Sylvia

I went numb with shock as he pulled me from the SUV then led me across the dark tarmac to the waiting plane.

I had lost my willpower to do anything so I did not resist. I allowed him to pull me like I was his puppet.

His revelation of Arnold having a wife broke me. I was trying hard not to believe his words but at the same time I wanted to believe.

But why?

Was it because I didn't love him?

What if he was just trying to tarnish Arnold's image so he could have me to himself?

Several thoughts ran through my weak mind as he continued to pull me.

“But he can’t have a wife,” I said aloud. I didn't mean to but I had already said it.

I looked up at him with bewildered confusion in my eyes.

He was wearing a neutral expression so it was hard for me to detect if he was trying to pull my legs or he meant his words.

“I’m Arnold’s wife! You’re lying just to kidnap me.” I spat at him

“The wedding was fake,” he said coldly.

“The vows were fake. The minister was fake. And most of all, Miss Browne…” he glanced down at me with glittering dark eyes as we reached the bottom of the steps

“...you are fake.” he added

I was stunned by his utterance but it came to an abrupt end when he pushed me up the stairs into the cabin of the plane.

Inside the plane, we were greeted by two flight attendants, the captain and a co pilot.

It wasn't long before bodyguards began to pour in behind us.

As if planned beforehand, they all disappeared into the back of the jet.

When all the bodyguards had entered the jet, the captain gave him a respectful nod and said, “We are ready for takeoff at your order, sir.”

A brunette flight attendant took his coat, while the other one, a redhead, greeted him with a silver tray which held drinks.

The cabin door closed behind us with a loud bang the moment the flight attendants left.

“Thank you.” Taking a glass of champagne from the tray, he sat down on a white leather seat in the front cabin of the jet.

Hee turned carelessly back to me. “Champagne, Miss Browne? No?”

When I just stared at him in shock without replying, he gave me a small, private smile and nodded at the captain. “Captain, you may proceed.”

The captain and co pilot disappeared to the front of the cabin to complete their takeoff preparations while the flight attendants left for the back of the plane.

Left alone with me in the front cabin, Xavier stretched out his arm on the back of the white leather seat.

As he took a sip of his champagne, he seemed relaxed. His body language was a full indication that he was content with himself.

I stared at the crystal glass in his large, rough hand.

Just an hour ago, I myself had been sipping champagne in the gilded ballroom of my husband’s castle at my gorgeous wedding reception.

I remembered clearly when Arnold had looked up and smiled at me across the crowd, just like he always did.

Was it possible it had all been a lie?

Was it true he was already married and had decided to play with my feelings?

A crack of pain went through my heart.

No, It can’t be true.

It couldn’t be, I just can't bring myself to believe it.

The Arnold I was familiar with was too good for that.

“You’re wrong about Arnold. He is the sweetest and kindest man I have ever met,” I choked on my words

“He wouldn’t have done this awful thing you’re accusing him of…” I was still saying when he interrupted me

“Bigamy.”

I flinched.

“Don’t use that horrible word again! Arnold is innocent.” I defended

I couldn't believe I was defending a man I didn't love.

“You’re right,” he said coolly.

He finished off his glass of champagne and set it down.

“It wasn’t bigamy because his wedding to you was a sham from start to finish. He only married you to cover his lies.” he said without looking in my direction rather he was staring straight ahead.

“You’re wrong! He loves me and you’re just a bitter soul who has had no one to love. That’s why you would abduct me at my own wedding.”

My chest was heaving up and down. I could feel the fabric of my gown getting loose but I was done caring.

After what seems like forever, he turned toe with a smile etched on his lips. It didn't take long before the smile disappeared and was replaced with a neutral expression.

“Did you ever sign any paperwork? Did you ever go through court proceedings? Or did he just shove you to a wedding alter and uttered sweet romantic words to you??”

I sucked in my breath as I realized for the first time that I had never signed any papers.

No marriage license.

No forms.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing!

My lips trembled and my legs, which were tired from standing for too long, began to shake as they threatened to give away.

He was watching me like I was some sort of a comedian.

“Arnold hasn’t visited Northern California for years. None of his friends here know about his first marriage. He hid it from everyone because he had ulterior motives. But the minister who conducted your ceremony was an out-of-work actor from Vegas. He is not even a real minister. Everything from your wedding was fake.” he said with an edge in his tone.

With the way he spoke, I was starting to believe all he was saying but at the same time, I wanted to defend my husband.

“No,” I said automatically. “It can’t be true.”

I remembered the minister had been strangely young and handsome.

It was rare and almost impossible to see a young man as a minister. They tend to enjoy their youthful age before going into ministry.

Back there at the church, I had been so nervous, almost sick, as I stood in the ruined shell of the ancient stone church and waited to speak my vows.

I had shrugged off the minister’s soap-opera-star good looks with the thought that all my husband’s friend’s or associates must be as blond and handsome just like him.

But was it possible that what Xavier Regulus was telling me held some shred of truth?

No!

I shook my head fiercely.

“Arnold wouldn’t have pursued me if he were already married. He wouldn’t have even noticed me pouring his coffee in San Francisco!” I said

“He wouldn’t?” I could detect sarcasm dripping from his tone.

“No! He wouldn’t! Marriage lasts forever. It is the friendship and passion that lasts your whole life. Loyalty and love are the foundation of everything!” I rapped

He stared at me amusingly. “And where did you hear that, princess?”

“I didn’t have to hear it from anyone,” I snapped. “My parents have been married for nearly forty years. My grandparents were married for sixty before my granddad died. All my brothers and sisters are married except for one. All married. Happily. Forever.”

Xavier looked at me for a long time before he pressed the intercom.

It didn't take long before one of the flight attendants walked up to us.

When she got to his side, he turned to her as he pushed the empty champagne glass back into her hands.

His voice was almost sounding like a whisper as he said, “Scotch. Rocks.”

She nodded to disappear behind the door to do as she was asked.

As she left, he turned back to me. “I can see marriage means a great deal to you. I can see that you really do love the title of baroness. To have people worship you and do your daily biddings.” He gave a hard look at the ostentatious diamond on my left hand.

When I discovered what he was staring at, I withdrew my hands and placed them behind my back.

“So much that you didn’t mind speaking a few false vows in order to get your hands on that. That you didn’t mind marrying such a terrible man for it.”

Xavier's words were piercing my heart like swords. He didn't care about my emotions, all he cared about was how to make me feel bad for my wrong decision.

He thought I cared about this huge diamond ring?

I clasped my hands which were behind me together tightly.

I didn’t care about jewelry, only what it symbolized!

“You think I would have let Arnold even flirt with me if I had known he was married? Never! I had no idea that he was married. I always believed in true love and I don’t care about money. If I wanted to get married for money, I would have done so a long time ago.” I said in a bid to oppose his words and whatever it was that was spurring him to speak.

“Everything is for sale in this world. Everyone has a price. And clearly…” he looked at me with scorn.

With my hands placed before me, his eyes wandered from my ring to my designer wedding gown.

“...that was yours.”

“The lace was hand-stitched by nuns in France,” Arnold had told me proudly when he had presented it to me.

He had laughed at my desire to wear my mother’s simple 1960s-era wedding gown to a simple ceremony in my California hometown.

“I will plan everything, petal. All you will need to do is be beautiful…and be ready for our honeymoon!” he said this too

Shaking the memory from my mind, I took a steadying breath.

“You’re wrong,” I said. “Either you’ve made a mistake, or…or…”

Or you’re lying, I wanted to say, but didn’t have the courage because I was faced with his wrathful gaze.

Rising to his feet, my captor crossed two steps to me.

His eyes were like black fire. He towered over me, and I had to force myself not to cower, but to stand straight and tall.

I had to stand my ground, I can't let him intimidate me.

“Arnold has no money of his own. His money comes from his wife’s inheritance, from her wealthy mother.” His lips twisted as he scornfully touched the exquisite lace of my sleeve.

“That’s her money you’re wearing on your back right now.” he added

My lips broke into a smile then a frown at his words.

My facial expression continued to switch from smile to frown for a while before it settled for a frown.

If looks could kill, Xavier was certain to be six feet below the ground because of the intensity of my stares. I was still trying to wrap my head around the words he had been saying. “I don’t believe you. You’re lying about everything.” I said “Keep on telling yourself that, princess. Deep down, you know I am telling the truth but your greedy heart won’t let you admit it.” he replied with a calm voice which irked me “If any of this were true, if he were as bad as you say, why wouldn’t his wife just divorce him?” I asked. “Why would she let him treat her cruelly by marrying another wife? Why would she let him use her money to plan a wedding for another woman?” Xavier looked away. His expression became hard as he clenched his jaw. “She can’t.” came the short reply for my numerous questions. “Why?” I asked. I needed to know more. Narrowing his eyes, he looked at me. “They were in an accident. She’s in a coma. Not that you would care. She has been in a coma for months now. Arnold i

Xavier “You are a liar!” Young Laila had gripped the gilded arms of her chair as she stared at me in her family’s mansion with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. She had returned home from boarding school after her father’s death to support her fragile mother, who had collapsed at his funeral. “No!” Laila had jumped to her feet at my news. Her hands flew to her ears as she backed away. “You’re a liar! Get out of my house! Never come back!” she yelled at me I blinked. Liar; this was the same accusation but from different women. I stared now at the young blonde who stood before me in the cabin of my private jet. Sylvia Browne was magnificent. A little too thin, perhaps, but it was hard to notice that when her full breasts swelled up against the bodice with every angry breath she took. Her waist was tiny, the perfect span for a man’s hands. Her honey-blonde hair fell back in waves as she tossed her head, her chin had now completely collapsed, exposing her swan-like throat. Her

His lips were hard and hot against hers, overwhelming Sylvia’s senses in a ruthless assault. She stiffened pressing her hands instinctively against his chest. He thought it was a go ahead for him since he didn't resist so he leaned her back then deepened the kiss, forcibly pressing her lips apart. As he plundered her mouth with his tongue, she felt a shock of sudden pleasure so sharp and raw that she gasped. She haven't encountered this before so it was a whole new experience for her. As his lips moved against hers, forcing her to respond, she was swept beneath the waves of sensation. He held her tightly and she felt the world swirl and twist around them making her get lost in a spinning current of desire she had never experienced before. She tasted the sweetness of his breath, the taste of Scotch on his tongue. She felt the roughness of his jaw against her skin, the heat of him against her body. Overpowered by her captor’s strength and the intensity of his commanding embrace,

Curled up in the chair, she imagined progressively more painful punishments for her kidnapper. It was in this state that the invisible hand of sleep drew her into the enjoyable dreams. She was practically enjoying her dreams when she felt a hand shaking her roughly. At first she thought it was a dream but when the shake became consistent, her eyes flew open. Disoriented, she sat up as she rubbed her sleepy eyes. She hasn't had enough sleep and she wouldn't mind returning to the comfort of the comfy bed. When she became conscious, she saw Xavier standing beside the bed. She looked at him before taking her eyes from his direction. Looking through the little window, she saw the plane had landed. Outside, the night was still dark but she was able to see a small, desolate airstrip by the sea. There were no flashing lights, no policemen too. None of the things she imagined would happen happened. She was still alone with Xavier and no help was coming. She even doubted if a miracle

For the remaining part of the journey to his home, no one said a word. Each was lost in their world as they stared out of the window. Sylvia ran her life right from childhood down to the present day right in her head. Things were not really good but now when she thought everything was going to fall into place, the devil sent his most trusted agent to haunt her. From the corner of her eyes, she could see Xavier rubbing his rough chin while looking out of the window. She scoffed as she slid through the seat to make herself more comfortable. Slowly her eyelids began to close because of exhaustion. Also, the cold breeze which was cascading her skin didn't help matter. But as she was about to fully delve into the world of dream, the roaring engine ceased. With a grunt of disappointment, she sat up then began to rub her sleepy eyes. The driver stepped out then went around to open the door for Xavier. He climbed out then held out his hand towards Sylvia to help her out. Instead of t

AFTER he ended the call, the library was silent. Sylvia heard only low, soft snuffles that she realized were her own sobs. Her captor stood over her, and she felt his silent, considering gaze upon her. She tried to stifle her weeping but could not.All she could think about was that Xavier had been right. Arnold had betrayed her. Tricked her. He’d used her own idealistic nature, her belief in loyalty and love, against her. He’d never loved Sylvia at all. He’d only wanted her body. He was already married, and he’d been waiting…waiting for…“He’s waiting for his wife to die,” she whispered aloud. She felt Xavier touch her arm. “I know.”She looked up. His dark eyes were surprisingly gentle.“Come,” he said in a low voice. “You’ve had a rough day. I’ll take you to bed.”She was unable to resist as he took her hand in his larger one, lifting her to her feet. Sylvia hesitated outside the closed doors of the huge, flower-strewn library, frightened out of her mind. She could hear the rumble on the other side of door, the mutters and whispers. The wedding had been scheduled to start thirty minutes ago, and everyone was obviously starting to assume the worst. But there was no way around it. She had to get through it. With a deep breath, she pushed the doors open. The enormous two-story library had been modeled after an old English abbey with walls of gray stone. It was now festooned with white roses and candles, with hundreds of chairs set up to create an aisle down the middle. At the sight of the bride standing at the end of the aisle, musicians hastily began to play ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring’ on guitars and violins. Sylvia stopped the music with a chopping gesture across her neck.Silence fell. She could have heard a pin drop as three hundred pairs of eyes turned to her.She trembled, passing a hand over her eyes. Then she heard her baby

Xavier had to hurry. Every second he wasted with Sylvia was like a grain of sand falling through a fatal hourglass. He had to leave at once. And yet he couldn’t.Leaving her felt like a death. He took a deep, shuddering breath. ‘This isn’t over,’ he said hoarsely. ‘I’ll be back after I close the deal in Rio.’‘Of course.’ Sylvia’s shoulders straightened, even as her lower lip trembled. ‘I will never stop you from seeing Robby. I hope…I hope you’ll see him often. He needs his father.’Xavier heard the music start to play downstairs and thought of the guests surrounded by white roses and candlelight, waiting for the wedding ceremony to begin. He clenched his hands, feeling that same strange spinning, sinking feeling in the region of his chest.‘Remember,’ he said tersely, looking at her. ‘This was your choice. I wanted to marry you.’She swallowed as tears streamed unchecked down her pale cheeks. ‘I’ll never forget that.’No, he thought suddenly. It couldn’t end like this. Not like this!

Two weeks later, Sylvia stared at herself blankly in the mirror. An elegantly dressed bride in a long, white lace veil and satin sheath gown stared back at her. It still didn’t feel right. She picked up her neatly bundled bouquet of white roses and looked back in the mirror. It was the morning of her wedding. In less than an hour she would have everything she’d barely dared to dream of—she’d be Mrs. Xavier Regulus. Robby would have his father. So where was the joy? She should have been ecstatic with bliss and hope. So why, looking at herself in this beautiful dress, standing in a suite of this beautiful rented mansion outside her village, did she feel so…empty?Xavier had wanted to marry her immediately, in Rio, but he’d quickly given in to Sylvia’s begging when she’d asked to have their wedding in New Hampshire, so her family could attend.‘We can get married in New Hampshire, of course we can, if that’s your wish,’ he’d told her. ‘But after the ceremony, we must live in Rio. Sylvia woke up with a start to see the soft curl of a pink sunrise through the windows. She sat up in bed abruptly, the blanket falling from her naked chest. Had she heard her baby next door? She listened, and heard nothing except Xavier’s even, steady breathing beside her in the shadowy bedroom. Then she heard Robby’s voice again.‘Ma…ma…ma!’Quietly Sylvia rose from the bed and pulled a robe off the bathroom door hook. Leaving Xavier’s room, she went down the hall to her own, where she found her baby son sitting up in his crib. Whispering soft words of love, Sylvia took him in her arms. Holding him tenderly, she fed him, rocking him in the rocking chair. The baby, now yawning with a full belly, swiftly fell back to sleep. But Sylvia knew she would not.Putting him back in his crib, she went to the en-suite bathroom, closing the door silently behind her. She turned on the shower and dropped the robe to the floor. As the steam enveloped her body, she climbed into the marble shower. Sh

By the time they arrived back in Rio two hours later, one thought kept repeating in Xavier’s mind. One thought over and over.‘Here,’ he said to her, covering her shoulders with his tuxedo jacket as they entered the lobby of his building. She threw him a grateful glance. Her red designer gown now hung askew on her body, the zipper broken from when he’d ripped the dress off her earlier. As they passed the security guards, Xavier glanced at them out of the corner of his eye. His white shirt was rumpled, the cuffs hanging open, his tie crumpled in the pocket of his trousers. Sylvia was looking at him breathlessly, her eyes luminescent, her makeup hopelessly smudged and her lips full and bruised. He saw the security guards nudge each other with a smirk, and he knew he and Sylvia had fooled no one. There could be no doubt what they had been doing.Normally he wouldn’t care if people knew he’d taken a woman as his lover. But this was different. This was Sylvia. And one thought kept going th
