six weeks after the arrival of the first grain and the Nightingale pack had been restored to what it once was. With food in their bellies and a steady supply more, the people were happy again and although we had the knowledge of Alpha Rivers' mysterious enemy looming over us, there was no sign of them yet and we let ourselves relax in the moment of peace.Every week Alpha Rivers came with more grain. I usually did my best to avoid him by staying in my room and watching him out the window or tactically going to hunt at times I thought he was most likely to appear. But he gave no indication of when he was going to come and followed no identifiable pattern so there were still occasions where I got caught out and I fell victim of his invasive stares and snide comments. On one afternoon when Rose and Tobias had gone for a run, I heard the distinct sound of his cart rolling towards the house. After putting my book down and getting up from my bed, I sidled up to my win
After my hunt, I emerged from the woods and headed for the house, I noticed the Pheonix cart was still outside. My stomach sunk. I was hoping he'd left.Whilst Alpha Rivers himself was nowhere in sight, the man he had brought with him stood leant against the cart, his arms folded, patiently waiting."Where's Alpha Rivers?" I asked him."Talking with Alpha Brynn," he replied. "Something about adding vegetables to the grain deliveries."I nodded and began heading to the house, no intention of going anywhere near our office where I knew they would be."You want my advice, sweetheart?" he called after me.I didn't bother turning around."Not really."Who even is this man?"Stay away from, Alpha Rivers," he said firmly, "I know he's doing business with your pack but do not get personally involved."I scoffed and turned around to look at him, "I wasn't planning on.""Just be careful.""Why?" I asked
"Your form is wrong," a voice said.I was in the forest, as I was nearly every afternoon, training. I was halfway through my fifty push-ups and as soon as I recognised the voice I just rolled my eyes."It's not," I replied bluntly.Alpha Rivers seemed to spend more time on our territory these days than he spent on his own. He was constantly delivering grain and vegetables - one day he came with a single sack of turnips and spent three hours in our kitchen talking to Tobias and getting in my way as I was trying to cook.He also had this irritating habit of following me into the woods. I was a woman who valued my time alone and I used to find the forest a peaceful escape. But now it was just another place I had to keep an eye out for him and put up with his condescending, sexist, annoying comments."You're making it harder for yourself without any benefit," he sung, an amused smile on his lips."I'm not," I repeated."Straighten your ba
We kept walking along the lake in quiet until we reached a break in the reeds and vegetation where there was a small beach. He stopped and stepped onto the sand, taking another deep breath of the fresh air.By now the sun had nearly dropped below the horizon, giving the air a wintery chill."Tomorrow at noon, when the sun is at its warmest, come swimming with me here," he said, turning to me.He didn't phrase it as an offer but I folded my arms and raised an eyebrow."Why?" I asked."Why not?" he said in a bored tone, "Live a little, Esme."I sighed and stepped down off the path to join him on the sand. Standing so close next to him, his scent drifted into my nose, undiluted by the other smells of wood and animals around us. I took a deep breath, my muscles easing as I followed his gaze out to the beauty of the lake."I warn you, it's freezing at this time of year," I replied. His lips curled into
I sat on my bed for hours, staring despairingly at the wooden floorboards. Rose and Tobias were downstairs busy making dinner meaning I was free to wallow alone, just as I wanted to, and process what the hell had just happened in that forest. After overcoming the initial shock, my predominant emotion was anger. How could the Goddesses give me Alpha Rivers as a mate? For years, I'd watched Rose and Tobias love each other, dreaming of one day meeting someone who would make me as happy as they were. But with a man like Alpha Rivers as a mate, it could never be like that. I could never experience that kind of happiness and that disappointment was crushing me.But I felt ashamed for it.I shouldn't need a mate to be happy.I am a leader of this pack. I have duties and a purpose. I am fulfilled.I don't need a mate and I certainly don't need Alpha Rivers. I was disgusted to have enjoyed the kiss with such a vil
The next few years weren't easy. I was Alpha of not one but two united packs and I didn't have my Brother and Rose, who the pain of losing still crippled me, beside me to help. But perhaps even more shockingly, a few weeks after Theodore Rivers' death, I discovered I was pregnant. At first, it nearly destroyed me to be carrying his child after everything he did.But eight months later, when I gave birth to my son, I couldn't have felt more the opposite. When he first opened his eyes, I couldn't help recognise their hazel-brown colour and when chocolate brown curls began to sprout from his head, they felt all too familiar but he was my little bundle of joy and when I looked at his sweet little face I didn't feel any of the pain of the past. Only happiness and motivation to carry on even when things got tough. He filled the hole that Theodore had left and without him, things could have been very different.Lou was there for me and my son, who we named
Half an hour later I was in the hallway of the Pheonix packhouse tying my boots as I sat on the bottom step of the stair. Theodore had just shrugged on his jacket and was now reaching for the coat stand. He plucked the jacket off the top and thrust it in my direction. It was mine. The one I left on Tobias's body.I took it and stared down at it."What did you do with their bodies?" I asked, clutching the brown leather between my fingers."Burnt them," he replied. "The ashes are in the pocket of your jacket."I reached into the pocket to find a glass vial filled with what looked like just the grey soot of a fire. I wrapped my fist tight around it and held it close to my chest."Can I sprinkle them on Nightingale territory?" I asked. He paused for a second before nodding, "Lou will escort you to wherever you want before I claim the pack."I reached for my bow but Theodore's hand got to it before me."You don't need
The rain of earlier had returned as a raging storm by the time Lou got me to the doorstep of a large house. We were wet through but he soon sat me down and lit a warm fire before finding some dry clothes and making me a soothing mug of hot cocoa."How are you feeling?" he asked, sitting down on the end of the bed he had made up for me."I've been better," I said hoarsely. He sighed and squeezed my hand."I've had word from some of the men," he said, "Alpha Rivers won't be here until the morning.""And what horrors will the morning bring?" I asked."He's taking you to the Nightingale territory where he will announce Alpha Brynn's death and declare himself your people's new Alpha. The Nightingale citizens are being escorted home tonight and ordered to gather at the waterfall at 10 am tomorrow."I hugged my knees tighter to my chest, "Just in case he hasn't taken enough from me. Now he's taking my pack.""I'm sorry, Esme," he said
We were soon back at the camp where Rose and Tobias still sat. Theodore still gripped my arm tightly and as he looked down at Tobias with cold eyes, he instantly knew something was up."It's been settled. Esme will be living with me," Theodore told him, "As my Luna."Tobias looked from Theodore to me and my tear-stained cheeks and the way I depended on Theodore's arm for support, my legs still weak and shaking, maybe from the shock, maybe the pain, maybe the betrayal.Tobias got straight to his feet."What has happened?" he questioned, "Esme?"Saying nothing, I just kept my eyes on the floor, completely unable to face either of them.I was ashamed of my weakness. Ashamed that I had let him do this to me."What the fuck have you done to her?" Tobias growled a few seconds later."None of your business, Alpha Brynn. All you need to know is that she has changed her mind," Theodore replied, "And you will need to manage w
After hours of walking around Pheonix land, hunting down Alpha Kane's men and loading up the bodies of our soldiers and friends onto carts to return home wrapped in a sheet, we were all drained and exhausted. We still had miles of territory to scour but we hadn't had a moments rest in far too long so we decided to make camp for the night."So it's over," I said finally breaking the silence around the campfire, "We can go back to normal.""Finally," Tobias said with a sigh."But now what?" I asked, looking up to my brother."We reclaim our territory and rebuild our pack. There may not be many of us left but it's something," Tobias said.I nodded, "Although it will be a quarter of its original size, it's still our duty to be there for the Nightingale pack.""It's not your duty, Esme," Theodore said, speaking up for the first time since we made camp. He'd been sitting on the opposite side of the fire, his fingers firmly entwined a
Sometime later, Theodore came over to me. I was sat with Rose and Tobias and had just finished stitching up a nasty wound on the shoulder of one of our soldiers."Alpha Brynn, everything here is sorted. I'm sending my men out to search the rest of the territory for escapees and to recover the bodies of our lost soldiers. I'd appreciate if you did the same. The sooner the place is cleared, the sooner we can let the citizens out," he said.Tobias nodded. As he spoke I'd been trying to avoid looking behind him at the spiralling flames of the 'crematorium' his men had made to burn the bodies of hundreds of Alpha Kane's men. But the smoke billowed and itched our lungs, refusing to be ignored."We've lost a lot of soldiers so we will be searching the territory for their bodies," Rose said."Fine," Theodore replied, "Esme, you are coming with me though."I looked up at him."I was actually hoping to go with Tobias and Rose. The least I can d
I looked into Theodore's eyes. They were wide and frozen as he kept looking down at his hands."Klaus," I said to the soldier who now cowered in the corner, "Tell all your fellow soldiers that their leader is dead and that if they surrender immediately, we can end this with no more bloodshed."Klaus nodded and scrambled out of the room, not taking his eyes off Theodore for a second."Are you okay?" I asked, stepping closer to my mate.He suddenly snapped out of his trance and his eyes locked on me."Why the fuck are you here?" he growled, striding forward and grabbing my wrist."I'm sorry I-" I stuttered as he dragged me at high speed from the room, "I had to help.""And how to fuck is getting yourself captured and put in extreme danger helping, Esme?" he hissed."If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have had the opportunity to challenge Alpha Kane and he would have killed you on your knees," I replied. With that, he
I was taken through a large pair of wooden doors into a large room. I stumbled forward as the men holding me shoved me forwards to where a middle-aged man sat comfortably on an ornate chair."Well, well, well. What do we have here?" he asked, looking me up and down. His voice was deep and patronising. His features were sharp and oddly familiar. I even knew those brown eyes. It felt like I'd experienced their piercing stare many times before.Klaus stepped forward and brushed my hair off my neck. The man's eyes lit up and he instantly got to his feet. He smiled warmly yet his eyes remained dark and beady as he strode over to me and held out his hand."Alpha Kane, a pleasure to meet you, Luna Rivers," he said.I looked down at his hand and scoffed."You expect me to shake your hand? After everything?" I asked. He continued to look down at me."Yes," he said sharply, "Has Theodore not taught you how to show respect yet?"
I next woke on a dark stone floor. The bustle and hustle of the camp had gone and now all I could hear was the echoing drips of water droplets and the pacing footsteps of one man.My every muscle felt tired and useless and I could hardly even sit myself up."How are you feeling?" someone asked.Upon glancing up, I saw Lou looking down at me."Exhausted," I replied.I glanced around. It was dark but I could just about see damp stone walls."Well, that's expected," he replied, "You'll be okay soon."I diverted my glance back to Lou."Expected? Why?" I questioned.Lou furrowed his eyebrow, "Because Alpha Rivers marked you.""...So? And where the fuck are we?"It was then that Lou's face dropped and his jaw tightened, "You don't know, do you? He didn't warn you?""Warn me of what?" I asked.Lou sighed and sat down beside me, "When a female wolf is marked she goes into a deep sleep. It's the natura
