MARIANNE
I sighed in relief as I thanked Britney repeatedly. "There's no need to thank me," she expressed. "You are my best friend and I will do anything for you." The next morning, just as my lawyer had promised, I was arraigned before a judge. I had been restless throughout the night as it was my first time being in a cell. I tried not to cry because I knew it wouldn't help my situation. I convinced myself that I was just unfortunate. I never should have married Tony. After the judge questioned me, I took a plea of not guilty. My attorney didn't seem pleased by that but I didn't care. No one was going to make me admit to something I never did. Since it was my first appearance, I expected that I would be granted bail and allowed to show up in court from the comfort of my home during the preliminary hearings. I planned to get the best lawyer for myself once I was released on bail and got access to my phone. However, nothing like that happened. The judge allowed a ten minutes recess and I was called back in. The prosecutor began to speak and afterward called me to the docks to narrate everything that happened. Once I was done, he asked me to step down and return to my seat. When I did, the prosecutor stated that he was calling one of the three witnesses he had for the day. I turned to my lawyer to ask him why witnesses were being called in on the day of my first appearance but he ignored me, got up, and took another seat. Since Britney was still sitting beside me and holding my hands, I relaxed. In the end, her testimony would set me free. The first witness of the prosecutor walked into the court and it was none other than Tony's younger sister, Abby. Her eyes were puffy and I guessed it was because she had been crying. I knew how much she loved Tony and how much he doted on her. I had done so much for her ever since I married her brother. I gave her boyfriend a job and had her on my payroll even though she did nothing but live a lavish lifestyle and spend above her means. I was just a year older than her but she was practically my responsibility, and it was all because of my love for her brother. I waited for her to tell the court how amazing I had been to her and my late husband. After taking her oath, however, the first sentence she made was, "Everyone knows that Marianne is an extremely mean and evil woman." My eyes widened in shock and I could not believe my ears. Britney put her arm around me at this point and the black woolen jacket she wore, provided me with some warmth as I felt chilled to the bone. Abby continued, "Just because she had more money than my brother, she threatened him often. While he was still alive, my brother complained to me a lot. He was tired of the marriage but he could not leave because he was scared that she would kill him. Her wickedness pushed him to have an affair and finally, she killed him. She must pay for my brother's death. "That is a lie!" I got up and spoke as I could not bear to hear any more of her lies. She was crying profusely, making her look like the truthful one. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I said, "I did nothing of what she has said. Tony and I never had issues. We were happy and loved each other. I am not evil or quarrelsome, even my employees can attest to that. My marriage was perfect and that was why I was so shocked when I saw the video of my husband's infidelity. He was running down the stairs when he fell and died." The judge who waited for me to finish said, "Mrs. Tony, you are not allowed to speak unless I give my consent. Don't repeat the mistake you have just made. Now sit down." I quietly sat down and wiped my tears while Abby was taken off the witness box. "I am going to call on my second witness for the day," the prosecutor continued. I watched in surprise as my secretary, Mildred entered the courtroom and went straight to the witness box. She was one of the most loyal and competent people in my company and I treated her like my sister. When her mum had cancer, Mildred had been devastated but I acted quickly. I started an international cancer foundation, spending millions of dollars to fund more research, ensuring that her mom got the best treatment. Once her mom recovered, I let her stay away from work for six months so she could be with her mom and during that time, I ensured she was still paid her salary and gave her a lot of financial bonuses. I didn't know why she did not tell me that she would be testifying in court but I believed her words would prove how much of a liar and ingrate Abby was. After taking an oath, Mildred began, "My boss Mrs. Tony, is a tyrant. She is evil and all the employees in her company are scared of her, including me. It was no secret that even her husband was terrified of her. I'm not surprised she killed him. She has a heart of stone and money is all she cares about." "Mildred!" I got up and cried. "How can you tell such lies against me after all I've done for you?" The judge got upset at this point and struck her table, "Silence! One more word from you Mrs. Tony and you will be held in contempt of this court. Sit down!" I immediately sat down and wiped my face dry. There was no use crying over useless people. Once Britney gave her testimony and vindicated me, I would show them what a tyrant was capable of. I looked at Britney who gave me a reassuring smile. She was the only one I had left. I didn't know what I would have done without her. After Mildred left the witness box, the prosecutor called on Britney as his third witness and I smiled. She patted my back and got up. Before approaching the box, she took off her black jacket and placed it on my hands. She was wearing a long, sleeveless lemon gown and my gaze stayed on her as she entered the witness box. Once she was given a Bible to take her oath, my eyes caught a gold bracelet around her wrist. I gulped as I recalled the sex video that was sent to me yesterday. It was at that moment I realized that I had seen that bracelet before on Britney's wrist. The same bracelet, the same slender wrist. Britney was the woman who had an affair with my husband. I felt like I was seeing a movie. I wasn't able to react or do anything else. I watched silently as she took an oath, and afterward said, "I'm sorry, Marianne. I know you asked me to lie to everyone and cover for you. But I can't do that. I am under oath, and your husband was a very good man. An innocent life was lost and justice must prevail. Your honor, Marianne pushed her husband from the top of the stairs. She killed him with her hands and I witnessed it all." I closed my eyes as tears once again rolled down my cheeks.MARIANNE Everything felt like a dream. Just like that, I had been condemned for something I never did. My only crime was being too kind and trusting the wrong people. As I was being transported by ship along with a few other prisoners, the judge's words echoed in my ears, "This court finds the accused; Mrs. Tony, guilty of first-degree murder and sentences her to life imprisonment with hard labor in the Norwegian Island Prison. I recalled the triumphant look on Britney's face as I was being taken away and could not understand what I ever did wrong to her. When I met her so many years ago, I had just finished high school. Being the daughter of the richest man in the city, I lived in affluence as opposed to her who was struggling to get by. I saw her working as a waiter at a party and took her side when a guest treated her disrespectfully. We got close from that night and I got to find out that she had no family. She was an orphan who had to work from a very young age just to
MARIANNE If it weren't for the date and time stamp on the video, I would have thought Paula was lying to me. As I watched the video, everything began to piece together in my head. I recalled when Tony had first approached me for a relationship. I had refused his advances, especially since I had just clocked eighteen, but Britney kept encouraging me to give him a chance, claiming we were perfect for each other and would be together forever. Back then, I was amazed at how Tony and I had the same tastes, interests, and even fashion sense. I believed he was truly destined for me. Only after Paula's revelation did I realize that Britney had planted him in my life and told him about my likes and dislikes. No wonder he seemed so perfect in my eyes and I ended up falling in love with him. They deceived me for so long and plotted my downfall. The false testimonies from my secretary and Tony's sister finally made more sense to me. I felt so much anger surge within me and a deep yearn
TROY After two years, I was back in the Scandinavia, the place that took everything from me. I had rented the whole beach for the evening because I wanted to be alone. I stood by my once favorite beach in Oslo and closed my eyes as memories from the past flooded my mind; Her beautiful smile, and the warmth of her body, pressed against mine as we stared at the stars together. Aislinn was everything to me until she was snatched away so cruelly. I opened my eyes and stared at the water, hoping its calmness would soothe my turbulent heart. All of a sudden, something caught my attention. Floating and approaching from a distance, I tried to make out what it was. I took a few steps closer, dipping my legs into the water. I gasped when I realized it was a person; a woman, and judging by the way she looked, I knew she was dead. I turned and wanted to leave but a question struck my mind; what if she wasn't dead? What if Aislinn was in a similar situation and needed help? Would I have
JADEI stood in front of Max Anderson's door and my heart raced uncontrollably. I had many times imagined how special my first time would be with the love of my life, Henry, but now I was about to sell it away.I summoned up the courage I needed and knocked on the door."Come in," a voice replied from inside.I pushed the door and it opened. I walked into the room and saw Max Anderson sitting on the bed with a towel around his waist and empty bottles of wine on the table beside his bed. There had been so many scandals surrounding him but he never seemed to care about them. His most prominent name was 'man whore' and I detested people like him but there I was, in his room, in the club where I worked, ready to give myself to him."I was told you are a virgin," he said without sparing me a glance, as his gaze remained fixed on his phone.I nodded, "Yes I am.He laughed and finally looked at me, scrutinizing me from my head to my toes, "I'm not going to be fooled twice. Hold on, I'll have
JADEWhen I opened my eyes in the morning, I felt sore down there. Last night, Max had gone on and on until I passed out. My head ached and my body felt weak but I knew I had to get the money from Max to the doctors.I got up, put on my clothes, and looked around the room but there was no sign of Max Anderson. Ignoring the pain in my body, I rushed into the bathroom but he wasn't there.I became alarmed, thinking he had left without giving me the money but then I spotted a cheque slip on the table beside the bed. A hundred thousand dollars was written on it along with his signature but there was no name and date on it. I heaved a sigh of relief and quickly left with the cheque slip. When I arrived at the hospital, Henry's mom was by his bedside sitting dejectedly."I got the money," I said, giving the cheque to her.She took it from me and stared at it in shock, "A hundred thousand! Max Anderson? How did you get him to give you this cheque?""I got a job working for him," I replied.
JADE"What? How can you say I disgust you?" I asked. "Henry, it's me, Jade, the one who went above and beyond to save your life.""Yes," he replied. "I know you are the Jade who saved my life, and also the Jade who stabbed me in the back.""I stabbed you in the back?" I asked, puzzled. "What are you talking about, Henry?""Don't pretend before me, Jade." He snapped. "I know how you went about having sex with different men at your place of work."I shook my head, "No, baby, I didn't do such a thing."He scoffed, "You didn't do such a thing? Tell me, how did you get the money you paid for my treatment?""Well, actually," I tried to explain. "Listen, Henry, it's not.....""Don't tell me that," he yelled, interrupting me. "Yes, I am grateful for what you did, but you know I would never have given my consent for you to do that. How could you betray me in such a way?""Henry, you were dying, and your mom told me to do whatever was necessary. I never planned to do such a thing. I went to my
JADEAt the station, Henry appeared but I denied setting fire to his car despite how much he insisted I did it. "Do you have any evidence?" The officer speaking to us asked him."I saw her with my eyes," he replied. "Before I could come out of the house, my car had already gone up in flames. I spent almost fifty thousand dollars on that car and I am yet to insure it. She has to give me back my money, I don't care how she gets it."I scoffed and stared at the officer as I said, "He owes me a hundred thousand dollars and he wants me to pay him? Let him give me back my money."The officer sighed and asked Henry, "Do you owe her a hundred thousand dollars?"He shook his head, "That's a big lie. She gave my mom a hundred thousand dollars out of her own volition. No one asked her for it and there was no agreement to pay it back, so I do not owe her.Even though I had decided not to cry, tears rolled down my cheeks, "Henry, was it not from the hundred thousand dollars your life was saved? W
JADEI suddenly freaked out, "No, doctor! This cannot be! This pregnancy is going to ruin my life. Please help me, I need to get rid of it. I cannot keep it.""You need to calm down," the doctor replied. "If you want to get rid of this pregnancy, it can be done. However, we need the consent of the father.""But I'm not married, and he doesn't even know," I replied."I'm sorry, but that's just it." The doctor responded. As I left the health center and returned to my workplace, I decided that I would hide my pregnancy for the time being and save up enough money. Afterward, I would go to a different hospital where I'd be allowed to get rid of the pregnancy without the consent of the father.I returned to work like nothing had happened but the constant morning sickness made life difficult for me. Nevertheless, I continued to do my best and did whatever I could to get tips. Two months later, after gathering a sufficient amount of money, I planned to visit the hospital the next day for the
