Chapter Three
Hours later, Luna walked out of Justin’s company building and towards her parked car, waiting for her in the parking lot. Jaden opened the door to the backseat and Luna got in, she closed her eyes just as Jaden closed the door. She let out a breath she hadn’t even been aware she was holding, her breath coming out on a shaky tremble. After their little private reunion, Justin had called everybody back into the conference room and the meeting had progressed. All through the meeting, Luna could feel Justin’s eyes on her, even though she had been careful to not look at him. And she had had to remind herself every few minutes to breathe, when she realized she was staring at Justin’s assistant- who was laying out the objectives of the gala- with bated breath. She had almost jumped out of her skin when someone spoke beside her, and that had made her realize that she was on pins and needles throughout the entire meeting. But now it was over. Luna threw her head back on the headrest and opened her eyes to stare up at the top of the car. She had known, going in, that the first meeting with Justin wasn’t going to be easy. After all, it wasn’t everyday you came face-to-face with the man you once loved with all your heart. There was bound to be some heart shaking, some body igniting, some hand trembling. Luna knew that, and she had been prepared for it. Or at least, she had thought she was. But nothing had prepared her for the reality of it. She was still affected by him. Luna scoffed as that thought passes through her mind. She couldn’t believe she was still affected by Justin, after all these years. Although that had been part of the reason why she had carried out her little experiment of seeing Justin again. One had been to show him what she had made of herself over the years, to make him see that she hadn’t just wasted her life away after he left her shattered. That he hadn’t completely broken her. To also show herself all that, because she had felt like that was the last piece of the puzzle she needed to finally move on with her life. The other reason had been to see if he had the power he had over her six years ago, still. And that had been a private reason of hers, a reason she hadn’t shared even with her best friend. Today’s reunion had shocked her to very core. Because not only did he still affect her, but he still affected her strongly. Her body was still trembling minutes after she’d seen him. “Oh God,” Luna muttered to herself, covering her face with her hands. “Is everything all right, ma’am?” Jaden asked, closing the door as he got into the car beside her. Luna waved a hand to gesture his concern away without looking at him. “I’m fine,” she said. “Just drive.” At this, the driver in the driver’s seat started up the car and pulled smoothly out of Justin’s company’s parking lot. As the car moved seamlessly though the streets of New York, Luna’s mind replays her meeting with Justin over and over again. Moments later, they pull up in front of a high rise building, the driver navigates the car into the parking lot. Just then, Luna’s phone rings in her hand. She glances down at the name flashing on the screen, she swipes right on the call. “Hello,” she said. “Hey,” Rita, her best friend’s, voice, comes through the phone speaker. “How did it go? You still in the meeting?” Luna rubbed a hand over her forehead, feeling a tiny headache beginning to throb there. “No, we’re here, we actually just pulled into the parking lot. I’m coming up now.” “Okay, I’ll be waiting for you,” Rita said. Luna ended the call and sighed wearily as she turned her head and looked out the window of the car. And then as she looked up at the tall building, the glass windows gleaming in the daylight sun, the weariness that was starting to gather in her bones suddenly slipped away. The words Green-ish Foods were installed in big block letters across the front of the building, people-employees- walk in and out of the building. Numerous cars were parked in the parking lot, some bikes, some scooters. I did this, Luna thought suddenly to herself. I created this, I built a whole company from scratch. I am responsible for hundreds of people’s jobs, their livelihoods, the paychecks that feed their families. I did all that. And now, just because she’d met the man who broke her six years ago, again for the first time today, she’d suddenly forgotten about all of her achievements. Luna felt a stirring of anger at that, and determined, she shook off the lethargic feeling and opened the door, getting out of the car. She made her way towards the entrance of the building, Jaden behind her. She responded to greetings as she made her way to the elevator. Riding the elevator up to her office, Jaden went over the key points of the meeting with her. Moments later, the elevator doors slide open to reveal a hallway. Rita was there. The two women looked at each other, and an understanding passed between them. “Jaden, go organize the files,” Rita said to Jaden without taking her eyes off Luna. “Uh- wh- what files?” Jaden stuttered. Rita gives him a look. “Oh, oh, okay, I’ll just-” He disappeared. “I should have been there,” Rita started. “God, I shouldn’t have- I should have been there.” Luna shook her head. “It’s fine, you were needed here.” She looked at her best friend. “But, God, Rita, it was not easy. I am still attracted to him.” “Oh. That’s a problem,” Rita said. The two women started walking towards Luna’s office, arms intertwined. “Yeah,” Luna said. “A big one.”A week later.“So, looks like the damage control in San Andreas is the last thing on your to-do list for today,” Rita said jokingly.Luna looked up from her laptop to give Rita a dry look.“Yeah, it would have to be, now, wouldn’t it?” Rita gave Luna a pitying look. “I know, babe, I’m sorry.”“I’m telling you, that saying, ‘If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself’? It’s on point.”Rita gave a dubious look. “I’m not sure that’s a saying, per se.”“Ugh!” Luna explodes, slamming her hand on the table. “Those reps in San Andreas are going to hear it from me.”“Yeah, you get ‘em, babe,” Rita said in support. “Anyway, I think I have something that will make your trip a little easier. I booked a ritzy hotel for you to stay in, breakfast in bed and the whole deal. Now, do you love me, or do you love me?”Luna leaned back in her seat, the hint of a smile flittering around her lips as she looked at her best friend.“I do love you,”she said. “You’re probably the o
“Oh hell no!”Luna marched directly to Justin, who was standing beside a pla- no, not a plane, a jet. A private jet?! Woah. But that thought didn’t deter Luna’s strides as she marched up to Justin. Following his announcement, Matt had driven her to the private hangar, Justin’s private hangar, where the plane that was supposed to take her to San Andreas, was. Luna had only allowed Matt to take her there to confront Justin, nothing more. She stopped in front of him, her eyes narrowed as he turned away from the person he had been talking to, to look at her, all calm.“Hello, Luna,” he said, still all calm.“What the hell, Justin?” Luna demanded.Justin shrugged. “I don’t know what you mean.”“You know what I mean, don’t try and act dumb. What’s the meaning of you saying you’ll take me to San Andreas?”“I believe that was me offering to help,” Justin replied, his tone perfectly reasonable and patronizing, like he was talking to a child.Which just made Luna’s teeth set on edge
“I’m almost the restaurant. Yeah, I’ll see you soon.”Luna disconnected the call, she looked both sides of the road before crossing over to the opposite sidewalk. Seeing she and her sister’s and mother’s favorite restaurant just a few feet ahead of her, she quickened her pace towards. Her mom and sister were already seated at a table, one of the several ones outside. As Luna neared, Ashley, her sister, turned. Seeing Luna, she smiled and waved enthusiastically at her.“Hey!” Luna smiled and waved back. At Ashley’s greeting, her mother, Mira, also turned, smiling too as she saw Luna. Looking at the two women side to side, the resemblance and similarities between them couldn’t go unnoticed. They both had light green eyes, straight black hair, and the exact same smile; with a crinkle at each corner of their lips. The light green eyes was the place Luna’s similarity with them ended though. Her hair was flaming red and her smile didn’t have a crinkle, but a curve when tipped to the
Luna stared up at the ceiling of the hospital room, both her hands folded on her stomach, as she waited for her doctor. The fluorescent lighting over both sides of her head highlighted the starkness of the hospital tiles. Luna didn’t revile hospitals as most people did, but it wasn’t one of her favorite places to be either. Drab was its aesthetic, always, and it always smelled of antiseptics and drugs. It was where people died and babies were born. It was where her baby had died.At this, the memories threatened to trickle in, but Luna forced them back to the deep dark corner of her mind. Rehashing them now would do her no good. The past was where it was meant to be; behind her. She was moving forward now, and her appointment today was one of the steps involved in that future. Just then, the door to the hospital room opened and Dr. Gina Michaels stepped in. Dr. Gina was a trim willowy woman in her mid-thirties, blond hair currently packed back in a bouncy ponytail with deep blue
“Thank you, Julio,” Luna said as she took her seat in the chair the restaurant owner pulled out for her.He tucked the chair back towards the table, Luna looked up at him, and gave him a smile. The pudgy mid-thirties Italian chef smiled back at her, his ruddy face flushed with pleasure.“You’re welcome, ma bella,” he said, his tone heavily accented with his hometown intonation. “You know you’re my favorite customer.”Luna chuckled. “I know. And I’m a sucker for your praises and fawning over me. I’m pretty sure I come here as much as for your food as I do for your compliments.”“A beautiful woman like you should be fawned over as frequently as possible, bellasima, you’re a direct art from God.”Luna laughed at Julio’s extravagancy. “Okay, stop, or my head might not fit through the door when I leave here.”“I’ll try,” Julio said, smiling too. “So what’ll you have? My specials, as usual?”“You know I trust you always.”Julio’s face flushed with pleasure again. “Then you’re in for
When Julio finally left, Justin took his seat across Luna. He sat and stared at her for several seconds without saying a word. Luna stared right back at him, determined to not be the first one to break. She knew Justin well enough to know that their little staring game was just that to Justin, a game. And he would take great pleasure in winning it over her.Slowly, his gaze raked over Luna, just like hers had when he first came in. Tortuously, his eyes travelled from her head, down to her belly, where it dipped to her center. Heat pooled there as Justin’s eyes came back to hers. His were darker and more dangerous as he stared deliberately into her eyes.“Red had always been your color,” he finally said.Luna’s pulse jumped, and scrambled at the intimacy of Justin’s low tone. “I know,” she said, pleased to hear her voice coming out strong with no tremble. “I’m surprised you noticed though,” she added.“I notice a lot more than you think,” Justin said, his gaze still fixed on
Eight years ago.Luna twisted the strap of her purse as she stood on the pavement, nervously waiting for her ride. One Mr. Jake Kierney was supposed to be picking her up, Luna recited the descriptions of how he looked like in her head again. Brown hair, dark eyes, Caucasian and wearing a black suit. And then she remembered he was going to be pulling up in a car, and that the details of the car was probably what she was supposed to be memorizing. The realization upset the resolve Luna had managed to build up through the pep talk she had given herself before leaving her apartment.Licks of panic threatened to swarm through Luna, she forced them back with deep heavy breaths. In the middle of her breathing exercise, a black car pulled up in front of her. The window winded down to reveal a man leaning across the passenger’s seat.“You Luna Jones?” he asked, his tone a little accented enough to tell Luna he was a New Yorker, true and true.Luna nodded her head timidly. “Ye- yes, I am.
The car pulled to a stop in front of the hall. Luna remained seated in the back seat as she took in a deep breath, she closed her eyes and counted the beats of her heart. Her relaxation technique when she starts to feel anxious or nervous. And she was both because they had just arrived at the event hall where Lake Entertainment, Justin’s company, was having its pre-Launch party for the Gala they were going to be hosting. And she had been invited because she was part of the board for the Gala. When had I ever thought joining Justin’s company was in any way a good idea? Luna thought to herself now. Whatever possessed me to think that? Because now she’s in the board, she’s part of the company, and that means working with Justin and being in the same room with his family. In the same room with his mother, for crying out loud.Luna opened her eyes and laid her head on the headrest, staring up at the top of the car. Moira Lake was the epitome of a dangerous and powerful monarch. Her k
“I want to say thank you to everyone for coming,” Logan said into the microphone. The gala had been going on for hours now, it was starting to wind down, towards the end. He was giving his speech as Chairman of Lake Industries. “This would not have been successful without you all,” he continued. “I consider you all family, but I would like to thank my family, the one that I made. Both my sons, Justin and Brian, I am proud of you both. This Gala would not have been successful without you both, I love you.” He raised a toast towards Justin and Brian. “And to the ladies who stood by their side, and not just stood, but did their part in making this a success, Luna and Ashley,” he raised his glass towards Luna and Ashley, he smiled, “I love you. You are the best additions this family could have ever asked for, and my sons are lucky to have you in their lives.” He paused. “Love makes the world go around, without it, we would be lost, and I am glad that you four have found your way to ea
Luna stood in front of the full-length mirror, she placed a hand over her bump, and stared at her image. She smiled as she felt Justin’s arms wrap around her midsection. She leaned back and rested her head on Justin’s chest, she sighed as he started nibbling on her neck. “Can’t we just stay in and not go?” she asked, tilting her neck even better for Justin’s mouth to have access. Justin stopped nibbling, he looked at the mirror, meeting her eyes. “You are a witch,” he murmured. Luna laughed. “What? It’s just a suggestion,” she said, trying to look innocent. “Yeah, a suggestion that you know I am one hundred percent for,” Justin replied. “Hell, I suggested it an hour ago, and what did you say?” Luna closed her eyes. “We really should go,” she echoed her own answer. “That’s right,” Justin murmured, his mouth already muffled against the side of her neck again. Luna sighed, she twined her fingers with Justin’s on her stomach. “I was an idiot,” she murmured. Justin ma
Present. Now Luna was mad. When the article was released, while they were preparing for the press conference, during the press conference, Luna had been sick all through. But now that the press conference was over, she was mad. She had kept her calm all through the press conference. Even when the questions had turned personal and her answers had left her a little hard to breathe, Luna had kept her calm. Rita had arrived just few seconds after the press conference started, she had stood behind the interviewers, facing Luna. And she had been showing her markers with her hands, thumbs up when she was doing good and stuff like that. That had helped to keep her calm, that, and the solid presence of Justin behind her. He had stood behind her chair, no word, no interruptions, just the occasional squeeze of her shoulder. Quiet support, and steady, even gentle, backing. And then Moira had walked in. The press conference had been nearing its end by then, Luna had watched as Rita had f
Flashback Luna sat on the sofa in the living room, staring at nothing. Moira was in front of her, pacing and reprimanding her about something. Luna wasn’t sure what, she hadn’t been listening when Moira started, she wasn’t listening now, and she simply just didn’t care. She didn’t have the energy to care, she barely had the energy to be seating here as she was. She just wanted to lie down. For the past two weeks now, that was all she had been wanting to do. Just lie down, preferably in a dark quiet corner, but at this point, she would take anything she could get. But she wanted to lie down, pull a thick, dark cover over her head, and just go to sleep. She wanted to sleep, and go on sleeping, she wanted to sleep for a long period of time. And whenever she thought of the concept of waking up from that sleep, she didn’t like it. Her heart sunk at the thought of waking up, and having to face all of this again. If she woke up, she had to sit up, she had to stand, she had to walk, she
The next day, the whole issue with Honor took a back seat in Luna’s mind as she found herself with an entirely different, and bigger, situation on her hands. Another article was leaked, this one about her father. It dug up the old news about her father, and the issue he had with Lake Industries, the debacle that had brought Luna to New York and to Justin. The article was all about rehashing what her father did, how he ‘betrayed’ Lake Industries for a handout, and how he disappeared from the grid because of his shame. His name, face and story were plastered all over the news article. Even her mother and sister were not left out, Mira and Ashley’s faces and names were printed in it too. Feeling sick about it all, Luna pressed a hand to her stomach, she stood still, trying to get in a deep breath. She was at home, people were in the house, Justin had called an emergency press conference immediately the news had hit the media. Camera men and their crew were moving about the living
“I really needed that,” Luna said two hours later, as she and Justin walked back into the studio. Justin wiggled his eyebrows at her. “Which part?” Luna laughed, she swatted his arm playfully. “The food and nice view part, you pervert.” Justin shrugged. “Hey, you sounded like you enjoyed the other part very much too when we were doing it.” Luna laughed again, she shook her head. “You’re an idiot.” “An idiot you were screaming his name,” Justin leaned down and whispered into her ear. Luna looked up at him, her eyes widening. “Justin!” Somebody cleared their throat behind them, Justin and Luna both turned at the same time to look. The smile and teasing glint in her eyes were still there when Luna’s eyes met Honor’s. “Honor,” she said, startled. She sobered up immediately, Honor looked at Luna, like she focused on her like she was determined to act as though Justin was not there. Luna felt the freeze, but somehow she felt like Honor’s acknowledgement of her was not part
One week later. Luna rubbed the kinks out of her neck, she had been stuck going through things that needed to be put in place for the Gala, all morning. All week too. Ever since Honor pulled her company out of the Gala event, there had been slacks in the work that needed to be done. Both in the parts that Honor had taken up to do, and in the aspects that her company had been taking care of. The fashion aspect. “These are really good,” Luna commented, looking at the design sketches that had been left by Honor and her company before she left. “Yeah,” Temperance, the assistant working with Luna on deciding the fashion angle for the Gala, said beside her. “Miss Kosarin and her people really worked hard on it, they worked almost round the clock too. It was like there was some competition or something.” Luna knew better that Temperance just what she was saying. From the first day they had met, she and Honor had both known there was going to be a competition between them. They had
Present. Luna and Justin were both in Justin’s car, they were driving after Honor. After her announcement, Honor had dropped the mic and immediately left the party. Moira had been livid, she hadn’t shown it, of course, or at least not in an explosive way. She hadn’t screamed or shouted, or done anything of the sort. Even in the face of what someone like Moira would probably term the greatest betrayal of all time, she still hadn’t lost control. She hadn’t shown her anger to the guests or given them a show that they could go talk about to the blogs. No matter her personal feelings towards Moira, Luna had had to admit that she found that impressive. But even with her composure, Luna had known she was angry. In fact, it had been very obvious to her, and no doubt to her family members too. She saw the look Justin, Logan and even Brian, had exchanged when it happened. The vein that had popped out on Moira’s forehead had been the first tell, followed by the twitching at the corner of
Flashback. “So you’re saying there’s nothing you can do?” Brandon asked the lawyer. Luna was in her room, the room she shared with Justin, although ‘shared’ was a strong word for how much time Justin actually spent in the room with her these days. Luna shook her head to shake off those thoughts, thinking about the ever increasing distance between she and Justin for the past month would only just make her depressed. And she didn’t have the time or head space for that. She refocused her attention on the matter at hand. She was in the room, her mother and father were on a call with her, Luna stared at their faces on the laptops screen. A man was seated beside her, Carl James, her lawyer. He was a low budget lawyer, the type she had been able to afford on her own, hers and her parents, that is. She couldn’t tap into the generous money Justin kept depositing into her account almost every day. And she couldn’t do that because she couldn’t very well use his money to hire a lawyer who
