Iori sat down watching the rain drizzle outside through the coffee shop's front window. The place was quiet and the faint sound of music drifted over to her ears along with the occasional scent of roasted coffee beans creating an ambiance that put her mind at ease and stirred her desire to write. She slowly lifted her coffee mug to her lips and let the rich aroma coat her tongue and send a rush of energy over to her brain.
This was really the perfect setup to write the scene she'd been thinking about since that morning... If only she brought her laptop with her.
As she kept eying the street before her, she saw a person in a suit running through the drizzle, hopelessly trying to avoid getting drenched to no avail. She followed him with her eyes as he made his way to the cafe's door and swung it open making the bell at the top jingle announcing his entrance to the waiters and staff.
The waiter hurried over to him with a towel and the young man gave him a smile thanking him for it. Then his eyes scanned the coffee shop falling on her, he smiled at her, murmured something to the waiter, and made his way toward her.
"Sorry. I'm late. I know..." He said as a way of greeting and Iori smiled at him.
"It's okay, I was enjoying the solitude for a moment there,"
"Is that your way of saying that my presence wasn't really necessary?" he asked taking a seat in front of her and drying his hair with a towel,
"Not at all," Iori said with a smile and her brother chuckled shaking his head,
"And to think that I came here rushing from court..."
"I thought that you were in your office for the day,"
"Yeah, that was the plan, but there was a last-minute change..."
"Well, thank you for giving me some of your precious time dear brother. I am eternally grateful..."
"Yes, yes. As you should be..." He said thanking the waiter who came along with his coffee before he turned back to her, " So, what made you call me here in the middle of the week? Is there something that urgent that it couldn't wait for our weekly meeting?"
"Actually, I just want some legal advice about my contract with the company," Iori responded knowing that he would start worrying as soon as she said that.
"Is there a problem with it? I thought you were on good terms with the president..." Her brother said concern edging on his voice.
Haruki had always been overprotective of her. And he became even more so over the last few years. She had her hesitations about talking to him about her problems because she knew that he could overreact when it came to her sometimes, but she knew that she had to do it, she just needed to make sure that he didn't overreact...
"I wouldn't say good terms. I doubt anyone would say that they are on good terms with president Satoru Hiiragi..."
"He's an eccentric man I give him that. But, he's known to make results in the corporate world despite his unusual methods... Not to mention that he was the one who brought you back to writing, Iori..." Haruki commented referring to the huge effort the president had spent when he tried to convince Iori to write again.
"I know, and now he's using that very card to guilt into doing his bidding. Well, let's just say that I'm falling victim to his unusual methods..."
"Don't tell me that he came up with another crazy idea to boost your inspiration?" Her brother asked leaning forward in his seat coffee mug forgotten.
"Thankfully, it's nothing like that again. He had this bright idea of having me cowrite a book with another famous author. We don't get along well, that person and I. And we refused at first but the president reinforced the contract clause. So we met and it ended up working pretty well to both our surprise."
"Who's that author you have to work with,"
"It's Jun Kamikoi..."
"Oh," Haruki said leaning back with a small smile on his face,
"what's with that smile?" She asked her brother who was clearly hiding a smile
"Nothing, I was just thinking..." He responded sipping from his cup and avoiding her gaze with a clear curl on his lips.
"That creepy smile doesn't indicate 'nothing', why don't you tell me what you're thinking brother dearest..." Iori said with a pissed-off smile of her own that made her brother chuckle.
Annoying....
"No need to get all worked up over nothing. I was just thinking that it was unusual for you to openly acknowledge anyone when it comes to being a writer. I was sure that you hated his books. You even complained about him to Kaoru and I when you first met him..."
"I did?" Iori asked surprised at not remembering complaining about Jun to both her brothers, "It's true that we rub each other the wrong way. but when it comes to being a professional, I discovered that he can surprisingly be serious and we work together pretty well. As for his books..." Iori paused wondering whether or not to admit it, "As embarrassing as it is. It seems like I judged him without even giving him a chance..."
"Woah. that's a surprise!" Haruki said setting down his cup and watching her intently, " You rarely get like this with anyone, you're unusually emotional when it comes to him..."
"I am?" Iori asked stunned by her brother's comment. She wouldn't have said it that way. Did her brother mean that she lost her calm and rationality when it came to hun? That's impossible, there was something about him that annoyed her each time he tried to tease her but she thought that she didn't get riled up more than she would have if someone else acted the way he did...
"But, more importantly, if things are going well with this person. Why are you worried about your contract..." Haruki asked shifting the subject to its original direction
"I am not asking you this because I wanted to stop the book deal. I am asking this because I'm worried about something that he said in our last meeting. It feels like the president is planning something again and I want to be prepared just in case...
"*sigh*" "Twenty-three," Jun said not lifting his head from the papers he was reading. "Pardon?" Iori inquired "That was the twenty-third sigh you made since we started this meeting an hour ago. Do you hate working with me that much?" Jun said with a smile looking up at her and Iori fought the urge to say some witty comeback that would throw them into an eternal word spare that will never end unless one of their editors tried came along. Iori sighed again and then realizing what she did she looked up at him, "Twenty-four..." He said "Ugh, stop counting my sighs, will you? It's unnerving," "Well, it's better than suffering through them for another two hours without having any alternative to divert me from your clear disinterest in what we're doing..."Jun retorted "I am not disinterested," Iori said defensively "Oh? Could've fooled me..." "I really am not. I'm actually looking forward to starting thi
"Why did you say that you wanted me to be here for this meeting?"Iori's editor asked eying the menu that the waiter had left with them before leaving them alone in the rediculousely luxurious private room. The woman was looking at the menu as if it was going to grow legs and attack her. Which was no wonder, since one meal in this place would make irreparable damages to anyone's wallet. The only reason why Iori was here in the first place was that the president had been paying for all those luxuries."Don't worry, we're making Satoru-san pay for all of this because of the inconvenience he had been causing us," Iori said with a smirk and her editor gave her a weak smile putting her menu down."Honestly, only you two can get away with treating the president the way you do..." Kimiko Tachibana told her shaking her head hopelessly."Judging by the trouble he has been putting us through for the sake of his own whims I bet we deserve the special treatment from
Looking out the window into the view in front of him, Satoru Hiiragi smiled. He was in an extremely good mood today. His plan was going smoothly and everything was falling into place. Even though there was a slight detainment, it had been handled quite easily and now all he had to do was wait for the results. "Where is she? She should be here already," he told the young man sitting behind him "It seems like she hasn't been able to leave. There's still time so if she has to she can sneak out or we can use the emergency call trick..." Yusuke Kajima said eying his phone probably checking the text from his coworker. "She does need to hurry, otherwise this is going to be all for nothing..." Satoru said not really worried, he knew that Tachibana-san would find a way to slip out, he had made sure to I've her the right motivation to do so... "I will let her know, sir..." Kajima said typing away on his phone, then looking up just as Satoru was taking a s
"When did you two start dating?""Why were you keeping your relationship a secret?""Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers?"questions were tired as soon as the reporters were within earshot, Jun stood there wondering what would the best course faction be. They probably had to go back inside, but they were going to need help from the staff to storm them from entering the restaurant with them.there was a movement to his side and he looked at Iori to find her looking as pale as a white sheet of paper. she was slowly stepping back her eyes wide and fixed on the crows that were closing in on them. they were surrounding them now and Iori looked as if she was being chased by her wildest nightmare. She was terrified and somehow, Jun had the impression that the sight she was seeing through this crowd wasn't what he was seeing."Iori, hey, Iori..." He called out to her but she didn't answer.one of the reporters who reached th
they were there, they were all there surrounding her. she didn't have anywhere to run, there was nothing but the wall behind her and a mass of people surrounding her. No not people, a mass of monsters... Iori stood there transfixed as they spoke in front of her shoving some sticks at her. Something at the back of her mind she knew that she should know what those things are, she knew but she couldn't remember. Her fear was overtaking all her senses and even though all she could think about was running, her feet stood there rooted to the ground as a cold tremor overtook her body. She could hear a voice whispering close to her, was there someone who stood this close to her. Iori didn't know, she couldn't look. All she could see was the people running toward her, the monsters who were about to tear her apart again. A hand wrapped around her chest and she was gently pulled into a warm surface. The faint scent of sandalwood and the ocean waffled her nose and as the
"What if the world is taking them so long?!" Jun exclaimed slamming his hand down on the table. Iori sighed deeply finishing the game of solitaire on her phone. It had been three hours since they were trapped in the room and the restaurant had closed its doors for a good two hours since then. When they kept calling their editors they got excuse after another and when they tried to get one of the staff to give them a lift the manager had insisted that no one had a car. He even couldn't call a taxi for them because of the crowds that seem to be still waiting for them outside. It was eleven o'clock and the two of them were already tired. As they kept waiting they decided to get some work done, but none of them felt like writing with the obvious reality that even the book was one of the president's schemes. To be honest, Iori was very tempted to nullify the contract and say to hell with the consequences. Her phone rang and she peeked at the screen to find
"And we're back to where it all started..." Jun said as he stood there watching the door in front of him, "That would make a great first sentence in a book..." Iori commented standing beside him. They were both eying the office door as if they were waiting for it to magically open itself. None of them was ready to face what was inside. Or rather, WHO was inside. Neither of them had barely gotten any sleep. Jun had a hard time sleeping thanks to all the ups and downs he went through all day long. He was already a light sleeper and with the energy still pumping through him, it was harder than usual to shut down his mind long enough to fall asleep. As he kept twisting and turning in bed, he could hear Iori quietly moving around in her room next door. Although he knew that they were both probably weren't going to get any sleep, they could get some work done, but, something stopped him from knocking on her room's door. Iori had been standoffish and
"Oh, that's rich..." Iori leaned back with a small chuckle, "What do you take us for Satoru-san? Do you think this is funny?" "Not at all, my dear. In fact, I'm as serious as a heart attack..." He responded the smile disappearing from his face, "You know that no one is going to believe you two aren't in a relationship right? The public is too convinced of your compatibility, they're already making you out as the perfect couple, and the book announcement is only going to make them ship you two together even more. You do realize this. even if you deny it, this is going to be what they think of you. In the world's eyes, you two are already dating whether you want it or not..." "And I'm sure you did nothing to solidify that image..." Iori said her ire growing as she listened the president "I've always thought that you two would make a good pair. I see that you're not resisting working together anymore" "Not that you gave us any choice, old m
