"Aubrey please tell me you didn't." Leah Davis stared down at the newspaper in front of her.
"It's not that stupid...is it?" Biting my lip I looked over my best friends shoulder at the ad.
"If you need me to answer that than you know the answer. And the paper, really? You couldn't have just put it on social media or something."
"My family would have seen it if I did, so I put it in the newspaper...and
"Why do you even need to put an ad up? Who cares if you show up for Christmas alone?" Leah turned around to look at me, leaning back against the counter.
"Because you know my family. They never shut up about me never bringing home a guy for the holidays. It's a long standing joke that I'll be the crazy cat lady in a few years." I rolled my eyes, hearing my mom's voice in my head saying the exact same thing.
For the past five years that's all I've heard when going home for the holidays. My mom can't seem to ever get that I'm too busy to be dating and bringing home a man for them to meet. There is never a chance she doesn't bring it up.
"And 2 thousand dollars!? Are you insane?"
"I can't ask them to do it for free! Plus it will be a week of their time over Christmas, away from family. They should have something in return." I knew the moment I thought of this I'd have to offer something in return, and 2,000 seem like a good amount.
"Aubrey." Leah groaned. "This is by far the stupidest idea you've ever had."
"I know but I can't take it this year! I can't handle another comment about me being alone for the rest of my life. This way I'll make my mother happy and I won't have to hear it all Christmas long. So its a win win." I paced the length of my living room as I spoke.
"And what happens when they find out it is fake?"
"I-"
Leah interrupted me, "Or the fact that the guy could be a complete freak or murderer!"
"Don't worry Leah I got it figured out. We will exchange emails and make sure he isn't a complete creep. Then we will meet at The Busy Bean which is public and you'll be there in the booth next to us incase anything happens." I explained my less than likely fool proof plan. Judging by the look Leah was sending me she didn't agree with it.
"You are nuts." I quite possibly was but I couldn't do this for another year. Plus it was only for a week. I mean how bad can it be?
"So you'll help?" I moved around the couch and stood in front of her. Giving her my best puppy dog eyes and pouty face, I could see her resolve crumbling. "Please!"
"Fine." Leah groaned. "Guess I can't let you get kidnapped and murdered by these stupid men."
"Thank you!" I threw my arms around her neck. "You are the best best friend I've ever had!"
"I'm your only friend." I heard her mumble but I let it slide. Getting Leah on board was test number one for this whole plan. I wouldn't be able to do it alone.
Leah Davis was definitely the opposite of me, looks part aside. While I was more of a go with the flow type girl, Leah was a planner. She had to know how the week was planned out as well as the weekend. She rarely did anything on a whim and was the most responsible person I've ever met.
Along with how different our personalities were our physical appearance couldn't be farther apart. Leah with her long blonde hair and gorgeous baby blue eyes. She was so petite at 5'4. But one thing about Leah was never take her size for granted. She may be small but she is fierce.
Next to Leah I looked like plain jane. With my light brown hair and green eyes I wasn't anything to write about. I was 5'5 and more on the 'curvier' side than Leah; however I wouldn't call myself curvy. I just happen to have more junk in the trunk than her.
But despite our differences Leah and I have been best friends since our freshman year of college. We were roommates and we evened each other out that we became instant friends. After college we got an apartment together as we each slowly worked out way up in our jobs.
Even though now we don't live together we see each other daily.
"So have you gotten any replies yet?" Leah asked, breaking me out of my thoughts.
"Not yet but I haven't checked my emails today." Truth be told I was nervous to look at my emails. A part of me was nervous that I wouldn't find anyone. Then I was nervous that I would only have freaks applying.
I have spent the last week thinking it all through and going through all the possibilities but now that the ad was up I was starting to second guess this.
"Okay lets check your emails and see if we have any candidates. If you are really going through with this then we need to get started. Christmas is two weeks away." Leah stood up and came over to me, placing her hands on my shoulders.
"This may be the stupidest idea you've ever had, but don't worry Aub we will find you the perfect guy that your parents will love." The confident tone in her voice made me relax a little.
We are never going to find someone!" I groaned as I slide into the booth alongside Leah and her boyfriend Oliver."Don't worry Aub we will." Leah patted my hand sympathetically. My hope was starting to diminish with each passing day. It has been almost a week since I put the ad in the newspaper and I have yet to find the perfect guy to bring home to my family."That guy wasn't too bad." Leah said."Leah he was 60 years old." Beside her Oliver chuckled, finding amusement in this whole thing. I shot him a glare but he kept laughing. He found this whole thing funny when Leah told him what I was doing.Leah and Oliver were not on board with this whole plan but every guy I've met so far they've both been here at The Busy Bean just a booth away in case I needed any help. I think the main reason Oliver tagged along was to get a kick at me meeting with a bunch of weirdos. I think it was payback for all the times I made him uncomfortable when he first started
""He doesn't love you!" I yelled through a mouthful of ice cream at the tv screen. It was Friday night and with nothing better to do I was currently watching Letters To Juliet while stuffing my face with ice cream; despite the cold outside. It's been exactly a week since I put the ad out and with no one working out I planned on spending the entire night wallowing. And there was no better way to do that than with rom-coms, junk food, and a glass of wine....or two.I knew from the start this wasn't a smart plan but being the irrational person I am, I did it anyways. I think one of the main reasons I did it was not because of the teasing my family did each year. No, it was the fact that they may be right. I may actually end up being the crazy cat lady but with dogs when I get older.Every guy I have dated hasn't worked out. They were either too self-centered to even care about my needs, both emotionally and sexually. Or they cheated on me and didn't feel an
At exactly 9:30 am the next morning I walked intoThe Busy Bean with determination that today I was going to find the perfect guy. I woke up early this morning with a better attitude and I took that to mean today was the day.Not seeing Leah yet, I made my way to the counter and ordered a much needed Hazelnut Latte and a muffin before finding an empty booth. It was extremely cold outside which made my body crave the warm coffee. The cafe was slightly busy as it normally was on a Saturday morning. This was a popular spot for locals to come and get great coffee and good food.Right as my coffee and muffin were placed on the table, Leah along with Oliver walked through the doors. Oliver spotted me first since he stood at 6'2 and could easily see above everyone in the cafe."So another date, huh?" Oliver asked, standing in front of the table as Leah slid in first."Yeah some guy named Knox Mikelson. He was very vague in his email." I spoke ov
"No, I did."Looking away from Knox I found a girl no older than 18 standing next to the table. She was severely pretty and it only took a glance at her eyes to find the resemblance. She was clearly Knox's sister with the similar face structure and bright green eyes, but while he had brown hair hers was blonde.Does their entire family have good genes? Was my first thought."Olivia?" Knox questioned, turning to his sister. I watched as she took a deep breath and straightened her spine as if she was getting ready for something."I replied to the ad." She looked directly at her brother as she spoke before she glanced over at me."What was the ad for?" Each word was clipped as they felt Knox's mouth. I could tell he was trying to reign in his anger."To be her fake boyfriend for christmas." With each word Olivia's voice got softer and higher pitched. As soon as the words left her mouth Knox glanced back over at me. I couldn't help but blush und
AubreyIt was once again 8 o'clock at night and I was watching Love Actually while eating a tub of cookie dough. I had eaten all the ice cream last night so onto the cookie dough! I was wallowing once more about my stupid boyfriend plan as well as some other things. The cookie dough was helping but the cute holiday movie was not.I was still kind of pissed at the way the guy from earlier acted towards me. All day his face kept popping into my head, reminding me of how attractive he was but how horrible his attitude was. I had to keep reminding myself that even though he was hot he had a shit personality. Saying that only worked the first few times.I was in the middle of sending Leah a text when my phone buzzed with a new email notification. For a split second I hoped it was another guy interested but then I remembered my boss was suppose to send me some files about a new website.Finishing off my text I opened my emails only to pause. Right at the very t
The next morning I went to met Knox by myself. I didn't want to tell Leah in case it didn't work out. Plus I wasn't so sure how happy she'd be if I woke her up early again today for this. Sunday's were her sleeping in days. I've learned years ago to never bother Leah when she's sleeping. So despite the freezing temperatures outside I trekked from my apartment to The Busy Bean yet again. I was a regular here since it was so close to my place but this past week I've been here way too much. I think the waitress's were starting to wonder what I was really doing there; especially with different guys each time.Having gotten no sleep last night I was in desperate need of some coffee. For some reason I couldn't get my mind to shut off. I thought about work and the huge promotion which just stressed me out. Then I thought about today and Knox which made my stress levels go even higher. It was literally just one thing after another last night.Walking through the door of t
Because Knox apparently had to get back to work, we had to exchange numbers so we could meet again before we leave. I had hoped we would spend the entire day getting to know each other so this whole thing could be believable. When I got home from the cafe I was still reeling that he said yes. Knox was the exact opposite of someone who I thought would agree to this. He was actually the last person I thought I'd 'date'. He had this hard exterior and this impenetrable wall around him.Knox with his gruffness and intense personality was definitely someone I'm not usually into. I mostly found myself going towards the jock type of guy. Which of course never ended well. While Knox kind of had that golden boy look about him with the blonde hair and green eyes, he was definitely the 'bad boy'. Which just equaled troubled.I knew I had to give him the benefit of the doubt. I mean this whole situation was unusual and any normal person would act the same way. So as I sat on
The next three days flew by. Between two sudden work projects, I hadn't had much time to talk to Knox. We've been texting back and forth a bit but the two of us have been too busy to really talk about the upcoming trip to my home town. We leave tomorrow and there was still so much to do."Excited to go home tomorrow?" Leah asked, laying on my bed with her feet up against my headboard. She was suppose to be helping me pack but ever since she got here an hour ago she hasn't moved."Yeah and no.""Do you and Knox have your story down?" Despite the fact that she couldn't see me I shrugged. Moving from my closet to the suitcase on my bed I answered."Yeah somewhat. We haven't really had time to get all the details down but enough to hopefully pass the whole thing off.""Think your mom will see through it?" Leah questioned."I hope not. But its only for a few days. And with Knox's sister Olivia coming it should take some of the pressure off."
8 months later."It's okay don't panic! We can fix this! I just need some thread. Thread!""Here! I found some!""It's okay, it's okay. I got this."I stared down at Leah and she frantically kneels down to fix the tiny little tear in my wedding dress. I grinned at how panic-y she was when I was completely calm. You would think it is her wedding not mine."Leah calm down, its fine.""Don't worry Aubrey I fixed it. See can't even tell." She stood with a grin. I shook my head at her. Knowing it was better to just go with it I grabbed her hands and squeezed."Thank you." She beamed at me and squeezed my hands right back."You look gorgeous Aubrey." She didn't even give me time to respond back before she pulled her hands free. "I need to check on the boys and the photographer. I'll be right back!" With that Leah practically ran out of the room. For someone wearing he
One Year Later."Yes we are just about to leave.""Make sure you leave soon because traffic on the freeway is getting bad." My mom rattled off. I held the phone away from my ear as she kept going on about us leaving so we can get there in time for dinner."Mom." I interrupted her mind rant about the forecast predicting snow. "I need to get going.""Okay sorry. I'll see you guys in a few hours. Love you and be careful.""We will. Love you too." Finally getting my mom off the phone I tossed it on the bed to finish packing."Ready to go?" I was asked as I slid the last Christmas present in my suitcase. Standing upright I turned and grinned at my amazing boyfriend."Yeah just need to zip it up."Knox crossed the room and came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and planting a kiss to the side of my temple."Excited to go home and see your family.""Yeah it's been a little while." Its been a good 5 months since I l
Before I knew it was time to head back home. Knox and Olivia needed to head back to get their store back open and I had to get back to finish my project for my promotion. As much as I wanted to stay I knew I couldn't.Being back home was exactly what I needed. I needed to come back to face my fears as cheesy as it sounded. In a way this brief visit back helped me heal."Come back soon okay?" My mom sniffed as she pulled me into the 10th hug since we came downstairs."I will, I promise." I already made a promise that I would come to visit more often. I couldn't go that long again without coming home."Let me know when you get home. Be careful of the roads with the snow." My moms inner worry wart coming out. Pulling away I smiled."I will."I let mom attached herself to Olivia next as I moved towards Jackson. I pulled my dufus of a big brother into a hug."Be good.""I'm always good." He scoffed when he pulled away. I sent him a look. "You
The rest of Christmas flew by. When I finally joined everyone back downstairs it was time to make breakfast. No one questioned where Knox and I were but the knowing look that Jackson gave me made me flip him off which only made him laugh. After breakfast we spent most of the morning sitting around. Sophie and Charlotte played with their endless toys, while the rest of us drank more coffee and talked. We talked about everything and anything and we even brought up stories about dad. Stories that made us all laugh despite the ache that he wasn't here to enjoy this day with us.It had started to snow a bit earlier so around noon everyone bundled up and went outside. And true to Christmas fashion an all out snowball fight started. No one was safe as we all, including my mom, threw snow at one another. We were all yelling and laughing so hard I wouldn't be surprised if the neighbors could hear us.When I somehow hit Knox in the face I ran away laughing only for him to e
Kids! Time to get up! Lucas, Annie and the girls will be here in just a minute!"The sound of my mom's voice came through the door making me groan. I snuggled deeper into the warm body that I was pressed against."You all better be down here in 5 minutes!""Go away." I muttered. The body I was laying on moved as they chuckled making my head move along with it. "Stoppp. I'm trying to sleep." I whined."You really aren't a morning person.""No, now shush." With my eyes closed I brought arm up and moved it in the general direction of Knox's voice.Everything was quiet for a moment as I tried to go back to sleep but as soon as I started to drift off another knock sounded at the door."Aubrey get up." She knew me well enough that I would go back to sleep. "Aubrey!""Fine! We're coming." I shouted back."You do know its Christmas right? You shouldn't be grumpy.""Yeah, yeah put a sock in it." I grumbled as I slowly untangled my
You're family really does go all out on Christmas Eve." Knox said as soon as we got to my room for the night."I did give you a warning earlier."After Lucas and Annie won Pictionary, we moved to a game the girls could play. We ended up playing Uno, Old Maid and Go Fish for the next hour and a half until both parents announced it was time to take the girls home. They of course didn't want to leave but as soon as the word Santa was said they were out the door. The rest of us helped clean everything up, and by rest of us I mean Olivia and I, before we all decided to go to bed. No doubt my mom would be getting us up early for Christmas. We may all be well into our 20's but my mom still gets us up early to open presents. Plus Lucas and Annie already promised the girls they'd be over here first thing in the morning."I didn't think it would be this much." He held up the ugly sweater my mom fortunately let him take off soon after pictures."Don't deny it y
Okay this episode is dedicated to all those asking for double episodes, we caby do double but we are doing long episode for u guys. Happy reading......"I have a surprise for all of you!" My mom announced as she walked into the living room. All of us were sitting around warming up from being out in the cold all afternoon. We had just gotten back from the festival and were waiting for dinner to finish in the kitchen."Surprise us with what?" I questioned."You're about to find out." She went over to the tree and started pulling out wrapped presents and handing them out to everyone. At the sight of them I knew what she was doing. Once everyone had one, including Olivia and Knox who looked really confused, did she clap her hands."Okay open."All at once everyone ripped into their present, wrapping paper flying. Once I had mine open I looked inside and shook my head. Beside me Knox pulled his out just as I did. Holding it out in front of me I saw the
The four of us spent a good 2 and a half hours sledding. Each time we got back to the top Jackson would come up with some challenge for us all to do and even Knox did it.By time we were done we were all tired and our faces were bright red from the cold. But despite all of that the grins on all of our faces were worth it.Seeing how carefree and happy both Knox and Olivia looked made up for the fact that I couldn't feel my hands, feet or my face. I would do about anything to see the smile on Knox's face again. And judging from the look Olivia kept giving her brother she thought the same thing as me.As we made our way back to find the others we stopped to get coffee to try and warm us all up a bit more. The temperature was slowly dropping as the day slipped away.Jackson and Knox were in the middle of a conversation when something caught my eye. I tugged at Knox's hand as I came to a stop. He glanced over his shoulder at me in question as he paused mid-step
Merry Christmas Eve!" Mom yelled as Lucas and Annie walked through the door, followed by two loud 'Merry Christmas Eve'. I grinned from where I was at in the kitchen as I heard my two nieces."Get ready." I warned Olivia and Knox. "Three....two..." I counted down. As soon as I reached one Sophie and Charlotte came running into the kitchen."Bre!" They both yelled my nickname. I squatted down in time to catch both of their little bodies in hugs."Are you guys ready for Santa to come tonight?" I asked."Yes!!" They cheered."We wrote him a wetter." Sophie struggled to say."Oh wow you wrote him a letter." I made my eyes go big." And he replied?" They nodded their heads so fast I was worried they'd get whip lash. "As long as you two have been good girls he'll bring you everything you want." I tapped their noses and made them giggle. They moved away from me. Sophie going straight for Olivia and Charlotte went right for Knox, who scooped
