DENORI'S POV....

"A mother is your first friend, your best friend and your friend forever"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is it a miracle? hmm, not so much. It becomes a miracle when is an unknown welcomed occurrence, but I knew, I knew I was going to get in. I had that feeling and an abundance of faith that I will get into the prestigious MARIE-MOUNT COLLEGE.I promised myself and my mother that i would get admitted and that is what i have done.

The adulation I have for Marie-Mount College made me hammer away to get all the marks necessary. Nights have gone by without my head touching my pillow. I read my books everyday and every hour, they became my best friends for almost a year and I don't regret any of it because i have received my great reward now.

The good name attached to completing such a school was all the boost my eagerness required. The opportunities available after completing empowered me.I was not about to let the school of my dreams pass by my door without begging.I knew they wanted exceptional, so i made myself prodigious.

I didn't just do it for my own benefit. It was all for my mother. All i want is to wipe every tear from her beautiful big brown eyes.No more headaches or smelly feet from wearing the same shoe to work for ,nearly, two years. No more pain from being discriminated against.

I look around our tiny matchbox house as tears strolled down my face. "no more."

she deserved better and i will stop at nothing was going to stop me from making her happy.

I put the finishing touches om my surprise cake.I had decided to disclose my acceptance int the school using a home made cake.I carefully place the cake on our three legged dining table.

I re-examine the cake to make sure everything was perfect.I re-positioned the 'i love you more than chocolate' sign so it was a tad slanted.I clean the sides of the plate which was stained with a little chocolate icing.I used chocolate flavoring because it was my mother's and i's favorite.

I wanted to go big but considering our financial situation, this was the biggest i could go.I had borrowed most of the expensive ingredients from my mother's friends and the sign from my best friend, Jamie.

The shuffling of feet and the rattling of a set of keys was the sign that my mother had arrived.I placed the addmission letter in front of the cake and positioned myself behind the table.I put on the biggest smile i had as nervousness begun to consume me.

I start to shout out 'i love you' a soon as she entered.I run to hug her and took her bags.

"Did i forget my birthday again?" she asked, confused.

"no mom, we've celebrated that in April already."

she continued to stare at me with her big eyes gesturing that i continue.

"This as you can see"I point to the cake. "This is a thank you gift, for everything you have done and is still doing for me." I hand over the letter.

She carefully opened it with a crease on her forehead. She opened her mouth slightly and begun reading it.

After some time, She looked up all teary-eyed and I couldn't help but smile." surprise !!!!!!!!!"

She hugged me tightly and tears started to roll down her eyes. tears of joy, i assume.

We stood there for 10 minutes vegetated, both crying our hearts out. She was pleased and that made me happy.

"I am so proud of you. You never cease surprising me. You all make me smile and i am grateful to God for a daughter like you"

I could not help the huge grin that spread across my face.My cheeks turn deep red with flattery.

"Do you think my father would be proud of me too?"I dared asking.

The only thing she tells me about him is that he kicked the bucket some years ago.She never says when, how or why. She never even speaks of him.

She burst into tears. She started to shake violently and her sobs grew louder.

I didn't mean to hurt her by bringing up sad memories.

"Mom please, please stop crying,"I start to panic. She cradled herself and begun to wail.

I give her some space and sit all by myself on the cold hard floor at the dining room, blaming myself like always.

You are so stupid...

Everything was going perfectly until i decided to open my big mouth....

I am such an incompetent fool,

I hate myself, i have always hated myself.

I sit and sob silently for God knows how long. She probably won't want to eat the cake now, i don't blame her.It was my fault and it will always.....

"Denori, darling"My mother's sweet voice broke my chain of thoughts."I am sorry for the waterworks earlier, don't blame yourself because it was mine."

She wrapped me into a warm hug and continued."It is my fault he is no longer with us and i blame myself every single day. You, you just reminded me of how i deprived you from getting to know you father and i will never be able to forgive myself for......"

"No, please don't say that"I hugged her back tightly. "It is not your fault."

"But you don't even know that.I am sorry, please forgive me."Hot tears rolled down unto my tee-shirt, staining it.

She continued to wail and ask for forgiveness.

I hugged her tighter hopping it will send all her pain away.

"Please don't hate me, please don't" she begged. "I have to tell you something, you deserve to know."

I nodded and squirmed.

She broke away from the comfortable yet suffocating hug and held my face in her hardened palms, which is as a result of all the scrubbing and washing she endured all year round.

I wanted to tell her it was okay but she was squashing my face and my mouth shut.

"ummm, i am lost of words." She hesitated for a moment. She inhaled heavily, drawing strength from within her.

"Baby, my baby girl,"She smiled showing signs of hesitation."I love you very much."

I frowned looking at her intently.

"Is that all?"I ask not fully convinced.

"Yes, i just thought i didn't tell you that enough"She replies, and nod my head in pretense.

My mother can be a good liar but i know when someone is deceiving me, God didn't give me these brains for nothing.

"Let's go and eat my cake, i am famished" She said happily and i smile.
