The elevator doors sighed open, revealing a gleaming expanse of glass and chrome that mirrored the steely resolve in Jennifer's eyes. Grumbling under her breath about having to wear formal clothes, she smoothed down the neat blue blouse that felt more like a costume than professional attire. Today was her first day as the sales executive in her father's tech company, a position she'd begrudgingly accepted.

The elevator soon reached her floor and she didn’t even wait for it to open fully before she squeezed her tiny self out, but as she stepped out, files clutched under her arm, she bumped right into someone in the hallway and the files went flying off her arms.

It was Marshall, the infuriating son of her father's best friend, who he had appointed as product manager – the third highest position in the company. A position, she felt, rightfully belonged to her, not just for her qualifications, but for her birthright. But her father, old-fashioned and subtly biased towards women holding t

Mr. Blackwood, ever the gentleman, followed a few steps behind Anna, his eyes taking in the way her brown hair cascaded down her back like a chocolate waterfall, catching the light with subtle auburn highlights. They had come to one of the biggest Boutiques in the city. Mr. Blackwood wanted to get her new clothes as her old ones had been burned in the fire. For the past week, she had been wearing his shirts to stay at home and even though she looked beautiful in anything, he wanted to watch her in her feminine energy; he would rather see her in a sexy gown than a baggy top and jeans. They had already made two picks, but Mr. Blackwood was not impressed. As they walked through the cloth racks, suddenly, her steps faltered. She stood before a rack of shimmering gowns, a deep emerald green catching her eye, it was just the same color as her pretty eyes. The gown flowed like liquid silk, stepping closer with excitement in her eyes, her fingers traced the delicate design embedded on it, a l

The rest of the day had been silent between Maxwell and Anna; Linda’s appearance posed a threat to whatever future they were looking forward to, but Maxwell had assured her that it was nothing to worry about.Night came, and unlike the previous days since she moved in with him, Maxwell didn’t come into the bedroom at bedtime. Anna losing her patience went downstairs to get him herself, she was surprised to see him lying on the couch. Since when does he sleep on the couch?“Max?” Anna called softly. He looked up, surprised to see her there. “Hey, you are still up?”“Yeah, I was waiting for you. Are you not coming up to bed?” she asked, furrowing her eyebrows in curiosity.“Oh… Um… Yeah, I will be there shortly,” he replied.“Alright, I am scared to be up there alone, so I will wait for you.”Seeing that she was persuasive, MB sighed and stood up. “Fine, let's go up then.” He chuckled.Anna’s face lit up with a smile as she took his hand, she was already dressed in her night robe, weari

The busy city air was very different from the quiet comfort of Mr. Blackwood's home, where Annabel had been spending the last few weeks. She missed the familiar buzz of the publishing house, and the clatter of keyboards. Although he didn’t approve of it, Anna decided to show up at the office today. She was the CEO and didn’t necessarily need to show up but she still had friends there, Alia and co; her new position would not rob her of that.Annabel had come out with one of Maxwell’s cars, it was his least expensive car and she had also not mentioned it to him. Of course the servants had no problem with her taking it, but Anna knew they must have informed him. Too bad she had turned off her phone, so he wouldn’t be able to reach her on time, she would be at the office before he could do anything about it.As she arrived in front of the publishing house, Anna pulled the car over by the roadside. Anna was confused, she was quite sure she had heard the doorbell ring.Ready to step back inside and round things up for the day, her eyes caught something of interest. There was a package at the foot of the door and an envelope beside it. Her heart skipped and she looked around again to be sure.“Hello? Was she late?“My mother was very young when she got married to my father, their marriage was never going to happen if she didn’t get pregnant with me, it was supposed to be just fun between a boy and a girl. She was from a respectful home, so to avoid having her character questioned, she had to get married to my father.”“Oh,” Jenny mouthed, not exactly how she expected this story to start.“I know, pitiful. Today, she was facing her past, a past she'd hoped to bury forever, she had to do this in order to move on.A buzzer sounded, and a thick slab of reinforced glass slid down, revealing the face she'd dreaded seeing. Jimmy. Gone was the cocky swagger he used to carry. His once-bright eyes were dull, his hair matted, and his face gaunt. A pang of something akin to pity lanced through Anna, quickly replaced by a surge of anger; she shouldn’t be feeling bad for him, he brought this upon himself. He stared at her, a flicker of hope igniting in his eyes. With a happy smile on her face, Anna slid into the cool leather seat. As the car pulled away, she looked out the window and was fascinated by what she saw.It was Las Vegas, a place she had never been to before. The tall buildings and fast-paced life of New York City were gone. In this area, the scenery was mostly made up of huge casinos with crazy themes and lots of neon lights. She would see a huge copy of the Eiffel Tower one minute and a pirate ship with sails flapping the next. In the best way possible, it was too much to take in.In contrast to Manhattan's crowded, narrow streets, these roads were wide and smooth, making it easy for cars to move along. The warm breeze ma
