CHAPTER ONE
The aroma coming from the brewed coffee was always been my wake-up call. Each morning, my Mother, Samantha, would prepare coffee and bread on the table for the three of us. It was an unbreakable morning routine for everyone.
Mother's passion in baking started when I was five. Besides taking care of me, she had nothing to do that would make her busy. Afterwards, she started to run a bakery business. The store was just beside our home. It was a source of income and a hobby for her.
At five o'clock in the morning, she would get up from bed to make breakfast. At six, she would open her store. Her breads were loved by our neighbors, especially those widower and unmarried men of her age. Mother was a beauty. Her elegance was always been overflowing just like a royalty. She moved in a smooth and attractive way, starting from the way she poured the hot coffee to our mugs, from the way she sipped her coffee and pinched and bite her sliced bread. It was like watching a film on how to eat gracefully like a queen. I loved how calm she speaks and how gentle she rejects her suitors. Her beauty could still captivate a man's heart even at the age of 56. She would blush because of a sudden confession and it was lovely and cute.
"Good morning, Mother. Good morning, Aunt Agatha." I was still in my doorway doing a stretch when the both of them greeted me with smiles
“Happy birthday, Amara.” Aunt Agatha was carrying a cake and the candle at its center was saying nineteen. It was a chocolate cake with cherries on the sides.
Aunt Agatha was younger than Mother by a year. She was a parent to me. I learned everything about a woman's task inside the house from her. She was a great teacher and a friend to Mother. She took care of us, always.
“Happy 18th birthday. You’re finally a lady.” Mother whispered and they both chuckled.
Today’s my birthday. I am supposed to be eighteen but my mother wanted me to be nineteen. This secret was about the event that happened nineteen years ago.
When I was about twelve, real twelve, Mother and Aunt Agatha explained to me why I must be a year older than my real age.
An Empire called Calla Empire was where my parents used to live. Life there was ruled by laws and orders which were implemented by the Royal Family, which was headed by a King and a Queen. It was for the peace and order.
The Royal Family lived in a Palace, which was according to my Mother, was the most beautiful place in Calla Empire. It was situated in the uppermost area of the land, where you could see the whole hectares of the empire up there, and there in the lower area was where the people lived. At the back of the palace was a forest. Royal members would hunt birds there as their pastime.
The palace was guarded with hundreds and even thousands of royal guards just to protect the royal family and the power that they had.
When a prophecy appeared in the dream of the empire’s old Augur, the whole empire went up-side-down. The prophecy said that a baby girl will be born and she was mated to be the bride of the Goblin. The bride will bring back the Goblin and they will become the rulers.
My mother was carrying me in her womb that time. Mothers who were pregnant were forced to abort their babies and those who didn’t follow were killed. Luckily, my mother and Aunt Agatha escaped the empire before it was too late. She started to labor while in the run. Mother said that it was the most painful physical pain that she ever felt in her entire life but she had to bear it for us to live. They were even more frightened when her bag of water burst.
The next day after that night of fear, Mother brought me to the world. I was born in the middle of nowhere. They traveled for months before they finally found a community of people in the woods. No one knew then about my real age except from the three of us.
“Go on, my niece. Blow your candle and make your wish.” It took me a second or two before I blew the candle, and wished for a happy life with my family.
Making a wish around this age was not as complicated as before. In my past birthdays, it would take me many seconds to think of a wish and blow my candle. It was always been about my dream to see an elf, a fairy, a witch or to meet a real princess and prince. My childhood was mostly about magic and fantasies. I loved hearing stories about fairytales, mythical creatures and magic. It was a fascinating moment as a kid. Ka Linda was my favorite story teller. She was more on the past experiences of her grandmother with different creatures, who lived years years ago. She was the one who introduced to me the word Goblin.
"When my grandmother saw one, she was hypnotized by its beauty. She even told us how she fell in love with the Goblin when she first saw it. It was a very good-looking man who hides his face under a mask." said by Ka Linda when I was fifteen. Her stories didn’t leave my mind as I grew old. That time, I wished to see one. I wanted to experience the feeling of being hypnotized by the sight of the Goblin’s face. I didn’t know but it gave me chills down to my spine and my heart would beat faster than its usual rate because of that thought.
“Open it.” Said by Mother after handing me a small jewelry box. I accepted it with both hands. “A present?” I asked and she nodded as a reply. The box was silver and my name was engraved on it. Amara Fairoza Calla?
“My last name is Calla?” I asked with confusion. It’s been years since the last time I asked about my last name. Mother would always try to act deaf every time I asked about my father’s name. I had been wandering for years and now that I learned about it, I’m very surprised.
“Yes, my dear.”
“Why? I mean, Calla is only for the royal bloods. Why is my last name Calla? Are we a royalty? Am I a princess, Mother?” I said with an exciting tone.
“No, no! Of course not! We are far from them. Uhmm.. Let just say that your father is a very very far relative of the royal family. Just a tiny drop of blood. We are nothing compared to them. We are ordinary people. Y-yeah, that is right.” She said that with a very defensive tone. She kept on looking Aunt Agatha like she wanted to be rescued.
I laughed. “Okay, I get it. I was just joking. There is no way that I’m a royal blood.”
When I opened the box, I saw a precious thing. “A peacock amulet with diamond beads on its feathers.” I uttered as I removed it from its cage.
“It’s stunning. Is this really mine?”
“It’s all yours. It’s a gift from your father.”
When Father died from a chronic disease before I was even born, Mother was left alone with Aunt Agatha. Mother said that my father was a smart and nice man. He loved to help other people, especially the poor and the needy. He didn’t want violence and was always been fair to everyone.
The day started with calm blows of wind. Leaves were swaying by group like the waves in the sea and the birds were singing the same melody. The sun finally went out from hiding. It’s a nice morning to live in.
“You’re so beautiful Amara. You look like your mother.” Said by Miss Adele who bought a loaf of bread from Mother’s small bakery store. I was assigned to watch the store since Mother was still baking inside. After my simple birthday celebration, we continued our day the usual.
“Thank you, Miss Adele. Your beauty shines the most. Enjoy the bread!”
“The bread’s tasty. We will enjoy it, surely!” she said with a wave before taking off.
In the small town of Vevin located up in the mountains, a community of people called “People of the Woods” were living harmoniously. Our homes were made of woods, bamboos, coconut leaves and rattans, and some were made of rocks and cement. Surrounding the place was a wall made of rocks to keep us safe from wild animals. Basic needs were already been provided by nature, the food, the shelter and the water were everywhere. And if we needed anything or wanted to have other necessities, we had to go down the mountain and buy it in the city, where trading takes place. A one and a half hour travel from here.
I worked in the bakery during the morning and during the afternoon I would go out deep in the woods with my friend, Bella, to look for supplies. Most of the time, we would look for herbal medicines and would trade it in the market for the next morning.
Usually, we would leave the mountain at five in the morning and would arrive in the City of Trading at six, almost seven. The trade starts very early, so we need to be early as well. City of Trading was also called the Place for People. It was like a hide-out and a meeting place for everyone.
But in this afternoon, Bella and I planned to go down. I promised Mother to be back before the sun set. Bella was going to meet her boyfriend, who worked in the pier, and I couldn’t just let her go down alone. Even if we lived in the woods for years, it was still scary.
Fahmi, Bella’s boyfriend, was with his group of friends.
“Hi, Amara! It’s nice seeing you in a day like this.” Said by Gael, one of Fahmi’s friends. I didn’t really like it when Fahmi was with them. I didn’t want to be rude to Gael so I just smiled. I had this uncomfortable feeling around him ever since Bella told me that Gael liked me.
In times like this, Fahmi would treat us food and drinks. He would tour us around the city and buy us some sweets for us to take home.
The city was crowded. It was loud and full of adventures. People were having fun. They were here and there. They were bumping each other’s shoulders just by merely walking and it didn’t even bother them. When I had my first step here, I would always say sorry when I bumped into someone. There were those men who were singing at the sides, couples who were doing magic tricks, and merchants who were approaching people to buy their products. Lanterns and decors were hanging by the streets.
But the fun was suddenly replaced by a big commotion. The people were alarmed by the sudden darkness. The sky was getting dark, not because the sun was setting, but because a group of thick smoke was quickly rising and covering the clouds.
A loud scream from the crowd woke up my senses. “The mountain is burning! Everything’s on fire!!”
My family. Our home.
CHAPTER TWOFear took over my soul. The thick smoke continued to expand. It was not stopping any minute by now. My palms were trembling and wet. My eyes were burning and I couldn’t utter a single word, because if I try, I would burst out into tears.Bella lost it. “Amara!” she cried and hugged me. She was crying out loud but it only tickled my ears, it was more of a whisper to me than a cry. I was hearing the loud bangs of my heart clearer than her loud cries.I started to sob when a burning image of our home flashed in my head. I broke out from Bella’s embrace and faced her.“W-we need to go back..” my voice cracked. I was out of air. My throat was aching and my chest was struggling to catch some air.I gathered all my strength to step out from where
CHAPTER THREEVoices were everywhere. My head that was throbbing woke me up from unconsciousness. When I opened my eyes, I saw the night sky. It was plain black and the moon was watching me. Branches of trees and its leaves were adding up to my view. There were no stars but the night sky was still stunning. It looked like a painting from down here.I sat up from where I was lying and a sheath fell from my embrace. It was meant to protect me from the cold breeze. I was still wearing the same wet white dress. The red stain was still there and my wound was now wrapped up with a piece of cloth. But I was still in the woods.A bonfire at the center was illuminating and keeping the place warm. Group of people were gathering around it like they were having a meeting. And I was frightened with the sight of the weapons that were placed on the ground.Memories came rushing to me. I tried to stand up without ma
CHAPTER FOURThe quest to the north took us up to three days. We used horses to hike the trails of the mountains and stopped from time to time to rest for a while and eat. During the night, half of us would sleep for hours and the other half would guard the dark. We also passed by some groups of people living in the dark side of the mountains along the way. Lucky for us that we didn't encounter those groups that were aggressive and territorial. After the long nights and the tiring days, we finally arrived to the place. It was located across a river. The camp was busy. It was a sight of people doing their assigned task, they were busy working but were happy. I saw wide variety of fruits and vegetables in the field. There were those who were feeding the animals and watering the plants. Some were cooking in the big pots and others were blowing fires under it. Cloths were hanging outside and children were playing.&nb
CHAPTER FIVEKuya Zouli took me to the camp’s headquarter and training center. The place was meters away from the camp’s heart. It was filled with training materials and equipments, with obstacles around the ground and some weapons hanging by the sides. It was not the first time I entered the camp’s headquarter. This would probably be the fifth or the sixth time, but I was here before for the reason of bringing packed foods for the trainees.I patiently waited for Kuya Zouli to spill the reason why I was brought here but he didn’t even talk to me along the way. He was just ignoring me. He would always treat me like I was some kind of dirt in his shoe.”Morning, Amara!” some greeted me when they saw us walking. “Morning too! Don’t forget your lunch.” I greeted back. I was like a parrot repeating its words again and again every time we encountered someone al
CHAPTER SIXA grand wall made of hard rocks amused me upon reaching the marvelous Calla Palace. The wall was high, it was mighty and intimidating. It was exactly what my mother described. It screamed power and royalty.Royal guards were guarding at the entrance of the main gate and people outside it were busy. The main gate was filled with gold and silver. A large peacock was engraved at its center. Flags were also spread outside.“Identification, please.” One of the guards asked me as I approached close to the gate.“Faisa Montanier of Malieth, one of the newly hired cooks for the event.” I stated as I handed them the royal document that proves that I was truly summoned inside the palace, alongside with the folded apron that Kuya Zouli gave me few nights ago.Our group scattered around, we planned to enter the palace at different times. Some of us were al
CHAPTER SEVEN“Surprised?” the princess, who was really a witch, uttered. She then laughed wickedly and it sounded annoying to the ears.“How-“ that was the only word that came out from my lips. I was cut short after three royal guards came to me. They were armored and were holding swords.I looked back to where Master Dante was. He fell on his knees with his blood still dropping. Our members were with him, kneeling and all were badly injured. Augustos’ men were encircling them and pointing their swords towards their head.“Arrest her!” the wicked witch ordered her men.I breathed in and out. I charged my strength onto my hand blade. I should trust myself. I trained for months. The first guard tried to strike me with his sword. I barely escaped his first attempt and on his second I managed to make a cut some
CHAPTER EIGHTI closed my eyes tightly, waiting for something to happen. Our nose touched. His breathing caressed my pale skin. It was tickling but I kept up with it. His lips were moist and soft, like the muffins at our bakery store. It was warm but the light touch immediately sent chills down to every bit of my being. My heart went insane. It was pounding like crazy. I forbade myself from breathing for the moment. I remained unmoving for a second or two before deciding to press mine to his a little bit deeper. T-this should be enough, right? No need to m-move, right?“The bride finally kissed the Goblin!”Excitements and joy filled the four corners of the room. It was like a dream come true for them. But after another couple of seconds, nothing seemed to happen. I withdrew from the kiss. I finally was able to gasp a pinch of air. His eyes were still closed, his handsome face remained
CHAPTER NINEAs soon as the cells were opened, we ran our way out. The assigned guards to the underground prison were still sleeping heavily. Augustos was still unaware of our breakout. Together with the old captives and the rest of the campers, we climbed up the walls and made it to the forest. This must be the forest where Mother and Aunt Agatha run to escape the palace and save our lives.Fafaniya was still flying beside me. She was glowing in the dark like those fireflies in the woods, except for her shining dusts. The night breeze was cold and the forest was filled with mist coming from above.Amethyst who was struggling from her injured leg was being supported by my petite body. Her arm was p
CHAPTER SIXTEEN Our sudden appearance inside the cave made the bats tousled around. My heart jumped and every one of us got surprised. The path was dim with only the light coming from the other end and Fafaniya’s glowing presence. “Gosh!” Fafaniya shrieked. She then hid behind me. “It is fine, Fafaniya. They are already gone.” I assured. The bats flew towards the light, more frightened than us. In the middle of our way to the other end, I finally had the opportunity to change my clothes. “I think I need to change.” I interrupted the group in the middle of the walk. The men simultaneously looked away. Prince Conrad coughed a dry one. “R-Right, it must be uncomfortable.” he said in an awkward tone still not facing me. “We will wait for you outside.” Kuya Zouli agreed. He gave me my knapsack before following Napoleon who was already moving his way outside the cave. Amethyst and Fafaniya accompanied me. When I saw the three gentlemen reached the light and disappeared from our sig
CHAPTER FIFTEENThe Marchans then changed into their angel form. They unfolded their hidden wings and spread it wide and free.“Protect our Mother!” the girl who mixed our blood commanded her kind. They managed to free themselves from Fafaniya’s power. The weather was starting to go insane. The winter snow tripled and the wind blew strong and fast. A squall happened in just a split second. They carried and tried to fly with them the sick old woman they all called Mother but they failed. A strong blow twirled to our direction and it made all of us slammed on the trees, including the Mother.“Woah!” Fafaniya spun in the air like a dry leaf blown by the wind.My back ached from the impact and we all landed on the icy ground.
CHAPTER FOURTEENI woke up at the sound of the horns and the drums. When I opened my eyes, it was already morning, yet the clouds were nimbus and dark gray. It was the sky’s warning that it would rain despite the winter snow.I was lying flat on a cold hard surface. My wrists were tied above my head so as my ankles. I could see how my chest was rising up and down from my petty position.People were scattered around and doing some dancing rituals while chanting unknown languages. Their hairs were decorated with white and black feathers with red stains painted on their faces.I was wearing the same dress from last night. I tried to free my hands from the cuffs but it was useless.“Hey!” I screamed. They started dancing around me. A young girl went to my side. She dipped her fingers in a coconut shell and painted my face with the red liquid lik

CHAPTER THIRTEEN“Where are you taking me?!” I asked panicking. We were still up in the sky. His wings were real big and fascinating. It spread wide and pure white. He was like an angel fell from above; still encircling his arms around my chest and waist. White tiny ices were still falling and I could feel how it melted against my skin. It was cold so as the wind coming from the night sky.Looking down below, the lights were giving me the best view and the moon was getting closer as we flew farther.“Home. Don’t worry we will land soon, my wife.” he ensured as he tightened his embrace.I held onto his arms. I didn’t want to fall.“Why are you doing this? I will forgive you for snatching me from my friends, just return me to them. And can you please stop calling me that?”“Stop calling
CHAPTER TWELVEMy hands rested over his shoulders while his were on my waist. Trying not to ruin the rhythm and fun, my head let him guide and lead the tempo. He was maneuvering my every move and I did nothing but to obey and follow. I knew this was not right but my body and words were betraying me.I wanted to stop but I couldn’t. I tried to control my actions but it only made my head ached. Fafaniya was stopping me and she even did some pinching to my ear but she only ended up being ignored by me.“My bad. I forgot to introduce myself, my lady.” he uttered as he removed his one hand from my waist and instead held on to my hand in order to spin me around, 360 degrees. And when I faced him again, he revealed his name.
CHAPTER ELEVEN“Amara, you forgot about this.” Amethyst handed me a mask. The mask would only cover half of the wearer’s face, including the forehead and the area surrounding the eyes. It was a masquerade mask. It was shaped like those butterfly wings. It was crafted from silver, with crystal beads designed at its corners and a black sun with four rays at the upper center. It has a lace at both ends.“Who owns it?” Amethyst asked curiously.“The Goblin’s.” I mumbled shyly as I received it. It was made of hard material and a little bit rough yet it looked so classy in a manly manner.“Let’s go.” I added hurriedly.I didn’t want to talk about how it ended up with me. I didn’t want to turn i
CHAPTER TENFate was really unpredictable and playful. In just a snap of a finger, things went from dark to light, left to right and death to life. We were saved from doom. A prince with his shining armor came to the scene and made a beautiful entrance. Just like how his beautiful white horse stood on the ground with might, he was walking with ease and appeal. All I knew was – I was swept off from my feet, riding the white horse with him at my back.“You are safe now, Amara.” His words were like feathers on my ears.I was confused yet my eyes still managed to find its way to where the Goblin was. He was truly in deep pain. I could see it. I didn’t know but I could also feel it. He was still kneeling, groaning in pain and anger.“I promise to find you. By then, I will never hesitate to take your life away.”His voice w
