He's here already?, I looked at myself one last time in the mirror and took a deep breath. “I've got this" I said, and smiled at myself. I rushed out to get hold of the menu book, while I waited for him to enter the building. Oh my God! Is this supposed to be a human? He looked like a Greek god, like he had just walked out of some human magazine cover. His face was dashingly handsome, his dark green eyes were very sharp and piercing. He could hypnotize one with just a stare. I felt my heart go wild in my chest, as I felt myself under his dominance. He was putting on a tailored charcoal grey suit, with a crisp white dress, and a black silk tie. His shoes were polished black leather with a sleek design, he was putting on a luxurious Patek Phillipe watch. His outfit matched with his appearance exuding sophistication, luxury, and power. “What is wrong with me?” I rubbed my temple, and tried as much as I could to put myself together. “Welcome, Mr Ethan Williams, we're thrilled to have your presence here, what can I get started for you?" I said, trying to sound as professional as ever. A young handsome looking man stood by him, and one could tell that he was an assistant. “I’ll have a cotardo, made exactly to my specifications. I expect perfection, nothing less” he said, his gaze on his phone without sparing me a glance, and I arched my brows taking note of his precise order. “Of course sir, that'll be a cortado with 3:5 espresso to milk ratio, made with Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans, and a dash of cinnamon on top.” I said, maintaining eye contact, showing confidence and assertiveness. “See that it's perfect, I do not tolerate mistakes” I could see his furrowed brows hinting at displeasure and annoyance. He had quite a good taste, not everyone knew about this blend of coffee. I must say I was quite impressed by his specific request, he really had a thing for coffee. “Coming right up Sir," I said, with a smile, bowing my head slightly. I made sure that there were no mistakes in crafting his coffee, and I headed back to his table with the coffee in less than 10 minutes. Suddenly his phone rang, his voice cold and intimidating as ever. “What do you mean by that Mason? See that everything goes as planned, I do not care about the numbers.” I placed the cup of coffee on the neat small round table made of dark polished wood, with a subtle sheen on it. “Here's your cortado Sir" I said, avoiding his eyes. He took a sip, his expression changing, and he nodded in approval. “This is acceptable.” he said, his facial expression cold, and his demeanor stoic. “It's my pleasure Mr Williams," I said, with a slight bow. Yeah, I'm a skilled barista, and I've worked here for more than three years now. I stood some distance away from him, watching how he took sips from the coffee cup with no expression on his face. The few customers who were already in the coffee house before he arrived stole regular glances at him, but he didn't even bulge. Interesting! I stood at a spot waiting for Mr. Williams to finish up with his cortado. Suddenly, I began to feel jittery, my view slowly became blurry, my head began to spin, I opened my eyes wide trying to control myself but I couldn't, the dizziness came up on me as a wave, and just before I could put myself together to leave that spot, my legs began to twitch, slowly I began to lose my balance, but before I could fall to the ground, I felt a firm hand hold me. My vision was blurry, I tried to look up to see who it was, the face was familiar, it looked like the man I just served a cup of cortado. Slowly I was losing consciousness, but I could hear distant voices “What's going on here? What happened to her? Call the ambulance! No, the ambulance will take time now, Get my car!..…” I could hear the chattering voices from a distance, until I could no longer hear anymore. **** Beeping sounds of machines were beginning to deafen my hearing, “Where are my?What happened to me?” I tried to raise my head, but the sharp pain in my head made me lay down.” “Mi amigo! you're awake!” I heard Lindsay say as she beamed with a sad smile. “I heard what happened to you, and I decided to rush over here immediately, how are you feeling now?" She said, holding my hands as her eyes grew misty. “I'm fine Lindy, you don't have to worry, I think it's the pregnancy hormones." I managed to say. “Preg… you're pregnant Soph, how do I not know this?!" Lindsay blurted out with a pointed face. Gosh, I forgot to mention that part to her yesterday, how did I forget? I rubbed my temple as I stared at her. “I'm sorry Lindsay, it slipped my mind yesterday, I was just filled with the pain from Liam, that I forgot to tell you.” I'm pregnant Lindy. This was the surprise I wanted to give to Liam on our wedding anniversary, but…” I was saying, and tears brimmed my eyes. “It's fine, Mi amigo, you don't have to cry about him okay?" she said, caressing my hair. "I'm always here for you, Mi amigo. I can't wait to be a godmother and a big aunt” Lindsay said, standing up acting she was carrying a baby in her arms. “I couldn't laugh, because my head was aching. Lindsay can be so dramatic, I can't stop loving her. A slight knock came from the door, and a young doctor came in putting on a white coat. I checked if his name was imprinted on his coat, yes, it was. ‘Dr Asher’. What's up with me and checking out their names! Silly! “Miss Sophia, you will be discharged tomorrow, your bill has been settled, and you've been asked to stay away from work for at least two weeks.” The young doctor said, trying to make sure I understood him. He was about to leave, when I called his attention back, I managed to sit up, but he gestured to me to stop trying. “Dr Asher, can I know who brought me here, and also who settled the bill?.”Sophia “Uhmmm, no, I can't, you don't have to worry about that Miss Sophia, all you need now is a lot of rest.” The initial hesitation in his voice made me think he was asked not to say a word. “But… I tried to say, and before I could put my words together, he already left the ward room. Great! “You don't seem to have a trace of memory of who could have possibly brought you here Soph?” Lindsay asked, looking deep into my eyes as if she wanted to read my mind. “No, I can't seem to put together anything right now Lindy” I winced in discomfort and frustration, the pain in my head intensified the more I tried to put in place the things that happened to me before now. It came as dim flashes, I tried to gain control of myself, as I laid down and drifted to deep sleep. Next morning I squeezed my eyes open, as the buzzing sound from my phone woke me up, “Who in their right senses would want to talk to someone this early!" I turned and grabbed my phone, because this was the
—Sophia I don’t seem to remember stepping out of the clinic. I only remembered the door clicking shut behind me. The cold air slammed into my chest like a punch. My legs kind of... stuttered. Like they wanted to walk but forgot how. Everything felt off. Too loud. Too bright. The sun was just right there, shining so bright in my face, and I had the urge to scream at it. How could you shine just like that? Like everything’s fine. Like the world didn’t just punch a hole through my ribs. My hands found the railing. Gripped it like it could hold me together. I was shaking—like, whole-body shaking. But it wasn't cold. It was the... the name. Still ringing in my ears. Ethan Williams. I couldn’t breathe right. I couldn’t think. Ethan. Freaking. Williams. My stomach twisted. I felt it. Not nausea. Not hunger. It was deeper. A full-body ache. Panic laced with disbelief and something else I didn’t have a name for yet. I pulled out my phone. It took me three tries. My fingers weren’t work
— Ethan I walked into my penthouse, I took off my tie, in a manner like it was choking me. Maybe it was. Everywhere was quiet—too quiet, that even a pin drop could be heard clearly. The lights were off, not that the place was dark either, but I enjoyed its solemnity. The city felt alive from the view of the floor-to-ceiling windows, the horns of cars, and noise from people that moved about, but here, it felt dead. Exactly the way I'd been feeling right inside of me ever since that night. I tossed my keys on the counter. They clattered louder than expected. Or maybe everything was louder now. Sharper. Like the world wouldn’t let me forget how on edge I was. I walked to the bar, pulled out a glass, poured whiskey without looking. Didn’t care how much. I took a sip, then another. It burned, but not enough. Nothing burned enough these days. The worst part? I didn’t even know why. Scratch that. I did. Sophia. The girl at the café. The girl with eyes that looked like they’d see
—Sophia After the visit with Ethan, everything seems blurry. He had left without saying another word, without even sparing a glance, and yet, something was not right, I couldn’t shake off that feeling . It wasn’t just the sudden tension in his eyes, or the coldness that lingered in his absence—it was a nagging sense of inevitability, like the calm before a storm. Everything had changed. I had no doubt about that. I could feel the weight of the situation bearing down on me every second, every breath. But what was I supposed to do now? How could I control this new, unfamiliar reality? The baby inside me seemed to grow with every passing hour, its presence so real now that I couldn’t ignore it. I wasn’t sure how to feel anymore. I wasn’t sure about anything anymore. Lindsay never gave up on checking in, the more I appreciated her, I felt like a shell of myself. I could see the eagerness in her to help, but she didn’t understand. No one could understand—not really. The baby i
—Sophia I didn’t sleep. Not really. I laid there all night—my eyes open, staring at the ceiling like we were having a conversation. But it just stared back. Quiet. Cold. No comfort in it. Every few minutes, I’d turn over, shift, try to breathe through the panic rising in my chest, but it never left. Would I even be able to meet him like this?My heart bled with unseen blood, as I felt like it was being strangled from the inside out. I had less than an hour before I had to be at his office. Ethan. Just his name made my stomach twist. I hadn’t even picked an outfit properly—just threw something on, layered it with a coat, and tried not to look like I was falling apart from the inside. I looked in the mirror before leaving and hated what I saw. Eyes puffy, skin pale, mouth flat. My hair wouldn’t behave, and no matter how I tried to fix it, it kept slipping back into something wild. But I couldn’t be weak today. I couldn’t look like someone he could walk all over. I skipped breakfas
—Ethan They say time doesn’t wait for anyone. Maybe it doesn’t. But it sure as hell lingers when you’re trapped in a moment you don’t want to live in. I was lost in thought as I stared out of the floor-to-ceiling window of my office, I sighed deeply, I took my gaze to the dark blue skyline of Manhattan looking as cold and distant as I felt inside. The cup of coffee in my hand had gone warm. My hand suddenly felt numb, as I held on to the cup for so long. I wasn't in the mood for coffee. I wasn’t in the mood for anything. My mind was still stuck in that room—Sophia standing in front of me like a damn storm I didn’t see coming. Defiant. Angry. Terrified. She looked at me like I was the villain in her story. Maybe I was. But I didn’t have time to think about her, or the child she was carrying. Because the real storm was about to arrive. As if on cue, the familiar knock came—sharp, commanding, like always. “Come in,” I said, dropping the cup of coffee on the saucer, already braci
—Sophia I didn’t go home after I left his office. I wandered the streets of New York like a ghost in my own skin. The cold bit at my fingers, but I didn’t feel it. My mind was numb, replaying Ethan’s voice again and again—*Sign the papers, Sophia. I’m not asking anymore. I wasn’t just upset. I was wrecked. I didn’t cry. Not on the subway. Not when I pushed open the door to my apartment. Not even when I sat on my bed, still wearing the same coat, staring at nothing. Because the tears had dried up. All that was left now… was rage. Quiet, buried rage. Who the hell did he think he was? Marching in, throwing a contract at me like my child was a damn business transaction? I should hate him. But somewhere deep inside, under the anger, under the panic… there was something else. Something that terrified me even more. Curiosity. About him. About what made a man like that so cold, so calculated, so willing to take everything and give nothing back. I didn’t know why I cared. Maybe becau
—Ethan It wasn’t the glass of scotch that kept my hands shaking. I’d dealt with billion-dollar mergers, asset bleeding lawsuits, and boardroom coups where one wrong sentence could cost me everything. But none of those had ever made my chest feel this tight—like something inside me was fraying, pulling apart thread by thread. I couldn’t stop thinking about Sophia. The look in her eyes when she said, “You can't control my life.” God. It was like someone had pierced me a knife directly to my chest. I wasn’t even mad she stood up to me. I was… thrown. I’m not used to being defied—especially not like that. Especially not by someone who had every reason to play it safe. But she didn’t. She stood there, trembling, pregnant, fragile-looking as hell… and still refused to back down. Like some wild, cornered creature refusing to die quietly. And I don’t know what that did to me, but it did something. The contract was still untouched on my desk. Blank signature lines staring back at me like
Sophia Is everything okay with you? He asked, and I nodded and beamed a fake smile. I tried to remove the thought from my mind that the only reason he would bring me here was just because of his child, not that he had any genuine feelings for me.I felt his gaze on me, as I ate slowly. “Why are you not eating?"He kept quiet and didn't say a word, but instead he continued staring at me “Is there something on my face?" I said, touching my face.He chuckled, but before I could look him in the face, his expression went back to normal, cold and devoid of any expression. Was I mistaken? I clearly heard him chuckle, I've never seen him smile or laugh, and I don't know why but I wish I could see him smile some day. “Focus on finishing your food, Sophia" his words brought me out of my thoughts, and I nodded.I picked up my cutlery to start eating, but I just felt bad about this place. I was anxious, but couldn't tell the reason. “Are you sure you're okay?” I looked at him surprised, did h
EthanWhat was she doing with Nicholine? I already warned her about mingling with the maids, they were only paid to serve here, and no close relationship of any kind is to be formed with them.“What were you doing with Nicholine?” I asked, feeling a bit upset with what the other maids told me. “Oh that! you said we were going for a dinner date, so she was helping me pick up some nice clothes. I was confused on which one to select, so I called her to help. She's my personal maid, you know." She said, and I scoffed.I walked towards her briskly, each step I took made her flinch, I finally got close to her, since I was taller than her, I hovered over her, staring deeply into her beautiful hazel eyes, I brought my face closer to hers, feeling her rapid breath fan my face. Was she always nervous whenever she was around me?Why am I beginning to feel attached to her, to the extent that I don't want anyone to be seen around her? I pushed the strands of hair blocking her face and tucked it
Sophia I heard a knock on the door, Mr Williams wouldn't knock before entering his room, so who could that be? I stood up to answer the door, and I saw Nicholine and one of the guards standing outside and holding two big boxes.“And what is this?" I asked with a confused expression on my face.“The boss has sent this for you ma'am” Nicholine said, stretching her hand. He said we should bring the packages to you, "the guard added, and I nodded.I collected the bags from them, and was curious to find out what was in it. The boxes were sealed, and boxes like this are usually from luxury brands, which often contained luxury clothes, bags, and shoes. “We'll take our leave ma'am"I opened the boxes to check what was inside. The first box contained high heels, although not so high. The second box had a beautiful silver purse that was a limited edition. I opened the third box, and there was a beautiful red gown that stopped below my knee. All these items were limited edition, and getting
Sophia “We'll be going on a dinner date tomorrow night, do well to prepare yourself" Mr Williams said, before leaving the room. I couldn't help but reminisce over the way he held me and I blushed hard. Even though it was just a fake marriage, and even though deep down I still wished he would fall in love with me, so that we could raise this beautiful soul growing inside of me together. I went downstairs to grab some snacks to eat, as I was about entering into the kitchen, I found Nicholine cutting some vegetables, but what held me back was the conversation they were having. “I've never seen Mr Williams this calm before, I guess his losening up a bit"“It's the young miss doing, ever since she came, I noticed some difference in the way he behaved, even though he might be acting all mean sometimes, but you won't compare it to the time the previous young miss cheated on him and every single one of us had to face the other side of him, as if it were our fault.”"I really hoped his da
SophiaThe drive back home was awfully quiet. I took my gaze to the window, and I suddenly envied the people who were having a walk or taking a bus to their respective homes. The car was really suffocating, and I didn't know why my heart was just racing uncontrollably, was it because of the way I found myself this morning. Gosh, I feel really embarrassed, I must have been a bad sleeper last night, how come I was laying on his chest? I don't like this feeling. If I had superpowers, then I'd disappear and be lying comfortably in my room right now.I stole glances at the man who was as cold as ice beside me. He was busy with his Ipad, and I realized he was truly a workaholic. Which normal person would love to work on weekends? Would he even have time for his own family? I couldn't help but admire his composure. Why do billionaires often seem to be this way, even though not all of them but at least the major ones I've seen. Mr Williams has a powerful aura, anyone who stays around him w
EthanI was just left out in the conversation as if I wasn't even existing, I watched the duo getting along, will that even be necessary since we'll be divorcing soon?“Grandpa, please can we have dinner already?” I said interrupting the conversation.“Can you leave me to have a chat with my grand daughter- in-law, she'll soon be giving me a great grandson soon.”“Fine," I said, as I shrugged and brought out my phone from my suit pocket.“So, my dear, let's continue from where we stopped," he said, patting the back of her hands.“I grew up in Eastern City, I moved over to the Southern city after I lost my parents in a tragic accident while I was eight years old, I was the only one that survived, then I was adopted by my foster family who raised me. I work in one of the biggest Coffee houses in the Southern city.” Sophia faced grandpa after saying, I felt touched where she said she lost her parents, we both have similar tragic events.“Oh dear, I'm so sorry for your loss. SophiaI was dressed in a floor-length, strapless, fitted emerald light-green evening gown. A tiny hand-beaded design along the hem, and neckline, giving it a touch of glamour and perfection. A pair of delicate ankle-strappy silver stiletto high heels. My hair was packed in low bun hairstyles, with a curly part that fell to my face, adorned with delicate, sparkling hair pins. I wore a matching pair of beautiful dangling chandelier earrings, and a silver necklace and bracelet that had similar designs. I had very light make-up on my face, since I wasn't a fan of heavy make-up, and it was perfect. “You look so adorable ma'am," Nicholine was not just a maid, but her creativity in hair styling and fashion sense, gave me an impression that she was more."Thank you Nicholine, I never knew you had so many talents” I smiled at her through the dressing mirror and she blushed."Please don't flatter me,” she blushed even more."Mr Williams is never going to take his eyes off you Sophy," She sm
EthanAn incoming call from my Grandfather, what does he want this time? I stared at my phone, thinking of whether to pick it or not.“Old master, what do you want this time again?". I said calmly, even though I knew what he wanted to say."You little rascal! Do I still have to beg for you to bring my granddaughter-in-law for me to see what she looks like and get to know her better? For crying out loud she's carrying my great grandson.”His husky voice rang through my ears, and I put the call on speaker preventing it from going directly to my ear."Old master, you know I'm a busy man" I mean what's the need of you meeting her when I'm planning on divorcing her in the next one year and nine months? I actually thought I said that to his hearing, he doesn't have to know this or he'll get a heart attack. “I'm inviting the both of you for dinner tomorrow, and please do not refuse my offer, we'll be using my private house, so you don't have to get into a fight with anyone.” I considered
