The drive back home was silent as we all absorbed the news that Luke had told us. It was very quiet in the car.

"I'm sorry to ask this but are you alright?" I asked Magnus, not knowing how he had taken the news. We had just gotten back to the castle and he was still by himself.

Luke and I had known better than to say anything on the ride back as he digested the information. I had to ask him though just to be sure.

"Of course, I'm fine. My father has been inactive for a long time so it's not really much of a shock." He said, sounding surprised that I had thought that he will mourn.

I had to be satisfied with his answer. Not like I could push the matter if I wanted to. Usually, it takes time to process death and what it really means. I know because the same thing had happened when I had lost my parents. It didn't hit me until later on.

The atmosphere of the castle itself was somber and moody. I wasn't sure that the news had spread just yet but the feelings of the Lycan royalty were comm

MAGNUS POVBack in my office, I pondered on the new development and thought of the preparations for the burial. There was a slight change of power as I now had the full might of a Lycan King bestowed on me."Are you alright? I know you weren't that close to him but still, the burden of the Kingdom now is an added stress.""Why does everyone think I'm not fine? I've been practically ruling the Kingdom since he got sick. There's no difference now.""Alright, I'm just looking out for you" He said."Okay. You'll fetch another doctor we can trust, not another one of these palace quacks. An independent one this time around.""Magnus, there is no proof…""I don't want to hear it," I said, cutting him short. "Just do as I say.""As you wish, your Majesty." He said, leaving the room. I knew him well enough to know that he was a bit angry. He only called me by my title during such moments. Not that I minded at this moment. I had more important things to think about.A few moments later, there

SOPHIE'S POVMy heart plagued me with thoughts of what had transpired the previous night. I had to see Luke to tell him what I had learned so he could tell Magnus. Luke would know how to go about it better than me since he was the Beta.As I had excused myself from the sight of Magnus torturing the doctor the previous day, I had heard footsteps behind me and seen his body being carried away by the palace guards. I realized that he was dead.I had spied the other doctor walking rapidly out of the palace and went to confront him directly. He looked surprised at being addressed."Dr Lyon, Magnus killed him?" I asked, stopping him in his tracks."No, he poisoned himself before he could go further with the investigation.""You were there with us at first," He said, recognizing me as he looked over at me. "Tell me, why did you leave?,""I couldn't stand the sight of the torture," I mumbled. In truth, I was scared that I might give away the knowledge that I had overheard what the Queen had d

MAGNUS POVI strode into the office at a hurried pace and sank into my leather chair with a sigh. My body was tired from not resting for days now but I refused to give into the stress. The murder of my father was shocking, a very bold move on the part of the pepetrators.I had doubled security around the palace after that as I planned to secretly carry out my investigation. The doctor definitely didn't act alone. I would have to start from the kitchen, whoever it was would have had to bribe a staff. I would have to interrogate the kitchen staff one by one till I found the culprit. There wasn't going to be any escape for them. If it took a repeat of what happened to Kal Fang to bring them to justice, I vowed that I would do it.I went to Betty's room to check on her as I hadn't seen her since morning. It was about three hours to the burial. After that, I planned to see Sophie."Come in," She said after I knocked twice. I opened the door and went in.She was playing chess with herself.

SOPHIE POVI subtly tried to locate Luke in the crowd. The reception of the crowning ceremony had moved to the grand hall in the castle. It was a lively atmosphere and there was much dancing and merrying around. It was frustrating that I couldn't talk to a Lycan through the mindlink unless he talked first to me.I finally spotted him doing shots with his warriors. He won the drinking bout and there was a lot of boasting on his part after which he poured the rest of the content in the bottle on his head. They were all a wild bunch."Sophieee!," He exclaimed as he saw me, drawing out the sound of my name and I knew that he was slightly drunk. "Come dance with me," He said dragging me off before I could protest. We were on the dance floor in no time and he was spinning me quite gracefully. I was surprised that he could dance so well. I remembered my dance with Magnus, it was okay at best but I could tell that he had been out of practice. The goddess knew when last he danced."You owe m

I awoke to the golden glow of dawn seeping through the silk curtains that draped the grand soft bed. I remembered sleepily that I wasn't in my room. As I stretched beneath the plush blankets, my fingers reached out instinctively, searching for the warmth of my Magnus body, but they met only the cool emptiness of his side of the bed.Confusion clouded my thoughts, and I blinked away the remnants of sleep as I propped myself up on my elbow. "Magnus?" I called out, my voice barely above a whisper since it was still early. There was no response, he had to be in the bathroom then, I thought. I listened for sounds from that direction but heard none. The weight of an unsettling feeling pressed upon my chest as I swung my legs over the edge of the bed and rose to my feet, the sheer nightgown rustling softly around me.I padded across the chamber, the cool marble floor chilling my bare feet, and pushed aside the heavy drapes that divided the window. I peered outside and couldn't see anything

  • A fresh start with the Lycan king    A strange confession

MAGNUS POVI couldn't believe my ears when Miss Prisca stepped forward and admitted that she was the one who had killed the King. There was a collective gasp from everyone at her words."Miss Prisca, this is quite a serious matter, I'm not joking here" I said, trying to be polite. We had been close since I was a child and didn't want to insult her."I said that I was the one who poisoned the tea he took," She said, further confirming her words. She stood with her arms folded and seemed resigned to any fate that awaited her."You are covering up for someone, who is it?" I asked, impatient with her. She had to be shielding someone from my wrath."Miss Prisca?" Sophie called, going to stand beside her. "You don't have to protect the person. Please reconsider what you're saying. She shrugged off Sophie's hands from her shoulder, her face was now animated. She looked like she had been bottling up her feelings for long."I've hated your father, the King for a long time. He is everything wro

  • A fresh start with the Lycan king    The Council

SOPHIE POVWe got to the council minutes later as we didn't spend much time on the road. Magnus had driven in a hurry all the way. It was a miracle that we hadn't gotten into an accident. The building was a large one and stood regal among its smaller counterparts. There were porters around too who saluted us as soon as they saw us. The whole thing was grand. Magnus looked at me to gauge my reaction to the place but I threw my face away. The incident with Miss Prisca had been so shocking. Despite her admitting it, I didn't believe one word of her confession. She was a perfect cat paw for the Queen since she had a motive. The symbol she had made with her hand before she had walked away confirmed my suspicions. She had cupped her hand to form an inverted chalice. In werewolf slang, it meant Luna. I had thought she was paying me her last respect but on the drive here, I realized that I wasn't the only Queen in the kingdom. She had been referring to the King's mother.Despite my sad thoug

"What did you say?" Magnus said, rising up in a flash. His voice thundered across the room as his aura flared out making us all shake in our seats."Calm down, Magnus, hear him out first," Mr Thompson advised him. I knew what was coming realizing the warning was in vain.It was already too late, Magnus had already wolfed out and grabbed Mr Lawson by the neck. The Lycans all pleaded with him but to no avail. Mr Lawson wolfed out too trying to save himself but Magnus grip on him was too tight even as he did. We could all feel his sheer strength. Tapping his hand quickly , Mr. Lawson, still in his partially transformed wolf form, gasped for breath as he struggled to speak. The council members, all realizing the gravity of the situation, were all on their feet. They all frantically tried to convince Magnus to release him. Mr Sinclair, the charmer and I were the only one still seated, I was curious to see how it was going to play out. Mr. Thompson's voice remained steady as he implored Ma

SOPHIE POVI looked up with a sigh at the old decrepit building before knocking the door and I went in buoyed by a prompt from inside. I was nervous as it had taken me a long time to trace this location and now that I was here, it felt unreal. I was finally going to find out the truth. I was ushered into what I presumed to be a matron's office by a nun wearing a long gray habit. "The matron will be with you shortly. I hope you find what you came here for" She said with a wave before stepping out leaving me alone with my thoughts and the tired creaking fan above.I was trying hard to forget Magnus. There was a joint burial the previous week for them both. It wasn't still clear how they died. My guess was that they had been poisoned in their cells. Our enemies were also within the castle. Magnus' mother was right though, Kal Fang was no threat to us again, my guess was that he had been placated with Magnus' death. He might be the one behind it.With the death of the Alpha king and his

  • A fresh start with the Lycan king    Prelude

SOPHIE POVThe next day, I found myself thinking back to what the Queen had done the previous day and how she had stood her ground against the whole council. I wasn't sure I could do that and succeed. I would be eaten alive by all of them. Whatever she had done or not done, there was no denying her influence among them.So it was that I found myself heading to her room when I was done freshening up for the day. There were more guards around her room than other places. Magnus must have given them orders to watch her closely. He had still not trusted her fully. I hesitated then knocked gently on her door. There was no reply and I knocked again. Perhaps my first attempt had been too feeble."Who is it," I heard her ask from inside."It's Luna Sophie," I answered back. There was a long pause before she replied."Come in," She said at last. She sounded surprised which I knew she would. On normal occasions, we couldn't stand each other's company. No doubt, she was wondering what I was her

  • A fresh start with the Lycan king    The agitators

SOPHIE'S POV I was in the room, thinking about how to help King Magnus. I had called a lot of people for advice none of their suggestions worked for me. It was far too dangerous and I didn't want any harm toward my man. I breathed out loudly and lowered my head, it was frustrating and I hated the situation. This was the same man I had waited for when Luke was ruling, I had hoped he would return one day and make me happy again but to my deepest regret, I had forgotten that he might have gone through a lot and things were difficult for him too. If only I was a little wiser, I could have stopped him when he decided to call for a meeting immediately after his recovery and I could have taken care of more things before he woke up so his mind would be relaxed by the time he opened his eyes. Things wouldn't have been so difficult for him and he could have been happy now, filled with a lot of enjoyment at the moment instead of what he was going through. I felt bad toward him and I felt bad

  • A fresh start with the Lycan king    Feverish mind

MAGNUS' POV Everything was becoming dimmer in my head, I was unable to process the things that were happening to me but one thing was clear and that was the fact that I was among enemies. All of them hated me, they all wanted to kill me and were only being nice because I was so quiet these days. After what Luke did to me, many others wanted to try the same thing and in the end, they might succeed just as Luke had done back then. I couldn't let my wolf take over again, it would have killed so many people then if it hadn't stopped and I hated to kill my people. The ones that needed to die were the enemies surrounding me and pretending to be sincere when they weren't. I paced around the room, thinking of how to escape the wrath of the enemies. I was weaker than I once was, the wolfsbane was still taking effect on me, making me weaker every day. Before I started my revenge, the first person I needed to kill was Luke and I would make sure to do that, then I would find the lady who betr

SOPHIE'S POV I watched him leave abruptly from the meeting and I was bothered. "Everyone, I think it's time to leave. I will go and calm the king down and he will call on you all later." I told them before leaving the gathering too. I went straight to his room and I saw him lying in his bed. "King Magnus," I called. He rolled around in his bed and turned to look at me "What was that? Why were you siding with him when he did that to you?" He asked, his voice was calm as he sat up in his bed and looked at me. I walked closer to him and sat down beside him. "I wasn't defending him. I was just worried that you would make a mistake because of your anger. Luke already dealt with him and he is missing an arm already. Cutting off his pack would only endanger the lives of innocent people and I'm sure you don't want that either." I said to him and he was quiet for a while. "I understand. I was very angry back there when I learnt about what he did to you. I wanted to deal with him and the e

  • A fresh start with the Lycan king    Broken alliance

MAGNUS' POV The celebration continued as everyone had their fill, laughed and had fun. Sophie sat down beside me, staring and smiling at me now and then. She seemingly wasn't enjoying the celebration like everyone else and it was obvious she wanted to leave as fast as possible but was only waiting for me. I wanted to leave too, it had been a while since I last saw her so being with other people paled in comparison to how much I wanted to be with her. However, it would be rude to leave the Alphas who came from different places to celebrate with me and pledge their alliances. "Lord Magnus, will you drink with me?" Jax asked, coming toward me with a bottle of wine and a cup in hand. I nodded my head "Yes. Bring that here." I said cheerfully. I wasn't happy with him but I had to keep my font clean. He walked over and placed a cup in front of me as he was about to pour the drink. I looked at the cup carefully, images of how that lady drugged me back then played in my head and I frowne

MAGNUS' POV I groaned loudly as I touched my forehead, it was aching so bad that I found it hard to open my eyes. It felt like I had been out of it for a very long time and getting back to things was a bit difficult for me. I removed my hand from my head with my eyes still closed, trying to calm my mind so I would be able to open my eyes. It was hard at first but soon, my eyes opened only to be closed back again due to the sudden exposure to light that seemed like it was going to remove my eyes from its socket. I groaned again, wondering what had happened to me until I heard the door open and someone rushed in "King Magnus!" The person shouted. My senses were dull as it was hard to figure out who it was but the voice was so familiar that I dared not mistake it for someone else's. It was Sophie. "Sophie?" I called out loud, still unable to open my eyes. I felt her hands on my chest as she finally got to me "You're awake. I'm so glad." She mumbled. She seemed very close to me so m

SOPHIE'S POV Seeing King Magnus again warmed my heart a great time and the thought that the whole thing was over made me over the moon. I had always imagined a scenario where I would never see him again, a scenario in which my belief of him still being alive was a total lie but when I got to the throne room and saw him standing there, it felt like a dream to me. I pinched myself several times to make sure I wasn't dreaming and when he announced a duel with Luke, I couldn't be happier even though I was scared for him too. Well... Everyone was scared as they knew how dirty and devious Luke could be. While King Magnus was purely strong, Luke could always do evil things that would make him win. "It's over... It's all over now." I couldn't help but mutter with tears in my eyes. My happiness knew no bounds, I was so happy that my heart wouldn't stop racing and what I wanted the most at the moment was to leave the crowd, go to a room and make up the times we had missed together. I was r

MAGNUS' POV Luke flew to a distance and only stopped when he crashed into a building. He was there for a few minutes and I was already thinking he had given up only to see him running toward the battleground again. He stood a few feet away from me and wiped the corner of his mouth that was already filled with blood and I could see a part of his belly, injured too. It was taking longer to heal which made me wonder what was wrong with him. "I told you, didn't I? You and I are not on the same ground, We are not on the same level. I was created to rule, ruling is what I'm made of and if I should let you hurt me here, I don't fit for that." My wolf said and in the next seconds, it appeared in front of Luke and grabbed one of his claws, breaking it. Luke growled in pain, he ran back and growled again "You are... You!" He wanted to say something but kept quiet as he could see my wolf approaching him again. The whole matter was becoming a plaything as my wolf had overpowered him complete
