Valerie POV
I felt a needle prick my arm and I quickly fluttered my eyelids open. The cold seeped into my skin, my blurry vision fading off, giving a clearer view of my surroundings. Glancing around the room, the scent of medics and antibiotics waxed my nostrils and my face wrinkled in disgust. Where the hell am I? "You're awake" A soft voice rang across the room and I blinked back. My thoughts came into shape as my mind raced with different thoughts. What happened? I muttered and just then, the memories swam right in, flooding heavily that my head spinned and whooshed for a few minutes, a sizzling headache suddenly attacked me as I recall the past events. Liam? He had kicked me and left me to bleed to death together with my sister. He had divorced me and chose my sister and they had accused me of extra-marital affairs, accused me of murder and left me to die in the house! I would make them pay, they would feel twice the pain I felt, they'll rot in pain and tears and I'll still not bat an eyelid. My baby? I suddenly remembered as my hands instinctively wrapped around my belly. I had lost my child and it was their fault. They wouldn't escape it this time but what the hell happened. I should be dead right? So why am I in a fucking hospital? Shit! I cursed under my breath with hatred, attempting to stand up from the white bed I lay until I felt the needle pierced into my arm. I winced in pain at the feeling, momentarily forgetting the presence of someone in the room. "Careful, you'll hurt yourself" The voice says and I looked up, my eyes darting towards the far-end corner of the room until it landed on two people. One wore a large white coat with a spectacle adorning his slightly wrinkled face, he was a doctor while the other one, I couldn't recognize but he oozed off an incredible strange aura, one that demanded respect. I suddenly piqued at him with interest, and he flashed me a smile, showing off his sparkling white sets of teeth. My heartbeats skipped as he did that. What the hell was that? My vision was still blurry a bit and I couldn't make out his face clearly enough. "Doctor, is she okay now?" The strange man asked, turning to face the old doctor beside him. "Yes, surprisingly she doesn't seem to have sustained any internal injuries which I would counter as a miracle, providing the fact that it was a fatal accident" The doctor said, his gaze intent on mine as if trying to question his medical expertise. Huh? What accident? What the hell were they talking about? Confusion coursed through me, adding to the throbbing headache I felt and my lips were forced to utter the one question that charged me with curiosity. "Can I know today's date please" My voice came off as a faint sound but I knew they heard me. I was weak and the headache was increasingly painful with each second that passed by. They seemed taken aback by my question but the man brought out his phone, walked towards me and shoved the screen towards my face. 1st, January, 2024! "Ahhhhhhh!" I screamed, face-palming myself on the forehead, trying to ease the frustration, confusion and ache that pulsed through me. Nothing was making sense. The date was clearly six months ago before I got pregnant. Was this a second life? I remembered bleeding while dying, I clearly craved for a second life, was that wish honored? Damn, I was reborn! But with my baby gone ! I didn't have my baby but I was fucking given a second chance! A chance to make them pay. Tears glistened at the corners of my eyes as I recalled what I went through to have my baby. Revenge! Revenge! Revenge! The words echoed in my head. Liam made me lose my baby because of that bitch called Stephanie. ! I groaned again, earning a deep frown from the strange man who stood in front of me. "Are you okay? Do you feel any pain?" The man asked, his tone laced with concern and I darted my eyes to look at him closely For the first time I froze, he looked handsome and dangerously attractive and I gulped down nervously. "Who are you please?" I was forced to ask, my eyes shimmering with heightened interest, my lashes blinking innocently at him, refusing to break contact with his gaze. For the first, I craved to stare at someone other than Liam, his sharp jawline, attractive pink lips and ocean blue eyes seemed to awaken a tumultuous storm of emotions within me. He suddenly sat beside me on the bed and shoved back the strand of hair on his face to the back, allowing me to get a clearer view of him. I felt the butterflies in my belly churn with erratic movements, coursing through me with multiple flicks. My cheeks suddenly gave away to red roses, my heart danced in ecstasy as I inhaled the scent of his cologne. I could recognize it, one of an assorted brand. Who ever this guy was, was surely not an ordinary man He was more than that and no matter how dangerous he seemed, my body seemed to have suddenly developed a mind of its own. "I'm Ryan" He replied politely, flashing another warm smile at me which made my heart skip for the second time. Ryan? The name sounded sweet but echoed a familiarity in my ears, one that couldn't be denied. I searched my memories, trying to remember where I had heard that name. No matter how faint it seemed, I was sure Liam had once mentioned that name to me. "I'm Ryan Devante" He added, and just then, everything conflicted. The memories collided, shaping in form for a detailed remembrance and the realization hit me. Ryan Devante? The heir of the Devante group? The richest businessman in New York. The Ex-Italian Mafia Lord, fierce and feared by all. A force to reckon with. Liam was the head of the Mafia but he dreaded Ryan Devante. With a snap of his fingers, nations crumbled to ruins. He was tagged to be ruthless and I never prayed to cross paths with him What the hell did I get myself into?Valerie POV I gulped down for the tenth time, emotions swimming through me with a mixture of fear and nervousness. My flushed cheeks gradually fading as I clutched to my racing heart. The shock finally registered in my senses. Ryan Devante? Hell no! I What the hell am I still doing here? I should be on my heels but here I am, fondling nervously with my fingers, trying to freeze down the pores of heat that already enveloped my hands. Suddenly, there was a ring. A familiar ring and it buzzed in my dress. It was my phone and thankfully, there would be an excuse to escape from here. I moved my hands slowly towards my pocket and brought it out. Glancing at the screen, I saw the caller and almost threw it at the wall but I knew better than anyone to remain calm and collected. "Hello" I picked up with Ryan's eyes running a scrutiny on my body and making me shudder with trepidation. "Where the hell are you, Valerie, you're not supposed to leave the fucking house!" Liam, my

It was obvious the tension between them wasn't palpable and in that moment of unease, I hailed down a cab and rushed in, not wanting to wait for the aftermath of what would happen between the two men.Freedom at last!***I alighted from the cab and paid the driver and quickly rushed into the building to pack my things. It was over after all.First thing tomorrow morning after I sign the divorce papers, I would leave New York to find myself again and then come back to face Liam and my sister!I skidded through the stairs quickly and accidentally crashed into my
Ryan POV"Sir we found her" One of my guards called Bradus said as my gaze shifted from the files of work that laid on the desk to him. " Let her go" I said, and his brows arched in surprise."But sir,---""It's okay, just let her go, Monica is the least of my problems right now, you can go" I cut in on his words, his mouth hung open, breaching anything he had wanted to say. I knew he would be shocked because I don't go back on my words but Monica had violated that rule of mine. "Okay, sir" He replied, bowed and left. I sighed, my mind drifting to numerous things.Grandfather had called and asked me to get married as that was the only way he would give his last assets to me or give it to the government. I had hired Monica to do the job but it seemed the slut looked through my files and ran away with my money.I asked my guards to find her and she had been seen at the airport boarding the first flight that came in sight but I didn't see the need to capture her anymore. If she wanted
Valerie’s POVSunlight filtered through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing the bedroom in a golden hue. I blinked against the brightness, groaning softly as I turned to my side—only to freeze.I wasn’t alone.Ryan Devante lay beside me, his breathing steady, his muscular frame relaxed against the silk sheets. His dark hair was tousled in a way that should’ve looked messy but instead made him look even more devastatingly handsome. And then it hit me.I had agreed to marry him.A billionaire. A man I barely knew.Oh, God.My stomach twisted as the events of last night replayed in my head, his absurd proposal, his reasoning, and worse, my acceptance. I had said yes. I had willingly agreed to a contract marriage with the most enigmatic, unreadable man I had ever met. What the hell was I thinking?I needed to get up. To clear my head. Valerie’s POVI should have known the day was going to be a disaster the moment I stepped out of the bedroom. The mansion was eerily quiet as I walked down the grand hallway, my bare feet making no sound against the polished marble floors. It was almost unsettling—like the calm before a thunderstorm.I had barely made it to the dining room when I saw Ryan sitting at the head of the table, dressed in an impeccably tailored suit, flipping through his phone as he sipped his coffee. He looked completely at ease, as if today wasn’t the day we were about to turn the entire world upside down.I, on the other hand, felt like I was about to walk into an ambush."You’re finally down," he said without looking up from his phone."Unfortunately," I muttered under my breath as I pulled out a chair. He smirked. "You sound excited.""I’m thrilled," I deadpanned, grabbing a piece of toast.Ryan finally looked up, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "You’ll survive.""Easy for you to say," I shot back. "
Valerie’s POV I woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing aggressively on the nightstand. For a moment, I lay there, disoriented, the events of the previous day rushing back like a freight train. The public appearance, the forced smiles, the uncomfortable stares… Daniel Mercer. With a groan, I reached for my phone and squinted at the screen. Valerie’s POVThe entire ride back to Ryan’s penthouse was tense. My heart was still racing from the hooded figure watching us. Ryan hadn’t said a word since we got into the car, but his grip on the steering wheel was tight, his jaw clenched as if he were holding something back.I shifted in my seat, glancing at him. “Ryan…”“Not now,” he muttered, his voice sharp.I pressed my lips together, feeling frustration bubble inside me. “You can’t just ignore this. Who the hell was that?”Ryan didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he pulled the car into the underground parking lot of his building, put it in park, and exhaled slowly. Then he turned to me, his dark eyes locked onto mine.“I don’t know,” he admitted, which was somehow more unsettling than if he had.I crossed my arms. “You sure about that?
