Chapter 3

Author: Pork Chops
Yvonne laughed in delight. Then, she opened the metal box I had used to keep the mementos of the love between me and Charles.

She took out all of the letters, as well as the train ticket stubs that I had kept from the times I traveled to see him back when we were still in a long-distance relationship, and tore them all apart.

Each time she ripped up a piece of paper, she looked up at Charles and smiled gleefully.

She even handed him one, inviting him to join in the destruction.

Charles did not refuse. He happily obliged.

Together, they shredded ten years' worth of my love. Every action was like a stab through my heart.

The last thing they tore apart was a photograph of Charles and me. After graduating from university, we went for a cheap photo shoot. It was cheap, but we had to save money from our part-time jobs to pay for it.

At the time, he looked at me like I was his whole world—at least, that was what I believed.

That was why I had never thought of throwing it away all these years, even though the photo was rather bad.

But Yvonne ripped it into pieces and stomped repeatedly on my half of the photo.

"I don't understand why she would keep this. She's so ugly in this photo!" Saying that, she took out a phone and took a selfie with Charles. "My casual selfies look better than hers!"

Charles just looked at her and smiled adoringly. "That's because you're beautiful."

They wrapped themselves around each other, uncaring of the wedding photo right beside them.

Just as I was staring at the screen, a cold voice sounded. "Miss your husband so much that you have to watch him through the surveillance cameras while you're hospitalized?"

Only one person could say something so sharp and sarcastic.

I looked up and met Hadrian Cenard's eyes.

He checked me over with a stethoscope and said, "You'll be able to leave the hospital after about two weeks."

I stared at him, baffled. I thought he was supposed to be doing advanced research at the university. Why was he here?

"You… You…" I stammered, unable to form a complete sentence.

He gave me an exasperated look. "I wasn't aware that post-kidney transplant complications included stuttering. If this is a new symptom, let me know so I can write a paper on it. After all, I rushed back here to perform your surgery."

"Huh?"

"Huh?" he mimicked mockingly. "It's not out of the kindness of my heart, naturally. The dean offered me some really generous terms. Don't flatter yourself."

Tossing his head proudly, he left the room.

Just then, my phone buzzed, notifying me about a large transaction that had just been performed with my bank account in the amount of 5,200 dollars.

On the screen, Yvonne glanced at her phone, saw the transfer, and began showering Charles with kisses.

They acted like I was already dead.

Charles sent her another 5,200 dollars.

That amounted to over 10,000 dollars.

Had Charles forgotten about our prenup agreement?

It clearly stated that even after marriage, our finances would remain separate.

The card he used belonged to me. I had only let him use it because I wanted him to eat well and take care of himself while he worked so hard on his research. After all, I earned more than he did at the pharmaceutical company.

I hadn't given him this card so that he could cheat on me.

Besides, I owned the house we lived in. He had no right to let someone else live there without my permission.

I turned off the surveillance footage and made a call. "Hello, is this the police? I would like to report a case. Someone used my bank card fraudulently and broke into my house."

Not long after I hung up my call with the police, Charles came to demand answers.Over the last few days, he had been telling the hospital that he didn't have time to visit me or come to work. He said he needed rest, but now, it seemed like he had managed to find some free time after all.In fact, he didn't even have the time to put on his usual facade. He barged into my hospital room wearing only slippers and pajamas."What do you mean by this?" he demanded, jabbing his finger hard against my forehead. "I texted you and told you that I was helping Yvonne with her thesis at home. Why did you call the police?"I pushed his hand away. The distress on his expression looked ridiculous. While I was actively dying, he was busy vacationing in another city and enjoying the beautiful scenery with Yvonne. He hadn't shown any concern to me at all, even going so far as to block me on social media. But now, just because Yvonne had been taken away by the police for questioning, he was panic

Before Charles could answer, several of his colleagues, drawn by the commotion, came over and pulled him away.I even heard them reprimanding him, but Charles just retorted self-righteously, "I know her case is complicated, but we can't deny new doctors the chance to gain experience. It's all part of the teaching process. I can't help it either!"One of the doctors said, "I don't see you putting as much effort into the other PhD students you're mentoring. How could you let a student practice on such an important case? The patient is your own wife! If you're really that generous, let's see you make the same choice next time. Maybe then we'll stop questioning you!"Charles stormed off without answering.Hadrian grabbed my arm and reinserted the IV, deliberately jabbing a little harder than necessary.I frowned but didn't make any sound. When he saw my frown, his movements quickly softened. It hadn't hurt that much, really."I can't believe you rejected me for that asshole. When Yvonne lunged at me and grabbed my phone, it happened to play the part where she and Charles were hugging and kissing each other.I had been playing the video on mute to leave them a shred of dignity, but in Yvonne's haste to snatch the phone, she accidentally turned on the sound. The sounds that played from the video were incredibly inappropriate to the point of unbearable. When Yvonne heard it, she lost it. She burst into tears and flung herself at Charles.Charles took the phone and took a look himself. His hands shook. "Rachel, when did you install surveillance cameras in the house? Why didn't I know about this?""Because it's my house. You moved in later. It came with surveillance cameras," I told him.Charles had nothing to say to that. Back when we first got married, he was the one who refused to buy a house himself, saying that we could just live in the one my parents had left me when they died.I agreed to it, and I even used my own money to renovate the house.Th

I didn't know what Charles and Yvonne spoke about in the corridor, but it turned out that Charles asked Yvonne to apologize to me. When she came back in, she was holding several bags of stuff. She placed them in front of me. "I'm sorry about what happened in the past, Rachel. Please accept my most sincere apologies."Then, she quickly added, "But I've used your case as an example in my thesis. Charles has already spoken to the hospital, and I will be credited as the lead surgeon in your surgery. You'll need to sign off on that. Could you… just turn a blind eye this once?"It was still all about her own interests. When our eyes met, her gaze flickered uneasily."No."As soon as the word escaped my mouth, Yvonne suddenly dropped to her knees. This entire thing felt so ridiculous to me.On her knees, she began crying. "I worked so hard to get to where I am now, Rachel. You know how hard it is to get a PhD in medicine. I'm just one step away. Please help me. I'm begging you!"Char

Yvonne had the audacity to upload an intimate photo of her and Charles right before apologizing to me.She had put on a good show, acting remorseful when she came to me.Gathering evidence and reporting her and Charles the moment I woke up was the smartest decision I had ever made. The fried chicken tasted so much better after watching them being taken away for investigation. After I finished eating, Hadrian said with a smile, "You're recovering well. You just have to take extra care of yourself from now on."I nodded."Did you report them?" he asked."Yeah. They almost killed me. Of course, I reported them."Hadrian tidied up his things quietly for a moment, deep in thought. Then, he asked, "What's your plan with Charles now?""Divorce. I've filed the papers already."He looked at me in surprise. He was probably shocked that I would initiate divorce, given my past history of being hopelessly infatuated with Charles."Are you sure? Have you thought this through?"I nodded

Slowly, I tilted my hand. The bracelet slipped off my wrist and fell to the ground with a clang, the sound a mockery of all the years of our relationship.Charles froze for a moment before picking it up. With a laugh, he said, "You've been sick for years. Of course, you've lost weight. I should've thought of that.""No, you didn't think of that. You just made a random guess before buying it," I said.Charles refused to admit that.He continued reminiscing about our past, trying to paint a picture of how great things once were between us."When we first got together, we were separated in different cities. You kept coming to visit me," he said.He reached for something, as if trying to show me some evidence of this, but froze instead when he remembered something.I laughed at his flustered expression. I raised my hand. The delivery man approached. The bouquet was huge, so he was drenched in sweat from the effort of just carrying it.He smiled. "A gentleman sent these to you. He said he's currently busy with surgery, so he can't pick you up in person. These 99 roses are his message to you. He asked you to let him know your decision."There was no signature on the card, but I knew who had sent them.Charles and Yvonne, seeing this, assumed that this was all an act that I had staged myself.Yvonne laughed out loud. "I hope you didn't pay this guy to deliver you some flowers just because you heard that Charles and I got engaged, Rachel. Did you buy these roses for yourself?"Charles laughed as well. "Are you really that desperate for love? It must have been painful for you to get a divorce from me!"I smiled serenely at him. "It was painful enough being married to you. For the record, I don't regret it one bit. The both of you had better stay together forever. Don't hurt anyone e

I finally found a suitable kidney donor, but something happened right before I was scheduled to get the transplant. My condition perfectly matched the case my husband's first love, Yvonne Sullivan, was writing about in her thesis, so my husband, Charles Gunner, refused to perform the surgery himself and insisted on handing me over to her for practice."Yvonne's the surgeon on paper, but I'll be present to ensure that nothing goes wrong. What are you so worried about?" he said impatiently when I refused to sign the consent papers.Ignoring my frail state, he grabbed my jaw so forcefully that I could hear my bones creak."I'm scared of dying!" I said. "You know better than anyone how complicated my case is. Yvonne has just graduated. How could she be able to do this well?"Yvonne heard what I said and ran out of the room crying.Charles jabbed his finger at me. "Then don't do the surgery and just wait to die. You ungrateful thing—I don't even know what to say to you."Then, he ran

The first thing I heard when I woke up was that chilling conversation. All the blood in my body seemed to freeze in that instant. The man standing before me seemed like a stranger.Though I had been woken up midway, my mind remained groggy. I could hear Charles coaching Yvonne through the surgery, but his words were vague and unclear, like fragments of a dream.Eventually, I woke up fully. I stared at the white ceiling. No one was around. It wasn't until the machines beside me started beeping that a group of people rushed in."What's going on? Why are the patient's vitals deteriorating after the surgery?""Exactly! Her blood oxygen is plummeting. What's going on? Where's her doctor?"Everyone exchanged uneasy glances before someone piped up. "Dr. Gunner left with Dr. Sullivan after the surgery to celebrate her success. He's on leave and won't be back for two days.""His patient just came out of surgery! She should be under close observation now. How could he go on leave now?
