As Desmond continued talking, "One day, I went to his house," and the voice was quite humble; the answer to that emotion was attached to each word.

"And asked him secretly," the memory floated by his conscience, "to give me her contact number." The air indeed bore the memory of that moment when he dared to find the one person, the very last, who had ever figured himself capable of so much kindness.

Isaac narrowed his eyes and suddenly felt as if a frown had formed on his face. "Wait up, please," he spoke down, but with an edge of skepticism; "Your auntie means your uncle's sister, right?"

A flash of pain and anger crossed Desmond's eyes as he remained shut-mouthed but caught glimpsing a very tight clench of his jaw. "Not really, my auntie," he replied with venomous words, "she wasn't really my auntie." The world seemed to vibrate with the tension thus created because one could almost feel the weight of Desmond's emotions.

"My uncle is a bad man," Desmond continued in a lowered voice,

Adrian drew in a deep contemplative breath, narrowing his eyes slightly in thought for the moment while pondering the intricacies of life. "Hmm... that is how you came to be an armed robber?" he asked, a mix of curiosity and compassion coloring his tone.Desmond nodded solemnly, failing to conceal shame and regret in his countenance. "Yes, sir, that is how it came to be," he replied quietly.Adrian looked intently at Desmond, searching the young man's face for telltale signs of either lying or an insincere appeal. All he saw instead was a deep yearning for forgiveness and a new chance in life. "And you say you want to go back to school, no?" he prodded gently.Desmond came alive, somehow alighting; glimmers of hope were now igniting in his eyes. "Yeah, sir, I do actually want to become a medical doctor," he stated with conviction embedded in it.Adrian pondered a little bit about this flow of consciousness. "Well, then," he pronounced, enunciating the words in a clear firm tone. "You

Hands on head. Burning it. "I know, but do not put the sins of the father upon the son, please." Well, the voice sounded desperate. It was weak with heart-torn appeals. The eyes were quite swollen with tears as though one were to pour water into them. Hands held together in prayer, rocking back and forth, he reminded everyone of the intense suffering. Forced to plead, lie, and prattle. The desperation in Desmond's voice was unmistakable, as if his heart were pouring out to plead. "I know, sir, but for God's sake, do not let the sins of the father be visited upon the son," he said, his eyes filled with tears; his hands were clasped in prayer, swaying back and forth as a reminder of the agony he had been through. Forced to beg, lie, and prattle.Adrian's face was a stony wall so that not even his eyes could move when he said, begging, his voice firm but much tinged with sadness- "You never can tell, you still have the blood of your father in you" as if to proclaim. "I'm sorry, but I can

The phone rang, an inaudible buzz amid conversation. Isaac looked down, his eyes dilating slightly as he saw the name on the display. Samuel, the boss. "It's the boss," he told Desmond and Adrian almost lowly, with some caution. The three of them remained frozen with expectation as they waited for Samuel to say something, anything, as to why he was calling. The atmosphere was thick with suspense and silence felt heavy."Why is he calling?" Desmond's question was a whisper tinged with an inquisitive note, his eyes glued to Isaac."I don't know," Isaac made an equally low reply. "Let's just hear him out." He hesitated for a moment, hovered his finger over the screen and finally picked up the call."Sir," Isaac pressed a steady note to that voice. Then he trained his ears again on Samuel, with eyes that could have shown hints of wariness but whose face remained untouched. The silence lengthened now and again, punctuated only by Isaac's muttered murmurings of approval. Others stood there

"So why don't you just go ahead and try? Samuel has an evil grin on his face. It looks so perfect on him." "And for you, Adrian, get your wife ready; you will see her tomorrow, minus her life. When he spoke, his voice had an acrid finality that shattered the already shaky illusions of hope.""This is enough, Samuel," he started. He interrupted himself in the middle of his sentence, almost stammering through it. The anguish was deep: "Please refrain from harming my wife anyhow. She means the world to me." His mind was pleading, imploring Samuel to spare his wife's life."Ah, your beautiful wife-the one you seem to care so much about-hanging there," Samuel said, thoroughly entertained. "How do you think you're gonna bribe my boys, so they will side with you?"The venom in his tone was unmistakable. "I will destroy you, Adrian; I will make you completely incapable. Your entire generation will perish. You have my word," Samuel spat his threat like a curse-word.The room was silent now, he

Isaac led him into a deep bush, their body sealed with very thick foliage. The air was heavy with damp earth, decaying leaves, and when the only sound was the soft rustling of leaves and snap of twigs beneath their feet, Adrian followed closely behind Isaac, his eyes wondering themselves in a kind of anticipation-meets-trepidation survey of their surroundings."How are you familiar with this place?" Adrian asked, just above whispering into Isaac's ear. Isaac said not a word for a while and kept his eyes painstakingly searching the dense underbrush ahead."I just happened to be out wandering one day when I found Samuel sitting there with some people," Isaac said at last, low and measured, "and then I knew it was the inner chamber." The words hung in the air like a challenge, and the eyes of Adrian narrowed slightly at the processing information.A few months later, they reached the clearing, and suddenly Adrian's eyes opened wide in shock, for there lay the footwear of Jenny on the flo

The other two men continued to come closer with their footsteps pounding the ground in relentless chase. They were shooting bullets towards Adrian's car, the gunfire echoing through the air. Starting with a rev, Adrian's car went off, tires screeching as he rode away from the danger. The raw roar of the engine echoed through the air and, in spirit, shook the very foundations of the earth.Adrian, driving like the wind, witnessed his speedometer needle rise and fall a hair's breadth from the upper limits. Isaac and Desmond were so thrilled that their faces glowed with joy and relief. "Yoooo!" They were vociferating, gravely hoarse from the excitement. The atmosphere was thunderous inside the car, filled with buoyancy while speeding away from impending attack.A few minutes later, they reached home, the car crunching softly on gravel as it pulled in front of the house. Adrian, the two men, and I got out, tired faces etched with relief. "Come in," I said to them, with a warm, welcoming v

With open arms around Isaac, a big smile was painted across my face. "How are you, how have you been?" I asked, my voice breaking with emotion. The little sparkle in Isaac's eyes as he said, "I'm fine, Aunty Jenny," was more than enough for me. I looked into his little face, taking in every detail of it, and without fail, I had to hug him again because being back in those arms made all that feeling just so aware."I was looking for you, and I couldn't see you," Isaac explained, excitement and relief mixing in his voice. "I walked to where you were working so they could trace your phone, but they couldn't trace you." Each new word I heard tugged at my heart, and Isaac's eyes bore into mine, telling me of the urgency and fear that had spurred him on to find me."I had no option but to go to Uncle Samuel for he could assist and give you contact," Isaac continued, his voice trembling with emotion. I felt guilt and remorse hit me as Isaac recounted everything he had been through because of

Desmond's words echoed out in the air. Emotion caught up with me, and I was feeling astonished. "Uncle Samuel, little son Desmond," I whispered, my voice shaking with disbelief. I opened my arms wide, and Desmond walked into them, holding me tightly. "I hugged him, shouting, I felt so happy," I blurted out, my face streaming with tears. The warmth of his body, the rhythm of the heartbeat; it all felt comfortable and connected."So happy with both of you around me," I said as I held Desmond and Isaac close to me. I turned to Adrian, curiosity piqued. "How do you guys know Adrian?" I asked in wonder. Desmond inhaled deeply, and his eyes momentarily glazed with emotions."Hmmm," he breathed, lips barely forming the word, "Samuel-my dad-lied to me. He said that he was my uncle, but one day, I found out that he indeed was my father." I felt my heart lurch; shock and surprise filled me as the enormity of what he said hit me. Desmond dropped his head in shame and regret. The room faded, and

I know about the little marriage you have with each other and I know how you both can drive a wedge into each other's side."Adrian's expression was like dusk, with his eyes blazing out all his pent-up wrath. "Touch her and your death will be at your door," he commanded. She chuckled gleefully, "Oh, but you have. I've been your model servant, pretending all along, just biding my time to strike and watch the disarray of your union as your history unfolds."I shivered at her words. Was this marriage truly in danger? Would Grace really fracture everything we had built together?Grace's words made me miserable with indecision. Surely, she wouldn't have done that. I looked towards Adrian to see how this would have affected him, but his face reflected no such expression- it had a strict seriousness."You will not lift a finger to

JENNY POVWe strolled to the living room and there, illuminated by the soft glow of the lights illuminating the path from the entrance, we found Grace (or so she claimed) standing with head downcast, turning eyes to the floor in a gesture of abandonment and with shoulders slumped in an act of discomfiture. "Good day, sir and ma'am," she addressed, her whisper almost inaudible, trembling slightly as she spoke, the words formed by hardly fluttering lips."Yea, Grace," he replied in a neutral tone, without a discernible expression, right when we sat together, as I was sitting on him, arms wrapped around me while holding me to himself, a hand softly placed on my stomach. Adrian then turned to Scarlett, his eyes narrowing as he studied her with a furrowed, working overtime with his brain to decode whatever she was ruminating upon."Grace, who are you?" he asked in a commanding tone that seemed to challenge such pronouncement, laced with some measure of skepticism, his tone even dripping wi

JENNY POVThe onset of this incident will forever remain my awakening hour, with the night still darkened. I became more aware of my surroundings, with the first thing in sight being Adrian, my husband, seated next to me with a most concerned look on his face. That dim bedside lamp light warmed him, throwing the depths of his worry into bold relief."What happened?" I pictured me demanding, but my voice was edged with confusion and alarm. Just as I attempted to rise, dizziness would encompass me, my husband's hands there to gently yet quite firmly assist me."You fell; you fainted," Adrian said. I kept on repeating it to myself in an attempt to fathom what it meant to faint. "I fainted?" I was finally able to whisper, the word now hanging in the air as if challenging my perception. He looked at me for a long moment, concerned but slightly annoyed. "Yes, love," he said gently but firmly. "I've told you to take it easy on yourself." Even as his tone reproached, his eyes showed the quick

"Honey," I called, sweet and gentle, hoping that Adrian would respond. But there was only silence. I waited for a moment expecting him to walk into the bedroom, but nothing.Sighing, I arise and manage to put all my strength into moving toward the kitchen. The instant Grace saw me walk through, she seemed to stop whatever the action was that she was engaged in and smiled, saying "Good morning, ma'am." In that voice, there was this plural, respectful and welcoming tone. I returned the gesture but instinctively put my hands on my huge tummy to rub it while feeling kicks from the baby inside. "Good morning, dear," I added just to sound a little more cheerful than I really felt.It was an exceptionally warm and inviting room that within one breath, would include coffee brewing. I found my usual place on the table an

ADRIAN POVIn the warmth of home, the weak lights of evening embraced us in lazy comfort. "Well, this is home; I was checking on Jenny," I muttered, sadly and tenderly gazing at her with concern. "No need to worry, babe. Jenny was fine," I comforted him with a smile, gently pulling him into hugs.As we moved on toward the room, the only sound from out two feet padding softly across the floor. "We need to hire a maid," I soothingly suggested, trying to approach the subject slowly. But Jenny interrupted, her voice very clear and very strong. "No, baby. I can do all the housework," she opposed right away, with a determined glint in her eyes that dared me to argue with her.My heart reeked of love and guilt towards her. I smiled sweetly and said, "No, my love-no." "You are expecting and I cannot allow you to submit yourself to doing that." Please, let me take care of this." I pleaded as I caressed her hair softly, as though that might somehow soften her resolute spirit. She regarded my w

ADRIAN POVFour hours later, the wait finally ended. Dr. Dazzy walked out of the emergency room, a mask of professionalism on his face, his eyes revealing but a sliver of concern. He called out my name, voice laden with reassuring authority like a lifeline thrown to a drowning man, "Mr...?" Suddenly his gaze shifted towards the waiting area, raking in one after the other until at last, it rested on yours truly.I jumped up, my heart racing. Oh yeah, that's me, I whispered back. "How is she? How's Jenny?" The floodgates burst open. The treatment softened the doctor's looks a bit as he nodded. "I'm with your wife now," he said, almost holding out a glimmer of hope. "Let's talk," he said, sending a gesture toward one of the waiting room's quiet corners. My heart drummed in my chest like a drummer preparing for some primitive ritual. What was he going to say? Was Jenny okay? The uncertainty was murder.I quickly marched into the doctor's office, purposeful stride like a man on a mission,

ADRIAN POVAs we lay there, Jenny's body tensed, muscles broiling under the skin like waves about to crest. A grotesque distortion of her face came into view as her eyes were closed shut, and a strangled, guttural cry, "Hpppp!" escaped her lips, followed closely by a heartbreaking wrenching sound. This tearing sound ripped irrevocably through the very fabric of that moment. Eyes that once sparkled with humor and fun turned into tight, scrunched-up furrows of mixed terror and discomfort." And I, exhilarated, turned toward her, speaking soft, reassuring words, almost like a summer's warm, gentle breeze."What is it, baby?" I asked, leniently. Distracted by pain, Jenny barely perceived my touch as I brushed a straining hand from her forehead. In that instant, I felt an electric jolt through my fingers. Slowly, her eyes opened, and she gazed up at me- her expression blurred and hazy, breathing labored. Each rise and fall of her chest steered with ragged breaths alongside cowering flickeri

"I'm over here, baby," she said, warm and inviting, as I turned in the direction of her voice.Jenny was in the room, snacking and gently rubbing her stomach. She had dancing happiness in her eyes, and her face shone with a glorious smile. I, at that moment, couldn't help but smile back at her, as time seemed to make my love grow stronger for her."You are eating too much baby," I said, staring right at her, mischief ringing in my voice."Funny. "Yea," she replied soft and gentle. I moved to the edge of the bed and sat on it beside her, our eyes shining into each other. I was lost staring into those beautiful eyes and getting all the more lovely toward her. Before the evils of my mind settle, I kissed her lips very lightly, "I love you very much," he whispered-voice barely audible as he choked with emotion.
