“Kneel.”
The command was abrupt, spoken on a faint condescending whisper. Liora instantly sank to the floor. Cursed with an Omega designation from birth, her wolf seemingly had no will to resist the tauntings of her trainer, Nerissa. It was a daily routine: Nerissa would drag her before the other female omegas and use her as an example as to how they should behave- with complete and unquestioning obedience. Liora was the only one of her kind in Pack Arcadia. All the other omegas were assigned their designation at age 12. All except her. She was born an omega.Born to submit. To do everything her superiors wanted without question whenever they pulled rank. As a result, most of the other wolves in her pack took advantage of her every chance they could. Similar to what Nerissa, a second-rank gamma wolf- was doing to her that very moment.“Good doggy,” Nerissa chuckled, looking down at the top of Liora’s dark brown head. Her blue eyes gleamed coldly while the rest of the omegas watched on in silence.Nerissa continued with her lecture, “A good dog knows when to obey its master.”Liora stared down at her upturned palms, her lavender eyes blinking back the evidence of her frustration. Scratch that, she was more than frustrated. Liora was absolutely sick and tired of Nerissa and everyone else who treated her like shit.“I’m not a dog. I’m a wolf,” She whispered to herself.Nerissa heard what she said and laughed. She dove a hand into Liora’s thick curls, yanking her head up, “What did you just say?”“You heard me. I might be an omega, but I’m still a wolf.”“You’re whatever I say you are!” Nerissa growled, her claws extending to scrape against Liora’s tender skull, “Today I say you’re a dog. Now be good and kiss my boot.”The rest of the group shared uncertain glances. Nerissa was supposed to be teaching them how to be good omegas, but all she did was torture Liora. What’s worse is that none of them couldn’t really do much about it. They were the lowest in the pack. They had little say or power, living at the mercy of everyone else.Liora’s eyes glowed and she fought with all her might but was unable to prevent herself from bending over. Just as her lips were about to touch Nerissa's boots, a sharp voice came from the back of the class.“I think you’ve made your point, Nerissa.”They made a path for him as Thaddeus Wilderwood came to the front. The forest clearing suddenly became quiet as the first-rank Gamma scrutinized Nerissa from head to toe. He wasn’t just any random wolf. He was a legacy wolf from one of the 12 most powerful bloodlines in the Order of Lycaon. His forefathers literally helped to build the most powerful werewolf society in the Northern Hemisphere. For him to visit such a petty training class for omega females was no random occurrence.Something major was happening in the pack.Nerissa plastered a smile onto her face and bowed, “Gamma Wilderwood, it’s an honor to have you pop in to visit my class. Everyone, show your respects.”All the omegas sank to their knees in perfect rows, bowing their heads. “Hello, Gamma Wilderwood.”Liora flared her nostrils, her fingers digging into the grass as she kept her head down. The last thing she needed was to draw more attention to herself.“Relax, puppies,” He smiled ruefully, “I promise this won’t take long.”Out of the corner of her eye, Liora watched as everyone instantly became more lax, finding whatever position on the ground suited their comfort. Thaddeus stood beside Nerissa and made his announcement.“Tomorrow night is the Alpha’s birthday. One of you will be chosen and given to him as a gift.”Liora cringed as giggles and squeals lit up the clearing. Her best friend, Callie- shot her hand into the air, wiggling her fingers- just brimming with a million questions.“Yes, go ahead, pup.”“Are you going to choose now? What will happen to the omega that is chosen? Will they get to live with the Alpha? He’s sworn never to take a party pup- is this happening now, because he has no mate?”“Callie!” Nerissa snapped, earning a frightened squeak from the curious redhead. “One question at a time. Don’t annoy Gamma Wilderwood.”He waved his hand, “That’s quite alright. To answer your question, Callie, tonight you will all compete in a series of tests to determine if you’re an omega worthy to be given to our Alpha. You’ll get ample time to prepare yourselves. The one that is chosen, will be given to the Alpha and be a part of his household. A privilege I’m sure each and every one of you wanna get your pretty little hands on. ”Callie nodded repeatedly before sinking to the ground with a long wistful sigh. Not me, Liora thought to herself. It sounded too good to be true. They were being trained to become ‘Party Puppies’, omega wolves who were sent off to mateless pack leaders to fulfill their sexual desires and anything else they wanted. She’d much rather become a mindless beast and wander the forest till thy kingdom comes. Liora was so deep in thought that she didn’t notice Thaddeus walk up to her until he propped a finger under her chin and tilted her head up.“So, you’d rather become a mindless beast than be a puppy for our Alpha?” He questioned softly.Liora gasped, mentally kicking herself for forgetting that Gamma Wilderwood could read minds. Immediately, she shifted her thoughts to that of a calm cool forest night. He smirked, observing her peculiar lavender eyes. He didn’t want to play favorites, but he was definitely looking forward to seeing the born omega compete. As he turned to leave, Thaddeus decided that he would keep a close eye on Liora.“Don’t punish her, Nerissa. I was the one who went meddling in her thoughts. I expect all of you to be ready for tonight.”As the class parroted their goodbyes, Liora watched him leave with a worried expression on her face. She was a born omega. Everyone already knew she was the best despite the taunts and teasing. Her gracefulness and ability to render complete submission went unmatched. Her classmates didn’t stand a chance. She had to find a way to avoid the test. She had to find a way to leave.Tonight.Long after the class dispersed, Liora sat near a small pond to be by herself. She wriggled her toes in the deep green water as she plotted how she would escape the camp. Her only shot was during the preparations for the test.Everyone would be running around like headless chickens, she could use the chaos to sneak away. Yes, then after that, Liora just needed to slip past the perimeter guards and she would be home free.“Whatever you're planning, it’s not going to work,” Callie pounced at Liora, giving her a soft hug before dropping her head into Liora’s lap.Liora raised a brow, "How do you know I’m planning something?”“Puh-lease,” Callie rolled her eyes, “I know you Li. You’re itching for a way out of the test tonight. Everyone knows you’re the perfect omega.”“Ugh, don’t remind me. I’d happily give up my designation to someone else just so I don’t have to see Nerissa’s obnoxious face every damn day.”They both settled into a comfortable silence. Callie studied Liora’s lavender eyes, a stark contrast to her deep purple ones. She frowned, “You’re going to try and run away, aren’t you?”It was more of a statement rather than a question. Liora’s expression said it all, “Yes. And you’re going to help me.” ⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜Liora stared at herself in the bathroom mirror, tilting her head from left to right. They gave her a pretty white dress that brushed her knees with a bit of flare. It was cute, hugging her curves in all the right places. The V neckline made her throat look even more delicate.Too bad it would be ruined. Liora could only be fast enough to slip the perimeter guards if she transformed into her wolf. Most bitten wolves had to wait on the full moon, or life and death circumstances, but because she was born and not bitten, it came easy to her.“Fire!” Someone screamed, “There’s a fire in the store room!”Liora grinned. That was no doubt Callie’s handiwork. As the alarm rang out along with screams of melodramatic terror, Liora quietly slipped through the cabin window. The soft grass cushioned her landing as she got into position to transform. Her lavender eyes glowed in the night as her bones shifted, short brown hair rippling along her arms and legs. Sharp teeth jutted out of the corners of her mouth, jaws breaking and mending.Timed slowed, Liora blinked and she was suddenly running forward in her wolf form. She ran eastward through the forest, weaving between the tall trees. This was the only section of the pack land that was the least guarded.Everyone would be distracted by the fire and come running. That would give her the opening she needed.‘Almost there,’ Her wolf huffed in excitement, her freedom was literally 20 yards away. Once she made it across the lake, her scent would disappear and they wouldn’t be able to track her. Power surged into her legs and she leaped towards the dark waters.BAM!A crippling blow connected with her body and she crashed to the side, skidding until a tree broke her fall. Liora groaned, eyes blurring as she struggled to stand, to see what hit her.Standing a few feet from her was a large brown wolf with glowing blue eyes.It was Gamma Wilderwood. He’d caught her.Shit.Before she could do anything, he pulled rank, letting out a ferocious growl.‘Yield!’ He commanded. Her wolf cowered, whimpering quietly. Liora pushed down the self-loathing she felt as her wolf receded and she returned to human form. She remained crouched, her long hair covering her nakedness. She peered at him through her hair as he assumed a similar position.“I see you weren’t kidding about becoming mindless,” Thaddeus jutted his chin towards the lake, “Mindless beasts are our mortal enemies. Do you really mean to become an enemy of the pack- of the Alpha that has sustained you until now? Are you that ungrateful?”“Sustained? Ungrateful?” Liora scoffed, “I am a born omega. Most of the pack has better regard for the dirt than they do for me. I’m a party pup. I’m not sustained. I’m a fucking slave. So yes, I’d rather be mindless.”Thaddeus' gaze became dark, “The mindless beasts killed our Alpha’s entire family. They are the reason why he has darkness on his soul.”Liora paled. She always heard that the Alpha was troubled, but she didn’t know the extent or what caused it. She trembled as her superior continued speaking.“He is our great and powerful Alpha, but when the darkness overpowers him, he is a monster. He almost killed one of his maids last week.”Liora’s eyes widened in realization, “That’s why you wanted to gift him a party pup? To appease his darkness?” “We needed an omega to help quell his destructive episodes.” Her stomach dropped as his eyes narrowed. They were actually going to risk an omega’s life just to appease the Alpha. Omegas really meant nothing to the pack. When push came to shove, they were disposable. Expendable.Just when she thought that his lecture was over, he said the one thing that made her blood run cold. “Since you’ve decided to spit on the efforts of our pack, there will be no competition. You will be given to our Alpha.”Ronin placed his family emblem and seal flat on the table so his fellow council members could see it. There was no mistaking the brilliant white gold plaque featuring a formidable wolf. It seemed frozen in time as it charged forth from the image. It was a symbol that he, Ronin Ashenthorn, was the helm of not just Pack Arcadia, but the entire Order of Lycaon. His bloodline was a legacy of warriors who paved the way for all the many privileges that the elite werewolf society now had.Privileges that allowed even his council to be bold enough to dictate to him what to do. With the seal out in the open, everyone paled. Obviously, they had crossed the line with the suggestion, but it was too late to take it back now.“What did you just say to me, Thad?” Ronin stroked the light stubble on his chin, “Did you just tell me that I ‘need’ to get a party pup?”“The absence of your Luna counterpart for so long has caused your wolf to become more unstable,” Thad leaned forward, resting his elbows
Liora tried with all her might to pull her arm away from Thaddeus’ grip but the stupid thing would not obey. Her feet walked on autopilot as he carted her back into the camp. Back to being everyone’s little bitch. Or more specifically, the Alpha’s chew toy. She had no idea the Alpha was so troubled. What’s worse is that Gamma Thaddeus threatened that she would be given to him. If only she had run a little faster. As they walked through the omega camp everyone looked at her with disdain and condemnation. It took a few moments for her to realize that the Gamma was taking her to the detention cells. There’s no way she would be able to escape now. “So you’re just going to send me to my death with no remorse?” She quipped. “Don’t be so dramatic,” He huffed in reply, gesturing to the guards to open one of the cells. There was someone huddled in the corner. She quickly realized it was Callie. Callie’s head whipped up at the jangling of the keys and her heart sank when she saw Liora.
Ronin stalked towards his mate, his eyes black as sin. For once in a very long time, he and his wolf were on the same page about one thing. Biting this omega and knotting her right fucking now. Liora couldn’t cross the distance fast enough and all but launched herself into the arms of her Alpha. He caught her, wrapping her slender legs around his waist with one hand and using the other to grab her hair and yank her head back. “Mate!” He rasped, “Yield!” Liora gripped his shoulders and exposed her neck in wild abandon. Ronin growled in satisfaction then dropped his head to bite into the racing pulse at her neck. Suddenly, he was yanked back and Liora was pried from his body. Caius held him by the collar of his tux while Thaddeus held Liora. “Let me go Caius or I’ll rip your throat out!” He growled. “Are you really going to do this in front of all your guests?” Caius hissed. Ronin paused and took stock of his surroundings. He was still in the ballroom at his party, and everyone w
Liora felt someone slapping her cheeks harshly when she finally regained consciousness. “Wake up, mutt,” Nerissa sneered. Liora opened her eyes and tried to recall what happened to her. When the memories came flooding back, she all but jumped off the bed.“The Alpha is my mate?!” She squeaked. Nerissa looked at her scornfully, towering over her until she had no choice but to sit. Her eyes darted around the lavish room but they were alone. She was cornered by Nerissa, no doubt to endure another round of torture.“Don’t get any ideas. He doesn’t want you.”Of course, he didn’t want her, she thought bitterly. Who would want an omega like her as a mate?“You’re weak,” Nerissa continued, “Pitiful. You are not fit to be a Luna. I’m glad our Alpha had the good sense to realize this before making this cosmic mistake permanent.”“Our Goddess doesn’t make mistakes,” Liora huffed. Her wolf was clawing to get back to her mate. It was sweet and sickening at the same time. She had never felt so m
It was a race against time to save Ronin’s life. The mansion had a fully equipped medical wing but was too far from the fighting pit. Instead, Ronin was brought to one of the many cabins used by wolves during long periods of training. Caius kicked open the door and heaved Ronin onto a wooden table in the center of the kitchen. A tall lanky Delta rushed in with a medical kit, Thaddeus and Lucien in tow. They surrounded Ronin, staring at the ghastly canyon that was carved into his chest. It was barely held together by Caius’s pale hands. Any deeper and they would be able to see his heart.“You have to remove your hands, Caius.”“Doctor Reynolds, I can’t.” His golden eyes glowed with pain, “ I think he nicked something major.”“Caius. The doctor can’t help if you’re in the way.” Thaddeus eyed the corners of the wound that showed minuscule signs of healing, “See? He’s already begun to heal.”Caius growled, feeling Ronin's heart fluttering against his palms, “Okay. On three.”A quick count
Liora knew where she was without having to open her eyes. The cold hugged her until her skin was taut with goosebumps, a thick musty odor wafting into her burning nose. She lay there for a while on the cold hard ground, grasping at the mangled thread of her bond. She reached out, searching earnestly. Liora’s body relaxed into the cold concrete as she felt Ronin on the other end. Thank Goddess– he was still alive. Barely, but alive. Her soles tingled as she got to her feet, reminding her of the ritual that nearly broke her. Seeing Ronin in his own blood rivaled that pain so much so that she checked out from reality. If she could guess, his wolf was against the whole thing and lashed out. Ironic that she found herself trapped alone in a dark cold cell. She felt utterly alone on that platform. None of the wolves tried to stop the ritual or pleaded for her. Why would they? She was an omega. Expendable. Replaceable. “You’re awake, mutt?” A cold voice jolted her from her thoughts. S
“The Alpha has requested that you move into his den.”Liora squeaked, the tall glass cup she was holding crashed to the floor. Her heart leaped into her throat and her wolf chanted the delightful ‘M’ word between her two reddened ears. ‘Mate-mate-mate-mate-mate-’“Calm down, pup.” Thaddeus chuckled at Liora’s reaction to the news. “It’s hard not to intrude on your thoughts when you think so loudly.”“I’m so sorry,” She shook her head, gesturing to the broken glass, “I’ll clean this up right away.”“Don’t touch that. I can’t have you injured before we get to the mansion.” He waved her off, “ It’s a good distance from here so we have a car outside waiting to take you.”Liora couldn’t believe her ears. She was going not only to the Alpha's den but to his mansion?! If only Callie could see her now. The Alpha was messed up, not quite right in the wolf- but damn- she couldn’t suppress the excitement of seeing him again. It felt like ages since that awful day on the platform. She didn’t hav
Liora walked down the stairs in a daze as blood continued to drip from her neck. The hurtful words Alpha said to her repeated in her head over and over. ‘Lower staff. Nothing more.’ Nothing more. Nothing. She left a blood-red trail in her wake but she was in too much agony to care. No doubt they’d make her clean it later. She didn’t stop walking until she was back in the laundry room. Delta Rhonda, the Laundry Mistress, was hunched over a large sink. She diligently scrubbed the collar of a shirt with a toothbrush. She gaped in surprise when she saw the stream flowing down Liora’s arm. “Goodness child, what happened?!” Rhonda’s freakishly tall gait rushed over, whipping out a white hand towel to staunch the flow. “I’m so sorry I got blood on the laundry,” Liora’s voice cracked as she set the basket aside, leaning against the large granite counter built above the long row of washing machines and dryers. “Oh, hush child. Let’s get you cleaned up.” Rhona brought her over to the sin
They guided him through Alastor’s house towards a vast hall. A gazebo was erected in the center, the sides draped with sheer curtains. He could make out tiny details of her silhouette that filtered through.Lupine folk knelt all around, prostrating and weeping, many ripping the skirts of their deep blue robes. The Oracle sat near the entrance, rocking herself back and forth as she mumbled in Greek.Ronin stumbled forward, catching himself against the post.“I’m fine.” He shrugged off Lucien’s helping hand. He didn’t want it.Flipping the curtain aside, he dragged himself in. She lay on a bed of furs and flowers, dressed in a shimmering blue gown, a white rose crown nestled on her head. Her long hair was fanned out over her shoulders, framing the necklace around her neck, which no longer had light. Her hands cradled her belly, almost like she was still protecting their cub.“Liora,” Ronin choked, reaching his trembling hand towards her cheek. It was so cold. His knees gave way and he c
This could not be happening. It wasn’t real.It couldn’t be.She couldn’t be dead.Ronin denied it a thousand different ways inside his head. But her silent heart was too big of a truth for him to ignore. Liora was gone.He killed her.“den me timórises arketá?!” Haven’t you punished me enough? He howled at the moon, holding on to her body like an anchor keeping him from drowning. The colder her skin became, the deeper he sank.He couldn’t think about Maia, sobbing a few feet away. He couldn’t spare a second for Nikolai, who still hadn’t moved from his slumped position.“You can’t be dead,” Ronin coaked, stroking her cheek with trembling fingers. “I can’t do this without you, Liora. Open your eyes!” He touched her lids softly, willing them to pop open, for a blush of red to color her cheeks and for the blue hue in her lips to fade.Kaon, his wolf, recoiled deep into his subconscious, seeking a quiet corner to hide from the agony. Ronin would give him no reprieve.Ronin got to his feet
Liora cried softly into the crook of Nikolai’s shoulder as he carried her through the dense forest. She could feel the sorrow of the pack, hitting her in waves. So many were injured. So many dead.Who would be so cruel, showing no mercy to women and children? What manner of foe was this that drove them from their home?Liora wished she could snap her fingers and make it all go away. The most she could do now was to share in their pain and grief and send soothing words across the mind link.‘Everything’s gonna be okay,’ She resonated. ‘By the Goddess.’“Luna.” Nikolai’s voice sounded tight. Liora didn’t realize how close her lips had inched to his neck. She had no urge to bite him, but she could sense that he still craved it.“Sorry.” She eased away, wiping her eyes. “Can you put me down? I’d like to walk for a while.”“Walk to where?” Callie scoffed, giving Liora a pointed look. She looked way too comfortable perched over Alastor’s shoulder. “You can barely walk a yard with that ten-p
Liora’s lips pressed into a thin line as she watched Ronin go down the hillside. Fine. She turned to Maia, grabbing her hand tightly, “Find Callie. She’ll be hiding somewhere around the old cabins.”“Everything’s going to be fine, Luna.” Maia planted a kiss on her wrist. “I’ll come find you later. Let’s go, Lucien.”They ran to the treeline with Thaddeus and Derith close behind. Liora let Nikolai lift her into his arms as smoky tendrils curled around Enas and the Oracle. When the smoke cleared, they were courtyards of the Beta den. Lupine folk were rushing toward the left backwoods path tucked at the end of the rows of buildings. Guards directed the flow of people while monitoring the entrance gates for mercenaries.A hand lightly touched her shoulder and she jumped. When did the Oracle get so close?“Apologies, Luna. I didn’t mean to startle you.” Inclined her head. “Enas and I will go ahead first and assist Alastor’s pack in receiving the pliveíos.” The Oracle clutched Liora’s hand
Liora’s eyes popped open when she felt a strange sensation in her chest. It was as if a hot wax strip was applied and ripped off without warning. High off euphoria, closed her eyes again, not thinking too much of it.Fifteen minutes ticked by before she noticed that the incessant urge for lupine flesh was gone.It was... gone?!The first thing that came to her mind was to tell Ronin, but she couldn’t interrupt him. So, she did the next best thing.“Caius!” She elbowed him repeatedly, unable to contain her laughter.“Yes, Luna?” He looked at her through one lazy eye that widened in surprise. “Your eyes– they’re normal.”Liora nodded, “I can’t feel the curse in my bond anymore. It’s gone!” If her belly wasn’t so big, she would run out into the feel and frolic like a carefree cub. “How is this possible, Caius? Does that mean Ronin is cured too?!”“I’m the last person you should be asking,” He laughed. “This is a time of miracles. Better not look the gift horse in the mouth.”Light grey s
As the sun made its descent on the horizon, the lupine folk slowly started to fill the clearing. It started with one or two until the entire field was filled with silhouettes dressed in white robes. The adults lounged around in circles, talking animatedly, while the cubs frolicked and chased each other in vigorous play.Looking farther out, Ronin could see Gamma and Delta warriors standing along the perimeter fence, clad from head to toe in tactical gear. Naturally, he couldn't see the shadow assassins, but he was confident they would be well hidden and vigilant. The golden crown on his head felt too heavy as if he would crumple under the weight. Would he be able to wear it after tonight? Would he be worthy? He wasn’t sure. All he could do was count down the minutes until the Rites would begin and he could cure his mate once and for all.Ronin felt the air shimmer beside him. He didn’t have to look to know it was Nikolai. “Everything’s set?”“Yes Alpha, it is all in place according to
“How much of this are we telling them again?” Thaddeus asked as hurried to catch up with Ronin’s quick pace. Ronin cast a sidelong glance in his direction.“We tell them everything except about the curse.” Ronin paused at the entrance of the large boardroom, allowing Geneda to adjust his black silk tie. Brushing his assistant away, he flexed his shoulders and rolled his head to ease the tension in his neck. “They need to know the truth about our Origin so that we can enlighten the packs during the ceremony later tonight.”The attendants opened the double doors and Ronin strolled in with an air of confidence that he didn’t quite feel. All twelve members of his council were present, along with his Regents, their seconds in command, Grandmaster Platon from Lyklos Keep, Elder Enas, and the Oracle. They had moved a much larger table in to accommodate everyone, wide enough that he and Liora could sit side by side at the head of the table.Liora was already settled, dressed in a dark green of
Liora stared at him, drinking in every inch of his towering frame. Her cub leaped within her, kicking with excitement. She tried not to get hopeful but it was a reflex she could not control. For as long as they were bonded, she would have faith that they would find their way back to each other, no matter how long it took.“Get out, omega.” Ronin stepped to the side. Callie threw her a pitiful look before scurrying past him down the hall.“Is there something you need?” Liora waved him in. “I have to see Doctor Reynolds in a few minutes.”As he stepped over the threshold, Liora felt like he was sucking all the air and light from the room. Wanting to put some space between them, she shuffled towards the window, gently perching herself on the loveseat.“That won’t be necessary, I already told him you will be present at the rites.”Liora hummed. “Understood. Do you need a towel to dry off?”“What do you mean?”“Your hair. It’s dripping wet.” Not waiting for his response, she padded to the
“Liora, honey, what are you doing out of bed?” Callie’s voice was low and careful. Everyone spoke to her that way nowadays, as if any louder and she would shatter into a million unrecoverable pieces.Ronin beat them to it weeks ago.“I just wanted to stand for a bit,” Liora let the curtains slide back in place and let her friend guide her back to the bed. She’d hoped that Caius could get through to Ronin, but by the looks of it, nothing good came from their conversation.Holding the underside of her belly, she gingerly sat on the edge of the mattress. Callie settled beside her, reaching out to take her hand.“No.” Liora pulled back, throat thick with emotion. “Don’t comfort me. That makes it worse.” Hot tears pooled in her eyes and she swiped angrily at them. “Damnit! I’m so tired of crying.”“I cannot stand your tears, Luna.” Callie’s eyes went wide, filled with grief. “Please let me soothe you. The stress is not good for the baby.”“I said don’t!” Liora snapped. She knew Callie just
