Chapter 5: Strange encounter

“Evelyn!” called familiar voice. Her eye lids pulled open to see Aurora standing there with tears lingering in her eyes. Standing from the cold floor of the cell she was placed in earlier, her hand reached to her through the open space of the bars.

“How did you know I was here?” she asked aurora who was busy taking in her physical form to blink the tears away from her eyes.

“I was heading to your apartment when the neighbors informed me about what happened. They said they saw you being taken away by the cops.

Evelyn what happened? Why are you here?” she asked tightly squeezing unto her hand, curiosity dancing in her eyes.

“It’s okay I’m fine. There’s just a misunderstanding”

“What misunderstanding? Why did they lock you up?” she asked Evelyn who couldn’t understand why she had been placed here. The police hadn’t said a word to her ever since she got here. Sounds of footsteps approaching could be heard only to find Olivia heading towards them. By just guessing, she too found out by the neighbors.

“I heard what happened” she said panting heavily as she gazed at Evelyn.

 Just as they spoke, the officer sitting on the front desk stood giving a salute to the man who just stepped in. From the look of it, he seemed to be his superior. He gave a nod for the officer to be at ease before taking steps to them.

“Officer what’s going on?” Olivia asked. 

“Mr. Barnes has filed for a report against Ms. Evelyn for the embezzlement of funds from his restaurant” he explained placing his hand on the hilt of his belt. Blood rushed to Olivia’s face on hearing this.

“How could he? Evelyn would never do such a thing” she declared out rightly for the officer to simply shrug.

“Why would he want to accuse you of such a thing?”

“Because Evelyn wouldn’t give in to him. He has being harassing her or quite a while now.

He’s such a nasty jerk for using this method on you” grunted Olivia stamping her foot to the ground. The anger she harbored was like a virus that was quick to spread over to aurora who listened to her.

“What? Someone has been harassing you? Who is it Evelyn” All their talks at the moment was making Evelyn come on with a splitting headache. She finally understood why Mr. Barnes was doing this to her. Since she couldn’t accept to his demands, why not make her suffer.

Both aurora and Olivia kept going back and forth pouring out their anger over at the issue and the more Evelyn heard them, the more her head seem to ache.

In the end, they decided to look for a solution and apparently bail was the option available which would be done with a lawyer. Instantly, Aurora went to call her father anting to inform him about the situation on ground but unfortunately, she couldn’t get through to him as his line was switched off until eventually trying the line of his assistant she was informed that he had left for a business trip and would be back in a few days. 

Aurora tried calling her mother for help but her line seemed busy at the moment. Just as she thought of who to call, a call from josh came in and forgetting the hate she had for him, narrated Evelyn’s situation to him.

“Evelyn, josh wants to talk to you” on hearing Josh’s name, anger rose up from the depth of Evelyn’s heart. Only after a little persuasion from aurora did she pick up the phone listening to his voice that sounded through it. 

“Aurora told me what happened. It is okay I’m here. I can help you out” he said sounding as her savior. Relief washed over her on hearing him until she heard him speak.

“But… you have to come back to me. Let the past be in the past. I’ll forget everything you’ve done and accept you back” his words were so narcissit and she hated him for that. She would rather sleep in here than to come back to him.

“Josh no matter what, I’m not coming back to you. Its over between us” she said.

“Evelyn how can you prove to be righteous at this moment. Look I’m really busy at the moment so I’m giving you a chance now. What do you say?” silence reigned at both ends with none of them saying a word for a while. Through the phone Evelyn could sense his impatience.

“Josh, fuck you. Help me if you truly want to help” she said. A loud roar from him was heard and before she could fully hear what he was ranting about, she hung up the phone. Aurora looked at her and from their conversation she could tell what had transpired.

And honestly, she hated Josh even more.

Hours later, with the day turning dark, it took Evelyn hell to dismiss Aurora and Olivia. Tears welled up aurora’s eyes as she seemed even more stubborn to leave and with her current state, her health was sure to deteriorate. Pleading with Olivia to take Aurora back home, she agreed promising to return.

Hours later with both girls gone, Evelyn sat there in the lonely cell. She didn’t know how long she would be in here.

With a sigh leaving her lips, she heard footsteps approaching the cell, jingling of keys sounding in the air before shortly, the door was pulled open.

“You are free to go Ms. Evelyn” Said the officer making a look of confusion to sprawl up her face and as she stood, he seemed to see the look on her face.

“You’ve ben granted bail” he informed her. The look vanished on assuming aurora must have gotten help but on stepping out, she couldn’t find anyone as her presence wasn’t seen. Her brows furrowed lightly and when her things were brought to her, she picked up her phone dialing Aurora’s number only to be informed that she was still at home. 

Evelyn didn’t want to bother her much as she was receiving treatment. Ending the call she thought of who t was tat would help her when Josh came to mind but not wanting to get ahead of herself, she went forward meeting the officer who stood there.

“Anything else?” he asked.

“I would like to ask, who bailed me?” he questioned but just as she asked this, loud enigmatic footsteps sounded from behind her.

“I did” a voice boomed from behind her deep and firm startling her. And just as she turned to see who it was, she found a man walking towards her with an impeccable aura. 

Her body froze instantly. A smile to his lips as he spoke

“HELLO EVELYN”
