~23 IN THE SHAWDOWS

I pulled my car over two streets away from Eden's house as she had requested, but I couldn't help feeling a sense of unease. I had noticed Eden's mood had been off since she saw me with Lenora at the mall, but I couldn't put my finger on what exactly was bothering her. Is it Lenora or something else? As I turned to her to speak, she avoided my gaze, and her body language was closed off.

"What's wrong, Eden? You seem distant," I probed gently.

Eden sighed, her eyes flicking up to meet mine before quickly looking away. "It's nothing," she muttered, twisting a lock of her fiery red hair around her finger. "Just Charles. I don't want him prying into my life."

My confusion was palpable as I furrowed my brow, "Charles? What does he have to do with anything that is happening now?"

Eden turned to face me, and I couldn't help but take in her features. Despite the tension between us, I found myself admiring the way the sunlight filtered through her red hair, casting a fier
