Thursday. Task Force Headquarters, Washington, DC.

JAMIE SAT IN LOGAN'S office, the lights out, the evening playing in his head.

Tabby had given him a dozen opportunities to make his move and complete his objective. Instead of doing what he was sent here to do, Jamie had allowed himself to get lost in playing his part, in the getting close to her stage of things, he hadn't realized just how far he allowed it to go until it was too late.

Sitting here in the dark it was easy for Jamie to see how things would have gone if he didn't have the task of bugging Tabby's phone. Their chemistry had brought them together, but it was her inclination to laugh, to see the good in things that had kept conversation rolling. He'd been interested in her, what she said. And yeah, the packaging was hot as hell.

If it were just up to him, he'd have taken her back to his place or gone to hers. He'd have called into work and done everything in his power to woo her into giving him a chance. Things would be hot and heavy for a while, but then she'd realize some things were more important than him. Like her career or whatever else a woman of that caliber did.

The lights flipped on, bathing the room in harsh yellow light.

"What the fuck?" Logan stood at Jamie's side staring down at him.

"Hey, TL." Jamie rubbed one eye with the heel of his hand.

Logan snorted and moved around the desk. "I take it last night was a success?"

"No, actually." Jamie glanced down at his hands, his tie wrapped around his left palm. "I couldn't go through with it."

"Come again?" Logan's chair creaked.

Jamie glanced up at Logan leaning toward him, lips tightly compressed, dark eyes locked on him. "I couldn't do it.

"You what?"

Jamie pushed up out of the chair, the sudden restlessness driving him to move. "Bugging her phone is wrong. We don't have a warrant. It's illegal. It jeopardizes the DoD's relationship to HiTech. Nothing about this plan was a good idea."

"Silva, our job is to follow orders," Logan said slowly, command threaded through each word.

"I know that." Jamie stopped, facing his TL. "I also know I got out so I could question my orders."

Logan leaned back and shook his head. "What else? I'm going to have to update Zora when she gets in. I don't want any surprises because she's already going to hate hearing this."

Fuck.

This was the part Jamie knew there was no coming back from.

"I told Tabby we needed her help. Not why or anything, just that-"

"God damn it, Silva." Logan covered his face with his hands and groaned.

"It was the right thing to do."

"Go. Get out of here before Zora gets here. The others should be in the gym. Join them for PT. I'll come update you with our next move, which might be hauling our asses back to Seattle."

Jamie grimaced, but there was nothing more he could say. He didn't regret not following through with his orders, but maybe he could have simply left instead of coming clean. All he'd known at the moment was that he had to try to salvage things. Not for himself, but for the job. He'd made his bed where Tabby was concerned and that door was shut.

He left Logan's office. There were more people around, trickling in as the day began in earnest. It was so damn quiet in here. He couldn't stand it. Fleeing to the gym was far preferred to standing in a silent room while people played spy.

The gym occupied part of the basement level. In the week they'd been in DC Jamie had only seen a few agents make use of the gym. By and large it was left to their team to use as they needed.

He changed into workout clothes kept in a locker. Even just removing his suit helped ease some of the weight from his shoulders.

Harper and Evan were out on the basketball court. Judging by the sweat dampening their clothes they'd been there for a while.

"Look what the cat dragged in." Harper lobbed the basketball at Jamie.

He caught it, dribbled a few times then shot a layup toward the hoop. The whoosh of the ball through the net at least told him he'd been able to do one thing right in the last twenty-four hours.

Harper rounded up the ball then returned to the line. "Did you go home at all?"

"Are we going to play ball or gossip?" Jamie spread his arms.

Harper snickered and made some comment to Evan, but that was it. They settled into a game that had no rules, no real purpose except horsing around.

It was moments like these when Tucker's absence was most notable. He might not talk a lot, but he'd always played a little dirty. Always pushed them to compete harder, sweat more.

"Let's get some water," Harper said after more than an hour had passed.

Jamie was finally feeling truly awake and more like himself. He crossed to a cooler containing bottled water and pulled one out. Harper and Evan sat on the bench lining one wall of the court.

"Hey." Harper glanced up at Jamie, squinting at him with one eye. "You heard anything about Tucker?"

"No. You?"

Harper wrinkled his nose. "Nah."

"He'll show." Evan tilted his head back, eyes shut.

"Even TL hasn't heard from him in two weeks. You seriously think he'll just show back up like nothing happened?" Jamie tipped his bottle up and drank half the contents.

Evan shrugged.

"You know what I did hear?" Harper glanced over his shoulder, then up at the ceiling.

Yeah, they'd covered the suspicion that someone was always listening to them in this building. Jamie took a step closer and Evan turned to face Harper.

"I heard Ethan was moved," he said.

Jamie froze.

"Ethan, the guy you brought back from the Middle East?" Evan peered up at Jamie.

He cleared his throat. "Yeah."

Jamie had only heard of Ethan before a few months back. Supposedly the guy had died while on assignment around the time Jamie had been hired by Aegis Group. A framed picture of the guy had hung in the lobby of their training hall, a reminder that even this job cost lives. Harper and Jamie had pitched in to help Lepta Team with a job going sideways when they'd learned what really happened on Ethan, only the man they'd met wasn't the man they'd heard about. Jamie wasn't sure what had been done to him, but he wasn't normal anymore. NO human moved like Ethan did, not to mention the fact it had taken some heavy duty tranquilizers to keep Ethan sedated enough to bring him home. The little Jamie had heard about the guy since then hadn't been good.

"Where'd they move him to?" Jamie asked.

Harper shook his head. "No idea. I hadn't heard anything until now. I was kind of hoping you knew something?"

"No, man." Jamie blew out a breath. "That was a crazy ass op."

Harper groaned. "Tell me about it."

Ethan snorted. "Maybe someday I'll be popular enough other teams want me."

"In your dreams, book worm." Harper flicked water at the other man.

"Promise me this?" Jamie looked at Evan then Harper. "If that happens to me, if I'm brainwashed, you'll shoot me?"

Harper barked a laugh. "What?"

Jamie locked eyes with Evan. The man had immigrated to the US from Ukraine with his family as a teen. He'd grown up with stories, seeing things the rest of them hadn't.

Evan slowly nodded his head. "Yeah. Okay."

Harper's laugh faded and he stared at the side of Evan's head. "You're serious?"

"It's what I'd want you to do for me," Evan said.

"You two are crazy." Harper shook his head.

"I wouldn't want to live not knowing who I was, maybe even hurting people I cared about." Jamie pushed the memories of Lebanon into the back of his mind. "You weren't there, Harper. You didn't see him."

"Someone did that to him. We have to be able to undo it. I wouldn't want to give up hope, so count me out of this." Harper pushed to his feet.

"You didn't get up close to him like I did. If I thought I was going to be a risk to my family like that guy is, I sure as hell would want one of you to stop me."

Harper wheeled around. "Stop you. Not kill you. There's a big fucking difference, man."

Maybe there was, but deep down Jamie wasn't willing to risk the safety of others on his account. He loved his family that much.

"Silva." Logan's voice reverberated through the gym, followed by the staccato tap tap tap of a woman's heels.

"Oh, shit," Harper muttered.

Jamie flinched and turned to see Logan and SSA Zora Clark headed straight for him. Neither appeared pleased and he had a pretty good idea why.

He just had to go through the motions and not screw up.Despite being born with the last name Astor, he wasn't related to the more famous family bearing the same name. He'd learned early in life that those who reached for what they wanted were the true successes. His office phone began to ring.He glared at the black phone. Hadn't he said he wasn't to be bothered?Dalton ignored the call, pushed to his feet and crossed to the door. He jerked it open and glared at the young man sitting behind the chrome and glass desk."What did I tell you?" Dalton snapped."I know." The young man held up his hands. "B

Or did the entire building operate under a dome of protection?Holy shit. She was willing to bet that this wasn't just a task force, this was also a black site. An off the books joint operation if she had to guess. That would explain why no one had approached her directly.Tabby didn't know if she should hope the problem centered around her drone prototype or not. Tabby had the sudden impression that she wasn't prepared for this meeting. Not in the least. What reason did they have to ask her here? What role did she or her father's company play in what was going on?"We'll be over here." Jamie led her toward the end of t

Saturday. HiTech Inc. R&D Lab, Washington, DC.JAMIE STARED UP AT the brick facade of the nondescript building that held HiTech's Research and Development labs. Given what was being tested here, he understood why there wasn't a sign advertising HiTech on it.And this was Tabby's domain. The world where she got to create. As part of his research he'd looked up various HiTech projects begun once she came on as a full-time employee. The number of things she'd developed was astounding. She wasn't just a pretty face with keen business sense; she was smart as hell, too. If Jamie hadn't grown up with intelligent, successful women in his family he might be intimidated. He reached into his pickup truck and grabbed the lattes from the center console. Tabby might be willing to forgive him and work with him, but that didn't mean they were good. At this point he'd do what he needed to try to improve his standing with her, including caffeine bribery.Jamie headed toward the front doors.

TABBY GLANCED AT THE clock. He was making up time. The first of the four tests had taken him forty minutes rather than the thirty allotted to him. The second he'd wrapped up in exactly thirty minutes. Now, so long as he didn't fall for the trap on the third he was likely going to make up around seven minutes, leaving thirty-three minutes for the final test. She kept her arms crossed, following his hands via the camera perched above him giving her a bird's-eye view of the whole test.Drinks with him was so totally not what she wanted. Not in the least. Should Jamie succeed, if he really had the skills and ability to learn what he needed to operate her systems, it was good for all of them. If he failed, it would only mean she had that much more teaching to do, so clearly she wanted him to succeed thereby making her job easier.Yeah, that was a big, fat lie.Against her own self-interest, she wanted him to beat the time she'd set for him, both because he was obviously good at

Sunday. Task Force Headquarters, Washington, DC.JAMIE OPENED HIS FRONT door, more to stop the pounding than because he was ready to see people today. Harper and Evan stood on the other side, dressed in slacks and Aegis Group stitched polos for today's meeting."Who did you spend the night with?" Harper grinned and leaned his forearm on the entry."No one." That was part of Jamie's problem."You ready yet? Or do you need to primp a bit more, princess?""Fuck you." Jamie glanced around, searching for his keys."What time did you get home?" Evan asked. "We came by to see if you wanted to grab dinner, but your truck was gone.""Because we were in the lab until midnight. My God damn brain is mush." Jamie understood why Tabby was adamant about going with regardless of how they were going to get the shipment."It took you that long to figure out you should always cut the blue wire?" A week later...QUENTIN WISHED HE COULD savor this moment. He slapped the cuffs on the pint-sized asshole who'd had Candi's life in the palm of his hand that fateful night. Was it just a week ago? This should be more satisfying. It was, in a way.Eleven perfectly timed arrests effectively cut off all the heads of Metis. According to Nadine's notes, there was still one unknown head of the organization out there. But they were not alone. Metis itself wouldn't be ordering the death of anyone else. But it didn't bring Nadine back. It didn't restore the time Quentin had lost with Candi. It did make the world a little better, and in the end that's what mattered. Nadine's final acts were all about sacrifice and justice.Quentin stepped back as the FBI agents continued doing their job. He'd been granted permission to be here. As CIA, he had no jurisdiction nor the ability to make an arrest. Still, putting those cuffs on the little asshole felt good.Nadine would be pleased.

Now and wind pelted them. Her teeth chattered. And yet, it felt good. The bone chilling cold reminded her that she was alive."Are we going to knock?" she asked."No. Come on. The FBI lookouts know why we're here."Q led her through the yard and a side gate. A uniformed police officer sat at the first-floor window watching them. Q nodded. Candi lifted a hand, but let it drop to her side without actually waving."This way."Solar lights chased away the shadows, making it less ominous. In a few hours, the world would wake up to a blanket of new snow. A clean slate.Candi didn't know how to feel right now.On one hand, they'd found Nadine. They'd done what they'd set out to do.But, Nadine was dead. Her final act had been to save Q and give them the means with which to combat two threat

He staggered sideways, only for Nadine to shove at him again."Move, damn it," she barked. They dove behind the shelter of a single boulder. This side of the creek the ground was rockier.Quentin yanked his sidearm out of his holster and sucked down air.Unlike the men at their back, Quentin didn't have unlimited ammunition. Not unless he took theirs."Give me a gun," Nadine hissed. He still couldn't trust her. "No.""Damn you," she growled."Come out and it'll be quick," a voice called out.Nadine laid a finger across her lips and stared him down.He opened his mouth, but she spoke first."You can't think I'm that stupid," she said. Candi's heart raced as she watched the man kneel by the bag and yank the zipper. She lunged left, behind a tree and drew her weapon.Overhead, there was no mistaking the whining whirl of helicopter blades. It might not be anyone friendly, but DC was about a half hour away by air. They'd called Q's contacts about forty-five minutes ago.Could that be help? More enemies? Something else? She didn't know, but she had to hope. She had to believe this wasn't how it was going to end."Hey!" the man barked. She clicked the safety off the gun.Candi had mostly blocked out the fact that she'd shot and killed someone after being kidnapped. Now, it was on repeat in her mind.Could she do it again? If she got to tell Q she loved him-again-she'd pull the trigger. Her hands shook. The leaves rustled underfoot, allowing her to track the man's movements. Saturday. Harper's Ferry, VA.CANDI CROUCHED BETWEEN THE rotted out remnants of a tree and a dense holly bush. This was as close as she could get to the house without being seen.Where had Q and Nadine gotten to?Candi had run out of the house, unable to hear anything beyond the blood pumping in her ears. She'd pushed ahead, convinced those men were right behind her. The only thought in her head was that she couldn't lag behind or else Q would have to leave her.Only, it had happened the other way around. She didn't know when or how Q got separated from her, but when she'd paused to turn around and look, he was gone. Her teeth chattered together. Had something been on the news about a cold front? The winter had been awfully mild so far. It would be their luck for snow to settle in today. Please, no...Where were they? She cautiously peered out through the branches. All but one of the men who'd arrived at the house had gone into the woods. Was this a bad idea?

That, or her scar tissue was warning her about the turning weather. The warm spell was most certainly over."This way," Quentin whispered. Her heart twinged. This was her fault. She was going to get this boy killed. And for what?Over the years, she'd lost her focus. She'd become a leaf, being blown about with no respite. She'd done things to stay afloat, things she regretted.Like involving Quentin. He didn't know it yet, but she wasn't leaving this forest alive."Shit," Quentin muttered."What-?"She never got the question out. Her foot slipped on the underbrush then she tripped on a root. Only, the ground wasn't where she thought it should be. She pitched forward and just kept going. Her shoulder hit the steep incline first, then the rest of her. Limbs tore at her clothing. Rocks scraped her skin. Something rubbery smacke
