Flashlights were on and the cameras were rolling. The reporters were on standby, awaiting Oscar's presence.
Oscar on the other hand, adjusted his tie and placed his cellphone into his suit pocket. He turned to Mayra who was busy operating on her laptop and asked. "Is everything set, Mayra?" "Yes Sir! The guards are on standby so you have nothing to worry about" He nodded. " Let's go then" Mayra stepped out and pulled the door for him. He stepped out and the guards shielded the reporters from getting close to him. He had officially set up a conference so he could clear up his name. About a month ago when he was accused, he had kept away from the public. Being as influential as he is, his business associates were demanding answers and some kept pulling out of business deals. The press conference was necessary, to tell the public who exactly is the culprit and also clear his name. Getting signaled by Mayra that the stage is ready, he walked up stage as confident as ever while waiting for the questions to begin. "My name is Oscar Williams, CEO of Ever-White Company. You all know the reason why this press conference was organized. The floor is open, please go ahead and ask your questions.." He spoke into the microphone, heaving in a deep breath. *Being this influential, how do you feel being accused of murder?* His first question was thrown and he gave a brief and simple response. " I must say it was shocking!" *Then how do you feel to know that your girlfriend attempted to murder Ms Katie Roland? Do you say she was jealous or what?* "Jealousy could be the main reason though, I wouldn't know!..." He said and paused. "Being a countryside woman, she must have been low minded. I'm just glad she admitted to her crimes and is being punished by the law!" *Then would you make it up to Ms Katie Roland by getting married to her once she's out of Coma? She was your ex girlfriend right, Mr Oscar?* That caught Oscar off guard. As much, he really wasn't expecting such question. He was quiet, his eyes searching through the crowd of reporters. What should he say? Would he?.. or would he not? "Please answer the question Mr Oscar!" His thoughts were interrupted. "I honestly can not make a rash decision right now. Let's just hope for her quick recovery" He responded smoothly. The reporters did not stop throwing questions after questions and the words that left Oscar's lips, are those that would totally paint him innocent. ________________ Althea pulled her eyes open to find herself in an unfamiliar environment. She groaned while pulling herself up from the bed. Looking around, she met a lady whose back was turned against her and she was wearing a white coat as though she was was doctor. "Where am I? " She asked, making the doctor turn around upon hearing her question. "Where else?, if not the prison clinic?" The doctor responded rudely and walked up to her, pushing her back the bed. Althea did not say a word as she just let the doctor run the final check ups on her. Just by looking at the doctor, she could tell she's mean and wouldn't dare asking further questions. She felt better than how she had remembered. The pains had all gone down but still, she would never forget what her inmates did to her. The wardens are all ruthless! How can they whip her mercilessly just because her inmates accused her of starting up a fight? "I have examined you properly, you're free to go!" She said, turning around and taking off her gloves. Althea got up. "Aren't there medications? Like pain relief or something?" She couldn't help but ask. She was badly beaten and whipped like a slave. Her body and muscles still aches a bit, should she just leave without medicines?. "This isn't the fancy medical clinics in town. This is prison Lady, you don't expect to be treated like a princess" Althea sighed unbelievably. "This is so unbelievable" She mumbled underneath her breath. So what if someone needs a serious medical attention, are they just gonna let them die just because they can't administer enough care for criminals, is that it? She walked out of the clinic slowly but bumped into someone just when she stepped out. "You're awake so soon " The middle aged man said to her. She gazed at him, recalling him as the warden who had saved her from being ruthlessly whipped by the other wardens. Not a word from her. She had no idea what to say as everyone seems evil towards her. Who knows, he might be here to give her more punishment for starting up a fight. "I'm Warden Zheng and I must apologize for the insolent behaviors of the wardens who had beaten you up mercilessly. That was a harsh punishment for a young lady as you!" Althea gazed at him, unable to believe that he just apologized. She couldn't believe it but still, it was coming from the head Warden. "How do you feel? I brought you over as soon as you collapsed" He asked, genuine concern written all over his face. But Althea battled if he is actually concerned or just faking it and making mockery of her - She did not respond. "C'mon, I'll walk you back to your Ward" He said. She moved ahead, while he moved right behind her. When they had walked a few distance, she turned suddenly. "Thank you for bringing me over to the clinic.." Her voice came out low. "You looked exhausted, I had to do what I had to to see you okay. Besides, you should avoid getting in trouble with your inmates, they could be dangerous at times.." "I didn't start the fight, I promise..." She defended herself. "I know, but who would want to believe that? We wardens believe the first things we see and hear.." " So what do you have me do? Become their slave?" " If that's what gets you out of danger. Most of the inmates you see here went through that phase and that's what made them strong today" Althea scoffed loudly. Turning around, she was about leave when Warden Zheng spoke up again. "You have such an innocent face, So I find it hard to believe you actually attempted to murder someone. Did you actually try to do that?" Althea wondered why he would ask such questions? Why would he bother to know if she did that or not? Would that get her out of prison ? Without responding, she hastily walked away from Warden Zheng. Getting back to her cell, she met her inmates. Her eyes roamed each one of them as they gazed back at her. She gazed intently at the red haired lady and she didn't fail to let her grudge visible, the lady had a smirk on as well, one that pissed Althea off. Slowly, she walked to her space, got on her bed and laid down, facing the wall. How would she avoid them when they're keen on making her life miserable?Althea woke up the next morning, stretching out her limbs as she yawned slightly. This is the best sleep she have had while in prison these past few days. Well, how else would she describe going to sleep without any form of disturbance from the inmates. It's the best ever. Opening her eyes, she got up only to notice the inmates returning back to their spaces with some glancing randomly at her but the red haired lady maintained a stern look at her. She mentally rolled her eyes and pulled her legs up, bowing her head against her knees, ignoring whatever thing they could be saying. Althea tried to figure out what the day is for she has lost count of the days since she arrived prison. She thought for a while a sighed, recalling what day it actually is. If she wasn't in prison, she would be at work right now, receiving her promotion. The promotion she has always dreamt off, now it's happening but she isn't there. It had taken her a whole lot of efforts to finally want to get promo
Althea tried to be better. It's been a week since Oscar's press conference and she tried to live by the terrible revelation from Oscar. All she wants to do is accept her fate, after all, she brought this upon herself. She was still sulking and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't help the grudge and hate cooking up within her.She would never have believed it if she was told that Oscar would betray her in such manner! But it's all good. Nothing can be done! Absolutely nothing."I do hope he's happy wherever, he is.... " She mumbled painfully. For the past one week, she has refused to go to the prison cafeteria and eat. How can she eat when her heart is heavy and she's hurting deeply. But isn't she only tormenting herself by refusing to eat? While he's out there living a good life and eating healthily." I must really be stupid " She said to herself again and rose from her bed, wiping the lone tears on her cheeks. "Althea Grace Miller?" She looked up when she heard her name -
Gasps, heavy breaths, the sound of heels hitting the ground could be heard. Her gasps echoing through the empty spaces on the streets, the heavy footsteps behind, seemed unending and scary. A lady in her late twenties, short spiky blonde hair, piercing blue eyes- Running for her dear Life. Regardless of how tough and confident she seemed, her life is on the line right now, for she has just messed with the wrong person. She turned, her heart racing as those who were after her were already catching up to her. However, she halted on her steps with full force when a black SUV car screeched in front of her. She held the bag of money close to her chest, her heart thumping really fast and knowing fully well that she was doomed. She took a step back when a man alighted from the car. His black tuxedo suit, dark shades and all... He looked domineering and dangerous. His men had all surrounded her by now, leaving her with no room to escape. She groaned and fell on her knees when her legs were
She could recognize it just anywhere.. That bracelet, it's hers. Oscar had gifted it to her, it's the only thing of Oscar's she has here... How could she have lost it? Why didn't she notice? She could vividly recall taking it off out of anger after listening to Oscar's press conference. How then did it get to the warden? And what does it have to do with the inmate that tried to escape? These and many more questions flooded her mind. "You have ten seconds to step out... " The wardens began to count down and with each count he took, her heart kept beating. However, she stepped out before she could stop herself."Excuse me Warden, the bracelet is mine!." The Warden sharp gaze were fixed on her." So you are that inmate who tried to escape?"" No, I assure you, there seem to be a mix up somewhere. The bracelet is mine but I have no idea how it ended up with you. I didn't try to escape, I promise " She said in her defense. She hasn't been this confused in her entire life? How did th
Althea jerked up when a cup of iced water was poured on her, bringing her back to consciousness.Perhaps, it could have been better if she had just died than to be woken up to a life filled with more misery. She looked at the Wardens whom she have come to despise so much. They are also part of this torment she's experiencing by being so unjust."Althea..." She looked towards the direction of the voice, It was Warden Zheng."Please leave us.." He said to the other wardens who hesitated before leaving. When he was sure they were gone, he moved closer to Althea, squats to her level and places a comforting hand on her shoulder."I'm sorry this had to happen. I wasn't on duty that night, I would have done something to prevent this. You must have been so scared, weren't you?" Althea casts her gaze on him. She could see sincerity and concerns in his eyes. She nodded her head, responding to his question. "I.. I promise, I didn't try to escape" She forced herself to say."Oh dear! I believe
"Gosh! I feel fresh.." Lynx said, twirling hair sideways. " I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt this relieved and clean "" Well, we won't get to do this again until six months later... "Lynx sighed. " It's what we have to pass through as prisoners. Althea was quiet, her mind racing with thoughts of what Lynx had said."Let me ask you something Lynx" She turned to Lynx. "Tell me Lynx and I want you to be honest, if you had not been caught by the police, what would you be doing by now?" Lynx placed her hand underneath her jaw, thinking hard. "Let's just say I'd be super rich by now. Having mansions built all round the states. I'd probably be a multimillionaire, don't you think?"" That actually sounds weird! Why would you live off someone else's livelihood? " Althea asked. " Just kidding... " Lynx teased, nudging her arms playfully. "Well, to answer your question rightly, I guess I'd be better off with a well paying Job. I really am not a fraudster you know, but cir
Althea felt belly sweet when the Warden forcefully dragged out the inmates. She stuck out her tongue at the chubby woman who had spoken Ill of her. She's not the type to get back at others, but this was worth it. They shouldn't mess with her just because of her crimes. They're equals regardless."Hey! Why the hell did you do that? " Lynx asked, slapping her arm."They were using hard drugs. Besides you know it's against the law of this precinct right? " "Still, it's none of your business Althea. You shouldn't have had them reported. They have been doing this for ages, and no inmates have dared to report them." Lynx scolded." They got on my nerves. I would have let them off the hook if they had quietly put the cigarettes off but they made fun of my past and I got sick of it. Well, I'm not the one to just see what's wrong and let it slide" Althea said with an eye roll." Well, this is prison... You don't react to certain things. Besides, rights and laws do not work here. They are cert
"Althea!.. Althea!!" Lynx tapped on Althea gently, trying to wake her up. She was awoken by the sound of Althea murmuring in her sleep like she was having a nightmare. Balls of sweats formed on Althea's forehead. Her brows creasing into a frown and her eyes shutting tightly. Lynx tapped her again, her voice raising as she called Althea's name again. Althea jerked up upon hearing her name. Her eyes frantically searching everywhere but as it settled on Lynx, she calmed down a bit. "What happened?" She asked. Lynx crossed her arms underneath her bóöbs, raising her brows. "I should be asking you what happened to you? You kept mumbling in your sleep. Where you having a nightmare or something?" Althea let out a weary sigh, her hand rising to massage the tension in her forehead. She had a nightmare. A really terrifying one at that. It was a dream about Oscar and Katie Roland getting married on the day she was to get released and then, she rushed over to the church to try to stop th
