Eira learnt that she had rested enough. There wasn't any exhaustion left in her. Instead of sitting quietly, she pledged to learn a few more things. She had a decision to make, and if things didn't go comfortably, she might need an escape plan.

Truthfully, she hadn't expected to receive much information from Nate after remembering what Josh had said but surprisingly, he was generous.

"So, you are a vampire too?" Was her first question.

Nate who had settled on a tanned couch placed close to the wall, instantly raised his eyes from his cellphone.

"Yes," He answered with a low voice.

She pressed her lips firmly together before putting another question forward, "And what are vampires like in real life?"

Nate seemed to understand that it was going to be a long questionnaire and got up from the couch to sit on the bed beside her.

"What vampire-based movies have you watched?" He asked, the ghost of a smile playing about on his lips.

"Only one. Twilight," And only because Arabella had forced h

Nate frowned before replying in a flat tone, "Well, Josh will figure out a way to wipe your memory of ever meeting any of us and everything you've learnt while being here." It was Eira's turn to frown. She wanted to forget what happened at the cemetery and her time in the dungeon but the rest, well..."What if I'm a witch but refuse to help?" She could hear her heart thumping in her ears while waiting with bated breath for his answer."Then let's hope Damien doesn't find out about anyone you love or care for."Nate's words resonated through her mind over and over again, rendering her restless. Eira couldn't get rid of the dreadful memory of the night at the graveyard and now there was a new fear; of what could happen if she tried to flee. For the first time in her life, she couldn't enjoy a hot shower. Even though the hot water trickled down her skin, tiny goosebumps formed out of a chill. Out of fear. Fear of the vampire. Damien. She didn't wish to hurt Arabella— directly or indirect

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" A harsh voice struck her ears just as all the whispers died down in an instant. She blinked her eyes open that had closed a while ago and saw Damien's angry face looking down at her. With confusion lingering in her mind, she looked into his piercing hazel eyes. In the darkness, they dilated.Slowly, she titled her head to the side, tearing her gaze from his face and looked at the door with a gaping mouth. It stood eerily silent. The night was ghost-quiet once again and her ears heard nothing but the uneven sounds of their breath. The whispers were gone."What were you doing?" Damien asked again, only this time he sounded a little concerned. He watched as Eira's eyes shifted back to him and she saw confusion scrawled all across his face.Raising a finger and pointing it towards the door, she replied in a tight voice, "I heard whispers."Those dark eyes examined her carefully before his hold on her loosened. Eira gulped and quickly shifted furt

For Josh, it was a relief to be back. While away, his mind was preoccupied with thoughts of Eira. He had returned to see her in one piece and was glad. He trusted Nate enough to leave her under his supervision, but the tiny moments when he felt reasonably doubtful left his heart thrumming loudly. Nate may have changed over the course of years but his past still clung onto him like a scar, clear and a living image of the monster he once used to be.He was silently grateful to Trish for dragging Damien away. Josh couldn't trust that vampire's instincts for a single second. Not when it concerned Eira.Soon they were walking towards the dungeons located under the richly furnished Carters Mansion; built with stones and bricks and metal hundreds of years ago. Eira fell into uneven steps behind him, her shoulders drooping. Without even looking, he could sense the nervousness in her. To his dismay, Nate and Damien followed closely. They stood in front of a brick wall, dusty and unsuspecting. N

Eira continued admiring the green fluid beneath her feet with curiosity as it dried gradually with every beat of her heart.Josh exchanged a few words with Damien, grimly while Nate played the silent spectator as usual. She wished he talked more. His voice was much friendlier than the other two.Eira had caught the surprise on Nate's face when the gem had melted away on her palm; he hadn't expected it either. The smile that followed with the glint in his brown eyes hinted at her that he had loved watching the scene.Without another word, the vampire duo left the chamber but not before Eira's gaze locked with Damien's and he sent her a glare. She ignored the tiny shiver that reverberated through her being. The door remained in sight from the inside but she guessed it had already disappeared from outside the walls surrounding them. And it would stay that way unless someone knew how to find the way in.Eira recalled several times she had heard stories of witches that people once believed

The candles burning placed on shelves around them provided enough warmth against the cold emanated by the black stone walls in contact with the ground's wet soil. The scent wafting from them tickled her nostrils pleasantly. In the meagre light, Josh's copper skin and dark brown eyes glowed alike."How does it feel like to do magic?" Eira raised the question and saw the corner of Josh's lips twitch. But they didn't form a smile as she had expected. It seemed as if he struggled to keep a straight face in response to her words. These actions made her feel more self-aware and wanting to keep a check on her mouth. He considered her with a gaze, his dark-brown eyes twinkled and then answered, "Everyone individual feels differently about magic. Some feel powerful, others feel happy. For me, it's liberating."She nodded briefly and wrapped her fingers around the while wax, bringing it closer to her. What would it feel like to her? Eira spared a moment to think about the question and then heave

While Eira continued to learn spells and secrets from her warlock tutor, Nate sulked in the living room.He knew each corner of it—names and faces of all the portraits hung over the walls, the number of candles in each candelabra, each intricate carving on every wooden furniture. He had been in it for quite a long time. The previous two months had actually been the same day on repeat for Nate.He distracted himself by spending his time cooking all the meals and occasionally shuffling through Josh's witchcraft stuff, browsed Instagram for several hours, talking about nothing and everything to Josh and sometimes Damien, and yet, there was still enough time left for him to think about the impending battle.Werewolves. The word always ran his blood cold. Colder than it usually was. Gone were the days when he could freely roam around the town; meet new girls everyday; admire the setting sun from the hilltops and kill some bunnies. The initial days had been scary. His body refused to sleep

  • After The Night   17 - Mark of Aurora (Part 2)

Damien never realised when his body slipped into a slumber. Even as a vampire, there was only so much exhaustion his body could hold on. One minute he was talking to Nate and the next, he was dreaming. He had kept himself awake the previous night just to make sure the witch wouldn't attempt to flee. She hadn't. But she had done something worse.Damien dreamt of two people chasing each other in a chrysanthemum field. A boy chasing a girl. Their faces were unclear but he knew who they were. He knew he was dreaming, but it seemed too real to be just a figment of his imagination. His ears caught the merry sound of her laughter, causing his lips to widen into a smile. He was floating lightly, surrounded by the cool breeze blowing about. He didn't know how long it lasted— hours, years or only a minute but the scene vanished when Nate woke him up. His eyes didn't open until his ears comprehended the panic in Nate's voice."Look, what he's saying!" Nate said, fright evident in his big blue eye

  • After The Night   18 - Finding Nate (Part 1)

Over the short span of a day, Eira picked up a few spells and executed them well. Josh had even remarked that she had done the summoning spell better than him and that made her grin non-stop. She learnt soon enough, however, that witchcraft was a tiresome deal. The ache in her sore muscles got more unbearable as she boarded up the spiral staircase. Out of habit, her fingers trailed over the metal railings at the sides and came away dusty. It seemed strange to her that the area was always covered with dust even though there was no way for it to enter. The hungry rumbling noises in her stomach grew louder as Eira inched closer to the kitchen. Josh had said she would find Nate in there. He was supposed to assist her in Josh's absence; basically as a target to execute spells on and check if they were really effective. She didn't find him, but chanced upon a few cupcakes in the fridge that instantly went down her food pipe. Her mouth released a satisfied burp and she made her way out int

The effect was seen on each one. Many lost their lives and many others people who they cared about. The signs of recovery however were blooming all around. People were forgiven for their bad deeds out of the kindness of the hearts of those who had been at the suffering end. Surprising to Josh, Eira had been strangely calm about having Raven in the mansion. The latter refused to return to the Black Hall and although she denied it, the warlock knew, deep inside she was mourning for Alexander. Nate—another surprise to him—had been chosen to represent the vampires in the supernatural coucil. The bloodsuckers had been oddly agreeable and united about peace—again another surprise for the warlock."Are you giving up already?" Josh asked when he saw Eira lazily throw the herbs in
