Marie hadn't panicked since she'd been taken away. She'd remained calm and composed throughout the whole thing; Lucille was the only one she was worried about.

She kept her tone lighthearted as she said, "Don't worry about me, Lucy. I've been through much more than you have."

Lucille's heart clenched at the tenderness in Marie's tone. At the same time, she caught Marie's underlying meaning.

Marie was telling her to abandon her if it really came down to it. That she'd lived long enough.

Lucille's gaze turned icy. She never would've expected these people to be heartless enough to drag an old woman in her late 70s into this.
