The next morning, I went home to change clothes. “Lyrica? Can we talk?” Dad asked me. I nodded and followed him outside the house. “I'm sorry about last night, Dad. I just really felt upset.” “I understand, child. And I’m sorry too for your siblings. You know how they are,” he said with a sigh. “Yes, Dad. By the way, I might finally push through with leaving.” “Oh... Is that so? Are you sure about your plan?” “Yes, Dad. I’ve been saving up for this for a long time. I can help out more if I work in Manila,” I replied with a smile. “You really take after your mom, Lyrica. I know you won’t let anyone stop you. Just take care of yourself there, okay?” “I will, Dad.” And that was how our conversation ended. It was always the same advice from Dad—to be patient with my siblings or just try to understand them. I left the house and went to the terminal. When I arrived at the store, I got straight to work. “Dear, can I get a bag of onions? Also, two bundles of string beans and water spinach.” “Here you go, ma’am. That’ll be 60 pesos,” I said with a smile. “Oh, are you Evelyn and Mario’s daughter?” “Ah, yes, ma’am.” “My, you’ve grown so much, dear. I’m Liza, a friend of your parents. I just got back from Manila. Are you Cynthia?” “No, ma’am. I’m Lyrica. You work in Manila?” I asked. “Yes, dear, I’m a housemaid there.” “Is that so? I’m also planning to move to Manila.” “Oh yes, life here is tough. Do you have a husband?” “No, ma’am. That’s not on my mind right now,” I said with a smile. “Well, that’s good. You wouldn’t want to end up like your mother when she got to Manila,” she said meaningfully, then laughed. I was puzzled but just smiled back. After paying, she left. I was the only one in the store since Nanay Lucing said her knees hurt. Around lunchtime, Marco arrived. “Hey, you’re early today.” “Our professors for the last two classes weren’t around, so I decided to help out here,” he said with a smile. “Oh, I see.” “Are you still thinking about what happened last night?” “Not really. Someone came by earlier and said she’s a friend of Dad’s. I told her I’m planning to move to Manila. She asked if I have a husband, and when I said no, she said it’s a good thing because I might end up like Mom.” “Hmm, just ignore it, Lyrica. You’re overthinking again. I wouldn’t be surprised if you go crazy one day,” he said, shaking his head before flicking my forehead. “Ow! I might actually go crazy because you keep flicking my forehead!” I snapped at him. He just laughed. By afternoon, Marco and I closed the store. We headed to Krisha’s house because Mildred texted me, saying she needed to talk to me in person. “Lyrica! Good news! Hurry up!” Mildred practically dragged me to Krisha’s hut. “What’s this about, Mil?” When we got there, she quickly made me sit. “So, here’s the thing. My sister Jessie called this morning. She said you can stay at their rented place while looking for a job. The catch is, to avoid paying rent, you’ll need to do their laundry. There are only three of them in the house, all single women. You’d only have to worry about your food and daily expenses. What do you think?” “That’s great! It’ll help me save money,” I said, smiling. “See? I knew you’d be okay with it. She wants to talk to you. Wait, let’s do a video call,” she said excitedly. Krisha gave me a thumbs-up. “Hi, Ate Jessie. Lyrica is here with me,” Mildred said. “Good. I know a few places where she can apply,” Ate Jessie replied. Mildred handed me her phone, and I was greeted by Ate Jessie. She had a sharp nose, thin red lips, fair skin, and short red hair. “So, you’re Lyrica? Mildred didn’t tell me her friend is this beautiful. It’s a good thing she befriended you,” Ate Jessie teased, clearly poking fun at Mildred. “Excuse me, Ate. I’m beautiful too, which is why we’re friends! Also, Lyrica really is the prettiest among her siblings,” Mildred boasted. I shyly bowed my head. “Don’t be shy, Lyrica. Shyness won’t get you far in Manila. You’ll need to toughen up.” “I’m not shy, really. I’m just not used to being complimented.” “Well, get used to it! So, are you okay with what Mildred told you? We’re often working overtime, so we hardly have time to tidy up the house.” “Yes, Ate Jessie. That’ll help me save money too.” “Great. When do you plan to move?” “Well…” “Lyrica is moving this Sunday, Ate Jessie. Perfect timing since you’re off work then, right?” “Oh yes… Alright. Do you have a cellphone? Just give me your number so I can call you.” “Sure, Ate. Thank you so much,” I said with a smile. “Alright, I’ll end the call now. Keep me updated,” she said before hanging up. “There you go, Lyrica. Marco and I pitched in for your travel money. Don’t argue; it’s just a loan,” Mildred said, shaking her head. “Thank you so much… I promise to pay you back as soon as I get a job,” I said, tearing up. “Oh, come on. Don’t cry, Lyrica, or you’ll make me cry too,” Krisha said, wiping her eyes. “Just don’t forget us, okay?” Mildred said as she hugged me. “How could I forget you guys when I owe you money?” I joked, making Wren and Marco burst out laughing."Take care of yourself, Lyrica. Don't ever forget my reminders," my father said as he hugged me tightly.Today was the day I left for Manila, a five-hour journey from our province."I will, Dad. This is all for our family," I reassured him."Ate, please be careful there, okay? It's probably better that you're leaving. I hate seeing Ate Cynthia picking fights with you. Boyet and I can't do anything because we're too scared of her and Ate," Annika said, her voice trembling."You'll be fine. Just make sure you and Boyet look after our nieces and nephews. Call me right away if there's a problem, alright? Don't hesitate," I said as I ruffled her hair."Of course, Ate."Cynthia and the others weren't home; they had spent the night at Kuya Roy's house. I chose not to tell them about my departure to avoid any drama. It was only three in the morning, and Wren and Marco were accompanying me to the bus terminal. I didn’t ask my father to come because I didn’t want us breaking down in tears at th
"Uh, just ignore those two. Go ahead, put your things in that room, then let's eat," Jessie said, evading my questioning look. I just followed her instructions and stepped out again to join them for dinner."Hey girl, how old are you? You know, you’d be perfect for the place where we work," Misha said."Stupid! Leave Lyrica out of it; she’s pure!" Jessie quickly interjected as she sat at the dining table."Come on, it’s so hard to find jobs here in Manila. She’ll probably end up working there, too. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of her. Don’t act like you didn’t start the same way," Misha teased Jessie.Jessie let out a resigned sigh."Uh, so Lyrica, the truth is, I don’t actually work in an office. I couldn’t get hired by any company here in Manila back then," Jessie began."So I ended up working in a high-end bar, along with these two. No one back in the province knows, so please don’t mention it to Mildred. She’s so nosy," she said, shaking her head."Oh, of course not," I replied wi
My day started early, while Jessie and the others were just getting ready to sleep. I tidied up the apartment, mindful of Jessie’s instructions about what could and couldn’t be moved. After finishing the chores, I got myself ready for my first day of job hunting. I wore my black slacks from college, paired with a purple blouse. I powdered my face lightly and applied a bit of lipstick to add color. Despite it being only seven in the morning, the noise outside was already palpable. I slipped on my black doll shoes, texted my housemates to let them know I was out, and left.I rode a tricycle, holding the list of places I planned to visit. I started with the one closest to the apartment."Good morning, Sir. Is this where the hiring is happening?" I asked the guard stationed outside a tall building."Yes, hija. Are you applying?""Yes, I hope so," I replied with a smile."Alright, come in. Do you see the line of applicants over there?" He pointed to a group seated nearby. I nodded and proc
I didn’t know what to do when Annika called one morning, crying hysterically.“Ate! Ambet was rushed to the hospital! His fever is extremely high, and he had a seizure!” she sobbed, her voice trembling.“Lyrica, give me the phone. I’ll talk to her,” I heard Ate Cynthia say in a panicked tone.“Hello, Lyrica! We’re at the hospital right now. Ambet’s fever is so high. Send us money. We urgently need it for your nephew!” Ate demanded, her voice frantic.I burst into tears. Who could I even borrow money from? I still haven’t found a job.“Alright, Ate… I’ll send some as soon as I borrow from someone here. Please update me on Ambet’s condition,” I replied, my voice breaking.“Make sure to send it immediately. The doctor prescribed medicine, and we don’t have money to buy it,” Ate said before ending the call.I sat there, paralyzed. Jessie might be able to lend me at least a couple of thousand pesos.I waited for Jessie to wake up, but Shiela emerged from the bedroom first.“Oh, what happen
It was almost seven when we arrived at Valiente. The bar's building was stunning, modern in design, and at first glance, you wouldn't think it was a place meant for entertainment."Lyrica, let's head to our makeup room first. Sir Kyros might arrive later," Misha said to me."Hey, Jessie, Misha, who’s your companion? Are you really bringing her inside?" teased the building guard with a grin. He was a big man with muscular arms, which made me cringe and hide behind the two of them."Oh, Andoy! Don’t scare Lyrica like that!" Misha said, laughing."Don’t call me Andoy in front of this lovely lady. You can call me Anderson, Madam Lyrica," he greeted me with a smile."Yuck! Anderson doesn’t suit you, Andoy!" Misha teased."Enough with teasing Andoy, Misha! Lyrica's still shy. Watch over her, okay? She’s just applying as a waitress here," Jessie explained, referring to me."Of course! I’ll take care of Madam Lyrica," Andoy said. I simply smiled and nodded."You look even prettier when you sm
For almost half an hour, I’ve been waiting. To distract myself, I observed the office around me.I sighed in boredom. Moments later, the door opened again, making me jump to my feet in surprise.I thought it was Mama Julio who arrived, but I was mistaken. A tall, fair-skinned man entered, his striking pair of light blue eyes immediately catching my attention—they were as cold as snow. His piercing gaze made me straighten up. This must be Sir Kyros. He wore a sharp black three-piece suit, and his polished black shoes echoed against the cold floor as he walked.“Good e-evening, Sir Kyros,” I stuttered nervously. He raised an eyebrow and gave a faint smile. He sat at his desk while I remained standing before him.“I’m Lyrica, sir. I’m 24 years old, and I’d like to apply as a waitress here at Valiente. Jessie brought me here; we’re from the same hometown in Sta. Ana,” I said hurriedly, bowing my head.Several minutes passed, but he said nothing. Curiosity got the better of me, and I looke
When we reached the roadside, we waited. Valiente’s entrance was just about ten steps away from the main road. After a while, a black car stopped in front of us. Its window rolled down, revealing someone I didn’t expect."Good evening, Boss Lucian," Anderson greeted respectfully."What are you doing here?" Lucian asked seriously, though Anderson seemed accustomed to his tone."I'm helping Madam Lyrica get a taxi, Boss Lucian, so I’ll know the driver," Anderson explained politely."Don’t bother; I’ll take her myself.""P-Pardon?" Anderson and I stammered simultaneously, exchanging looks."Tsk, I’ll take her, Anderson. Just open the car door for her," Lucian said, sounding exasperated."No, Sir, it's okay. I can wait for a taxi. I don’t want to inconvenience you," I said shyly."Get in," he ordered coldly, leaving me no choice but to comply. Anderson waved goodbye as I got into Lucian’s car."Take care, Boss Lucian. Bye, Madam Lyrica!" Anderson called out with a smile."Thank you," I re
We entered a room that resembled a locker area, with clothes hanging on one side."You can place your belongings here, dear. This will be your uniform for Tuesday," she said, handing me an orange outfit. I frowned upon seeing how short it was."Change into it. There's a stocking included so you won't feel too self-conscious while working," she said kindly. I nodded and thanked her. When I put on the outfit, I couldn't help but stare at myself in the mirror. The neckline was so low that it barely concealed my chest. It was a one-piece suit with feathers on the shoulders and a feathered tail. I looked like a bird plucked of its feathers.I sighed deeply. I can do this—for my family."Hi! Are you the new girl?" a woman asked as I stepped out of the staff room."Uh, yes. I'm Lyrica," I replied, smiling."I'm Rae. Come on, let’s do your makeup. Madam Tina asked me to help you since she got called by Boss Kyros.""Sure," I said, smiling."Uh, Rae?" I hesitantly called out to her."Yes? What
