"There’s nothing I can do about it now because she doesn’t have the money to give back. We’d just end up fighting, and I don’t want to add to Tatay’s problems." Thinking of Tatay made me cry even more. "Are you really determined to move to Manila, Lyrica?" he asked. "Of course. There are more opportunities in Manila, Marco. Aren’t you planning to work there too after finishing your course?" I wiped my tears away. "Ah, yeah, Lyrica," he replied absentmindedly. "Just don’t leave money at home anymore, Lyrica. Avoid the problem altogether," Marco suggested. I nodded, and we continued our journey. When we arrived outside Krisha’s house, I quickly fixed myself up. "You already look pretty, Lyrica," Marco teased. "Idiot! I’m just checking if my eyes are still puffy," I snapped at him, which made him laugh. "Oh, so the lovebirds are here!" Mildred teased as soon as she saw us. I rolled my eyes at her. It was always like this every time we met up. "That’s why Lyrica keeps rejecting me—because of all your teasing," Marco laughed. "And we’ll keep teasing you two until she completely turns you down!" Krisha added. "Ugh, so stop teasing Mil and me," Wren said, scratching his head. The group burst into laughter. Wren had been courting Mildred for ages, but she hadn’t given him an answer yet, prioritizing her studies first. Mildred was studying Elementary Education, while Wren and Krisha were taking Business Administration. Krisha planned to return to school next year. Marco, on the other hand, was taking Accountancy—the same course I was enrolled in before I stopped. "You’re such slowpokes when it comes to courting. Look at Ivan; he was so fast, I ended up pregnant," Krisha joked. "You idiot, girl! I’d never dream of getting pregnant early!" Mildred said, exasperated. I quickly agreed with her. "Why? Are you planning to become nuns, you and Lyrica?" Krisha teased. "That might be better!" I quickly said. "Oh, poor Marco," Mildred laughed. "Enough already! Every time we meet, you all bring this up!" I scolded. "Where’s Mimi, by the way?" I asked Krisha, referring to her almost one-year-old daughter. "She’s probably asleep already. I left her with Ivan earlier." "Let’s just go home then; the person we came to visit is sleeping," Mildred joked. "What about me, huh?" Krisha said in mock annoyance. "We don’t care about you," Wren teased. "Rude! As if I didn’t help you before!" Krisha retorted with a glare. "Stop it already! I’ll go buy gin. You’re all so noisy. We came here to relax!" Marco said. "Oh, it’s a drinking session, then! Go buy it, and we’ll shut up. I’m so stressed with school!" Mildred exclaimed. "I’ll go with you, bro," Wren said to Marco, and the two left. "You guys have a drinking session every week! You’re so sneaky! You only visit here to drink," Krisha complained. It was true. I only learned to drink because of them. Back when Krisha wasn’t pregnant, she’d invite us for drinks almost every night. But even so, I knew my limits when it came to alcohol. It’s not so bad to enjoy once in a while, is it? I sighed deeply. "That’s a heavy sigh, Lyrica. Is something bothering you?" Mildred asked, catching Krisha’s attention as well. "I’m just thinking about moving to Manila." "Are you really set on moving to Manila?" Krisha asked. "Yes, I am. I just haven’t told Nanay Lucing yet," I sighed again. "I really need to earn a bigger income now. I want Tatay to stop working," I added. "You should accept my offer, Lyrica. My cousin works for a company in Manila, and I’m sure she can help you," Mildred suggested. "I feel embarrassed, Mil... Besides, my savings are gone," I said, sighing once more. "I’ll lend you money, Lyrica. And you should take Mil’s offer. Even though we don’t want you to leave, maybe you’ll find better opportunities there. The pay in Manila is much higher," Krisha encouraged. "Hey, what’s this? Why aren’t we part of this gossip session?" Marco suddenly said as he and Wren returned from the store. "Do you even know what ‘girl talk’ is, Marco?" Mildred retorted. "Oh, who knows what you’ve been talking about," Wren chimed in, walking closer to Mildred. "Stay away from me, Wren, or I might punch you," Mildred threatened. "Wow, feisty! Fighting before you even get together," Krisha teased, making us all laugh. "You’re changing the subject, hmm?" Marco said, eyeing us suspiciously. " If leaving is what you truly want, Lyrica, we’ll support you. It’s for the betterment of your family’s future." Wren said gently after I finally told them about my plans of going to Manila. "That’s right, especially since you’ll have someone to stay with there," Krisha added. "I’m sure Ate Jessie will take good care of you," Mildred said with a reassuring smile. "But isn’t it dangerous? Manila can be tough. There are a lot of con artists there, and it’s risky, especially since you’re a woman," Marco said, his forehead creased with worry. "Marco, my friend, do you think Lyrica won’t take care of herself? For all we know, her luck might be waiting for her in Manila. Her family needs her more than ever now," Wren said seriously, patting Marco on the shoulder. Marco drank his glass of alcohol in silence, his emotions unreadable. It wasn’t a secret to our group—or even to me—that Marco had feelings for me. He had tried courting me several times before, but I had always turned him down. I didn’t want to ruin the friendship we had built over the years, and besides, I wasn’t interested in relationships. Marco understood, but there were times when he became overprotective. Thankfully, we always managed to resolve it through calm conversations."I’ll call Ate Jessie. Do you want to talk to her? I’ve mentioned your plans to her before. She told me there might be openings at her office, although that was some time ago. But there are plenty of other companies in Manila, Lyrica," Mildred offered. "Are you sure it’s okay? Won’t your cousin find it bothersome?" I asked hesitantly. "Of course not. Don’t worry about it; Ate is really kind," Mildred assured me. "Great! This way, we’ll have a ninang who’s a Manila girl!" Krisha teased, lightening the mood. "Okay, I suppose it won’t hurt to try," I said, smiling faintly. Mildred dialed her cousin Ate Jessie’s number. The phone rang several times before she answered, her background noisy. "Hello, Mildred? Why are you calling? Is something wrong?" Ate Jessie asked. "Nothing’s wrong, Ate. Are you busy? I just have a quick question," Mildred replied sweetly. "Not really. I’m just hanging out at a bar after work—chilling, you know," her cousin said with a laugh. "What’s your quest
Chapt 6The next morning, I went home to change clothes.“Lyrica? Can we talk?” Dad asked me. I nodded and followed him outside the house.“I'm sorry about last night, Dad. I just really felt upset.”“I understand, child. And I’m sorry too for your siblings. You know how they are,” he said with a sigh.“Yes, Dad. By the way, I might finally push through with leaving.”“Oh... Is that so? Are you sure about your plan?”“Yes, Dad. I’ve been saving up for this for a long time. I can help out more if I work in Manila,” I replied with a smile.“You really take after your mom, Lyrica. I know you won’t let anyone stop you. Just take care of yourself there, okay?”“I will, Dad.”And that was how our conversation ended. It was always the same advice from Dad—to be patient with my siblings or just try to understand them.I left the house and went to the terminal. When I arrived at the store, I got straight to work.“Dear, can I get a bag of onions? "Take care of yourself, Lyrica. Don't ever forget my reminders," my father said as he hugged me tightly.Today was the day I left for Manila, a five-hour journey from our province."I will, Dad. This is all for our family," I reassured him."Ate, please be careful there, okay? It's probably better that you're leaving. I hate seeing Ate Cynthia picking fights with you. Boyet and I can't do anything because we're too scared of her and Ate," Annika said, her voice trembling."You'll be fine. Just make sure you and Boyet look after our nieces and nephews. Call me right away if there's a problem, alright? Don't hesitate," I said as I ruffled her hair."Of course, Ate."Cynthia and the others weren't home; they had spent the night at Kuya Roy's house. "Uh, just ignore those two. Go ahead, put your things in that room, then let's eat," Jessie said, evading my questioning look. I just followed her instructions and stepped out again to join them for dinner."Hey girl, how old are you? You know, you’d be perfect for the place where we work," Misha said."Stupid! Leave Lyrica out of it; she’s pure!" Jessie quickly interjected as she sat at the dining table."Come on, it’s so hard to find jobs here in Manila. She’ll probably end up working there, too. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of her. Don’t act like you didn’t start the same way," Misha teased Jessie.Jessie let out a resigned sigh."Uh, so Lyrica, the truth is, I don’t actually work in an office. I couldn’t get hired by any company here in Manila back then," Jessie began."So I ended up working in a high-end bar, along with these two. No one back in the province knows, so please don’t mention it to Mildred. She’s so nosy," she said, shaking her head."Oh, of course not," I replied wi
My day started early, while Jessie and the others were just getting ready to sleep. I tidied up the apartment, mindful of Jessie’s instructions about what could and couldn’t be moved. After finishing the chores, I got myself ready for my first day of job hunting. I wore my black slacks from college, paired with a purple blouse. I powdered my face lightly and applied a bit of lipstick to add color. Despite it being only seven in the morning, the noise outside was already palpable. I slipped on my black doll shoes, texted my housemates to let them know I was out, and left.I rode a tricycle, holding the list of places I planned to visit. I started with the one closest to the apartment."Good morning, Sir. Is this where the hiring is happening?" I asked the guard stationed outside a tall building."Yes, hija. Are you applying?""Yes, I hope so," I replied with a smile."Alright, come in. Do you see the line of applicants over there?" He pointed to a group seated nearby. I nodded and proc
I didn’t know what to do when Annika called one morning, crying hysterically.“Ate! Ambet was rushed to the hospital! His fever is extremely high, and he had a seizure!” she sobbed, her voice trembling.“Lyrica, give me the phone. I’ll talk to her,” I heard Ate Cynthia say in a panicked tone.“Hello, Lyrica! We’re at the hospital right now. Ambet’s fever is so high. Send us money. We urgently need it for your nephew!” Ate demanded, her voice frantic.I burst into tears. Who could I even borrow money from? I still haven’t found a job.“Alright, Ate… I’ll send some as soon as I borrow from someone here. Please update me on Ambet’s condition,” I replied, my voice breaking.“Make sure to send it immediately. The doctor prescribed medicine, and we don’t have money to buy it,” Ate said before ending the call.I sat there, paralyzed. Jessie might be able to lend me at least a couple of thousand pesos.I waited for Jessie to wake up, but Shiela emerged from the bedroom first.“Oh, what happen
It was almost seven when we arrived at Valiente. The bar's building was stunning, modern in design, and at first glance, you wouldn't think it was a place meant for entertainment."Lyrica, let's head to our makeup room first. Sir Kyros might arrive later," Misha said to me."Hey, Jessie, Misha, who’s your companion? Are you really bringing her inside?" teased the building guard with a grin. He was a big man with muscular arms, which made me cringe and hide behind the two of them."Oh, Andoy! Don’t scare Lyrica like that!" Misha said, laughing."Don’t call me Andoy in front of this lovely lady. You can call me Anderson, Madam Lyrica," he greeted me with a smile."Yuck! Anderson doesn’t suit you, Andoy!" Misha teased."Enough with teasing Andoy, Misha! Lyrica's still shy. Watch over her, okay? She’s just applying as a waitress here," Jessie explained, referring to me."Of course! I’ll take care of Madam Lyrica," Andoy said. I simply smiled and nodded."You look even prettier when you sm
For almost half an hour, I’ve been waiting. To distract myself, I observed the office around me.I sighed in boredom. Moments later, the door opened again, making me jump to my feet in surprise.I thought it was Mama Julio who arrived, but I was mistaken. A tall, fair-skinned man entered, his striking pair of light blue eyes immediately catching my attention—they were as cold as snow. His piercing gaze made me straighten up. This must be Sir Kyros. He wore a sharp black three-piece suit, and his polished black shoes echoed against the cold floor as he walked.“Good e-evening, Sir Kyros,” I stuttered nervously. He raised an eyebrow and gave a faint smile. He sat at his desk while I remained standing before him.“I’m Lyrica, sir. I’m 24 years old, and I’d like to apply as a waitress here at Valiente. Jessie brought me here; we’re from the same hometown in Sta. Ana,” I said hurriedly, bowing my head.Several minutes passed, but he said nothing. Curiosity got the better of me, and I looke
We entered a room that resembled a locker area, with clothes hanging on one side."You can place your belongings here, dear. This will be your uniform for Tuesday," she said, handing me an orange outfit. I frowned upon seeing how short it was."Change into it. There's a stocking included so you won't feel too self-conscious while working," she said kindly. I nodded and thanked her. When I put on the outfit, I couldn't help but stare at myself in the mirror. The neckline was so low that it barely concealed my chest. It was a one-piece suit with feathers on the shoulders and a feathered tail. I looked like a bird plucked of its feathers.I sighed deeply. I can do this—for my family."Hi! Are you the new girl?" a woman asked as I stepped out of the staff room."Uh, yes. I'm Lyrica," I replied, smiling."I'm Rae. Come on, let’s do your makeup. Madam Tina asked me to help you since she got called by Boss Kyros.""Sure," I said, smiling."Uh, Rae?" I hesitantly called out to her."Yes? What
When we reached the roadside, we waited. Valiente’s entrance was just about ten steps away from the main road. After a while, a black car stopped in front of us. Its window rolled down, revealing someone I didn’t expect."Good evening, Boss Lucian," Anderson greeted respectfully."What are you doing here?" Lucian asked seriously, though Anderson seemed accustomed to his tone."I'm helping Madam Lyrica get a taxi, Boss Lucian, so I’ll know the driver," Anderson explained politely."Don’t bother; I’ll take her myself.""P-Pardon?" Anderson and I stammered simultaneously, exchanging looks."Tsk, I’ll take her, Anderson. Just open the car door for her," Lucian said, sounding exasperated."No, Sir, it's okay. I can wait for a taxi. I don’t want to inconvenience you," I said shyly."Get in," he ordered coldly, leaving me no choice but to comply. Anderson waved goodbye as I got into Lucian’s car."Take care, Boss Lucian. Bye, Madam Lyrica!" Anderson called out with a smile."Thank you," I re
