Chapter 6: A Rogue's Wish

My eyes crack open, and I find myself inside a room I've never seen before. It's fancy, with paintings on its walls, two sofas and a centre table, and the bed at the head of the room. I raise my eyes to the ceiling and I see the chains binding my wrists to the loops on it. Fear grips me again. I remember my last moments at Red Valley and I begin to struggle.

Chase was far away. My father and my people can not help me now. I don't even know where I am—Immediately, my ears catch the sloshing sound of sea waves and breaking tides. The wheels in my head turn like fiery chariots. I'm currently at sea and my captors aren't planning on keeping me in Carodia. They are taking me out of it.

But it's not only my captors that I fear. It is the waters we cross now that make me antsy. I struggle until I'm wet with sweat and feel the little energy in my bones leave me.

"Do not fight it." I hear the low-pitched, deep voice as footsteps bound down the short stairs leading to where I am.

A man in a black coat and black boots stands before me in a matter of seconds. I notice the staff in his right hand and begin to wonder. The handle is shaped like a wolf's head and he bears it with authority, even though he's just a mere rogue looking for trouble.

"Who are you?" I narrow my eyes to black slits, but he still gives me that blank look.

It's the same face I saw before I was captured. This man was the one who had snuck into my room and stole me from my pack. I want to scream at him, but that would only show my fear and give him more footing over me. Besides, my father would do the opposite in this situation. He will always remain calm like the trees, and so will I.

"A high amount of wolf's bane is still in your system. I'm afraid the strength of your wolf cannot help you now."

I scoff. "I can say the same for you, rogue. You dare cross Carodia's most powerful packs and think you'll survive it?"

The man walks forward and I latch my gaze on his slightly limping leg. I'm certain he's a wolf; I can sense it, but that I do not understand. His shoulders are broad underneath that coat and everything about him looks hard.

As he stands before me, his presence is intimidating in spades. Thick brows narrow into a soft frown as green eyes peer at me. "Why not, Marelyn Everdeen?

"As we speak, the Red Valley pack is counting their losses in folds. My visit wouldn't be forgotten so easily."

I try to think he is bluffing, but I heard the screams and howls earlier. He is right, even I will never forget it.

"You are a rogue, nothing but a rogue. Listen, my alpha will come for you and he will destroy you."

"The same man that slept with your sister and got her pregnant?" It mutes me at once, and he pesters on with a mocking smile. "What makes you think your alpha will come after you, Marelyn?"

I rush the words out to quell the shame biting my spirit. "Because I'm his Luna and we have a duty—"

"I did Chase Erikson a great favour by getting you out of his way. With his only obstacle gone now, what do you think will happen next?"

My chin quivers as I hold his cold stare. This man doesn't care that his words hurt me. In fact, he wants them to cut through me like a double-edged sword and break me to pieces. He wants to hear me say the words with my mouth. Ruby will be my replacement and I'd be forgotten like the wind.

But I can't. I gulp and lower my gaze. "What do you want from me?"

"A child."

My eyes snap to him, and there's a storm brewing. It's the most ridiculous thing I've heard since my first breath, but then there's not the slightest bit of humour on his features. I've known this man for only a few minutes to know he does not joke.

"That's impossible. My mate bond is with another."

He finally moves away and my lungs can function properly again.

"The last thing I want is to be mated to anyone."

"How sad..." I mutter mockingly, but he doesn't pick on my action. He continues. "I know what you are, Marelyn, and as much as I do not need a mate, I must have an heir to the Moon Grove throne."

"Is that why I am in chains and being led to my death?"

"If this was what death looked like, then it wouldn't be such a horrible thing, don't you think?"

I pause and look around me. I find a window to my right and I get a glimpse of the deck. It's still night, but I can't determine the exact hour.

Again, I pin him with a narrowed stare. "First, you're crossing the Carodian seas after dark. That's a death wish. I know no Raven would do that. It means you're all on your own, in the middle of a dangerous territory, with a bunch of wolves that know nothing about sailing."

When the moon goddess created Carodia as our land, she had surrounded it with water and its monsters to ward off trespassers. The only problem was that it had trapped us in. We can't leave the territory without the wolves they call Ravens, who are trained in sailing and how to navigate these seas. Now this rogue thinks he can cross over all alone and survive.

"I got here just fine. I don't think leaving would be much of a problem." He sits himself on the sofa across from me and observes. I'm still in my battle clothes from the Red Valley armoury. His eyes take me in, but his appraisal is vague. I can't decipher the dark look on his face.

"Get me out of this and I might just save both our lives, together with your crew." I bargain, stretching my luck too far, but at this point, risks are all I can take.

He crosses his arms against his chest and raises a sharp brow. "How?"

"This is my home. You've lived on the outside all your life, rogue. Getting in might have been easy, but going out will not."

"Do you even know why you are in chains?"

"Because I'm a bloodline silver wolf." I pause, and the smile on my face is sinister. "And because you fear what I can do."

He regards me and smirks. It's the first time I'm witnessing genuine humour from him. This man is one of a kind.

"Well, I can't trust you to not kill all of my wolves, or can I?"

"You'll be the first if I ever have that intention, but then it's your lucky day, rogue. I care more about surviving this journey now."

It's like he can see through my bluff and see all the lies I've just told. I am a bloodline, but there's not much I can do because I'm yet to harness my powers, and this man knows that. Someone interrupts in the next second. I can tell he has summoned a wolf of his through a mind link.

"Zeke, you called."

He says, "Release her."

The order does not please the wolf, but his feet carry him to my side and within a minute, the chains fall off. My shoulders hurt as I rest my hands at my sides.

Shock still rolls off of me because I do not see it coming. He is letting me go for a reason I can't grasp yet.

"Marelyn promises to get us out of here safely. Let's see how she manages that, Jai." He doesn't break eye contact with me as he speaks and I sense the mockery in his tone because he doesn't think I can do it.

That irks me, and I willingly accept the challenge, even though I know he's right again.

Jai leads as we climb out to the deck. I can feel the heat of Zeke's body right behind me, and I'm second guessing my mental health because it is affecting me and my thinking cells greatly.

I manage as we walk. "You're right. My alpha and the Red Valley pack might abandon me, but my family will never. I'm also a Blue Silver wolf and in case you are not aware, we never abandon our own."

From behind, he whispers harshly in my ear. "Really? Because I'm not so sure your father thinks that way."

My heart sinks to my shoes and I snap my neck to him immediately, but Zeke is already headed for the helm of the yacht before I can set my gaze on him.

Zeke is gone. He disappears up the stairs and the beta brings me to a group settled on sofa sets lining the deck railings. I hear people laughing ahead. It's a party down there and I'm wondering why the rogue has gone in the opposite direction. As I walk, I take in my surroundings, gauging their numbers and trying to understand just what it would take for an escape. I am out of those horrible chains now and I'm not planning on returning. My eyes scan the endless blues around me. We are at sea, and I can tell just how far gone this sailing boat is. Daybreak is near. I can taste the impending sunset in the air. We've sailed for five hours, which means we've claimed half of the journey's worth. I know all of this because before the mark and before my destiny changed; I had taken an interest in Raven studies. "The name's Jai-Blynn." The beta officially introduces himself to me. He does so right before the group of five now focused on us. "Mar—" I start, thinking it is the right thing t

A pound of slimy flesh slaps down on the deck, and I dodge by a near miss. The boat rocks violently as the tentacles seize every corner. We are going down and the world around me goes blur. I can't find my strength. I'm losing blood just as the rogue had predicted and the worst part is I can't heal. The crew shifts into battle mode. Everyone's fangs and claws are out in defence, but my wolf is buried underneath the surface and weak. I struggle to crawl away from the edge and find safety as chaos plays out. I hear screams, but it's a fair fight. It reaches a point where I cannot even see what is ahead. Now I'm at the entrance to the deckhouse, steadying myself on the wall. Drusila yells from behind me and a hand reaches out suddenly and shoves me out of the way. I stumble and fall. There's a piercing pain in my head as my skull collides with the floor of the deck. It's stinging my ears too, and the world slows. The war around me finds its voice. I roll over onto my back, breathing he

Drusila comes many hours later, and she looks different. I do not know how long I've stayed in this dark room, but I survived. My wolf did not desert me as Jai-Blynn expected, and I can't wait to throw it in his face. The old lady opens the cage and sets me free. I was shivering with fear when she found me. The dark is somewhere I dislike, even with my wolf's vision because a part of my history is dark enough to suffice. Since I woke up here, Drusila is the only one who's shown me kindness, so I save the bite of my tongue for those who need it. The fabric of her clothes is different now. She's dressed in a finely cut purple maxi skirt and jacket. Her age doesn't deceive me as it did when I first saw her in that tunic and knee-length boots. "We've reached land." I strain my ears, but I do not hear birds chirping. "How long has it been?" I ask as she leads me through a narrow passage I'm not familiar with. "Fourteen hours." Drusila stops before a small door and turns to me. "You ca

"Leave us." His deep voice demands, and Drusila obeys. He walks past me after that and I don't know where my mind is, thinking he would've helped me up. I stand on my own and turn to him with my hands crossed over my chest. Zeke's staff is not with him, and you can only tell his need for one if only you look closely. He's dressed casually in a grey cotton jacket and a black button-down shirt and pants. His brown hair looks different and longer. It's curled at his nape. He says unexpectedly, "Must be nice being a bloodline silver wolf. You heal faster than we all do." I'm lost for a moment, then I access my body and sight the bruise on my ankle. It's clearing up like magic and in a second, it doesn't hurt anymore. I spare a tight-lipped smile. "Yes, but it must be nice as well. You're a waterlink. A legacy. Now that was a shocker." Zeke rolls his gaze over his feet, bobbing his head. He juts his chin as he says, "We need to talk." I avert my eyes, looking anywhere else but at him

After the plane ride, Drusila hands me a pair of sunglasses and I don't understand what they are for until we leave the airport. Throngs of people rush towards us in this cold late afternoon. They're all asking questions and flashing their cameras our way. The lights blind me even with the dark glasses covering my eyes, and no one but me seems affected by it. Jai-Blynn is in a single-breasted suit, leading Zeke ahead, who's also wearing shades. Drusila falls in step with me and I can tell this is a normal occurrence for all of them. Zeke suddenly stops at the hearing of a particular question. "Is the owner of Vanver studios willing to try again?" The lady repeats, holding out her mic. She's tall and classy in a black suit jacket and tailored pants. Zeke takes off his shades and doesn't even break a smile, but his expression is far from a grimace. "Only time will tell, Maggie," he says. They murmur at his vague answer. After Zeke throws the reporters off balance, he continues o

He holds out the dagger for me, and I eye it sceptically for a minute. He hangs his hand, waiting for me to see that my thoughts do not matter and regardless, I will still sign it as he has ordered. I take the dagger and cut my palm. Before it can heal up, I dip my thumb in the lump of blood that has formed over it. The torn skin heals immediately, just as I stamp my thumb on the spot Jai-Blynn shows me. It creates a gleaming silver mark in its wake. Zeke picks the seal and signs it off after me. The beta leaves us again, carrying the dagger with him. "What do you do?" I ask suddenly, cleaning off the smear of blood with a tissue. He says unconsciously, "I'm the people's favourite, Marelyn. I make films and star in them." "You must have enemies?" I don't know why that comes out next, but I'm genuinely curious to know what I am getting myself into. He said I've not even come close to seeing what his life looks like and I want to be sure it's not what I think it is. He checks the ti

I swear I hear her sniffle before she looks away. Drusila stands abruptly and changes the subject. "Enough of the past. It's late and dinner's getting cold. We've travelled for so long that I really miss my pillow." I smile faintly at that, but it's on a line between a grimace and a wince. I can't forget the horrible image painted in my head, and I'm afraid I'll look at Zeke differently from now on. But I mentally smack myself in the cheek. Trust isn't blind. I can't let empathy go against my better judgement. I inform her. "I'm not hungry, but I'll like to be alone now." Drusila looks like she doesn't approve of my response, but she doesn't scold me. She leaves quietly and closes the door behind her. I'm alone in my room now and my eyes feel heavy. I yawn and stretch my hands over my head. The dresser is far away but I must change out of these clothes, even though I'm exhausted. I walk over to the table and pull down the front zip of the jumpsuit. It's down halfway, giving off a

Jai-Blynn walks ahead, leading me to the house of the pack's doctor, Taz. I figured out who he was, and after dinner, Zeke sent me to him to begin everything. The beta who's always on my watch does his job by following me. It's dark outside and I'm rubbing my palm over my arm with slightly clattering teeth. "If it helps, I'm glad you survived." He starts and I'm shocked to see he wants to speak to me. "Sorry to disappoint...again." I sigh and mutter as the wind blows away strands of fallen hair from my face. "Again?" He looks over his shoulder, and I nod, even though he's turned back already and can't see me. "The Alpha's choice was not a favourite, if I remember correctly. She didn't fit the beta's type." I spit and wrap my arms around myself as we continue down the cobblestone walkway. Jai-Blynn smirks for a moment. "I've had time to reconsider." "And what has changed your mind?" I loosen the bun on my hair and let it drape over my shoulders to ward off the cold. He appears se

I'm standing at the window edge of a hallway in the fortress. Everyone that passes greets their Alpha with a bow. Today is the exertion of the verdict I passed over all those involved in my mother's death. I took her skull down from where it was hung and finally gave her a befitting burial. Chantria Van Acker, after being tried for my mother's death and King Nikolai's death, was sentenced to death. Her execution is today, and Zane doesn't try to stop it. I knew he went to see her one last time at the dungeons last night, but she's his mother. Will that ever be enough? Hours later, Aiden hands me a platter. I open it and find Chantrias head. The last thing I can do for my mother is to replace her skull with that of the person who put her there. I tell him where to leave the human head until it decomposes, and only a skull is left. My brother stops by to see me in my chambers that evening. He doesn't seem angry that I had given the order for her death. She had killed Father, too. It

ZEKE Again, fire and water will stand against each other. I don't know what the outcome of this fight will be. In my head, I know what I want, but I can't tell exactly what my brother is thinking. It was his idea to do this. I'm not so sure why I even agreed. Revenge doesn't matter anymore. Once I looked into my daughter's eyes, all the pain I felt melted away. I healed. Mare couldn't let go of me all through the night. She was stuck to me like glue because she feared this moment. She feared losing me. My life is finally coming together. I fear losing it, too. The arena roars wild. The entire wolf lands are watching King Nikolai's sons make history. I'm already a record breaker, and he's their king. This fight will have them all at the edge of their seats. The gong goes off and shirtless as we are, dressed in nothing but shorts we fight to the death. I cast an illusion of a cloud over his head, and constant rain falls on only him in the arena. KYRA I'm storming into his chambers in Moon Wood's fortress. I just learnt the news of a battle between legacies. There are only two legacies I know apart from evil Jai-Blynn. All of Carodia believes the king has gone mad for wanting to fight his brother, who took down an entire pack and turned them to dust. Zeke Van Acker has gained a name for himself in the city, but that is still far from my point. How could he do this to me? We talked the second our boat arrived at the harbour. Actually, we did less talking and more physical activities for the first few hours after meeting again. I was so sure Marelyn and I made the right choice after spending time with him again. My wolf couldn't stop pining for him, but it seems I'm the only one who felt that way. How could he do this us? Zane says after I barge in, "I know you are angry. Kyra, calm down—I can't believe they just let you walk through easily." "It's not news to anyone, including your other mates, that we are together, Zane.

"That child and I can't exist at the same time on this earth, Mare." "Why, Jai?" I frown, calculating the distance with my eyes. I make a jump for it and shield Kinna from his attack with my body. Summoning my powers, I struggle to get a hold of his mind, but the calibre of power coming out of him is not to be underestimated. Now I realise he wasn't kidding back then in that warehouse. "Your little bloodline powers won't work on me. But Mare, you are no longer my concern. Give me your champion, and you can walk away from this alive." I'm shocked that he's willing to bargain. There's something he knows that none of us do. Something that makes this moment more important to him than ever. I scream hard. "Never!" The force of my voice hits him, but he only staggers back by a step, and I had really mustered up strength with that move. How powerful is he really? "Angering me will only make the terms worse, Marelyn!" "You can kill me, but not my child, Jai. I will never let you touc

ZEKE A Day Earlier... I'm standing in front of the mirror, feeling for my now thick beards. It's a new look I've been sporting. Just yesterday, the action series I starred in aired, and the viewing ratings were through the roof. It's a hit. I've always had blockbusters where I starred as the villain, but never have I been portrayed from a protagonist's point of view in one of them. It's unreal. What's also unreal is what tomorrow is. I know Marelyn is due tomorrow. My chest tightens like every other time I've stared at the date or thought about it. I've been distant. I never showed up for our daughter, but it all got to a point where I considered myself unworthy of being in their lives. She may be happy in Carodia with her date from before. Maybe it fleshed into something more. I can't tell, but it's been bugging me at the back of my mind for months. Scarlett helped me understand what those random slip-ups meant over time. Everything is clear to me now. I stare at my reflection

I don't realise that the doorknob has come off. I stare at the piece in my hand. It broke off, but my mind is fixed on their conversation. She's dating now. It's been just two weeks, and she promised that wasn't goodbye. My jaw clenches impossibly in anger. Finding a new path. Bullshit! I block out their voices and lock myself in my study. I throw my head back over the headrest of the desk chair, blowing out my cheeks. So far, the day has been terrible. I'm nervous. I want to storm into Carodia the next second and restructure the idiot fling's face. She's mine. She's fucking mine! The broken doorknob sits on my desk because I don't know what to do with it yet. Suddenly, my mind is made up. I stand on my feet and head to my bedroom. I open my suitcase on my bed, swiping clothes off the rack in the walk-in closet and dropping them inside it. It's easy not to overthink it. But soon, there's a knock on the open door, calling my attention. Scarlett is holding the broken doorknob, eyein

I've been showing up for appointments with the pack doctor at Blue Silver for the past two weeks since I arrived. He's not who I used to know, and his name is Xavier Scythe. When Ava refused to take me in because of our last encounter, Xavier showed Kyra and I a roof over our head. He is also the next catch as Kyra put it. She wants me to take on his advances and use him to forget all about Zeke. I try. I actually put in effort. He knocks at my door and I open it with a bright smile on my face. "Xavier, how are you?" His hands are locked behind him as he says, "I'm good. How are you?" Xavier runs a nervous hand over his sleeked back long black hair. It's tied up because of how impressively long his hair is. Xavier is a real catch. He's tall and looks hard all over, like a man should, but I don't get that spark from looking at him or anyone else that's not Zeke. Maybe Kyra is right. My world does revolve around only him. "The Blue Silver carnival is coming up. Would you like a p

Scarlett lost her wolf. She's like a human, so I guess that's why we are all concerned because she can't heal. Kyra says, "How can she do this? Overdosing because she wants attention. Jeez." "We don't know that." Drusila chips in from across the waiting room. We are the only ones here at the moment, but it's a hospital people can arrive at any time. Unfortunately, Kyra seems pissed about spending her night here. Zeke is with the doctor. "I'm going to grab a snack." I stand on my feet without glancing at any of them. They still remember how I just cried my eyes out because Zeke made his choice. Now I'm sitting here watching him care for someone else like I wish was only just for me. It's still pure torture. ************************** My eyes crack open. Daylight shines into my room, but I'm still stuck in last night's pack gathering. Zeke wanted a son who would challenge Zane's throne. A female Alpha will never be accepted to lead Carodia. I'm sad for other reasons than Scarlett. My happy ending keeps drifting far and far away. I wonder if he's angry with me. If this will change everything. Maybe he will finally realise that he won't gain anything from me because I can't even give him a proper heir. I will love our daughter with everything in me because she's a product of our great love. I take a shower, anxious about joining the rest downstairs. Will they see me as a failure? I couldn't protect the first heir, and now I've given them a child they can't accept. A while later, I cross Kyra and Aiden in the hallway, just above the stairs.
