I take the remote from Jason and change the screen back to Doctor Shields. I stare at him, trying to get a read on him. His arms are crossed as he leans back in the chair with a slight smirk on his lips.
“He doesn’t even seem concerned that he’s been caught,” I say.
“I need to call the Elder council. They need to know about the banishments,” Alpha Peter says.
I turn to look at him, and all I see is defeat in his eyes. “Please, Alpha. Let me question him. He might slip up talking to me. I can play on his fear of the chosen,” I plead with him.
He glares at me, the defeat in his eyes replaced with anger. “No. You have no place in that room. This is my pack, remember that.” He says with a growl.
“I know this is your pack, Alpha. I meant no disrespect,” I say cooly, holding his gaze.
Nick clears his throat. “Alpha, we need to tell you something,” he says.
“What now?” Alpha Peter asks, turning his angry gaze to Nick.
“Athena and I went for a run before the meeting, and Athena picked up on an unknown scent near your northern border,” Nick explains.
“And? She hasn’t met everyone in the pack,” he says.
“That’s true, but her wolf thinks it was a distinct scent. If it was someone from your pack, she would have still come across it before today,” Nick says.
“Distinct how?” He asks, turning his attention back to me.
“Enyo said it was our mate,” I tell him.
He looks surprised. “She’s sure?”
She growls. ‘Why does everyone keep asking that? I know it was our mate!’ she retorts.
“Yes, Alpha. She’s sure. There’s no way we wouldn’t have picked up his scent if he was someone in your pack. There was also an undertone to the scent. He smelt like a rogue.”
Alpha Peter stiffens. “Where on the northern border?”
“Behind the pack house, along the bottom of the hill where the river runs along it.”
Alpha Peter looks at Jason. “Get a patrol up there and find him,” he growls out.
Jason nods and hurries out of the room.
“What are you going to do with him?” I ask, concerned.
“Nothing, if he cooperates,” he growls.
Enyo growls. ‘If they hurt him, I’ll kill them all.’
I sigh and rub my face, suddenly feeling exhausted. Everything has gone to shit. “This is all a bloody mess.” I say sadly, my eyes welling up with tears.
Alpha Peter softens and places a hand on my shoulder, giving it a squeeze. “Everything will be okay, Athena.”
I wipe my eyes and shake my head. I clear my throat and ask, “What now? What about Doctor Shields?”
“I’ll continue to question him later. For now, I need to call the council,” he says and walks out of the room.
I turn my attention back to Doctor Shields on the small security screen, and Nick comes and stands behind me. “He’s right, Athena. Everything will be okay,” Nick says.
“We don’t know that,” I whisper.
“Okay, let me put it this way. Everything will turn out the way it’s supposed to. How the Goddess intended.”
I snort at the idea.
“You must be exhausted. Why don’t you go and rest?”
I sigh. “Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.” I turn and give him a small smile. “I’ll talk to you later.”

I lie on the bed, staring up at the ceiling, unable to sleep despite the exhaustion I feel. The events of the last few weeks run through my mind, and I feel more lost and confused than ever before.
‘I wonder what he looks like,’ Enyo says, interrupting my thoughts.
‘Who?’
‘Our mate, duh.’
I sigh heavily. ‘I still don’t think it’s a good idea to find him, whoever he is. Look at the mess we’re in? We’d be putting him in danger.’
‘Being connected to our mate will make us stronger.’
‘Being stronger doesn’t mean we can’t get him killed. We don’t know Doctor Shields’ plans, or who he’s working with. He’s probably working with Derek.’
‘Derek could have just been following us.’
‘That doesn’t make things better. That would mean there’s multiple people out there that want us dead. How can you think bringing our mate into any of this is a good thing?’
‘Because he’s our fated mate, Athena. The Goddess chose him for us, and us for him. No matter what happens, we should be together.’
‘That doesn’t answer my question, though, Enyo.’
‘You just need to have some faith in the Goddesses plan for us.’
I snort. ‘If everything that’s happened is her plan, then how can I have any faith in her?’
Our conversation is interrupted by a knock at the door.
“Who is it?” I call out.
“It’s Jason, can I come in?”
I get up from the bed and run to the door, pulling it open. “Did you find him?” I ask, stepping to the side to let him in.
He shakes his head and closes the door. “We caught a faint scent, but not enough to follow it. He’s definitely a rogue though,” he explains, concerned.
I sit down in an armchair in the corner of the room and bring my knees to my chest, wrapping my arms around my legs. “What am I going to do?” I ask sadly.
“I don’t know, Athena. But him being this close by concerns me. And the fact that he’s a rogue… Who knows how dangerous he is.”
“Knowing my luck, he’s probably completely feral,” I say, dropping my head to rest on my legs.
“Hey, I’m sure he’s not. If he was, he wouldn’t be able to hide himself so well. We would have been able to track him and find him,” Jason says, kneeling in front of me and rubbing my leg.
I raise my head to look at him. “I guess you’re right,” I mumble, then I growl in frustration. “This whole situation is so messed up, Jason. I don’t even know what to do or where to go to from here. Derek tried to kill me. Alpha Peter won’t let me speak to Doctor Shields. I couldn’t find anything helpful in his files, and the ones that Luna Rachel put together are all the same information she already told me.”
“Alpha will get something out of Doctor Shields, eventually. Don’t give up, okay?”
I give him a small smile and nod. “I’m sure you’re right,” I say, unconvinced.
“You should try to get some sleep, Athena. Everything will feel clearer in the morning,” he says, standing up.
I sigh and stand up as well, and I give him a tight hug. “Thank you, Jason. For everything.”
He hugs me back, then stands back with his hands on my shoulders. “Anytime,” he says with a smile, and leaves my room.
I walk back over to the bed and flop down onto it. With a sigh, I try to get comfortable, then close my eyes and try to fall asleep.
“Wake up, bitch,” a voice whispers in my ear. My eyes flutter open, and I feel something sharp at my neck. “What the fu…,” I start to say, but a hand covers my mouth. “Say another word, and you’re dead. Got it?” the voice warns.I nod as my eyes adjust to the dark, and I realize Catherine’s face is only inches away from mine. “My dad is being banished because of you,” she spits, the anger in her voice like venom.‘Shift, Athena,’ Enyo growls.‘Not yet,’ I tell her. “I’m going to kill you for what you’ve done to my family,” she whispers as she trails a knife down my throat. I try not to make a sound as wolfsbane burns my skin anywhere the blade touches. “But first, I’m going to make you suffer.”A sick smile forms on her face as she cuts my arm, and I gasp in pain as wolfsbane enters my system, the burning sensation is excruciating. She cuts me again, but this time on my stomach, and I try not to scream as tears fill my eyes.“Look at you writhe in pain. The big, tough chosen one c
“Athena…? Athena, wake up, honey.”I groan, not wanting to wake up yet. I open my eye and see my mom standing over me. “Mom? What’s wrong?” “Nothing, sweetheart. The doctor just needs to look at your eye,” she tells me as the door to the room opens and Doctor Connors comes in. “Hi, Miss Argos,” Doctor Connors says as she leans over me. “I just need to remove the bandages to check how your eye is healing,” she explains. I nod and slowly sit up, and she removes the bandages wrapped around my head that are covering my right eye. As the last bit comes off, and she removes the gauze, the light above me burns my eye.“Argh!” I yell, covering my eye with my hand.“Try not to touch it, Miss Argos. Is the light hurting it?” Doctor Connors asks.“Yeah, it stings like a bitch,” I say, dropping my hand and trying to avoid the light.“Light sensitivity is normal. This is good. It means your vision may not have been affected,” she says, pausing for a moment. “There’s still a lot of swelling, and

Andreas P.O.VI pace the small area of the cave, raking my hand through my hair every two minutes.‘We’d know if she was dead, wouldn’t we?’ I ask Ares, the tremor in my voice giving away how worried I am.‘We haven’t marked her. So no, we won’t know anything,’ Ares says, just as worried.‘FUCK! I need to know if she’s okay.’ I squat down, rubbing my hands roughly over my face. After a moment, I stand up and walk over to the cave’s opening and look out over the Moonstone territory. It’s a beautiful, clear night with a bright moon shining down on me. I raise my gaze to the moon and pray to the moon goddess that Athena is okay. ‘Maybe we should see if we can get to the hospital and find her,’ I say after a while.‘They’ve had extra patrols out looking for us. It isn’t safe,’ Ares warns.‘I don’t care! I need to know that she’s okay!’‘I’m just as worried as you are, Andreas. But we’re no good to her if we’re dead,’ he says, trying to calm me.As I look over to the pack house, I sigh and
Athena P.O.VI wake suddenly, my heart pounding and I look around the dark room, disorientated. I sigh in relief when I remember I’m in the pack hospital, and I realize my cell is ringing. I reach over and look at the screen and sit bolt upright when I see the number calling is the number left for me at the motel.‘Answer it!’ Enyo yells and I quickly press the answer button.“Hello?”“Athena?” the man’s voice asks.“Who is this?” I whisper.“My name is Andreas…” he trails off, and there’s an awkward silence.“You’re the one who left your number at the motel?”“Yes. Well, my friend left it there for me…”“Why?”“I’ve been trying to find lycans who are like me,” He stammers.“What do you mean, like you?” I ask, gripping the phone tighter.“I’m… I’m different… Like you…”“How do you know about me?” I ask in a whisper.“Alpha Peter. He gave me details of lycans he knew about who are different, and you were one of them,” he explains.I place my hand on my chest, trying to calm down. “But w
My hands tremble as I place my phone on the side table, and I fall back on to the hospital bed. “Wow.” I whisper. His voice was deep and silky smooth, like melted chocolate, and the thought of seeing him tomorrow is giving me butterflies.‘I thought we didn’t have time for a mate,’ Enyo says smugly.‘I can’t help it. Even his voice draws me to him,’ I say, a blush creeping up my cheeks.‘Dumb-dumb, that’s the mate bond. And things are only going to get worse,’ she says as she sighs contentedly.‘At least having a mate might calm you down a bit,’ I say cheekily.‘Don’t count on it.’A knock on the door brings me back to reality. “Come in,” I call out.The door opens, and I see Ryna’s smiling face as he comes in. Then Gino, Rynas’ mate, comes in behind him.“Well, well. If it isn’t my two favorite men.” I smile from ear to ear, their presence making me feel instantly better.“For now,” Ry grins as he walks over to the bed. “I hear there’s a mate in the picture,” he chuckles as he envelop
After getting our clothes from near the gym, we return to the pack hospital and find Doctor Connors waiting for me in my room.“You appear to be feeling better, Miss Argos,” Doctor Connors says with a smile.“I’m feeling so much better, thanks. So, when can I get out of here?” I ask.“Let me look at your eye,” she says, motioning for me to sit on the bed.She takes the penlight from her pocket and shines it into my eye as I sit down. “Could you please follow the light?”I follow the light, thankful that it isn’t as painful as it was yesterday.“How’s the blurriness?” She asks.“There’s still a bit in my peripheral, but it’s a lot better than yesterday.”She nods. “The scar is nice and pink, and it will fade over time,” she states. “Your pupil’s reaction is a little sluggish, but that should correct itself as well. Show me your arm, stomach, and leg, please.”I show her the pink scars that have formed over the cuts on my body.“No dizziness or weakness?” She inquires after inspecting th
Hey guys! Just a little note from me. From now on, when I post chapters, anything said through mind-link (the telepathic way wolves can communicate with their pack) will now be in italics. I will be going back and editing previous chapters to show these changes. I hope this will make things easier to read when there's a lot of dialogue and swapping between mind-link and normal speech. Thanks guys, for the continued support, and I hope you are enjoying Athena and Enyos' story. Please leave a like, comment, or vote if you are really enjoying it. Regards, Skye.
The early morning sun peaks over the surrounding mountains, spreading its warmth over our territory, but I don’t feel it. My breath is ragged as I run hard through the forest. Low-lying branches smack my face as I go past them, but I feel nothing. My only focus is to get to the lake. The lake will calm me before this rage swallows me whole.I finally see it in the distance, the lake that Enyo and I used to soak in after practice. Back when everything was right in the world. Before Daddy was murdered. Before I knew anything about the chosen.I don’t slow as I get closer. Instead, I brace for impact as I dive towards the ice covering the body of water. Enyo’s large, heavy body breaks through, and the iced water takes my breath away as I slowly sink to the bottom. I let the freezing water cool my heated body; the rage releasing from my body and my mind slowly clearing.I can hear shouts from above the water, but I ignore them. As the rage fuelled fogginess leaves my mind, I’m hit with a
“Alpha! Alpha, can you hear me?”I groggily open my eyes and see Leah hovering over me.“Alpha, thank the Goddess,” Leah says with a heavy sigh. “Don’t move, Doc Apollo is on his way.”I grab the back of my head, and I feel that my hair is wet. I look at my hand, and it’s covered in blood.“What happened?” I ask, lifting my head slightly and looking around.“You fell down the cliff side after the rogue charged you,” she explains.I look to my left and up the cliff side. “I’ve been saying for years there needs to be a railing put up there,” I say with a groan and try to sit up.“Please don’t move, Alpha. You fell a long way.”“I see that. But I’ll be okay,” I tell her, sitting up. Then I remember the reason I was in the forest. “Where’s Catherine?” I ask, panicked.“Gamma Michael and Gamma Cole have her in custody,” she explains.“And the other rogue?”She says nothing but looks behind me. I turn and see a young boy, his neck clearly broken from the fall. “Shit,” I grumble. “How did you
“Everything looks wonderful, Melanie,” I compliment her as I look over all the decorated tables outside of the pack hall.“Thank you, Alpha,” she says happily. “I hope you like everything inside, as well.”“I know I will,” I tell her with a big smile. She smiles back and bows before heading off to attend to her duties. Andreas comes up behind me and wraps his arms around my waist, nestling his nose into the crook of my neck. “I can’t believe we pulled this off.”“The pack has worked hard. I’m so proud of everyone.”I see Rich and Noah in the distance, with the Cresent Warriors, and Michael and Beta Castor behind them. I take Andreas’s hand and walk over to them, wanting to keep the conversation away from others. “Still nothing?” I ask, disappointed.“I lost their scent on the other side of the mountain,” Beta Castor says with a frown.“Leah stayed at the Cabin in case she’s stupid enough to go back there,” Tony says.I nod. “We’ll pick up the search again in the morning,” I tell them.
“How is the feast coming along?” I ask Melanie, the pack’s head cook.“Everything is coming along nicely, Alpha. I’ve ensured there’s plenty of food for both packs, with extras.” She says with a proud smile.“You’ve done amazingly, Melanie. If there’s anything you need help with, please speak with Gino,” I tell her.“The Omegas are all taking care of everything, Alpha. They’ve been very helpful, as always.”“I’m proud of all of you,” I tell the rest of the Omegas and they all smile and bow their heads.“Alpha, I need a word with you,” Leah says from the kitchen door.“Of course,” I tell Leah. “Please excuse me, Melanie,” I smile at her.She bows her head and returns to her work, and I follow Leah into the dining room, where I find Rich and Noah waiting.“What can I do for our Epsilons today?” I ask with a smile.“We have a report from our border patrol, Alpha,” Rich says.“There’s been a sighting of a couple of rogues hanging around our borders,” Noah explains.I stiffen. “From the pa
Three hours laterWe watch as fight after fight ends, and the defeated warriors fill the sidelines of the training field, joining the rest of the pack in cheering and enjoying the spectacle. We watch Michael closely as he defeats opponent after opponent.“He hasn’t lost any of his strength,” Cassia says, and I think I see something flash in her eyes, but whatever she was feeling quickly disappears when she notices me staring at her.“Or his viciousness,” Ryna adds.“Nothing wrong with some viscousness in your Gamma, Beta,” Harry says.“As long as it’s towards our enemies...” Gino mumbles.I focus back on Michael as he defeats another warrior, trying to ignore the guilt I feel from Gino’s comment.“Maybe you should have just named him Gamma, Alpha,” Tony says. “He has the advantage of being a born Beta. I don’t think anyone will beat him.”“It is looking that way. But maybe that will earn him back some of the respect he lost.”“Doubtful. But we’ll see,” Ryna says.“Cole could give him
As I walk towards Ryna’s house with Andreas, I can’t help the pounding of my heart as I think of my best friend never forgiving me.I feel Andreas squeeze my hand tightly, and I give him a small smile as we climb the steps of Ryna’s small cottage. I take a breath as we approach the door and knock.Gino answers the door a few moments later, and I’m engulfed with the anger he feels as it radiates from his body.“He needs time, Alpha.” He says shortly.“I understand, Gino. But there are pack matters that need to be attended to,” Andreas says when I don’t say anything.“I will make sure that all pack matters are dealt with,” Gino responds, his glaring eyes never leaving mine.I swallow the lump in my throat and finally find the words I want to say. “I’m not here about pack business,” I say, my voice coming out as a squeak. “I came to apologize for everything that happened yesterday.”“It’s going to take more than apologies, Alpha,” Gino says angrily.“I know, but I can only start there.”
The Next DayAthena P.O.VI try to roll over, but I’m being held in place by Andreas. I kiss his arm and say, “Time to wake up, my love.”He groans and hugs me tighter. “No, thanks.”I laugh and try to roll over again. “If you squeeze me any harder, Andreas, I’m going to pee.”“Fiiiiiine.” He releases me with another groan before rolling onto his back and rubbing his eyes. “We can’t stay in bed,” I say as I get up and go into the bathroom. “We have way too much to do in the next few days. We still haven’t questioned the others we captured with Leon the other night. We have to get the pack house sorted out…”“I knooooow,” he says with another groan, cutting me off before I repeat the seemingly never-ending list of things we need to do.I giggle as I finish up and wash my hands before turning the shower on. I hear Andreas come up behind me, so I turn around and wrap my arms around his neck with a kiss.He smiles into my lips before kissing down my neck to my mark. He leaves a chaste kis
Somewhere nearby…I’m flung across the room as my connection to the Alpha is broken.“Master! Are you okay?” Alyria asks, running over and taking my arm.I look down at her bony hand on my arm, then at her. I glare at her and slap her hard across the face.“HOW DARE YOU TOUCH ME!” I bellow at her.“I’m sorry, Master.” She whimpers, holding her cheek.“GET ME THE WITCH! NOW!” I yell at her, and she gets up from the ground and scurries from the room.“What happened, Master?” Wren asks from the corner of the room.“Her wolf broke the connection,” I explain angrily, standing and brushing off my clothes.“How? I thought the witch said she’d be locked away in the Alpha’s mind?”“I don’t know!” I yell at him, and he shrinks back in fear.“You called for me, Sir?” the witch, Elizabeth asks as she enters my office.I stalk toward her angrily. “You told me the wolf would be locked away in the Alpha’s mind. So would you care to explain to me how the wolf was able to break my connection to the Al
“MURDERER!” someone screams, and everyone falls silent, turning to where the scream came from. “Karla,” I whisper, my body suddenly shaking. She looks weak and sickly, her eyes red from crying. “WHY DID YOU KILL HIM?” she screams again, and I see Cassia running towards her. “Karla, why don’t we go back inside?” Cassia says softly, taking her arm. “DON’T TOUCH ME!” Karla shouts, pulling her arm out of Cassia’s grasp. “I WANT TO KNOW WHY SHE KILLED MY MATE!” The pack members begin whispering and pulling their kids behind them. “Karla, please, why don’t we go inside so we can discuss this,” Andreas says, taking a step towards her. He takes my hand to walk with him, but my feet won’t move. I’m frozen in place. No words are forming in my mind as I stare at the woman whose mate I killed with my bare hands. “Athena?” He says, looking back at me. “I… I…” I stutter out, but nothing else comes. “ANSWER ME, YOU FILTH!” Karla spits out, and Enyo growls. There are gasps and more whispers
