'Hey.' China but a hand soothingly on her back. 'It's gonna be alright.'
The doctor observed them for a few seconds in silence. 'And I heard of your parent's case. Do not despair, Eni iyi, they will be back soon.'
Eniiyi mentally palmed her face. Why had she even bothered to correct him?
'Thank you, sir.'
'I wasn't aware that they now have Biology in Primary School curriculum now,' the man said in thought. 'How the world is changing.'
'So where was I? Oh, yes. The third feature is Achalasia; a disorder that affects the ability to move food through the weasand; the oesophagus. What makes your own case rare is that most people with TAS, most times, have all the three, some two, but never one. And it is only one you've exhibited so far.
I'm still going to carry out some tests on you, but it's quite obvious that you're not suffering from Addison's or Achalasia. O
04:29pm, September 29The day went as normal for Eniiyi. Since she'd been discharged from the hospital all she did was enjoy herself, Mrs Okenwa seemed to have made that her second priority, Baby Kanayo being the first. If she removed the fact that her parents were still uncontacted, every other thing was fun. They got to go to numerous parks and gardens and just yesterday, after her appointment with the doctor, they'd gone on another shopping spree in which the children had shopped till they got tired. Baby Kanayo was also all theirs to play with, and did she love babies! Plus they also got to meet many new people and make a few friends.Mrs China had gotten them enrolled in a school with the help of the law and school was resuming next week and Eniiyi was super excited to start secondary school for the first time. Not long ago they had just come back from Mrs China's farm. Okenwa Farm it was
'However they helped us to put a call through to them but it didn't go through, which was expected, considering they're not even in Nigeria. Then they sent them an email but we were informed few days ago that it has remained unread and they haven't gotten any reply back.''What about Uncle Felix? You have to find him, he has my parent's new numbers!''We have not been able to find him either. Lagos is a very big place and there are many people called—' he brought out a sheet of paper from his file and read '—Femi Makanjuola.'Eniiyi sighed.'And you do not know what he does?' China spoke up.'He builds houses, he's a civil engineer,' Lastborn said.'No, he's not. He's an architect, he designs buildings.' Eniiyi glared at him. They had argued about the first time they were asked too.'Em . . . maybe he's a civil engineer. They
08:39am, October 1Nsukka, Enugu State. The first of October was a joyous day for every Nigerian. To the adults and wizened, it signified another year since the country had gained her independence, to the children, it signified the day when they all went out and had festivals and fun.Which was why everybody at the Nsukka First Funfair had a smile on their faces as they walked about in different costumes and attires and prizes. All, except a certain half-Somali half-Nigerian girl. The girl had all her frown concentrated on the candy floss in her hand, as if it was being sly and staring at it long enough would reveal whatever it had been hiding. She was leaning forward on a railing that bothered a train ride and people passed by her every now and then, obstructing her view, which could have been more reason why she refused to misplace her frown.A excited group of kids garbed in green and white
The rest of the day was spent having more fun. When they left the funfair Mrs Okenwa took them out for lunch and then they went to the cinema. So, it was very dark by the time they arrived home. Mrs Okenwa quickly fixed them a meal and they all dug into it with gusto. Then they packed their dishes to the kitchen and Lastborn washed them, while Eniiyi went to turn on the TV. China changed the baby's diapers and went to the laundry room to wash some clothes. 'About what I said in the morning, that Baby Kanayo will say my name soon? I want to start working on it tomorrow,' Eniiyi said when Lastborn came to join her at the TV several minutes later. 'Sha be deceiving yourself there.' He rolled his eyes. 'You think it's that easy? He hasn't known us for that long to memorize our names—' 'Be talking like you know babies more than me.' It was Eniiyi's turn to roll her eyes. 'What? I do. You forget where I come from. You, is it that stuck up pl
The school was bustling with stale students resuming to a new session and mostly fresh, new students and their parents. They stopped at the admin office where they were given files to fill later and identity cards. They were also given a special form to fill, because, apparently, they were registered as temporary students. Then they were directed, along with several other new students to the junior secondary school one block. Their names were pasted on the notice boards outside each class and Eniiyi found out that she had been put in class 1C while Lastborn was in 1A.There China bid them goodbye and promised to come for them by four.In the class nobody was quite settled. Some loitered around in small groups, chatting, some sat alone at corners and read a book or slept while some had brought out their lunch and were already devouring what was meant for the afternoon.A short gir
The annoying buzzer rang again, this time signalling closing hours. Why did everything have to be harsh in secondary school? She thought, rolling her eyes.If she knew how a dying chipmunk sounded, the school buzzer's sound wasn't very different from it.The ICT teacher packed her books and bade the class goodnight. Eniiyi paused from doodling in her ring-binder jotter and packed her books in her backpack.'Do you live far away?' the twins asked. She shook her head and strapped on her school bag. 'It's eighteen minutes away by private car,' she said, remembering what Mrs Okenwa had said earlier.'Really? We live far away. About thirty minutes from here,' said Chidera, the boy.'Oh,' said Eniiyi, not knowing what else to say.The first class they'd had that day was Maths and the teacher had made each person introduce t
01:41 pm, October 5Tokyo, Japan.'It was our utmost pleasure doing business with Pengine Motor Corporation and we hope to have many more in the nearest future,' the head of the board of directors said.'The pleasure is ours,' Mide replied, shaking hands with the man.At this all the board members stood up and shook hands respectively with the two representatives from Pengine.'On behalf of the whole board of directors, may I interest you in a light dinner party at the company's conference center, later in the evening?' the head further said.'To celebrate our success inthe collaboration of our companies,' the CEO explained.Eartha looked at her husband and he nodded his affirmation.'Of course, sir. We're much obliged to attend,' she replied, smiling.'It's our utmost pleasure,' the board replied.
♟️🍒♟️🍒♟️🍒'Home, sweet home!' Eartha threw her arms around and breathed in deep. 'Do you smell that?'Mide, who looked grumpy reluctantly sniffed at the air.He hadn't slept well enough before they had had to head to the airport for their flight to Nigeria, and he hadn't been able to sleep well on the nineteen-half hour flight either, so it was no surprise that the poor guy was dead tired from lack of sleep.'Smell what? All I smell is the damn airport,' he said, tired. 'Babes, please, can we go look for our car now?''You're a spoilsport,' Eartha chided playfully. 'Smell the Nigerian soil joor.''This early morning? I'm tired sef,' Mide murmured, running a hand over his eyes.Eartha took a proper look at her husband. 'Ehya, pele dear. Did you sleep at all?''No!''Sorry o. Let's get goin

'Mide,' she said in reply, resisting the urge to break down and run into his arms, crying her apologies. She cleared her throat and made a serious face. 'What do you want here?'Mide smiled sadly and held her gaze again. 'Can I come in first?''Yes, Daddy!' Eniiyi picked up the bouquet and then took her father's hand and dragged him over the threshold.Eartha almost panicked. Why had Adekunbi done that? Now she'd have to fight the strong will to walk into his arms! She blinked again and firmed her lips. 'Mide, I told you -'Before she could finish speaking Mide deftly covered the space in between them. She sucked in a breath and tried to step back but then he touched her arm and she froze to the spot.'What do you want?' she croaked out. It took her all not to fall into his arms now. She could feel the heat radiating
Eartha and Eniiyi were still seated on the couch, long after the movie had ended. Eniiyi didn't think this was because the movie was that interesting. Her mommy had gone into one of her trances again. The girl was still trying to get used to it already since all these days. So, she waited patiently, still snuggled into her and watched the credits roll in on the TV screen. But as she stared on silently she couldn't help wondering all over when all this would stop. When she'd let them go back to Daddy, instead of sitting here all day and feeling sad.It was rather unnecessary, if somebody asked the girl.Thankfully, her mommy came out of her reverie quicker today. She sighed and pat Eniiyi's head.'Interesting movie, huh?' She stood up from beside her daughter and stretched.Even though she was smiling, Eniiyi could still see the slight worry lines that were be
~~••••~~Eartha sniffed back tears and wiped at her cheeks to check if she'd been crying. She smiled sadly and placed a hand over her tummy. It should be about thirty one days old, if she guessed right.Little one, we're going to be just fine, she said to her tummy. You'll see.As if her parents had suspected something, they had called just this morning when she was barely out of bed.She had tried to mask her miserable look and put on a bright face. They'd only called to ask about her and the family and she had lied. Had lied that she was doing just great, that her husband was fine and was not around, that their granddaughter was still as vibrant as ever and that she didn't want to wake her up from her sleep. She had long made up her mind that her parents weren't going to get
05:37pm, October15,Ikeja, Lagos State.Slowly, she stretched her hand and picked up the white stick on the wash basin. Then slouched back on the toilet seat lid and turned the stick to face her. Swallowing saliva, she continued to stare at the two bold lines stained on it.She later broke her stare and clutched the stick to her chest with both hands. By then worry had settled on her face. She stared into the unseen distance and poked the inner of her cheeks with her tongue.Well, am I not damned. She stared at it again and lowered her head. There was no denying it, pregnancy tests were true ninety-nine percent of the time.Well, I'm damned, she said to herself again. She couldn't even start to think of telling him about it. The idea just couldn't be stomached. It would open a new can of worms she'd rather keep closed.
It was almost seven O'clock when the gates buzzed open and Olumide pulled the silver-grey Pengine Ionia into their driveway. He immediately realized that the porch lights weren't on yet, same as any other outdoor light and he thought it was strange, since he could clearly see that the inside was lit.Why hadn't nobody turned the lights on? God, it was getting dark here.He suddenly became aware that someone was banging on the glass. It was Eniiyi, she must have been the one that buzzed him in. She was shouting something at him but he couldn't hear a thing, the car was still soundproof. He rolled down the glass so he could hear what she was saying.'. . . Why?' was all he caught.'What's wrong, Pumpkin Pie?'The girl pouted when she realized when she realized he hadn't heard anything she had said.'Daddy,' she whined i
To his astonishment, Baba only patted his head and slapped him lightly on the cheek. He gave a squeak of surprise. What was happening here? Had Baba hit his head? Had he taken the wrong kind of liquor today?'Thanks once again for understanding,' Mide said, still all smiles. He had watched the whole episode and had seen the shock on the little boy's face.He chuckled to himself. Nothing a little money and story couldn't do. He had just had to talk with the right amount of morose and regret in his voice to convince the man that his son had been childish to run away was truly sorry and eager to come back home to him. And of course, a little token of money for all his worries over the disappeared boy. Fourty thousand naira did the job just fine.He remembered Eartha punching him in the arm last night after he ended the call, for being a smooth operator.'No problem o. In fact, I sho
