Chapter 45: Echoes in the Dark

Evie awoke with a jolt, her heart pounding in her chest. A sense of unease prickled at her skin, a feeling that something was terribly wrong. Glancing at Xal'dar, she saw him still slumbering, his breathing shallow and uneven.

The faint blue glow of the crystalline heart pulsed rhythmically in his pocket, a beacon of hope in the dimness of the hidden chamber. Relief washed over her momentarily, but the nagging sense of dread refused to subside.
